Here is the update for Another World for Friday, July 18, 1997 - certainly
more interesting than last Friday, IMHO...

* Shane ISN'T a Doctor (yet), but he PLAYS one on TV...
* Grant and Cindy - more o' the same
* Josie's shower provides setting for Shane's Women Showdown
* Sofia spearheads Nick's defense strategy
* Cass (FINALLY!) calls his shrink

SHANE ON THE LINE

Hospital Lab - Tyrone stops by with separation papers for Shane to
sign; as soon as Lila signs her copy, Ty will file them with the court to
make it official. Shane walks Ty out to the hallway [see below]. Vicky
is at the desk, picking up health forms for the kids' camping trip. She
sees Shane, and flashes back to the intimate scene Lila had staged for her
benefit in Gary's office. When Shane spots Vicky, she flees [see below].
Later, the receptionist brings Shane a message to call his wife at
the Harbor Club [see below]. Then Joe enters and shows Shane the diet
pills he'd found in the trash, did they cause Paulina's heart
palpitations? It's possible, says Shane, I'm glad she talked to you about
this. Joe admits she hadn't, it's not like her to keep secrets. Shane,
in an ethical bind, just says she's self-conscious about her weight [i.e.,
looking like a REAL PERSON!]. But I love her, no matter what, Joe
protests - she's my WIFE! Shane winces a little at this mention of
marital loyalty; he urges Joe to open up communications with Paulina,
maybe even try a support group. He adds, I hope she talked to the doctor
who prescribed these pills, about the side-effects. Joe is upset to hear
that the pills weren't over-the-counter (as Paulina had told him). Shane
offers to talk to Paulina's doctor. Sure, whoever THAT is, Joe answers
tersely.

LESSONS IN POLITICS

Grant's Suite - Lila shows Grant the papers she's been served, upset
that her divorce is looking inevitable. Not to worry, he smirks, you have
a very good lawyer. He hints, if she can seduce her husband, it will
nullify the terms of the separation - voila', no divorce! He tells her to
follow her heart, the Law is no match for "true love." He rips up the
separation papers - papers get lost all the time, he coos innocently.
They share a conspiratorial laugh on the couch, as Cindy bursts in and
catches them. Grant introduces them, I'm handling Ms. Roberts' divorce.
Cindy gives Lila a sugary smile until Lila exits [see below]. Then she
reminds Grant icily that a divorce case won't be good for his image.
Grant smugly points out the Lila-Shane connection: stopping this divorce
action will prevent Vicky from being happy, keep Shane from raising Kirk,
and make Vicky look immoral for chasing a married man. He gloats for a
while, then Cindy shows him the newspaper headlines about Donna running
for mayor against him. He tries to lure her into another episode of
"Baby-Quest," but she eludes his grasp and says she has to pick up more
campaign posters from the printer. She suggests he work on a strategy to
beat Donna: people LIKE her, she has money, clout - and never killed
anyone! Grant isn't worried - I know just how to handle Donna Love, he
smirks.
Later, Cindy returns home to find Grant on the phone, hiring an
investigator to dig up dirt on Donna - focus on her penchant for younger
men, like her engagement to Matt Cory [and let us not forget Jake?
although neither one will get Grant many brownie points at the Herald,
eh?]. Cindy reports that Donna already has posters up, but Cindy hired a
college kid to plaster Grant's posters on top of them. Grant is
delighted; then (playing all the roles) he tutors Cindy in "handshakes for
all occasions" - meeting the police chief, an old guy at a church picnic,
a working mother with baby.  Kiss the baby for a photo op, he instructs;
Cindy mimes kissing the baby he's "holding." Kiss the old guy, too, he
tells her. She gives Grant a peck on the cheek. One kiss leads to
another...and they begin to devour each other (no thermometer involved).

SHOWER SURPRISES

Carlinos - Josie tries to foist Felicia's dog Paris off on Paulina at
the restaurant, but Paulina does a quick tap dance and convinces her it's
her problem. Josie gives up and heads for the Harbor Club to dump the dog
back on Felicia. Paulina calls Donna and says the unsuspecting bride is
on her way to the shower.

