TEATIME WITH MOM
Ryan/Lucy/Justine

Ryan arrives at the Cory house, Lucy lets him in. The parlor doors

are shut. Lucy confirms that "the queen is in," she's a royal pain as

well as VERY secretive about making phone calls. Lucy begs Ryan to tell

her what gives so she'll know better what to look for. Ryan says he

can't tell her yet, it's even causing friction between him and Vicky - he

needs to find Carl to o.k. telling Vicky the truth. Ask Carl if you can

tell me, too, quips Lucy. Justine hears the name "Rachel" through the

parlor doors, and emerges to ask if Ryan is discussing her with the

servants. Checking up on me? she accuses testily. Yes, Ryan answers

nonchalantly, I wanted to make sure you were o.k., with Carl away.

Justine sends Lucy to make tea. Lucy slides open the parlor doors and

exits. Justine and Ryan discuss how they haven't heard from Carl,

Justine feels like he's avoiding her. Don't take it personally, says

Ryan, Carl is Carl, he's always been a man of mystery - I only recently

learned he was my father, and my mother had left me long before that, it

was rough growing up. I'm sure she missed you, says Justine, warming up

to Ryan: "Think of me as your mother, I'm the closes you have." He

accepts her invitation to stay for tea; she sends him to wait on the

terrace, while she closes the parlor doors and makes a call on her

cellular phone from the entryway [see below].
After their tea, Justine walks Ryan out. They talk about whether

Carl and Ryan share any personality traits. We're both very loyal,

observes Ryan. He adds, Carl spent so much of his life on the wrong side

of the law, that now he really values trust - that's why he loves you,

"Rachel," because he knows you'd never lie to him.[!] Justine invites

Ryan to come back again, and heads up the stairs as he exits.
Outside the door, Ryan waits nearby until Lucy sneaks out. She

shows him a note she just found in yesterday's trash, in Carl's

handwriting: a phone number, along with "6:00 p.m." Ryan suspects it's a

flight departure time; while Lucy keeps watch, he flips out his cell

phone and calls the number. Sure enough, it's Bay City International,

they had a 6:00 flight last night - to Paris! Ryan vows to find out what

it all means.

A MAN OF THE CLOTH?
Rachel/Braun/Greta/Carl

At the Swiss clinic, Nurse Braun is monitoring the day-room where all
the mental patients wander around exhibiting bizarre behavior [like all
speaking English, apparently]. A nurse asks her about this new patient,
robed in a hooded monk's habit. He thinks he's the pope, snorts Braun,
maybe he'll hear our confessions. The monk nods. The nurses talk about
the Comtesse, she thinks she's a wealthy American, she's delusional, it's
hopeless - I doubt she'll recover this time.

Meanwhile, Rachel is awake in her room, sponging her face and neck

with water from a basin. She hears the doorknob rattle and scrambles to

appear sedated, but she's relieved when Greta enters. Greta says she

looks well, and brings her a piece of cake from a nurse's birthday

party. She starts to hide it in a drawer so Braun won't see it, and

discovers Rachel's cache of unswallowed sedatives. Rachel begs her not

to report it to Braun. As Greta nervously nibbles on the cake, Rachel

tries to convince her she's no longer unstable, and the sedative dosage

is too high. Greta argues that Braun would have her head if she changed

the medication. Braun enters and catches them, angry that Rachel is

still awake. Get her sedated, she snaps, I'll check back shortly. She

exits. Rachel apologizes for getting Greta in trouble; Greta agrees to

cut her medication in half, and watches as she takes the pill. She

exits, and Rachel sponges herself off again and tries to stay awake.
Braun returns to the patient day area. A nurse tells her she has a

long-distance phone call [see above]. The monk crosses the room and sits

at a table near the phone. The call is from Justine, who tells Braun the

final payment is on its way, let me know when Rachel is dead. As soon as

I get the payment, I'll take care of "la Comtesse," Braun assures her.

