Here is the update for Another World for Friday, August 26,
1994 (Part I) -

The Trap is Sprung on Ryan
Ryan Gathers Allies
Felicia Teeters on the Brink

Felicia/Marshall

Felicia is on the phone with Jenna, who tells her
Dean's tour will be coming to Chicago. She also says she
likes Felicia's book and wants her to publish it. Felicia
tells her it might be out in the Spring, Marshall will have
months of rewrites for her. The doorbell rings, and she
hangs up and goes to answer it. It's Marshall, dressed in
jeans and a polo shirt. He tells her no rewrites, the book
is ready, he wants to set an immediate date for publication.
Felicia is shocked - this has thrown her for a loop, she's
totally unprepared. She's hired a temporary manager for
Tops and pre-taped a bunch of shows at KBAY - what's she
supposed to do with all this free time? Write another book?
Marshall suggests (kidding). He offers to take up a little
of her spare time by taking her out to celebrate. She
accepts.
He takes her to Sassy's, to listen to a jazz group.
She happens to mention that she used to get drunk here, and
oh, by the way, this was where Lorna was picked up by her
rapist. He offers to take her somewhere else, but she says
she's around liquor all the time at Tops, she'll be fine.
As the evening goes by, Felicia is more and more edgy.
Marshall wonders if she's o.k., she insists she is and he
doesn't have to coddle her by drinking water rather than the
beer he probably prefers. He says he just wants to make her
feel comfortable. That's not your job, she says, it's my
problem - my sponsor says liquor is like a frozen cobra,
when you want a drink it can strike like a cobra, and when
you're sober the cobra is frozen, but it can always melt.
Tonight is particularly rough, but she'll settle down
eventually - "I hope."
By the end of the next set, she doesn't seem any
better. Marshall suggests they leave, and Felicia starts
to bolt for the door. He tries to insist on driving her
home, he feels responsible for the stress she's been under.
She responds adamantly that it's my problem and you can fix
me - if I blame you or anyone else for my wanting to drink,
what does that say bout me? He backs off, and she thanks
him for "whatever this was." He tries again, saying he
doesn't think she should be alone. I'm not, she assures
him, I'm going to go to a meeting. She dashes out, as he
kicks himself (again).
When Felicia returns home, Marshall is waiting at her
door - checking up on her, he admits. She says her AA
meeting helped, and invites him in for coffee, which they
never get to, they just sit and talk the whole time. He
asks why she came so close to slipping tonight. She says it
was anxiety over her book - she's proud of it, but she's not
used to sharing this part of herself with the world and it's
been rougher than she thought. He tells her he's become an
admirer - and now that he sees she's o.k., he'll be going.
She thanks him for his concern, and starts to show him out.
He stops, turns to her, and says: "Sometimes new things can
be a good thing. Remember that." [Who writes this stuff?]
He leaves, and she turns out the lights.

Ryan/Grant/Carl/Amanda/Rachel/Jake/Paulina

As the family stares in disbelief, overzealous Officer
Doyle demands Ryan's badge and gun pending being charged
with stealing cocaine and Barry's cash from the evidence
room. Ryan refuses, saying he was set up and he'll only
give his gun over to Billy. Doyle insists on taking him
downtown; Grant and Carl leap Ryan's defense and offer to
accompany him. Jake offers to call Cass, but Carl says he
can do better than that. After the cops leave with Ryan,
Carl, and Grant, Rachel voices her apprehension. She and
Amanda go to tell Helen to hold dinner, leaving Jake and
Paulina alone. Jake figures Ryan was set up so he wouldn't
find out who Barry was working for. He gets an idea and
tells Paulina he has to go, but he'll be back soon. After
he leaves, Paulina decides to follow him. She tracks him to
Vicky's house, where Ryan has been living. They argue for a
bit about whether she should get involved, finally deciding
to work as a team. Jake's idea is to comb the house for any
sign of the money or drugs, since whoever set up Ryan is
sure to want the stuff found in his possession. Jake
figures they owe Ryan for saving their lives by shooting
Barry. Paulina isn't surprised to hear that Jake has no
idea what they'll do if they find anything.