Harbor Club - Donna alerts the gathering guests that Josie's been
snared. Gary (having seen the "entertainment") is still hanging around,
and Felicia orders him to get lost. Later, she finds him chatting up the
beefy male stripper who's flexing in the side room, and again chases him
(Gary) out.
Donna grouses to Amanda about her photo in the paper; she assumes the
Herald will endorse her over Grant, but Amanda hedges. Donna is
distracted when Vicky arrives. Donna or Grant, some choice, Amanda and
another guest [anyone know this woman? I didn't recognize her] agree.
[See? I TOLD you we need Frankie back!] Meanwhile, Donna goes over to
Vicky and urges her to stop moping over Shane, try to get in the party
spirit for Josie's happy occasion. At that moment, Paulina dashes in,
gasping for breath; she finally manages to shriek out that Josie's on her
way in. Everyone scrambles to hide. Josie enters, holding the dog, and
everybody leaps out, yelling "Surprise!" Totally surprised ("I fell for
the old 'Hold the Dog' trick!"), Josie happily greets the guests. Vicky
is dismayed as one more guest arrives a moment later - Josie and Gary's
new buddy, Lila.
As Lila shuttles gifts to Josie (carefully logging each one on a
clipboard), Vicky and Paulina overhear Amanda and Felicia observing how
pretty Shane's wife is. Josie opens a gift from Amanda and Paulina - easy
cookbooks ("They were Amanda's, but she never opened them," teases
Paulina), and a hand-lettered certificate for a getaway for two at the
Cory cabin [on "Crane Lake" - never heard that before; tribute to the much
maligned but greatly missed Matt?], catered by Paulina. Next gift: an
Egyptian wedding box from Felicia, to hold all their hopes and dreams.
Vicky gives her fancy bath oils from France, and the boys had included a
bubble-blowing kit. Men love that, notes Donna, as everyone looks at her
with eyebrows raised. Josie thanks Donna for hosting the party; Donna
hints slyly that the party isn't over yet. Lila presents Josie with the
list of all the gifts, along with the ribbon bouquet (you carry it during
the rehearsal, for luck, Paulina explains). Josie is touched, embracing
Lila gratefully. Vicky escapes to the punch bowl, but Lila follows her.
She claims she's not contesting the divorce - it's killing me, but I just
want Shane to be happy, and he thinks that's with you. Did you realize
this before, or after, that scene in Gary's office, Vicky snipes. Sorry
you saw that, Lila lies, we're complicated, things happen when we're
together; I'll try to just stay away from y'all - he's told me all about
his relationship with you. Then I'm sure he told you he's asked me to
marry him, Vicky digs, walking away.
In the side room, Donna drapes herself over the hunky stripper and
tells him it's time to get into his cowboy costume for Josie's surprise.
It'll be a surprise, all right [not to us, of course], he assures her
cryptically. Donna returns to the bar and answers the phone; it's Shane.
Vicky looks hopeful, but the call is for Lila. Vicky steps aside as Lila
takes the call. Amanda notes to Paulina the obvious tension between
Shane's women, suggesting Shane is a two-timing snake, Vicky should wise
up. Vicky retreats even further when Lila tells Josie her "husband" wants
to see her. Josie thanks Lila for her contribution to the party; Lila
shoots a glance at Vicky and says she hopes her presence didn't upset
Vicky too much. Josie offers to smooth things over, and Lila thanks her
and exits [see below]. Josie tracks down Vicky, explains that Lila's been
so good to her and Gary lately; Vicky assures her she's o.k., nothing
personal against Lila, it's a small town [yeah! are you listening,
writers?]. Josie says she's sure Lila knows her marriage is over, it's
just hard for her to let go.
Felicia retrieves Josie for the final event, as two waiters roll out
a giant cake. To the beat of Dolly's "Romeo," the hunk pops out of the
cake, wearing a cowboy hat, a string tie, and chaps - and little else. As
he wriggles his fine bod around the floor, the women squeal and hoot
appreciatively. Finally, he bumps and grinds his way up to Josie and
pushes back his hat with the barrel of his revolver. It's Gary, to her
surprise and delight. Afterwards, Josie informs Gary it's bad luck to see
her before the wedding, he'll have to find somewhere else to spend the
night. He objects, but Felicia agrees - he can stay on her couch, since
she's his best man. This is (not entirely good) news to Josie; Gary had
intended it to be a surprise, but Josie claims she thinks it's great.
Paulina tells Vicky she can see how much it hurts her to see Lila
lurking around, you obviously love Shane. She assures Vicky she can
survive a broken heart by leaning on her friends, like Jake and Paulina.
Vicky is confused about what she wants, everyone thinks Lila's such a
paragon. I feel like someone's lying to me, Vicky adds, but I don't know
who - Shane, or Lila?

