another dark and stormy night in Bay City):

* Rachel gets an earful from/about Maggie
* Sofia runs into Matt

CABIN FEVER
Gabe/Lorna

At the Cory cabin, Lorna sits working on a jigsaw puzzle while Gabe
carries in an armload of wood from the woodpile, but no fire yet, the logs
are rainsoaked. This is Lorna's first jigsaw puzzle, and she loves the
challenge. Gabe is delighted, his father got their whole family hooked on
them. Lorna notes the similarity with his profession of solving crimes,
piece by piece. He promises to get her a pile of puzzles to solve at
work, he can call her every half hour to remind her to work on another
piece. She gets him to admit he wants to check up on her constantly until
the Stalker is caught. After that, he says they should get away together,
he wants to take her someplace where she's never been. You already have,
she smiles. They make out on the couch...

Later, as they enjoy the solitude of the remote cabin (no phone, no
visit from Felicia every five minutes), they discuss how happy Felicia is
for them and how much she loves her daughter. She'll be a mother-in-law,
Lorna realizes with a laugh; do you think your mother will like me, even
though I'm not Jewish? She'll love you, Gabe assures her, and she didn't
seem to mind that Dad was Catholic. Lorna urges him to maintain ties with
Cindy, his dead wife's sister. He says it makes him so happy to think
that Lorna will soon become his *wife*, and I'm glad there's no phone, and
Joe is holding the fort back at the station, nothing to interrupt what I'm
about to start. Again? Lorna giggles, as they resume their passionate
kisses.

FAMILY TIES
Rita/Michael/John/Tom'as

Late that stormy night, Rita finds Mike in John's office, working on
plans for the trauma unit. She tells him to go home before he collapses,
but he says she should be grateful he's willing to put in the long hours -
the equipment has arrived, she just needs to pick a medical team. John
enters, testy at finding the confab in his office. Rita advises the
brothers to try to get along, and exits. Mike offers to go for coffee.

You may have bought us a trauma unit, John snaps, but I want nothing from
you personally. Mike can't fathom his attitude - you have everything: a
great job, a woman who loves you, all the visitation you want with your
son - and you saved my life, I know you care. Just doing my job, sneers
John, I'd do the same for the Stalker, don't try the brotherhood crap on
me. What's it gonna take for you to open you heart and rejoin this
family, yells Michael, after all we've been through, I never felt like I'd
lost my brother until now. "Saint" John isn't moved: you crossed the line
when you slept with my wife. [Oh, puh-leeze!] EX-wife, Mike reminds him,
and she isn't interested in me. Sharlene's smarter than you, John
observes - you betrayed my trust, and you can't buy it back with big
donations or good deeds. Rita bursts in - a bus overturned on the highway
in the rainstorm, the casualties are starting to come into the hospital.

Mike leaves [see below].

Later, as the crisis continues, Tom'as watches as John tells a
bandaged couple that their daughter has some broken bones, but she'll be
o.k. As they go off to visit her, John comments to Tom'as how hard it is
to be afraid of losing your child. Tom'as confides that he's sending
Luisa off tomorrow to live with her grandmother Connie while he's in med
school. He agonizes over whether she'll feel abandoned, whether they'll
grow apart, she'll be losing more than just me, she's losing you,
Sharlene, Josie, Gregory as well. John reassures him he's doing the right
thing, Luisa will be fine, just concentrate on becoming a good doctor.

Tom'as says he only hopes he can be half the doctor and father that John
is. Thanks, I needed that, smiles John. Tom'as exits, and John pulls out
a postcard Greg sent him from camp.

UNREAL ESTATE
Mike/Donna/Jake/Vicky

From the porch of the abandoned house, as the rain pours down, Vicky
tells Jake she's intent on tracking down the owner and making an offer to
buy it tonight, with or without his help. She shows him the "lucky" gold
chain Lorna gave her. He thinks she's nuts, it's after midnight, and
besides, what makes her think the house is for sale? But he reluctantly
agrees to help since she can't be dissuaded. As she bounces out to the
car, he gives the door a frustrated blow, and the door knocker falls off.

He pockets it and follows her.

