Welcome to the Friday, 7/28/95 Update for Another World: lots of new

clues, no new answers!

* Maggie and Tom'as - Does Luisa Want a Sibling?
* Mike's Secret Half-Emerges - Nick Takes a Powder
* Joe Uncovers a Loose End
* Jake Leaves SOMEONE'S Heart in San Francisco - But Whose?

Hay, Hay, Hay!
MAGGIE/TOM'AS

Maggie finds Tom'as in the Hudson barn (shirtless, of course),
working out his frustration on the heavy bag. He asks pointedly if it's
over between them - what was she doing with Nick just now, he demands.

Maggie admits she was just with Nick, he's going through a hard time right
now but there could never be anything between them. Tom'as isn't
convinced; women are attracted to wild, dangerous guys like Nick, if he
were mature and responsible she'd have no use for him. Maggie protests
he's got it all wrong, but Tom'as says he's tired of being dependable and
reliable and boring, that's not what he's really like inside. I'm not as
nice as you think, he tells her (trying to sound ominous). Maggie claims
she loves that he's dependable and nice. Tom'as insists he's no saint,
he's just a sucker who got saddled with too many burdens too early in
life. Maggie says she doesn't believe he considers Luisa a burden, and
she admires that he didn't just say "screw it" to all his
responsibilities. Tom'as admits he's sometimes jealous of Nick, he'd love
just once to be able to tell the world to go to hell like Nick does, do
something unpredictable. Like what? Maggie asks (trying to sound
innocent). Tom'as takes Maggie in his arms and kisses her. As she
responds, he moves his hand up her back under her vest. The kissing
intensifies, then they sink to the floor and - yes - have a "roll in the
hay."

After they make love, they lie together under the blanket (on top of
the blanket would be more comfortable, but that's just my opinion of hay).

He asks if she thinks it was a mistake. No, she says, we've waited so
long for this. [Yeah, and they're both obviously sooooo ready...] I love
you, they tell each other - but Maggie looks like something (or someone)
is on her mind. Tom'as says he feels like they've finally sealed the
deal, he knows now he doesn't want anyone else in his life, she's his
whole life. [Famous last words.] She kisses his mouth, his face, his neck
- but doesn't answer.

"I'm No Junkie," Claims Mike
MICHAEL/NICK/JOHN/BUCK

Nick, who was about to skip town, hesitates by Michael's room on his
way out. He decides for some reason to peek in and have a word, but
catches Mike injecting himself. Nick calls him a junkie and a hypocrite,
and storms down the stairs with his duffle. Mike follows to try to stop
him. He catches him at the door and tries to say it's not what you think.

Feeling hurt and betrayed, Nick lashes out verbally and tries to split,
but Mike grabs him and demands he stay and listen to the explanation.

Save your lame excuses, rages Nick, I've got eyes - and your
self-righteous lectures on personal responsibility are pretty lame now,
too. He breaks away from Mike's grasp and bursts out the door, running
into John on the porch. John: "What's going on?" Nick: "Ask the junkie."

He disappears into the dark, then sneaks around the side of the house and
listens at the window.

John quizzes Mike about Nick's outburst. Mike brushes aside his
questions, then a car pulls up. Mike and John go to the door as the
thoroughly unpleasant Buck Mason approaches. Mike is less than thrilled.

He introduces him to John as Nick's probation officer. Buck demands to
know where Nick is, right now. None of your business, says Mike, he's
still got an hour left on his curfew. Nick is still listening from his
hiding place as Mike and Buck go at each other (verbally). Mike tells
Buck to cut Nick some slack. Buck answers that Nick is a screw-up, and he
gets away with terrorizing decent citizens because of guys like Mike who
pull strings to keep them from answering for their crimes. When Nick
slips up again - and he will, Buck promises - I'll be there to catch him.

Get a life, Mike responds. Buck leaves, but warns that he'll call back in
an hour and Nick better answer. He exits. Nick slips away unnoticed.

John congratulates Mike on defending Nick against Buck's attitude.

Then he demands to know what Nick meant when he called Mike a junkie. Mike
says he has to find Nick, but John won't let him go - what's the secret
you've been hiding ever since you got back to town? he insists. My secret
was Nick, claims Mike, Nick was just mouthing off, I gotta find him before
Buck calls. He dashes out the door and down by the road where his pick-up
truck is parked.

Meanwhile, Nick has sneaked into the truck and is trying to hot-wire
it. When he hears Mike coming, he ducks down so he won't be seen. Mike
shouts his name a few times; getting no answer, he pounds on the hood of
the truck in frustration and worry, then continues his search. After Mike
is gone, Nick finally gets the engine to turn over, and breathes a sigh of
relief. Thanks for nothing, he shouts angrily toward the house, then he
drives away.

When Mike gets back to the house, John is talking on the phone,
asking someone to research something and call him back. He hangs up
quickly and latches onto Mike before he can slip away again. This time he
won't take no for an answer, level with me: Are you a junkie? [Thought
John was a doctor - he can't tell?] Mike denies it, livid at John for
talking trash while Nick is missing. John orders him to roll up his
sleeve (which ALL older siblings would love to hear from a baby brother)
and prove there are no needle marks. Mike flatly refuses, so John
struggles with him and rips a sleeve off. Mike's arm is bruised and
discolored. My God, gasps John. Mike says it's no big deal, he fell in
the barn. From the loft? John asks sarcastically, those aren't ordinary
bruises, I can tell your platelets are low [whatever that means]. O.K.,
says Mike, ya got me, I was injecting some vitamins for my low platelets,
but Nick saw me and assumed it was heroine. John senses there's something
more: You're sick, aren't you, he asks quietly - What is it?

