Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Bay City - here is the
update for Another World for Friday, July 12, 1996:

* Josie and Gary get a surprise houseguest
* Matt gets the goods on Carl and Blair, confronts Carl (but not Rachel)
* Frankie senses impending doom and gloom
* Vicky finds her elusive witness - too late!

WELCOME TO OUR HUMBLE HOME
Josie/Gary/Ozzie

Chez Sinclair-Watts, Gary has gotten off work early and Josie
welcomes him home with open arms. They're both exhausted from their
all-night stakeout waiting for Ozzie (who never showed up), then having to
work all day. But they're not too tired to race to the bedroom. Outside,
a gloved male hand tests their doorknob (it's locked), then picks up a
large rock and starts scoring the adjacent pane of glass.

After making love, Josie and Gary are feeling more positive - they're
a great team, if they stick together anything's possible, things could
actually work out for them. They have a mock argument about laundry,
erupting into a pillow fight. Suddenly they hear glass breaking in the
living room. The gloved hand reaches through the broken pane. Josie
grabs her gun, Gary grabs a baseball bat, they argue over who goes first
(cop with gun wins), and they approach the living room. Josie trains her
gun, her hands shaking visibly. They spot a pair of legs sticking out
from behind the sofa. Josie pounces - then - "What are you doing here?"
she asks, puzzled. The intruder turns out to be Ozzie. They offer him
some food, and he makes them promise not to tell anyone where he is, the
Whistling Killer with the Big Shoes knows who he is and is coming after
him, he wants to kill me. We'll keep you safe, they promise him - did you
recognize him? As Ozzie eats them out of house and home, Josie and Gary
agree he looks scared, probably with good reason. Gary thinks they should
call in Gabe, or at least Tibbs, but Josie worries that the killer had
inside information on Ozzie's discharge, maybe a hospital employee. Or
even a cop, Gary adds. They offer to find Ozzie a safe haven. I need a
nest, Ozzie agrees - whaddya say, lovebirds, can I roost with you?

They put him in the spare room, then discuss the situation. No law
against inviting a friend to spend the night, Josie rationalizes. He
could be dangerous, notes Gary. He's harmless, she answers. What about
your career if Gabe finds out, Gary presses. We have no choice, she says
thoughtfully; we can do this, we're a team. In that case, he says, taking
her hand, why are you keeping secrets from me - like, why was your hand
shaking when you held the gun? Nerves, she answers. That's not how you
act under pressure, he reminds her. It's nothing, she insists. Oh yeah?

He empties the bullets out of the gun and offers it to her: Let me see you
pick up this gun and aim it at me - go on, do it. She slowly reaches to
grasp the gun...

CAT AND MOUSE, Pt. I
Carl/Rafael/Matt/Rachel

Cory Mansion - on the terrace, Carl surreptitiously gives Rafael a
small folio with Grant's visitation schedule, I want you to trail him and
keep a log of everywhere he goes, everyone he sees. Carl has included a
large (counterfeit) bill, and notes that Raf doesn't seem as excited about
the money as he used to be - come into a windfall? No reason to be
greedy, Raf answers, poker-faced. He exits; Carl, with a smug smile,
returns to the parlor to find Matt waiting for him, glaring. You sure pay
Rafael well, what exactly does he do for you? I don't interfere with you
running your newspaper, Carl points out - "A wink's as good as a nod to a
blind horse." [Huh?] Matt accuses him of the habit of finding some young,
desperate person on the streets and paying them big bucks to do his dirty
work for him, is that what happened to Blair? I slept with Blair, says
Carl pointedly, I'm not sleeping with Rafael. I'm getting close, Matt
warns. He exits, greeting Rachel in the foyer as he leaves. [see below]
Carl emerges and expresses his wish to spend some quality adult time with
Rachel. She feels the same, but Steven and Kirk are impatient to get to
Carlino's for lunch. Sorry, I'll be a little late, says Carl. She teases
that he's uncomfortable around little kids for long periods of time, but
he assures her he loves "the little no-necks," especially since they make
her so happy. He exits, but won't say where he's going - it would spoil
the surprise, he tells her. [see below]

BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD VIBRATIONS
Frankie/Chris/Matt/Rafael/Morgan

