Congratulations, triskaidekaphobics, you survived another crisis!
Taking no chances, this episode is filled with stereotypes, standard
devices, and foreshadowing with all the subtlety of a semi driving up
Main Street - where's Cass & Frankie when you need 'em?? Ah, well...

Here is the update for Another World for Friday, June 13, 1997:

* Vicky senses Lila on her trail
* John begs for time, but Felicia calls it quits
* Jake and Amanda plan their future
* Etta Mae opens "Lucky Lady," Toni gets a surprise visitor
* Carl helps spring Shane; Derek points finger at Lila as accomplice

INTRUDER ALERT

Vicky returns home from her unpleasant encounter w/ Grant and Cindy,
only to find her door ajar (Lila hiding in a corner). She's about to
enter when Steven comes home from school. She sends him to stay with a
neighbor while she investigates. She grabs her trusty umbrella and scours
the house, but apparently Lila takes the opportunity to escape unseen.
The house is safe by the time Steven returns, brandishing a hockey stick
to help his mom (the neighbors weren't home). He tells her he misses
Bobby/Shane, and asks if he's coming back. Vicky misses him, too, assures
him the murder charge against Shane was false, but now there's a lot of
legal red tape before he can be released. Steven finds the envelope with
Vicky's name in fancy lettering, which she'd forgotten in the turmoil over
Grant's visit. She tears it open, reads the letter, and her jaw drops in
shock [see below].

BREAKING UP IS EASY TO DO

John comes back to Felicia's place to explain what the frip he was
doing sleeping w/ Sharlene, and finds Alexander with her. Alex leaves
reluctantly, at Felicia's request. John sees she's been packing up all
his things to throw him out, and urges her not to end their relationship
until they have a chance to calm down and talk things out. She doesn't
want to hear his excuses, reminding him that her biggest fear was always
that he still loved Sharlene and would someday realize his mistake and go
back to her - he just proved her right. John tries to convince her that
he and Sharlene are really over, he wants to be with Felicia, and they can
work through this crisis if she'll just give it time and not make any
hasty decisions. She recoils from his touch, says she'd never understood
why Sharlene was so angry over the end of a failing marriage, why she
couldn't just let go, why she hated Felicia so much - now I know how she
felt, I really trusted you. She retreats to her room with a weary sigh,
leaving John standing woefully in the living room. He's musing over the
carton in which Felicia has collected all his stuff, when she returns from
the bedroom - with his "Doctor of the Year" award, symbolic of the night
they realized they were falling in love. She remembers how they danced
together under the stars - it was a perfect night, she recalls. [Uh,
excuse me, wasn't that the night Ryan died???] She hands him back the
trophy, urging him not to camp out at the hospital, his office couch is
bad for his back. He repeats that he loves her, vows not to give up on
trying to win her back, and exits her suite with the carton. She watches
him head down the hallway, then shuts the door and leans agains it, numb.
John shows up at the hospital with an overnight bag. Tom'as
confronts him, saying Sofia told him the wedding to Felicia is off. Just
postponed, I hope, John corrects him. What happens to Sharlene now,
Tom'as presses, she's like a mother to me, she was really hurt and alone
when you dumped her. John says he has no intention of hurting Sharlene
again - don't worry, everything will be fine. He exits to his office; You
don't look fine to me, John, Tom'as mutters accusingly under his breath
[hee-hee! Go, Tom'as!].

Meanwhile, Alexander drops by to see Rachel (newly home from the
hospital) with a big bouquet of flowers. She assures him she's doing much
better and thanks him for his support, but suspects he's here for another
reason.. He admits he's worried about Felicia and wants Rachel's advice on
how he can help. She sweetly but firmly advises him to leave Felicia
alone. He's disappointed, but she suggests Felicia needs some distance
from both him and John at the moment. She also encourages him not to give
up, Felicia might surprise you. She does, constantly, he chuckles. They
agree they both think what's meant to happen will happen, no matter the
odds, if they stop fighting fate.
Steven runs in, tells Rachel that Vicky dropped him off to play with
Alli. He asks if she's really having twins, like Mom and Marley? Well,
one's a boy, Rachel tells him. She turns to introduce him to Alex, but
Alex is gone, so she takes him up to the nursery to see the double
everything. Later, Steven ponders the idea of having baby uncles. Or
aunt and uncle, Rachel reminds him. He offers to play with them, even
babysit when he's older. Life can be weird, he observes. Way weird,
Rachel agrees.