Carlinos - Shane has his medical books spread out on the counter,
studying for his board exam, when Lila arrives. She "confesses"
sheepishly that "without thinking" she'd sent Gary and Josie a wedding
gift from the two of them [just like she's done for the last four years,
no doubt...]. Shane's perturbed, but Lila promises to set them straight.
Just give me the separation papers you've signed, he says. Papers? What
papers? I didn't get any papers, she lies; oh, well, I'm sure they'll come
tomorrow...[why doesn't she just move in with Grant and Cindy?]

SOFIA'S MISSION

Cass's Office - Nick agonizes over Cass's recommendation that he cop
a plea and confess to raping Toni, to ensure a 2-year prison term instead
of risking a possible 20. Sofia is sure he's innocent, but it's his
decision. Nick can't bring himself to confess to something he's pretty
sure didn't happen, but his memory is still a blank. Sofia wonders if
some therapy might help fill in the gaps. Cass [duh! why didn't he think
of this himself?] makes a call to the ever-popular Dr. Emily Bradford (his
own shrink). It's urgent, I need you to hypnotize a client, he tells her
[see below]. As they wait on the couch, Sofia suddenly realizes Nick is
left-handed. An idea forms...

Cop Shop - Ty tracks down Toni at her desk. She seems angry - not
just because she's missing Josie's shower, and not because Ty was so rough
on her at their practice cross-examination, but at herself for crumbling
under his questioning. She expects Cass to be even tougher when she's on
the stand for real, but she vows she'll be fine in court, drawing on her
anger instead of her fear. Glad I won't have to face your questions in
court, you're too tough, she adds. Nah, I'm working on another "big
case," Ty says sarcastically (Shane's divorce - little does he know...).
Toni asks Ty to leave so she can get back to work. He says he'll be back
after her shift to bum a ride home, and exits. Sofia enters looking for
Joe. Toni flees to the locker room, but Sofia follows, expresses sympathy
for the rape, and offers to help. Get your boyfriend to confess, Toni
snaps. Sofia tries to suggest it might have been someone else who
assaulted her, recounting how sweet and gentle Nick had been when they
were on the run with Vicky's kids. Toni reminds her she'd called 9-1-1 in
fear of Nick - if you'd pressed charges like I told you, then maybe...
Sofia gingerly asks her to reenact exactly how the assault took place, to
help her understand. Toni resists, but eventually grabs Sofia from
behind, using her right hand to cover Sofia's mouth. She's too upset to
continue, but Sofia's seen enough. It couldn't have been Nick, she
announces. She suggests a lefty would have used his left hand to grab
her, and Nick's a lefty; but Toni disagrees. She returns to the squad
room, with Sofia following. Sofia sees an apple on Toni's desk and tosses
it to her. Toni catches it in her right hand. You're right handed, Sofia
guesses, I'll bet everyone reaches first with the hand they favor. She
exits, as Ty returns. He can see Toni's upset, but she claims it's
nothing.

YOU'RE GETTING SLEEPY...SLEEPY...

Cass's Office - The cool, classic Dr. Bradford arrives. Cass
explains they want to reconstruct a block of time Nick can't remember.
Nick says he's desperate to know the truth. Cass reminds him, the results
aren't admissible in court, but it could be a big help. Emily agrees to
try hypnosis. Cass dims the lights and sits nearby to take notes, as the
session begins. Apparently there's no problem putting Nick under. Emily
takes him back in memory to the night he fell off Sofia's balcony and hurt
his head. He winces in pain, slurs his words as if drunk, and describes
feeling hostile toward Toni for trying to keep him and Sofia apart. When
she asks about his seeing Toni in the parking lot, he becomes very
agitated and unable to see anything. Emily guesses he's still blocking a
painful memory, and suggests he back off and view the scene as an
observer, watching himself in a movie. No longer slurring, Nick's memory
starts to clear. He speaks in the third person: Nick is drunk, looks
awful; he's searching for the medal he threw away; he sees someone between
the cars - it's Toni; he leans over her, she's screaming and pushing him
away - NO! NO! Where is Nick, Emily presses, where's Officer Burrell,
what is Nick doing to Officer Burrell [not TOO slanted a question, eh?].
She's on the ground, Nick cries, she's hurt, he hurt her, oh my God, it's
too late, it's too late! Emily quickly brings him out of it. What
happened, Nick asks, what did I say? I think you just confessed, Cass
answers grimly. Zoom in on Nick's distressed face - FADE TO BLACK (should
have been FREEZE FRAME, IMHO, but they didn't ask me...).

Welcome back to at least SUPPORTING status, Cass! And Happy 15th
Anniversary on Another World, Stephen!

Later,