They end up at Carlino's. Jake warns her the price of the house will
escalate if she's too eager. I'm rich, she reminds him. She wheedles him
into calling Babs to track down the owner and make a bid - I know it's
after midnight, but remind her of the huge commission she stands to make
if the deal goes through. He goes to make the call, then returns to
report that he only got the machine, and he didn't feel like leaving a
message: "Your client wants to buy a dilapidated house out in the middle
of a cornfield." Donna enters, relieved to see Vicky back safe and sound.

Vicky can't believe Jake had been worried enough to call Donna after
Vicky's call was cut off. Donna supports Jake, but Vicky insists she's a
grown woman, mother of 2, she can take care of herself.** You've lost your
grip on reality, grumbles Jake, it came off in my hand. He pulls out the
door knocker and plops it on the table. I'll hire a handyman, chirps
Vicky. Donna figures out Vicky's found a house she wants to buy, but Jake
insists it's a big mistake - as her best friend from forever, he's
entitled to be majorly overprotective and follow her around, you're lucky
to have me in your life. Donna spots Mike entering [see above], and
smilingly observes that Vicky is lucky to have someone in her life who
cares that much.

Mike joins the trio, and Jake urges him and Donna to join them for
linguini. Donna thinks it's too late for dinner, but Mike talks her into
some zabaglione. Get your own table, Vicky tells her parents, I need to
talk real estate with Jake. They adjourn to a nearby table, and Vicky
eyes them with interest, they sure look cozy over there. Jake, annoyed at
the distraction, tells her to MYOB. That's funny coming from you, Mr. -
Mr. Nosy Parker! She laughs, suddenly remembering how Bridget always
called him Mr. Nosy Parker, even as a kid, because he was always into
everything he shouldn't be. Jake tries to get her to look at the real
estate section of his fine paper for a real house, but her mind is made
up. This is the house I want, she insists, holding up the door knocker,
it even has a lucky address, seven-eleven!

Meanwhile, Donna is happy to have run into Mike, I almost called you
but I figured I'd monopolized enough of your time lately [murder charges,
etc.]. He asks how she's doing, and she says fine, but admits with
self-amusement that she kinda misses all the attention. He laughs, teases
her that "You LOOK good, that's the most important thing!" She says she's
back at work at KBAY [remember KBAY?], up to her ears with the backlog,
only sometimes she's lonely. You still miss Matt, Mike guesses; no, not
Matt, she answers coyly. Suddenly Vicky hops over from the other table -
Dad, I need your help, right now!

Later, Donna has returned to Jake and Vicky's table, as they wait for
Michael to return: he soon rejoins them after popping over to use the
hospital computer. He's accessed the real estate database and located her
house: the locals want it condemned, but the taxes are all paid up on it;
they tried to buy it to tear it down as an eyesore, but the anonymous
owner apparently doesn't want to sell.  Jake looks smug (and relieved);

disgusted, Vicky storms off to the ladies' room. Jake assures Donna and
Mike that it's all for the best, the place is a wreck. But Vicky loves
it, Donna sympathizes, people should get what they love sometimes. She
goes off to see what's keeping Vicky, and quickly returns - Vicky's gone!

Jake grabs his jacket and tears out the door to find her.

     Meanwhile, Vicky has apparently been beamed over to the old house;

she walks in, and again hears the now-familiar Ryan windchimes. I knew
it, she smiles, you really are here...

KILL ME LATER
Nick/Joe/Tom'as/Rachel/Maggie

Nick, in a panic, bursts into the police station looking for Joe.

Joe is livid when Nick tells him Sofia (who just got her license) just
took off full speed at night in the storm, driving who knows where. It's
all my fault, Nick moans. He soon realizes that Joe never got the note
they left him, and admits they were going to Chicago to get married. Joe
(naturally) wants to tear him apart. Kill me later, Nick argues, right
now let's just find Sofia. He tells Joe she was driving an old junk heap
he'd borrowed from a friend at the paper who's on vacation, he doesn't
know the license plate number. Frustrated that a DMV search would take
hours, Joe just puts out an APB - but Tibbs reports that the roads are
flooded, numerous accidents, it could be a long time before they could get
to her. Frantic, Nick dashes out to find her himself [see below].

Joe heads over to the hospital. The EMT's are wheeling in victims of
the bus crash, and Joe leaps wildly at a woman on a stretcher, Tom'as has
to restrain him and assure him it's not Sofia. Joe explains that Sofia's
missing, out driving in the storm, she could be in trouble and alone. He
goes back to the station; there's a phone call waiting for him, it's the
commissioner about the Stalker case. Yes sir...yes, the captain has the
investigation under control...yes, I'll give him your message. He hangs
up with a huge headache - still no sign of Sofia's car in a 5-county
search, including a helicopter sweep, among the slew of stranded cars.