Alex returns to Felicia's suite. He tells her he wants what's best
for her. If only I knew what that was, she mutters. She puts on a cheery
face and says she's decided to accept his offer of dinner on his yacht in
San Francisco. He tells her there's plenty of time for other dinners
later. She feels rejected again, but he replies cryptically that her
destiny demands that she get through the next few hours on her own, it's a
step toward our future. She wonders why John would throw away their
future for one stupid night. Maybe someday we'll find out, Alex answers.
He kisses her fingertips and exits.

PARTNERS

Amanda is at the Herald, talking on the phone with Rachel (welcoming
her home from the hospital). She hangs up quickly when Jake breezes in.
He announces he's back on the job, now that Vicky's crises are over and
her hero (Shane) has been cleared of murder charges. Amanda is skeptical
that Jake will really stick around, predicting he'll bolt again the second
Vicky calls with another crisis. He swears he's given up on Vicky, seeing
how much she loves Shane, and when Matt comes back he intends to buy out
Matt's share of the paper. Amanda implies she might want to buy out Matt
herself. Jake says fine, she's been a great editor in his absence and he
loves the articles and stories she's written, to her surprise. He
suggests they go have dinner together to discuss the future of the Herald.
She looks befuddled, but asks for a moment to go freshen up first. No
sooner does she leave, than Vicky enters and begs Jake for his help,
showing him the mystery letter. He scans the note: "Thanks for all you
did to save my husband; our marriage means everything to me." Vicky notes
that her spare house key is missing, guesses that Lila has probably been
skulking around her house, and she's nervous for her kids. Also, Shane
had implied the marriage was over, but apparently Lila doesn't agree. Jake
grits his teeth and just says Vicky and Shane have a lot to talk over,
he'd like to help her later but he has plans right now - a business dinner
with Amanda. Vicky looks stunned, but agrees she has to stop running to
Jake at the drop of a hat. She hugs him in thanks for his support and
friendship. Amanda returns and sees the embrace. Here we go again, she
cracks, walking out. Jake dashes out after her [see below], leaving Vicky
standing in the doorway, looking thoughtful.

Vicky returns home, calls the clinic, and leaves a message for Sister
Patrice to call her back A.S.A.P. Then she flashes back to the time when
then-Bobby had demonstrated on a bench in the town square what it felt
like to drive a race car. She smiles at the memory, then retrieves the
framed photo of herself and Shane from the bookshelf. Are you ever coming
back to me, she asks the photo. (No answer.)