Ryan/Grant/Carl/Billy

Doyle reports to Billy that Ryan wouldn't surrender his
badge and gun. Billy comes down on Doyle, he was never
supposed to take Ryan's gun, he was just supposed to break
the news. Ryan bursts in with Carl and Grant, and Billy
throws out the chastised Doyle. Ryan complains that Billy
sent a shady cop to arrest him in front of his family,
without so much as the courtesy of a phone call. Billy says
he had to go by the book, no special favors. Carl makes
nice with Billy and reminds him of all of Ryan's
commendations. Billy asks Carl if he knows anything that
would help, but Carl says no. Billy outlines the case
against Ryan, and Grant lets loose with a passionate defense
of Ryan's integrity - Carl is astonished: "Good for you,
Grant," he says. Billy goes off the record and asks Ryan if
he took the evidence to do his own research. Ryan denies
any knowledge of the cocaine at all, and insists he followed
procedure with the money: he took it to Forensics, they
didn't have time to check it for prints, so he took it to
the evidence room and logged it in. Billy wants to talk to
Ryan alone - Grant thinks he should have a lawyer, but Carl
supports the one-on-one meeting. Ryan thanks them for their
support and tells them not to wait for him. Left alone,
Billy asks Ryan who could be setting him up [hmmm - how
about - DOYLE???], but Ryan is clueless. Billy and Ryan
decide to devise a plan to flush out the creep. First,
Billy says he'll drop the allegations against Ryan and
intercede with Internal Affairs. Suddenly Ryan gets a
brainstorm - we're going about this all wrong, I want you to
suspend me right now, then I'll be free to investigate
Carl's shooting and clear my name without departmental
restriction. Billy agrees to give him carte blanche to
investigate as he sees fit (don't ask/don't tell), but he
refuses to suspend Ryan until he has to. Ryan leaves.

Trent/Evan

Trent is amazed that Evan has acquired the cash Ryan
found at Barry's that would have lead to them. Better than
that, Evan says, I've gotten Ryan implicated in the theft -
he's probably being arrested as we speak. Trent
congratulates him on so quickly setting up one cop to catch
another. Now on to Phase 2 - Evan tells Trent to take the
cash, remove any phony bills and replace them with real
ones, and bring the money back so Evan can make sure it gets
found in the right place. Ryan will seem as crooked as his
father, says Evan.

Ian/Josie/Spencer

Ian shows Spencer the books, which indicate a nice
profit under Ian's management. Josie sneaks in to get her
paycheck from the bartender. Before she can get away, Ian
catches her and wants to know why she hasn't been at work
lately. With Spence nearby, Ian demands to know why Josie
hasn't been at work for a week. She finally tells him she
was mad and hurt by overhearing him discuss her low self-
esteem with his "girlfriend" Paulina. He tells her she
missed the rest of the conversation and tries to apologize,
but she's so defensive he finally raising his voice in
frustration. Evan, apparently arriving by Transporter Beam,
suddenly appears and butts in to defend Josie. Ian tells
him to back off, this is private. Josie defends Ian, saying
Ian was right about her and she'll work the late shift
tonight. Ian tells Josie to show Evan to a table. Spence
comes up to Ian and asks about the guy Josie's so cozy with.
He looks alarmed to learn it's Josie's cousin, Evan Frame.
He's ruthless, Spence remarks, he broke up Amanda and Sam's
marriage, he'd better not try anything with Amanda and
Grant. Ian says he's more concerned with what Evan plans
for Josie.
At the table, Evan tries to run down Ian for keeping
Josie under his thumb. Josie tells him Ian isn't like that.
Evan thinks Josie is falling into the pattern of all the
Frame women, having low self-esteem and feeling like they
have to "settle" for crumbs. First Emma, he says, then
Sharlene, and now you and Frankie. Josie protests, Frankie
has a great life, she's very happy. Yeah, for now, Evan
says ominously. He urges her not to give up her dreams,
don't let Ian hold you back, he doesn't understand us or how
much alike we are. [Yikes...] She tells him he's like the
big brother she never had, and he convinces her she didn't
really want to give up her modeling career and he can help
her resurrect it.