Carlino's - Frankie sits alone at a table, wrapped in an ominous
aura. She barely notices when Chris sits at her table and tries to
question her about Cass's defense strategy for Donna. She snaps out of it
long enough to assure him that Cass is trying to get to the truth. As
Chris continues to press her, she returns to her vibes, tries to end their
conversation, then suddenly hears a scream in her mind, and she grasps her
head between her hands. It's going to happen again, she says aloud,
trembling - someone's in danger, why can't I see who it is? You don't
look well, Chris observes, what's wrong? If I told you, you wouldn't
believe me, she answers, I have to find Capt. McNamara. She pushes past
Chris, nearly knocks Matt down in the doorway, and dashes out. Chris
expresses skepticism to Matt about Frankie's "vibes," do you believe in
that ESP stuff? She's not a crackpot, Matt assures him, she's helped the
cops before. [see below]
Later, Frankie comes out of the police station, starts toward the
hospital, then freezes in her tracks, where she collides with Rafael, but
she scarcely notices. She edges over to a bench along the square and sits
facing the hospital, almost in a trance. Morgan, on his way home [see
below], spots her and joins her, you don't look too well, let me get you
to the hospital. No, she insists frantically, terrified, there's danger
all around, I can't find Gabe or Joe, someone has to do something -
Suddenly she screams, then bursts into sobs on Morgan's shoulder. It's
over, she whimpers ruefully, I have to find Cass. What's over? Morgan
tries to stop her, but she rushes off.

CAT AND MOUSE, Pt. II
Matt/Chris/Rachel et al./Carl

Back at Carlino's - Chris hands Matt the file of info he's gathered
on Carl and Blair's past dealings, you may not like what it says. Before
they can talk, Rachel enters with Steven and Kirk. Chris excuses himself
to go back to the paper. Rachel is happy to see Matt, commenting how both
he and Carl rushed out on her earlier. Don't compare me to Carl, he
snaps. Rachel wonders if he's hostile at her for having had reservations
about his dating Blair. No, he says, you were right, she hadn't changed
as much as I'd hoped. She didn't have time, comforts Rachel, it took a
long time for Carl to change. Has he really changed? asks Matt, do you
know what he does when you're not together? We don't check up on each
other, Rachel responds. Wonder why he's standing you up here this
afternoon? needles Matt.

Later, Matt is sitting at the counter poring over the file when Carl
arrives, carrying a couple of huge gift boxes. Before he can reach
Rachel's table, Matt grabs him and insists on a moment of his time. He
reveals that the file he's reading documents how Blair (Jackie) took
bribes from some high-rise projects to ignore code violations, the
companies got caught, were fined, and went bankrupt; Carl later bought up
all those buildings for a song, made a huge profit, but one of the
buildings collapsed and several people were killed. The case was thrown
out of court, I was completely cleared of any responsibility, Carl reminds
him. I'm not sure Mom would see it that way, suggests Matt, she might
even leave you if she knew the truth - did you have Blair killed so she
wouldn't tell your dirty little secret? You don't know me very well, Carl
warns, don't play this game with me... Rachel comes over to welcome Carl,
senses the tension and secrecy, and asks what's going on. Matthew has
something to tell you, says Carl, don't you, lad? Go on, tell her...

Matt hesitates, then says "I love you, that's all." He exits with the
file; Carl looks tense.

Meanwhile, Rafael gets some of his remaining cash from a sack in the
trunk of his sports car and pockets it, walking back through the town
square. This time he collides with Chris. [Has this boy had his eyes
examined lately? How's his collision insurance?] Running from somebody?

Chris asks suspiciously. M.Y.O.B., Raf snarls, hurrying off.

DESPERATELY SEEKING YVETTE
John/Morgan/Vicky/Michael/Gabe/Jake/Yvette/Lorna

Police Station - Gabe is on the phone with Dana when Vicky and Mike
burst into his office to report they've brought a witness who can clear
Donna. Meanwhile, Yvette waits nervously in the squad room, trying to
keep out of sight when Jake enters looking for Vicky. He raises a stink
when the cops unceremoniously escort him out the door. Unguarded, Yvette
paces nervously, waiting to make her statement, and notices a flier on the
wall encouraging citizens to report illegal immigrants. Vicky persuades
Gabe to keep Yvette's identity off the record in exchange for her account
of who planted Courtney's tape player in Donna's purse at the hospital -
but when they go out to get her, Yvette is gone. Mike chews out the
returning uniforms for letting Yvette slip away, as Vicky wails in
exasperation, we were THIS CLOSE to clearing my mother!