OPENING NIGHT

Toni and Chris have been helping Etta Mae prepare to open her new
coffee house, apparently renamed the Lucky Lady. E-M is excited and
nervous, but they assure her she'll do great. Chris hints that E-M has
told him Toni's secret (that she has a really nice singing voice). Toni
is irritated that her mom told Chris she'd be singing at the club,
although she'd never agreed to it. She refuses, even when Chris turns on
some music and begs for a sample. E-M exits to bring in more decorations,
and Chris persuades Toni to dance with him. The music is very sultry, and
they end up kissing as they sway to the rhythm. Toni warns Chris not to
toy with her feelings, he'd better be serious about her. E-M returns, and
suddenly remembers to tell Toni her "cousin" Tyrone is coming to visit,
should be here any minute. Toni is very excited, and informs Chris that
Tyrone is an old family friend, they grew up together, and she remembers
him as a skinny bookworm/nerd. [Any guesses what he REALLY looks like?]
She again kisses Chris to quell his incipient jealousy. Jake and Amanda
enter, asking if they're too early for dinner. E-M agrees to serve them,
if they'll help Chris and Toni clean up? She exits, leaving Chris and
Toni still in lip-lock. How do we help them with THAT, Jake quips to
Amanda.
Later, while Toni and Chris share a table, nose-to-nose, Jake and
Amanda are finishing their dinner. Jake demands to see the chef; when E-M
appears, he offers his compliments, everything was fantastic. Amanda
agrees, offering to send their reviewer to give the place a write-up in
the paper. Jake pulls out some cash, then pauses for effect: Would we be
... CUSTOMER #1? He insists she tack one of the bills up over the cash
register. Sure, if you'll sign it, E-M agrees. As he autographs the
bill, Amanda comments on the good vibes - Jake and I haven't argued once
all evening. Jake gives her a funny look, then he hustles her out - first
giving E-M a kiss on the cheek, then (as they pass the other table)
spontaneously kissing Chris as well. They exit. Chris, ignoring Jake's
gesture, presses Toni for more info on Tyrone. She describes a puny kid
who used to come crying to her for help when the other kids would steal
his glasses. As they laugh over her early cop tendencies, a tall, VERY
well built young man enters [guess who?]. We're not open yet, Toni tells
him. Then I'll just stand her and look at you, you look so good, the man
says familiarly. Chris rises to confront him, but then E-M enters.
Tyrone! she squeals. Tyrone laughs, and he and E-M embrace happily.
Chris scowls, as Toni first gasps, then beams.

FREE AT LAST

At the New Orleans jailhouse, Shane is waiting to be taken back to a
holding cell when Morris enters and informs him, a couple of high-power
lawyers are in court as we speak, getting the judge to release you
permanently. He's confused and disbelieving, until Carl appears. Morris
introduces himself to Carl and exits. Shane embraces Carl gratefully.
Carl explains that Gary told him what was going on. He presses Shane for
info about his previously unmentioned WIFE??? Shane admits he and Lila
married young, he took the rap for Rebecca's murder when he thought his
affair with her had driven Lila to kill her, but now it turns out the
killer was Derek, Rebecca's husband. Carl wonders why Lila didn't step
forward to clear Shane. Shane says Lila is fragile and unbalanced, she
disappeared after he was arrested, but then tracked down his sister the
nun after his escape; they'd put her in a clinic near Bay City. Carl
reports that Gary just saw her in New Orleans, but Shane says he hasn't
heard from her. Carl suspects she'll soon resurface, and presses Shane
for his intentions towards Vicky, who's in love with him. Shane assures
Carl he's in love with Vicky, too, but it's complicated with Lila. He'd
thought she killed Rebecca, that he'd never see her again when she
disappeared after the trial. Then she'd heard he was still alive [how??],
tracked down Patrice, then tried to kill herself. She obviously didn't
succeed, observes Carl wryly [and maybe suspiciously?]. Shane thinks she
may believe she still loves him, but he's just grateful he was wrong about
her killing Rebecca. Then Morris reenters, leading Derek through to a
holding cell. Carl has to restrain Shane from attacking Derek, but Derek
implies Lila wasn't as innocent as he thinks. He informs Shane that he
and Lila were also having an affair, and he killed Rebecca because Lila
begged him to, so they could be together. Shane calls Derek a liar, as
Morris leads him away. He continues to stew over whether Derek's claims
could have any truth to them. He doubts it, but it keeps bugging him. I
went to jail for her, nearly died for her - maybe I didn't really know her
at all, he observes. Carl urges him to focus on the future, he has a lot
of friends now, but Shane is so disturbed that Carl suggests they find
Lila and get some answers. Shane agrees - but how? I'll help you, Carl
promises.

After slipping out of Vicky's house, Lila returns to her room, sits
on the bed, opens her purse, and pulls out the photo of Shane and Vicky
that she'd lifted from Vicky's house. Oh, Shane, she weeps, stroking the
image of her husband's face. She [predictably] pulls out a pair of
scissors and slices the photo down the middle. She crumples the Vicky
half with one hand, while with the other she carefully stashes Shane's
picture in a decorative box. She clasps the box against her chest and
sinks back against the pillow, weeping. FADE TO BLACK.
