RACHEL AND CARL'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
Rachel/Greta/Carl/Braun

Rachel is trying to get out of her locked room, when Greta enters.

Rachel begs her to let her out and help her find her husband. Greta
thinks she dreamed Carl's presence, until Rachel spots Carl's wedding band
on the nightstand and shows it to Greta as proof. Greta is nervous about
throwing in with Rachel, but Rachel says she wants to see Dr.

Dansonville. Greta predicts it's a big mistake, but agrees to try. She
exits and locks the door. Later she returns and says Dr. D. said no way,
and he had advised Greta not to encourage the Comtesse's fantasies.

Rachel is crestfallen; Greta feels sorry for her, and gives her her
hospital-issue cellular phone to try to confirm her story. While Rachel
tries to "phone home," Greta keeps watch at the door. Unfortunately,
Justine answers [see below]. Greta can see that Rachel is totally freaked
out by the phone call, muttering about how she's living in my house,
trying to take over my life, Carl must have figured it out, that's why
he's come to get me. Don't talk like that, Greta warns, you'll catch
hell.

MEANWHILE, in the clinic day-room, the dancing patient gets bored
with the aquarium, and dreams up a spaceship outside the window. All the
other patients catch her excitement and rush to the window to see the
spaceship. As the nurse tries to quiet them down, Carl steals over to her
desk and picks up the phone to call Beastie [see below]. After his call,
he sneaks out into the hallway. He hears Braun storming down the hall
with a messenger. As Carl watches, she signs for a package and sends the
guy away. Thinking she's alone, she opens the envelope. It's a pile of
cash with a note [which she reads out loud in English!]: "Here is the
final payment, call me when your task is done." She exits, as Carl puts 2
and 2 together and heads for Rachel's room.

Rachel begs to make one more call, to her stepson, the Bay City
police captain - surely there's no harm in calling the police[!]? Greta
protests, but finally agrees - but as she checks the door, Braun bursts in
and catches them. She kicks Greta out, ordering her to lock the door and
go wait in my office so I can chew you out for letting a patient use the
phone. Greta scrambles out, as Braun turns on Rachel in a cold fury.

Rachel begs for mercy, to no avail.

But Carl is watching from a nearby doorway; when he sees Greta come
out and lock the door, he grabs her from behind in a choke-hold and forces
her to open Rachel's door again. They burst in as Braun is trying to tie
Rachel's wrists to the bed. Babbling like a lunatic, Carl throws himself
on top of Rachel (to her delight). As Greta tries to help Braun and an
orderly restrain Carl, Rachel sneaks the keys out of Greta's pocket and
hides them under the sheet. Braun and the orderly drag Carl out, but not
before Rachel secretly shows Carl she has the keys. Braun is jealous of
me, Carl babbles. Braun gives Rachel a final glare and slams the door
behind them; left alone, Rachel grasps the keys and laughs with joy.

In another room, Braun has the orderly give Carl an injection, as he
continues babbling and making passes at Greta and Braun. Braun tells
Greta she's in big trouble; they all exit, inexplicably leaving Carl
alone. He staggers out into the hallway. Rachel appears behind him,
embracing him and kissing his cheek. Hello, Rachel, he says with a groggy
smile, as he sinks to the floor in a stupor.

JUSTINE'S REVOLVING DOOR
Justine/Vicky/Lucy/Gary/Grant

Justine sits staring at the phone, hoping Carl will call. The
doorbell rings. When Lucy doesn't respond, Justine answers it. It's
Vicky, with Steven and Kirk. Lucy starts to enter, sees Vicky, and ducks
out of sight so she won't blow her cover. Vicky tells notRachel that
Steven wanted to show Grandma his new ball and glove before they head for
Lassiter, then she and Steven are off to Europe to see Jamie. Justine
gushes all over Kirk, and asks if she can spend time with him while
Vicky's gone. Sure, says Vicky, set it up with Bridget - but she clearly
thinks it's a little bizarre.

As Lucy hides and watches, Justine sits talking with Vicky and the
kids, then Vicky says they have to go. As they rise to leave, the phone
rings. Justine waves them out [see below] as she answers the phone,
delighted when she hears Carl on the line [see above]. She asks where h e
is, he vaguely answers he's on the road, he'll be home soon. The doorbell
rings, Justine calls for Lucy to answer, then she begs Carl for his
number. Here it is, he answers - then, with a wicked grin, he drops the
receiver in the day-room aquarium!

At Vicky's place, Vicky and Steven scurry to pack while Bridget holds
Kirk. The doorbell rings, it's Grant, unshaven and pathetic looking,
asking to see Kirk. Reluctantly, Vicky agrees, but we're about to leave.

Grant holds Kirk like his life depended on it, and wonders if Kirk
couldn't stay with him while Vickky's gone. No way, she says, we have a
court order - start acting more human and then we'll talk. She asks if
he's o.k., and recommends he get a life - buy it if you have to. Visit's
over, she finally says; as he slinks out, she says he can arrange with
Bridget for extra visits while she's gone, but no way does Kirk leave this
house - and, for heaven's sake, pull yourself together! Grateful, he
exits.

Back at the Cory mansion, Lucy answers the doorbell (as Carl's call
to Justine "washes out"). It's Gary, in uniform; as Justine joins them,
Lucy and Gary pretend not to know each other. The phone rings again, and
Gary and Lucy watch as Justine answers it. It's Rachel, who is stunned
into silence at hearing Justine answer in her voice. Hello, hello, who's
there, says Justine - suddenly spooked, she slams down the phone. Lucy
then introduces Gary to Justine and exits. Justine looks annoyed when
Gary says Ryan had to leave town so he asked Gary to check in on her.

