Welcome to Bay City: two people leave town as two others return! Here is
the update for Another World for Friday, June 14, 1996:

* Maggie helps Cecile skip town before her secret is revealed;
  will she tell the truth?
* Rachel leaves town as Carl plots to protect Vicky from Grant
* Donna unsuccessful in avoiding being questioned - with good reason!

WAS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANTED TO TELL ME, MOMMIE
DEAREST?
Maggie/Frankie/Cecile

Winthrop house - Maggie tries calling Cass at the bookstore, but no
luck. Frankie arrives home with her arms full of groceries and asks
Maggie to help out [HA!]. She tells Maggie that Cass is all tied up on a
legal case, you probably can't reach him. The phone rings, it's Cecile,
who tells Maggie not to believe what Cass and Frankie have been telling
her. Maggie's clueless, but Frankie overhears enough to be concerned.

When Cecile realizes Maggie's in the dark, she tells her Frankie got
Felicia to fire her, now she's being kicked out of her apartment - come
over right away and, uh, bring your credit cards... Maggie accuses
Frankie of some plot to get Cecile fired to get back at Maggie. Frankie
scoffs, Cecile screwed up all by herself, but she won't elaborate;
besides, why would I attack Cecile to get to you, when I know you don't
give a damn about her?  She again asks Maggie to help with the groceries;
BTW, she adds, Cass and I do have something to talk with you about, so be
available tonight. When Frankie goes out to her car for the rest of the
groceries, Maggie checks her wallet and realizes all her credit cards are
maxed out - but Frankie's purse is sitting unguarded. She pulls out
Frankie's wallet and smugly removes her credit cards.

Maggie goes over to Cecile's and finds her packing all her stuff to
leave town. I've decided to summer with the Viscount in Europe, she says
- and with no job, no home, no money, there's really no reason to stay.

Except me, says Maggie, hurt. You'll be fine, wherever you end up, says
Cecile cryptically. Meaning what? Maggie wonders. Cecile covers and says
she knows Maggie's been unhappy living in suburbia with the Winthrops.

Hey, I could come to Europe with you, Maggie suggests, you've always said
you wanted that. Cecile considers it - but, uh, how much allowance do you
get from your trust fund? Not enough to get you a villa on the Riviera,
Maggie snorts. Then she suggests moving in here when Cecile leaves, and
I'll tell everyone you're just on vacation, you'll be back soon; just
please call Cass and tell him I'm old enough to live on my own. Cecile
evades her request and checks her wallet - oh, dear, she gasps
(unconvincingly), I've been robbed - do you by any chance have any cash to
tide me over until I get to the Viscount's? And did you bring the credit
cards? Maggie hands her what she's brought, and Cecile accepts gratefully
- then notices Frankie's name on the cards. Where did you get these, she
asks, mildly scolding but amused - then she readily pockets them, by the
time Frankie misses them it'll be too late. Maggie again begs her to get
Cass to o.k. her moving out of his house. Don't be childish, says Cecile,
preparing to leave. Maggie starts to whimper, and Cecile hands her a
fancy handkerchief. Actually, you're the lucky one, pouts Cecile, all you
have to do is wait a few years, you'll get your trust fund and have a
fortune, while I have to survive by batting my eyelashes at rich old poops
like the Viscount. Maggie has to agree. Cecile tells her to keep the
handkerchief to remember me by, it's Belgian lace. She gives Maggie a
last embrace - I'm so sorry I was such a wretched mother, can you forgive
me for having you kidnapped, and for telling you all those dreadful lies?

What lies? Maggie asks suspiciously. Cecile sighs and checks her watch -
there's really no time, I'll miss my flight - but you ought to hear this
from me, I have something very important to tell you before I leave
town...