She hangs up, then takes a closer look at the "monk," who is sitting at a

chessboard. He pulls back his hood a little, and we see the unshaven,

manic-looking face: it's [you guessed it] Carl!
Later, Carl the Monk sneaks down the hallway searching for Rachel's

room. He hides as he hears Braun talking to Greta at Rachel's doorway:

she's sleeping now, long periods of wakefulness coud damage her, Braun

lectures. They scurry off to attend to a crisis with a patient's

straitjacket.[!] Carl emerges, pulls a set of lock-picks from his book

[nice leg!], kneels at Rachel's door and works the lock until it opens.

Still kneeling in the doorway, he sees her in the bed in the darkened

room, and he begins to quote from the poem:
There is in every woman a spark of heavenly fire
Which kindles up, and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity...
Oh, my Rachel, he continues in an impassioned whisper, at last I've found

you. A woman's shadow looms up behind him.

BUNNY, MEET BUNNY
Jake/Guard/Bunny

The Cook County prison guard gives Jake a hard time about visiting

Bunny Eberhardt. Jake won't take "no" for an answer, grabs the guy's

arm, and gets slammed face down on a table. She's my life, he burbles,

she knows who I am. Jake tells the guard Bunny is his sister. Too bad,

says the guard, she's bad news, run while you can. Jake spills a wad of

$100 bills all over t he table, gee I have so much money it broke my

money clip, I can't even count it all or spend it, sometimes I even give

it away. As he gathers up the cash, he slips 2 or 3 bills inside the

guard's jacket front, with a sheepish smile.
The guard leads a shocked Bunny into an interview room with Jake.

Still alive? I shoulda killed you when I had the chance, snarls Bunny.

Toldja so, remarks the guard, as he slams Bunny into a chair at the table
and exits. Jake hands her a box of chocolates he's brought her [just in
case?] and sits in the opposite chair, staring at her as she recounts some
of the psychological anguish she put him through last winter, leery about
why he's here. He admits he has no clue what she's talking about, frankly
doesn't remember her, doesn't even know who he is - but he's getting the
strong impression that she has all the answers. Bunny thinks Jake's
trying to pull a scam on her, royally peeved when he says he's been using
her name and gold cards all over 3 continents ever since he woke up in a
ditch a few months ago. He demands the truth: who's the blonde I've been
dreaming about, 'cause it sure as hell ain't you. When Bunny won't answer
him, Jake wonders if she really could be the woman in his dreams - Allison
warned me, if I poked around in my past I may be disappointed. Bunny
realizes he's not fooling, and laughs at the irony, but still won't answer
any of his questions. Oh, yes, she taunts, I know all about every detail
of your life - loser! She continues to taunt him, enjoying her last
chance to make him suffer. But why, he asks, baffled. I'm a hit-woman,
you idiot, she answers, torturing people is what I live for, and you're
nothing but a loser. Wrong, he says, everything I touch lately turns to
gold. Won't last, she predicts with a sneer, you're still just a low-life
jerk from Lassiter, Jake. He laughts triumphantly at her slip-up; she
tries to deny it, claims he misunderstood her, but he now knows his first
name and where he's from. He demands more details, but Bunny clams up.

He threatens that he's so ruch he can make sure she never gets out. Go to
hell, she tells him. Fine, he says, I'll find Lassiter on my own - uh,
where is it? Go for it, she says, the sooner you find your roots, the
sooner you'll find out I was right about what a loser you are, I couldn't
be happier. Jake calls for the guard - where's Lassiter, he asks, can I
get there tonight? It's in Pennsylvania, he answers, but what's your
hurry Lassiter's a hell-hole [nice playground, though...], nobody ever
goes there twice - it's a dumping ground for losers. Toldja so, says
Bunny. The guard leads her back to her cell, as Jake, undaunted, vows to

head for Lassiter.