Oh, Didn't I Mention...?
JOE/PAULINA/EDDIE

Joe brings Paulina to his house to visit with Eddie. Eddie sees them
acting like a couple, and excitedly spreads the news to his dead wife Rose
in heaven. They confirm they've been on a real date. Eddie gushes all
over them, how his lifelong dream for his son has been fulfilled. He
want's to cook for them; they say they just ate, but he insists on
whipping up some Zabaglione for a celebration dessert. Joe takes him
aside and tells him he doesn't have to make such a fuss, no big deal, if
we wanted to be alone we'd have gone to Paulina's place. We're going at
our own pace, don't push, he continues, we just want to share this quiet,
comfortable beginning stage with you. He insists Eddie stay and chat with
Paulina, Joe will make the dessert. He pretends to be insulted when she
asks if he's sure he knows what he's doing, and he exits.

Eddie and Paulina sit and talk about losing their spouses, then
feeling miserable when they'd see happy couples. Paulina asks if Eddie
would like to find another relationship. No, he says, leading her to the
front door. As they view the street outside, Eddie explains that he still
sees his wife everywhere, he feels her presence and talks to her - not a
great dating tactic. He wonders if Paulina is still upset that Joe lied
to her about Jake's last day. No, she answers, I now understand he wanted
to keep me from being hurt, finding out Jake was leaving me when he died.

Thanks to Joe and you, she continues, I've been able to forgive Jake and
move on with my life.

Later, Paulina tries the Zabaglione and thinks it's wonderful. Joe
credits Eddie with teaching him all his cooking secrets. Paulina says
Eddie should consider opening a restaurant. Eddie says actually he and
Rose thought about it, but since she died he hasn't had the heart - but I
know she's happy about you and Joe. He takes the dishes and heads for the
kitchen. Paulina and Joe smile at each other and talk comfortably about
how happy they are, and how they've changed each others' lives. Paulina
says the whole day has been perfect, the bad times seem so long ago:
Jake's leaving; their being kidnapped by Bunny and Svenson... Joe's ears
perk up, this is the first he's heard the name Svenson. He presses her
for more info on this loose end. Svenson was Bunny Eberhardt's henchman,
Paulina explains, astonished that his name had never come up before;
Svenson just came in near the end, then he completely disappeared - is it
important? Probably not, says Joe, but I hate making a thorough
investigation that leaves anything out - how do you spell his name?

Paulina thinks surely Svenson's name would have come up before if it was
important, but she humors Joe by spelling the name for him. He writes it
down.

Eddie returns as Paulina is saying she has to go. He gives her a
hug, and Joe walks her out. They kiss goodnight and she starts to leave,
but then runs back for one last kiss as Eddie watches from inside,
beaming. After she's gone, Joe comes back inside, scowling over the name
Svenson. He tells Eddie it's nothing, just part of an investigation at
work, but Eddie can see he's really bothered by it.

Do You Know Me? (I Ain't Karl Malden - or Am I?)
JAKE/ALLISON/WAITER/FLIGHT ATTENDANT

Jake takes Allison to a fance restaurant in San Francisco. A waiter
recognizes him from a long time ago. Jake pumps him for clues to his
identity. The waiter says Jake was here around Christmas time with a
blonde; the waiter had been desperate for money at the time, and Jake had
had a pile of cash [no credit card receipts, Jake notes] and left him a
$200 tip when he really needed it. But Jake had never mentioned where he
was from or why he was there, the waiter says. Allison presses the waiter
for details about the blonde, despite Jake's attempts to spare her
feelings. Well, the waiter euphemizes, she had a lot to offer. Jake
barely conceals his delight. The waiter has to get back to work, but Jake
is excited at this clue to his past.

As he digests this new info, Allison reminds him with worried
irritation that she's still in the room - what about me? she asks. Jake
considers his words carefully, and tells her he realizes he can't make a
commitment to her. For some unknown reason, she suddenly accuses him of
typical male immaturity, looking for greener pastures, a sexier
girlfriend. He makes her understand it's not her, she's wonderful, but he
just needs to try to find out who he is, to get his memory back. She says
she'd hoped they were making new memories together, but he responds that

it's just not working. He's decided to fly to Chicago and scope out

those two small towns he was in: Crawfordsville and Bay City. She wants

to come along, but he doesn't think she'd enjoy watching him track down

this blonde who's been haunting his brain. I'm leaving tonight, he tells

her solemnly.
On the flight to Chicago, Jake is browsing through a recent issue of
Brava (with Grant's face on the cover). The flight attendant, checking
her passenger list, gets Jake's confirmation that his name is Bunny - I
have no idea wat my parents were thinking, he quips. She tells him
they'll be in Chicago in a couple of hours - someone special waiting for
you? I don't really know what's waiting for me, he answers, his face
clouded with uncertainty. FREEZE FRAME.

Well, that's it for another week,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
