Lila pulls a fainting spell to ensure that Shane has
no time to grant Vicky's request for a private
      tete-a-tete. Grant's snooping uncovers Paulina's
secret connection to Cindy. Carl returns home and
receives a warm welcome from everyone except Amanda,
who bitterly accuses him of being responsible for
the massive coronary suffered by one of Corey
      Publishing's former authors. Rachel quickly
intervenes to put an end to the dispute but later
privately admits to Carl that she wishes he had
consulted with her before firing a writer they had
published for twenty years. Meanwhile, eavesdropping
on her mother and stepfather, Amanda is intrigued to
learn that Alexander blames Carl for the death of
his first wife. Though Felicia urges him to let go
of his hatred and his need for revenge, Alexander
refuses to forgive Carl for his sins. Hinting that
he knows about her pill popping, Grant advises
Paulina to play along with the story he's fabricated
about his wife's phantom pregnancy. Although Jake
reminds her there's no pressure, Vicky assures her
old friend she'll be at the playground the next day
to seal their engagement. Carl explains to Rachel
how Alexander's wife was tragically caught in the
middle of a gun battle between his men and the
police. Later, confessing that he's been having some
frightening nightmares, Carl speculates that the
apparition which is haunting him is a remnant of the
life he left behind. Determined to be thin for
Jake's wedding, Paulina begins taking the diet pills
      again.