PAULINA'S UNFINISHED BUSINESS, Part I
Eddie/Paulina

Paulina and Eddie console each other as they wait for Joe to get

through his surgery. Paulina feels guilty because she couldn't answer

Joe when h e told her he loved her as he was being wheeled away. Why

couldn't you answer? wonders Eddie. She says she was taken by surprise,

her feelings are too recent even though Joe's aren't; she prays it's not

too late. Eddie relates how, while he was on the force, he used to call

his wife every day at noon to say he loved her - she knew how he felt,

but it helps to hear the words.
Paulina, still wearing the blood-spattered outfit, goes to the

hospital chapel and lights a candle. She looks toward heaven and talks

to her "dead" husband [optimist!]. She tells Jake that, even though she

had his funeral and gave away his clothes, she never actually was able to

say goodbye - she wasn't ready until recently, but now it's time. She

says she's finally forgiven him for running out on her with the money and

getting himself killed. Then she says she's met a great guy, it's not

the same as they had but he makes her happy, and it's time to say goodbye

to Jake to make room in her heart for Joe - if it's not too late. As an

afterthought, she asks Jake to put in a good word in heaven [!] to get

Joe through this crisis. Jake owes her this after what he did to her,

and this favor would square things with her.

BAY CITY HOPE
Morgan/John/Joe/Eddie/Intern

Morgan and John study Joe's x-ray as the surgical team (including a

rookie intern) assembles in the O.R. The bullet lies too close to the

aorta to leave it in, they agree, but it's a dangerous operation. Joe is

scarcely under the anaesthesia, when John and Morgan have to leap into

his chest to repair his suddenly ruptured aorta.
Eventually they emerge from surgery and tell Eddie that Joe's in

recovery on a respirator - if he can hang in for the next 24 hourse he

should be fine. Good work, John tells Morgan, and exits. Eddie asks to

see Joe. Sure, says Morgan, he has a tube in his throat, he can't talk

but he can listen just fine. He takes Eddie to Joe's bedside. Eddie

expresses his love and support, and Joe squeezes his hand. Joe tries to

talk, and Eddie is the only one on the planet who doesn't know what he's

saying. Using the medical chart as a writing desk, Eddie hands Joe a

marker and a scrap of paper, and waites while Joe scrawls out P-A-U-L-I-N-A.
Eddie goes to fetch Paulina to Joe's bedside, and leaves them alone

[see below]. He seeks out Morgan and thanks him - and you, too, nurse.

Actually, it's "doctor" - she's an intern, they correct him. Eddie

kisses her hand (she's impressed), apologizes, thanks them again, then

exits to tell the family Joe's o.k. Morgan congratulates the intern

[sorry, I didn't catch her name] on her first surgery, assuring her it'll

get easier. As he exits, her eyes folow him appreciatively (with more

than professional interest). [Ah, yes, the Winthrop legacy continues...]

PAULINA'S UNFINISHED BUSINESS, Part II
Paulina/Joe/Morgan/Intern

Paulina strokes Joe's hair, tells him how scared she was of losing
him and how good it is to have him back again. Then she says emotionally
that she didn't get a chance to tell him before, they took him away too
quickly, but - I love you, Joe. He smiles through the tubing, says she

doesn't have to say it, but she swears it's true, it's been coming on for

a long time. Like a cold, he quips groggily. She explains that his

declaration took her by surprise before, she was in shock over the

shooting, etc., that's why she couldn't answer. Don't ever go away from

me again, she orders.  Morgan and the intern enter to check on Joe;

Morgan tells Paulina to leave, Joe needs his sleep to recover. She

thanks them again for saving his life. The doctors exit, and Paulina

kisses Joe through his tubing. He tries to say something, but she says

save it, we have plenty of time, see you tomorrow. As she starts to

leave, he lifts up his head and weakly manages to say: "Marry me." She

stops in her tracks. FREEZE FRAME.

Well, that's the scoop -