GEE, DIDN'T MEAN TO CAUSE TROUBLE
Michael/John/Josie/Donna/Cass/Joe/Fax/Felicia

Mike comes to the hospital in the morning with some fresh clothes for
Donna. He stops by Sharlene's office, but she's not there. John enters
and tersely tells him Sharlene has the day off. Mike says he has to go,
he has a meeting with Carl about Vicky's return. Before he can leave,
Josie stops by to leave a note for Sharlene. When John asks about her,
Josie is only to eager to tell him that Mike nearly got Sharlene arrested
for helping Donna evade the cops. John chews Mike out for dragging
Sharlene into his sordid doings with his ex-wife. Josie claims she didn't
mean to cause trouble [yeah, right], she just wanted to let Sharlene know
she's not being charged with anything [why not just call her at home?],
now if you'll excuse me I have to go drag Donna back for more questioning.

Mike urges her to go easy on Donna in the nervous state she's in, but
Josie is unsympathetic, more concerned that Donna might try to escape
again. She exits, and John continues to chew Mike out for endangering
Sharlene, and for putting Josie in the position of nearly arresting her
own mother. I won't forget this, John promises.

Meanwhile, at police headquarters, Gabe erases his suspect board and
puts it aside, as Felicia arrives. He gives her a big check for the
battered women's shelter, all the cops wanted to contribute in memory of
Courtney. Felicia accepts gratefully, then asks about the investigation.

Too soon to tell, he says. As he walks her out, he asks about Lorna at
the conference in St. Louis. It's keeping her busy, she answers, but she
said to give you a big hug and a kiss from her - don't worry, I won't
inflict myself on you... But Gabe insists on collecting, and gives
Felicia a big hug.

Later, John goes to the bookstore to visit Felicia, he's had a rough
morning. Fax is there to get a double cappuccino, tells John he's been up
all night preparing his presentation for the Board to beat out Morgan for
the residency. Don't underestimate Morgan, John cautions. Fax browses
while he's waiting for his coffee, as John produces a surprise for
Felicia: he's had a clasp put on the gold chain they found, and he puts
the chain around her neck. Fax drifts back over, intrigued, and they tell
him how they found it in a fish they caught, it's our good luck charm.

It's very nice, Fax comments, as he drifts away again. Felicia asks John
what had upset him so much at the hospital; it's Mike again, sighs John,
this time he nearly got Sharlene arrested. He explains how Mike's been
helping Donna avoid police questioning, then he dragged Sharlene into it,
which wasn't fair to Sharlene or to Josie. Felicia notes how jealous he
always gets when it comes to Mike and Sharlene, it's not healthy to be on
the outs with your brother like this, don't you think you should let it
go? Can you do than? They gaze into each other's eyes, then he smiles -
whenever things get too rough, he tells her gently, I just think of you,
and I feel better immediately. Same here, she admits. They share a kiss.

When Fax's coffee is ready to go, he picks it up at the register and
plops some money in the jar on the counter for the battered women's
shelter. He comments to Felicia what a good doctor Courtney was, she'd
have made a good resident [TOO good, eh, Fax? Sounds like a motive to
me...], what a loss for the hospital. The shelter fund was Morgan's idea,
Felicia mentions. Fax exits, and Felicia tells John she hopes Morgan will
be able to recover from Courtney's death. The fund is a good idea, says
John, but the biggest help for Morgan will be when they catch her killer.

Back at the hospital - After staying overnight, Donna is doing better
when Cass stops by. Fax checks her out, but says she needs to go home and
rest. No such luck, says Cass, the cops want to finish grilling her.

Donna panics when Joe arrives to take her back to headquarters. Cass
tries to get Donna to calm down, just relax and wait for Mike to get here
with your change of clothes, he tells her. He takes Joe out in the
corridor and pleads with him to finish Donna's interrogation here at the
hospital. After what she pulled evading us, Joe reminds him, Gabe isn't
inclined to cut her any slack. We need to ask her why she threatened
Blair, and what she was doing on the docks the night Courtney was killed,
he continues. Are you saying you think Donna killed them both? Cass
protests, alarmed.

