Here is the fun-filled, action-packed update for Another World for
Friday, August 12, 1994:

* Tom'as and Maggie call it quits (for now)
* Evan and Ian "discuss" Josie's welfare
* Old D&M studio now becoming F&F (Evan Frame & Trent Forbes)
* Sharlene takes a little trip (without leaving the kitchen)

Tom'as/Maggie

At Tom'as' place, he tells Maggie he has to marry Angela
tomorrow, to convince the court he's serious about giving Luisa a
stable home. Maggie: "So the judge hates long engagements?" He
tells her he gets custody in 6 months if all goes well, but don't
worry, I don't love Angela. Maggie figures they'd better split up
to make sure Tom'as gets custody. He's sure his sham marriage can
fool the judge, he doesn't want to lose Maggie. She tells him to
get real - the judge will have investigators to make sure his
marriage is genuine, and she wouldn't put it past Angela to
squeal; and they're both lousy at hiding their feelings, so they'd
better split for real so Maggie doesn't cost him his daughter.
Hang in there, he tells her, we have to play the game but
eventually we'll have the life we want. She says she still
doesn't trust Angela, but he at least gets her to concede that it
wasn't originally Angela's fault. Tom'as hates the way
bureaucracy seems to take precedence over a child's happiness, and
he becomes irate wondering if he might jump through all the
court's hoops, and STILL lose Luisa. He feels like he's about to
explode, and Maggie hands him an old, cracked vase - throw it, she
tells him, you'll feel better. He smashes it on the floor. They
sweep up the mess, and Maggie gives him a birthday present. It's
a video camera, so he can record Luisa for when he's missing her.
Tom'as says he'll miss Maggie too, so he wants to get a few
seconds of her on tape. He records her saying she loves him and
will wait for him as long as she has to, it'll be our secret; then
she blows him a kiss. He puts down the camera, they kiss, then
Maggie says she'd better go before someone sees her. Tom'as
doesn't see the urgency, but Maggie says things have to change
>from now on. They kiss again, Maggie says she misses him already,
and she runs out.

Evan/Trent/Ian/Josie

During the spectacular fireworks display (looked like the
Bicentennial!), Evan steps away to call Forbes and tell him about
Iris's news, that Carl and Rachel are married. He orders Forbes
to find the happy couple and tail them. He warns him that Carl is
very tricky. Meanwhile, Ian and Josie watch from a blanket with
Gregory, who holds his hands over his ears. Ian can't take his
eyes off Josie, and she gets self-conscious. The fireworks over,
Josie tries to distract Ian by getting Gregory started on
clean-up. Ian tells her she looks so happy and carefree, she has
a softness about her that's irresistible. They start to kiss,
when Evan so rudely interrupts; he gushes about the great time
he's having, how he'd been so busy making money he forgot about
the importance of "the basics" - family, family, and family. Ian
isn't impressed, but keeps quiet in front of Josie. Evan mentions
Sharlene, and Josie goes to look for her (see below) while Ian
watches Gregory.

Left alone together, Ian makes it clear that he thinks Evan
is less than sincere; Evan says he's researched Ian's background
and he doesn't seem like the type to give Josie the stability she
really wants, Ian should back off. Ian responds that Evan
shouldn't push it - at least Ian never broke up a family. Evan
says he doesn't need Ian's judgment; Ian answers that he doesn't
need Evan's warnings - "I know how to treat a woman and, from all
reports, you don't - so back off." Josie returns, upset - don't
go in the kitchen, she warns, Mama's having some kind of crisis
and John's taking care of her. Ian gives Gregory a piggyback ride
to the horseshoe pit to distract him. Josie tells Evan she's
afraid the fireworks pushed Sharlene over the edge, and wonders if
Sharly's emergence means Sharlene's gone for good. Evan tries to
reassure her ("I know a little bit about Multiple Personality
Disorder") [since when?]; Ian returns and comforts Josie, all the
while keeping an eye on Evan. They tell her Sharlene will be o.k.
with treatment and with John's help, it wasn't Josie's fault,
Sharlene's recovery will take a long time. Gregory runs up, he
wants Mama to watch. Ian and Evan offer to go play with him, and
Ian volunteers to put him to bed later so Josie will be available
if Sharlene needs her. Use the front door, Josie reminds him.
(More later.)

Sharly/Sharlene/John

This scene is hard to describe, hope you can get the general
idea - very intense, rapid shifts in pace and attitude and tension
levels.
The fireworks trigger a flashback for Sharlene, and Sharly
emerges and relives the explosion on the boat in Lake Michigan.
She's crawling around on the floor gasping for breath, when John
enters, recognizes Sharly, and tries to help her through it.
Sharly rails at Sharlene for letting Taylor Benson lure them to
this disaster. Josie enters, and John shouts at her to stay out
and shoves her toward the door. She leaves, shaken. Sharly
crawls to her feet and starts scrambling back and forth around the
room looking for an opening in the flames (in her mind); then she
is in the "water," panicking because her wrists are "tied
together" and she's scared she'll drown. She kicks around on the
floor, crying I don't want to die, I don't want to die. John
finally grabs her and makes her look him in the eyes: You won't
die, you didn't die, someone saved you, and I think you know who.
Sharly looks confused, then she realizes, it was Kate. She
angrily rejects the idea, Kate couldn't have saved me, I'm the one
in charge. Not anymore, John tells her. Sharly says that when
Kate emerged, she wouldn't let Sharly out anymore - until John got
her all soft and mooshy. John tries to convince her that she and
Sharlene and Kate need each other, she doesn't need to be afraid
anymore. Sharly doesn't trust him - she knows he and Sharlene and
Kate all hate her, but tough, she's not going anywhere, they won't
get rid of her. She splashes water on her face, then lights a
cigarette. She alternates between fury and sarcasm and bravado,
as John confronts her about her connection to and mutual need for
Sharlene and Kate. He brings up her childhood, when her brother
Jason sold her like a whore to his friends - Sharly stepped in and