Hospital - John sees Morgan working yet another double shift in the
Emergency Room and orders him to go home, but Morgan refuses. John
suggests all this overtime won't help him edge out Fax for Senior
Resident, then realizes it's not about the job, it's about Courtney. I
can't go home, he admits, I see her everywhere, it hurts too much, I need
to be working. Sorry, says John, but you're running on empty, go home and
rest and don't come back for 24 hours, that's an order. I won't rest
until Donna Love pays for killing my girlfriend, Morgan vows. [see above]

     Gabe, Mike and Vicky show up at the hospital looking for Yvette;

Vicky checks with Personnel and gets Yvette's last name and work schedule,
she's on duty now but hasn't checked in yet. Jake arrives, and Vicky
tells him they're trying to find their new witness. Keeping out of sight,
Yvette overhears when Jake, miffed at Vicky's leaving him in the dark,
reveals that he saw that woman with the accent enter the hospital, too bad
certain people didn't trust him enough to fill him in before, or he'd have
paid more attention. Gabe orders the civilians to stay put while he calls
in more cops to aid the search. Mike goes to the Security office to watch
the monitors in case she tries to leave the building. Vicky explains to
Jake about Yvette's fear of being deported, and he chews her out for not
trusting him. I don't have time to argue, Vicky retorts, my only concern
is clearing my mom - are you with me or not?

Gabe questions John about Yvette, revealing in confidence that Yvette
is a potential witness to clear Donna of Courtney's murder, but she's
running scared. Is she in danger? John asks, as Lorna comes up. Are you
saying the killer could be here in the hospital? Lorna asks Gabe
nervously.

Jake and Vicky adjourn to John's office; Vicky insists that she
couldn't tell him about the witness, Yvette wanted no reporters. Jake is
still hurt that she considered him just a reporter rather than her best
friend from childhood back in Lassiter. We used to be able to rely on
each other, he argues, what's happened to us? She hesitates - then Mike
bursts in to report that Gabe's come up empty so far, Yvette's
disappeared! While Jake goes out for coffee, Michael expresses
frustration at not being able to go to Donna with good news about the
witness. John pops in, says Gabe told him everything and he's cooperating
in the search for Yvette, still no trace. Mike blasts him for dragging
his feet while Donna rots in jail. I'm doing all I can so back off, John
snaps. Vicky sends Mike out to cool off, and tells John she appreciates
his help, and also that Mike told her what had happened between him and
Sharlene. No matter what Mike thinks, says John, I do want to help Donna,
I still care about my family. He exits, and Vicky sits and broods. A
kinder, gentler Jake returns, apologizes for blowing up at her, and
assures her he cares about more than just the newspaper. She explains why
she didn't tell him about Yvette: she gave herself to Ryan, heart and
soul, and since his death she's been trying to get her life back together,
but she just can't bring herself to trust another person because they
always leave. I'm not going anywhere, I promise, he tells her.

Meanwhile, Yvette scurries to her locker in the custodial storage
area and starts packing her gear into a tote bag. She freezes at a noise,
then relaxes. But then the Stalker's-eye Camera approaches, whistling a
tune. She turns and backs up against the lockers, terrified. Please, she
begs Stalker-Cam fearfully, as it comes closer and closer, I didn't see
anything, I won't tell anyone, I promise - please - NOOOOOO! She sinks to
the floor in tears, as it gets closer, and closer, and closer...

Lorna furnishes Gabe with blueprints, Yvette's personnel file and the
work schedule of the cleaning crew, but she's obviously edgy. She admits
she wasn't too scared when the murders seemed random, but with a hospital
employee being scared to be here on hospital grounds, it's a little too
close to home. Gabe describes the dynamics, politics, and pressures of
the investigation, he's shorthanded without Gary and Josie. He encourages
Lorna to go home, get some rest, stay there until this all blows over -
not as a cop, but as a husband protecting his future wife. I'll stay, she
says, I feel safe with you. They embrace.

Still waiting for word on Yvette, Jake urges Vicky to come to him for
help, she can trust him, she doesn't have to go it alone all the time.

She hugs him gratefully; he gazes into her eyes, then breaks the tension
by offering to hit the vending machines for her. Lorna enters to report
that the cops are searching the whole hospital starting from the top
floor, no luck yet. Vicky sends Jake out for cheese crackers; when he's
gone, she casually asks Lorna what's in the basement. Boiler room,
equipment storage, maintenance supplies... [Maybe also Yvette the
Maintenance Worker's home base?? Duh! Why not look there first, oh Bay
City's Finest???] As soon as Lorna leaves, Vicky checks that the coast is
clear and makes a break for it. Jake returns, sees the empty room, and
rushes out to find her.

Vicky cracks open the door of the maintenance storage room, silently
enters, and approaches the open locker. She spots a pool of blood on the
floor, with a trail leading to a big laundry hamper. Gingerly she lifts a
corner of a cloth and finds a human hand and arm - fearing the worst, she
uncovers the face - yep, it's Yvette. She quickly turns and runs smack
into Jake. They both scream. FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