Joe's really worried, the ER is full of storm victims. Another phone call
- hey, Paulina...No, everything's fine, just busy on this tough case...no,
tell your intuition to take a rest...oh, Sofia's great, couldn't be
better...

Cory mansion - Maggie, looking like a drowned rat, comes home with
Rachel. Rachel says Carl left them alone so they could talk in private,
what's upset you so much? Maggie clams up. As she dries Maggie's hair
and makes her some hot tea, it reminds her of how Ada used to wait up for
her. I wish you'd had a mother like her, strong, strict, but loving and
protective, says Rachel. She suggests maybe they can get away for a
while, but Maggie quickly says no, she has some things she has to take
care of. If you can't talk to me, says Rachel, maybe you can talk to
Sofia? She's gone, sniffs Maggie, and it's all my fault. She exits to
the library to be alone. Rachel [for some reason] tries to call Matt at
his hotel in Chicago, and she looks worried when she learns he hasn't
checked in yet.

Maggie ends up on the terrace, still miserable. Nick [see above]
finds her there, and demands to know what she did to Sofia. He claims
he's searched everyplace he could think of, this was his last hope. I
haven't seen her, Maggie assures him, she'll never want to see either of
us again. He chews her out for ruining Sofia's life and their future, you
got what you wanted. Not yet, she hints, I couldn't let you run off and
start a new life with Sofia, what about this life (she indicates her
abdomen [any chance she's actually pregnant?])? Nick winces, especially
angry at her for waiting until the last (worst) possible moment to drop
this news on him. She claims she's known for about a month, tried to tell
him, but he was always with Sofia. Nick is still worried about Sofia, you
broke her heart. Yeah, Maggie agrees ironically, it's hard when you're
hurt by the one you love; so what are you going to do, now that you know?

He asks if she's seen a doctor. Like you care, she snaps, you only care
about Sofia, not me, and certainly not this baby. What about you, retorts
Nick, do you really want to have a baby?!? He follows her through the
terrace doors into the living room, just as Rachel comes down the stairs.

>From the foyer, she overhears as Maggie says "Nick, I'm pregnant, and
there's nothing anyone can do about it!" Rachel is appalled.

ACCIDENTAL MEETING
Sofia/Matt

In the torrential downpour, Sofia loses what little control she had
of her car and skids head-on into an oncoming vehicle - which happens to
be Matt's. As she swerves to try to avoid the collision, she ends up in a
ditch at the side of the road. Matt makes his way through the brush with
a flashlight, and is dismayed to find Sofia, sitting lifeless behind the
wheel. He scrambles around the car, trying to get in. From the passenger
window he sees her move, and he's relieved. I'll be right back, he
shouts, dashing off. As some nasty sparks and smoke appear under the
hood, Matt returns, breaks the rear window, and unlocks the passenger
door. He props it open with a rock and check's Sofia's wrist, but can't
find a pulse. He finally finds a carotid pulse, confirms that she's still
breathing, and notes that she's lucky to be alive, since she wasn't
wearing her seatbelt. He cautiously extricates her from the car as flames
leap up, carrying her to safety. She eventually opens her eyes slightly,
recognizes him, and mumbles for him to tell Rachel I had a wonderful time
at her party; I wish... She falls silent. Wish what? Matt asks, trying
to revive her, something about Nick? Think about Nick, he urges, think of
how much Nick loves you. As he cradles her not far from the wrecked car,
he tries to keep her warm and conscious, it'll soon be daylight, then
someone will find us and we can get you to the hospital. Think of
everyone who loves you, he babbles, Joe, Paulina, Tony, Maggie, all the
Corys - Nick will be frantic with worry, hang on for Nick. He hears a
helicopter, gently lowers Sofia to the ground, and jumps up to flag down
the chopper. He yells and jumps around, but they don't see him. He grabs
the flashlight and beams it around the sky to get their attention, as the
searchlight sweeps the area. FREEZE FRAME.

**Line of the Day
Jake, trying to get Vicky to be more careful: "Your ex-husband,
Senator Freddy Krueger, wants to take your son away from you!"

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