Ian/Ryan

Ryan arrives and calls Ian aside to ask if he'll work
with him undercover again, to help smoke out the dirty cop
who's framing him. Last time, he cautions, we knew who we
were going after; this time, we're not so lucky. Ian eyes
Josie, still with Evan, and says he has one condition: Last
time, the undercover work cost me my personal life; I can't
do that again.
When Josie has finished with Evan, Ian pulls her aside
and kisses her. Since she doesn't run away, he takes that
to mean he's forgiven. She says she'll come back to work,
and he promises he'll never discuss her with anyone again.
They kiss some more, but Ryan interrupts and Josie excuses
herself. Ryan explains what this short-term assignment is -
tonight or tomorrow someone's going to plant the
incriminating evidence in my house or car; I want to be
there, and I need your help. Count me in, says Ian. Spence
appears and gushes all over Ryan, offering legal or
financial help. Ryan says he has all the help he needs, but
asks Spence to walk him to his car.
Later, Josie interrupts more kissing with Ian to tell
him she'll be late for work tomorrow - Evan's gotten her an
appointment with someone about her going back to modeling.
Ian clenches his jaw, grits his teeth, and comments that
apparently Evan made her realize she'd abandoned her goals,
if she still has the same goals she used to. He understands
me, she tells him defensively, maybe better than you do.

Amanda/Rachel/Carl/Grant

Paulina calls Amanda to check in to see if there's any
word on Ryan. Amanda asks what she and Jake are up to, but
Paulina is evasive. Amanda reports this to Rachel, and they
talk about the support Ryan is getting from Grant and Carl.
Rachel says she left a message for Spence at the Harbor
Club. She predicts rough times ahead, all because of Iris.
Then she asks Amanda how her latest meeting with Evan went.
Amanda says Evan had a strong ad campaign, but she told him
to do it over just to take him down a peg. Rachel reminds
her she could assign someone else to work with Evan, but
Amanda says she'd lose credibility at Cory - besides, she
has to prove to herself and Evan that he can't ruin her life
again.
Carl and Grant return, and report that Ryan is o.k. for
now but charges could still be filed. Grant is hopeful
because Billy is supporting Ryan; they left him at the
station talking with Billy. Carl says he needs some air,
and he flees to the terrace. Rachel goes to tell Helen
they're ready for dinner, leaving Grant and Amanda alone.
She congratulates him on standing up for Ryan, that's how
families should be. He says the Corys are like that (except
Iris makes it difficult, Amanda interjects), but the
Harrisons have a long way to go, although they're getting
better. They sit and talk about giving their children a
strong sense of family loyalty, they'll all feel special and
loved, no matter what problems they encounter.
Rachel joins Carl on the terrace, and asks if he thinks
someone is going after Ryan to get to Carl. Carl thinks
it's likely, his enemy was warning Ryan to back off the
investigation of Barry. Hope that's all it is, Rachel
comments. She goes in to dinner; Carl says he'll be right
in as soon as he calls Ito. He tells Ito what happened to
Ryan, and surmises that whoever slipped him the counterfeit
bill from his own plates is also behind the frame-up. Ito
says he's checking out the bank's messenger service. Let's
get them, says Carl, it's one thing to go after me, but I
won't tolerate an attack on my family.

Ryan/Paulina/Jake

Ryan comes home and senses he's not alone. He draws
his gun and catches - Jake and Paulina, emerge from the
kitchen with their hands up (he carries a skewer, and she's
wearing oven mitts). They're surprised he's not in custody
(Paulina: "I thought they were taking away your gun." Ryan:
"Obviously not. Cleaning my oven?" Paulina: "I should -
it's gross.") They explain they were trying to spare him
any "surprises," but they didn't find anything. Ryan says
thanks for the effort, sorry it was for nothing - but
someone's going to plant the stuff soon, and I intend to be
there.

     Ian/Evan/Doyle

Officer Doyle arrives at the Harbor Club, and asks who
owns that fancy black sports car out front. Ian smirks and
leads him to Evan. Your car's in a tow-away zone, Doyle
tells Evan, you're in big trouble. He leads Evan outside,
ordering him to move his car. Thanks for the warning, says
Evan; What warning, says Doyle, you got a ticket. Evan
checks around for witnesses, then hands Doyle the doctored
evidence - You know what to do with this, he says. FREEZE
FRAME.