Later, Mike arrives at Donna's room as Cass is exiting. Cass is
going for coffee while Donna gets ready, but Mike says he's just dropping
off her clothes, then he has a meeting at Carl's. Cass says Donna won't
be able to evade being questioned this time, but he's made the commitment
so he'll stay with her for the duration. He exits, and Mike goes in to
Donna, where Josie and Joe are waiting for her. Josie testily snaps that
Donna doesn't have time for a shower, just get dressed so we can get on
with this. Joe leaves to report back to Gabe that Josie will bring Donna
over shortly. Donna is upset that Mike can't stay, but he reminds her
that this meeting is important for Vicky's sake. Josie overhears and asks
if Vicky's coming home. Yes, Mike has to admit, it's just a short visit,
please don't tell anyone, we're keeping it a secret. Like you did with
Donna's whereabouts, Josie snipes - this is an official investigation, I'd
appreciate some cooperation from you. And I from you, Mike counters. He
exits [see below].

WELCOME HOME, VIC
Carl/Michael/Nick/Sofia/Rachel/Rafael/Vicky/Jake

Nick arrives at the Cory mansion, and Sofia lets him in. She's
excited about her first day on the job as Carl's secretary. Nick says
he's here for a secret family powwow about how to protect Vicky from Grant
when she returns to Bay City today.  Carl enters and greets Nick warmly;
Nick admits that Mike may not join them, he's disappeared.

Sofia brings in coffee for the meeting, while Carl takes a call in
the other room - I think it's Jake, she tells Nick. She's pleased at this
demonstration of family loyalty from Nick. They discuss how busy they're
about to be, how hard it is to find time to see each other. Rafael
observes this from the terrace. Carl enters, gives Sofia some papers to
file, and she exits. Observing the relationship between them, Carl notes
that Sofia seems to be a capable worker. She's the best, Nick answers.

He hopes Mike will arrive soon. Carl pours some coffee and reveals that
it was Jake on the phone, he and Vicky are flying back at this very
moment. Rachel enters in time to hear this - how wonderful, she exclaims.

Yeah, Nick answers innocently, even if it's just long enough to grab the
kids and split again. What are you planning, Carl, scowls Rachel. Mike
arrives, as Carl is telling Rachel that this meeting is about protecting
Vicky from Grant. Rachel is o.k. with keeping Vicky away from Grant's
summons, but this sounds to her like kidnapping. Carl proposes that they
let Vicky and the kids get safely out of town, then get Grant to drop his
lawsuit, and then they can discuss limited supervised visitation for him
and Kirk. Sounds like blackmail, responds Rachel. No offense, Rachel,
Mike chimes in, but this isn't even your kid. Rachel wants no part of
this, and exits. My wife believes in forgiveness, Carl explains to Nick,
but I can't bring myself to forgive Grant; you didn't know my lad Ryan,
but it's impossible to believe they were brothers. So were Cain and Abel,
Nick comments.

Nick, Carl and Mike discuss Phase I of their plan, and Mike
recommends that Vicky and the kids hide out at Jake's place, with its
high-tech security system [and low-quality background checks on nannies,
eh?]. Sofia enters with an urgent message for Carl from Cory Publishing
[anyone remember Cory Publishing???]. He reads it and immediately ends
the meeting - call me if you need anything, he tells them, as he retreats
to the library. Mike greets Sofia, and notes that Joe must have relented
about letting her date Nick. She and Nick happily confirm this, then she
exits to go back to work. Nick expresses his happiness at his life right
now, then asks where Mike's been the last few days? Mike admits that he
was helping Donna avoid the cops, she's been wanted for questioning about
Blair's and Courtney's murders, but she's been having anxiety attacks and
blackouts, there's some things that she can't explain. Nick is appalled -
hiding like that made her look guilty - what if Vicky comes home to find
her mother in jail, charged with murder? I won't let that happen, Mike
promises.