Then she says maybe he can help, she wants a trace on her phone line so
she can track down Carl. Gary says sorry, he'd need authorization. The
doorbell rings again, Lucy answers it but Justine rushes over when she
sees it's Grant. She welcomes him in, closing the parlor doors in Lucy
and Gary's faces. Gary tells Lucy he's her contact while Ryan looks for
Carl in Europe, and they talk about how Rachel just gets weirder and
weirder.

Grant express his despondence at his life, he just saw Kirk but
Vicky's being hard-nosed about visitation, he's afraid his son will grown
up not knowing him. Justine assures him he can count on her friendship
and support in getting Vicky to see reason. Grant remarks that he's been
alone ever since his mother died, and he's never needed anyone, but now he
needs his son. Aching to reach out to him, Justine insists she has
something to show him that will cheer them both up. Gary and Lucy, who
have been listening at the parlor doors, scramble to hide as Justine leads
Grant out the front and down the walk. Gary and Lucy emerge and watch
them go; Gary says Ryan better get back soon, the lady is definitely up to
something.

Grant is bewildered when "Rachel" brings him to the house she bought
(which he had considered buying). She says Vicky has agreed to bring her
sons here, and Justine wants Grant to be a part of their one big happy
family, she doesn't want him to ever feel alone again. She leads him
inside, and he's stunned that it looks EXACTLY like his boyhood home in
Boston - but how? why? What's going on? he murmers. Soon you'll know
everything, Justine coos, soon we'll have everything we want. As she
strokes his chest and shoulder, he gets the willies [probably thinks she's
coming on to him] and makes up a quick excuse to leave; he bolts out the
door and down the walk, giving Justine an uncomfortable backward glance as
he goes. Justine glides back inside, drifting finally over to what looks
like an old-fashioned nursery alcove, lost in her happy fantasies.

JOE PUTS HIS RECOVERY ON HOLD
Joe/Paulina/Frankie/Eddie

Frankie arrives at Paulina's to see Joe, who is recuperating on her
couch. Paulina invites her to stay for coffee; while Paulina exits to get
the coffee, Frankie asks Joe if he's told Paulina he thinks Jake could be
alive. No, he says, he doesn't want to say anything until he's sure, but
he won't lie to her again after the necklace fiasco. Still wincing in
pain, he insists on going to San Francisco to check out Svenson and/or get
a lead on Jake. Frankie volunteers to check it out while he recuperates,
but Joe predicts Cass would kill him if he let her mix it up with San
Francisco loan sharks. I'm recovered enough, he insists; if Jake's alive,
I'll find him.

After Paulina rejoins them, Eddie arrives with homemade goodies for
Joe. As Paulina gets him a cup of coffee, he remarks to Frankie what a
great couple they are, Joe's sure to have a speedy recovery under
Paulina's TLC. After a brief visit, Eddie says he has to go, he has
paperwork to do for his restaurant venture. Paulina congratulates him on
his plans, and Eddie again gushes about the happy couple as she escorts
him out. Frankie has to leave, too, and urges Paulina to keep Joe from
getting out and about too soon. Joe insists he's going to San Francisco
ASAP. Frankie leaves, and Paulina tells Joe no way is she letting him go
jetting off in his condition. I'm going and that's that, says Joe, this c
ase won't wait. Paulina says she has no desire to return to San
Francisco, where her last troubles with jake started, but no way is she
letting Joe go alone. He insists she stay home, but he as to go, it's a
really important case. What's so important? she asks. The phone rings in
the kitchen; she goes to answer it, as Joe moans to himself that he has to
tell her.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS...
Jake/Allison/Vicky

Jake and Allison have spent the night in the Lassiter motel. Jake
dreams again about the blonde (who frankly looks more like Vicky than
Paulina). He wakes with a start, and goes to the window to gather his
thoughts. Allison comes up behind him and startles hm. It's only me,
Bunny, she coos. Call me Jake, he answers, pulling away. He suggests
maybe she should go back to San Francisco. She doesn't understand why
he'd want to pursue the past of this loser instead of staying with her and
making a new life together - she came here to take him home. This is my
hom, he snaps - or at least it's Jake's home. He again says he wants her
to go back to San Francisco. You would, she snarls - "or Jake would -
jackass!"

MEANWHILE, Vicky has arrived in Lassiter with Steven. She brings him
to the famous playground where she and Jake spent so much time as kids.

Steven puts down his glove and ball near the hamster's grave, and Vicky
shows him the swings, I sat here and Jake sat there. They sit and swing,
and Vicky notes how big Steven is getting, so independent - but you don't
have to do everything alone, I had Jake and you've got me, and your
grandpa (I hope). They leave to get a pizza and visit an old friend of
Vicky's ("You'll like her, she's got big hair!").

Right after they leave, Jake arrives at the playground, noting the 2
swings still quivering. He sits and swings, contemplating his
surroundings hoping for some memory. He smiles as he sees the ball and
glove sitting on the ground, and he goes over to pick them up. Just then
Vicky returns for the glove; they glance at each other as he hands it
over. They both start to walk away, then simultaneously freeze in their
respective tracks. Slowly they turn... They stand staring, face to face.

"Jake!" gasps Vicky with amazement. FREEZE FRAME.

Well, that's it - I'm outa here for 2 weeks, see y'all with the 8/25 update!