saved Sharlene like a mother, or big sister, or best friend,
just like tonight when Sharlene couldn't stand the memories of the
explosion. And Kate saved them both in the harbor. He begs her
to stop fighting, Sharlene doesn't hate her, she just doesn't
understand her; but John understands her, and Sharlene and Kate
trust him, so why can't Sharly give it a try. She lashes at him
in fear and desperation, and he grabs her and holds her in his
arms as she sobs and then relaxes. One problem, she tells him:
they trust you because they like you - but you're not my type.
John half-smiles, You're not my type, either, but I can help you
if you'll let me. He tells her that he loves her, that nothing
will happen to her, that no one wants to get rid of her - after
all she's been through, she has nothing to fear from Sharlene or
Kate; even Taylor can't hurt her anymore, or Jason; it's time to
stop fighting and just let go. She walks over and sits at the
table, and John kneels facing her. She closes her eyes, and her
face changes. When she finally opens her eyes and looks at John,
he smiles: "Hi, Sharlene." "Hi," she answers. John: "I didn't
think I was gonna see you again, I thought I went too far." They
laugh and cry and hold each other - Sharlene is amazed and
exhilarated because she actually saw Sharly step aside and let her
out, for the first time. It was the way you loved her, Sharly
didn't feel cut off from us anymore. Sharlene now senses Sharly
and Kate are a part of her, no more tension or fear, she feels
whole now. They embrace and kiss, and John leads her off to rest.

Evan and Josie see this last through the back door. Josie
wants to rush in, but Evan tells her to wait until John says it's
o.k. Ian returns after putting Gregory to bed. Evan gets another
private phone call; Forbes tells him Carl and Rachel didn't go to
Brazil, but he'll put a tail on Ito. Evan tells Josie he has to
go (to Ian's delight). He leaves. John comes out of the house
and tells Josie he's hopeful that Sharlene is back to stay, she
and Sharly went to a different place tonight and things are
definitely different. Josie is overjoyed, but John tells her to
let her mother rest, "they've" been through a lot. He thanks Ian
for his help with Gregory and the picnic, and Josie thanks John
for what he's done for Sharlene. He goes in to check on Gregory.

Later, Sharlene stands on the back porch, assimilating all
she's been through. Gregory comes out to her and says he can't
sleep. She carries him out to the glider and sits him on her lap,
and they talk about how loud the fireworks were - she was scared
at first, until daddy held her and she felt better. She sings him
a lullaby as he falls asleep on her lap.

Ian and Josie stroll around the garden. She thanks him for
being there for her, and he thanks her for letting him be a part
of this night. He tells her he's falling for her, and they kiss.

F&F Offices (formerly D&M) - Frame and Forbes have apparently established
the old D&M studio as their base of operations. Evan slams in and
demands a progress report. Trent admits that Carl has been
leading the press and everyone else on a wild goose chase,
complete with decoys, look-alikes, and phony press leaks. He
tracked Ito from South Carolina back to Bay City, but no trace of
Carl. Evan is irate at first; Trent thinks they should have made
their move while Carl was in town, before he figured out who they
are and what they're up to (!), but Evan says the timing

wasn't
right. Then he decides to change tack, call off the search and
let Carl enjoy his honeymoon - time enough when he
returns...besides, he has more important things in the works, but
he won't tell Trent what he's referring to. Evan tells him to get
out, and Forbes leaves in disgust. Evan takes out the newspaper
clipping announcing Grant and Amanda's engagement (complete with
photo). He looks at it for a moment, then crumples it up and
tosses it on the floor.

LAST SCENE - Accompanied by Elton John's "Can You Feel the Love"

Evan comes down from the upstairs room, turns off lights -
then picks up newspaper clipping, uncrumples it, and looks at it
again. He runs his fingers over Amanda's picture, then folds the
clipping and puts it back in his pocket. He walks to the window
and leans against the wall.
Tom'as lies on his bed and plays the video of Maggie; Maggie
looks at the snow globe with the merry-go-round horse, her eyes
filled with tears. Then they both look out the window at the
moon.
Ian and Josie interrupt their light-hearted clean-up efforts,
long enough to embrace, dance, kiss in the moonlight.
John brings a crocheted blanket outdoors, and drapes it over
Gregory on Sharlene's lap. He sits with them, puts his arm around
Sharlene's shoulders, and they kiss. As they sit in the moonlight
- FADE TO BLACK.

Yours cordially,

Vicky (vkorosei@midas.sinclair.edu)