Unfinished business - Rafael is repotting plants on the terrace, when
Carl comes out with the briefcase of cash and confronts him about where he
found it. We can't let whoever stole it go unpunished, says Carl, they
might think they can get away with it, and try again. Rafael lies that,
when Blair got iced, some gang members found the money; Rafael tracked
them to their hideout, waited for his chance, then sneaked in and stole it
back. Did you count it? Carl probes. Just a quick count, says Rafael,
they'd spent some, but you got most of it back - oh, uh, by the way,
today's payday. [Lousy timing, Raf.] Carl (knowing the money is
counterfeit and now guessing that Rafael was responsible) readily peels
off 6 counterfeit bills from a stack in the briefcase to pay him, knowing
he can't exactly object. It would look suspicious to return this much
cash to the bank, Carl explains, I'll have to keep it here and spend it -
like your weekly salary, I can just pay it out of this.

Later, Rafael takes a break from his flower boxes to pull out the
phony money, which he rips up in disgust. He stuffs the scraps in his
picket when Sofia comes out with a glass of lemonade for him. He accepts
gratefully, and is happy to let her check out how his cut finger is
healing. She's oblivious, but he's clearly smitten.

Carl encounters Rachel coming downstairs with a suitcase. She tells
him she's uncomfortable - with what he's doing about Grant and Vicky, but
also with how he's patronizing her instead of being forthright, sneaking
around behind her back, trying to snow her, acting like he thinks she's
too stupid to catch on. I've been wanting to visit Amanda and Alli, I
think now would be a good time, she says. She gives him a kiss and exits.

Meanwhile, on the plane, Jake has fallen asleep on Vicky's shoulder.

Vicky wakes him up as they approach Bay City, excited about coming home
and seeing her kids. Hope everyone at home is o.k., she says: Uncle John,
Nick, Dad, Mom...

JOHNNY COCHRAN COULDN'T HELP THIS WOMAN
(Or, DONNA LOVE - HER OWN WORST ENEMY)
Cass/Donna/Josie/Gabe/Joe

Josie keeps harassing Donna to hurry her up. Donna comes up with a
dozen excuses, then begs Josie to get her a tranquilizer from the desk
nurse. Josie agrees and exits; Donna grabs her purse, checks that the
coast is clear, and walks out, but Josie is lying in wait and grabs her.

Donna claims she forgot her makeup case and runs back into the room.

Josie threatens to handcuff her if she doesn't cooperate, and is
struggling with her when Cass enters and tells her to lay off. She just
tried to escape again, Josie tattles. Cass tries to calm Donna down -
just hold it together long enough to finish being questioned, then you can
rest, everyone knows Donna Love is strong enough to get through this, he
comforts her. She's nearly in tears, terrified, and he holds her in his
arms as she weeps on his shoulder.

Josie arrives triumphantly at the station with Donna and Cass. Cass
tells Gabe they're trying to cooperate, but he doesn't want to see his
client in the hospital again like last time they grilled her. Gabe agrees
to ease up somewhat by talking with her in his office rather than in the
box. As Joe escorts Donna and Cass to Gabe's office, Josie reports to
Gabe that Donna tried to escape again, got hysterical when I started to
bring her in. She looks really guilty, observes Josie, she's definitely
hiding something - I know there's no evidence, but I feel like we've got
our killer...

Joe and Gabe question Donna, with Cass present. Gabe gets Donna to
admit she thought Courtney prevented Matt from coming back to her after
Blair died, and that she was running from the cops to avoid facing her
disastrous life and being rejected by the man she loved. Cass objects
that Donna is too distraught to answer rationally, and accuses the cops of
trying to use this defenseless woman as a scapegoat just to satisfy the
media's demands for a quick conviction. If you had any evidence against
her, you'd have arrested her, Cass declares, but you've got nothing -
party's over, we're outta here! He ushers Donna out of Gabe's office,
where Mike is waiting to find out what happened. Cass tells him it was
rough, they really went after her. As Gabe emerges, a cop asks him about
closing the books on Sharlene's hit-and-run, without the torn piece of her
coat they'll never identify the culprit. That's easily repaired, Donna
volunteers, the torn piece has smooth edges, and the coat is gabardine...

As the cops stare at her, she stops and looks back at Cass, horrified, as
she realizes she's just incriminated herself. FREEZE FRAME.

Ta, until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
