Here is the spine-tingling update for Another World for
Friday, June 23, 1995:

* Clara brings Nick and Michael to detente
* Paulina just can't leave well enough alone; neither can
Matt; neither can Eddie [Bay City epidemic?]
* Justine snows Vicky to get closer to Kirkland
* Carl and Ryan discover the sinister purpose for
Justine's disappearance

Parents and Kids
NICK/MICHAEL/CLARA/DONNA

Nick lies in his hospital bed, impatiently flipping
through TV channels with the remote. He clicks off the
set as Michael enters. Michael tells him he'll be
released tomorrow - but goes ballistic when Nick
announces his first goal is to fix up the motorcycle that
threw him. Nick accuses Mike of being more concerned for
his own guilt than for Nick's well-being. Mike insists
he's trying to be a good father and keep Nick from
getting killed. Nick argues that they didn't choose to
be related, don't like each other, and as soon as he's
released he intends to do them both a favor and split.
Clara enters and demands that the fighting stop. I'm
outa here, says Mike in disgust. He storms out, pauses
in the hallway to hold his forehead (which Donna sees as
she approaches), and exits.
Donna follows him to the hospital chapel. As they
sit and talk, she urges him to spill whatever he's been
keeping from her ever since their reunion at the stables.
He just says he regrets having had no part in raising any
of his three kids; Victoria and Nick want nothing to do
with him, it's too late to make it up to them for not
being there for them. Don't be silly, says Donna, Vicky
will come around, you and I will be a major influence for
Steven and Kirk, we have years of family happiness to
look forward to. Mike, looking like he's about to cry,
thanks Donna for her pep talk and makes a quick exit.
Back in Nick's room, Clara reads Nick the riot act
for his attitude toward his father. Nick says he can
tell he's nothing more than an obligation for Michael,
it's too late for him to start playing father to me, he
has no clue who I am or what I've been through. Clara
explodes, you have no idea what Michael's been through,
no one does [!]. She browbeats him into giving Michael a
chance to be his father while he still can [!], to give
Nick a real family to lean on, before it's too late.
Reluctantly, Nick agrees to stick it out on the farm
until his six months' probation is up. Make this work,
Clara warns, or it'll be the biggest mistake of your
life.
Michael returns to find Clara still with Nick.
We're done with our chat, says Clara, I'm leaving, my
heart can't take much more of this - and I don't mean my
high blood pressure. She exits. Michael chuckles as he
sits at Nick's bedside: Mom can be pretty rough when she
wants to be, I know from personal experience. You came
back, Nick says with some surprise. I've thought about
cutting out on you, Mike admits, you've given me plenty
of reason lately - but I won't do it, I've decided, if
you don't want to see my face anymore, you'll have to be
the one to choose to leave. I'm not leaving, Nick
informs him, no promises, but I'll serve out my probation
on the farm - when the six months are up, I'll figure out
where I go from there. Michael: "Deal?" Nick: "Deal."
Michael deals - a hand of cards [male bonding scene].

Paulina Just MUST Take Action...Matt "Helps"?
PAULINA/MATT/JOE/EDDIE

Matt drops by Paulina's to tell her something has
come up at KBAY, they need her to cut her hiatus short.
She only half-listens, still ruminating over the
necklace. Matt notes that he can see she's thinking
about Joe, starting to have feelings for him, then
apologizes for pressuring her about Joe. That's o.k.,
she answers, but my feelings for Jake and Joe are mixed
together because of the necklace. She says she intends
to clarify things by going to the antique store in
Clayton. Once she finds out how much it cost and
reimburses Joe, the necklace will signify only the love
she and Jake shared, and she can think about moving on
with her life. She's amazed that Matt seems to
understand exactly the mental conflict she's having
between loyalty to Jake and hope for the future; Matt
assures her he'd want Donna to move on if anything ever
happened to him (but admits he might be spying on her
from on high). Paulina giggles at the thought of Jake's
running commentary on her future love life. He'd want
you to be happy, Matt insists.  You're right, she agrees;
she gives him a hug and says she's off to Clayton to
resolve the necklace issue. Matt asks to stay and use
the phone. She says sure, leaves him the keys to lock up
when he's done, and exits (apparently without telling him
yes or no on coming back to work).
MEANWHILE...Joe meets Eddie for lunch at the Harbor
Club [remember how everyone used to meet at Tops? or
Ada's place, whatever that was called? The H. C. seems
kinda pricey for casual eats, and Sassy's isn't exactly a
family environment...], but asks if they can take a rain
check. Eddie nearly causes a scene in his delight when
Joe announces he intends to spill his true feelings to
Paulina today. Eddie immediately starts planning the
wedding, and Joe has only limited success in getting him
to hold off - he's not so sure how Paulina will react to
his declaration of love. He exits, leaving Eddie still
beaming with pride and joy.
When Joe arrives at Paulina's for his big
confession, he meets Matt on his way out. She'll be
right back, says Matt, here's the keys, make yourself at
home while you wait for her. He shoves Joe into the
house and shuts the door, then walks away looking very
pleased with himself [see below]. Joe, nervous, decides
to pass the time by cooking - he'll reveal his secret to
her over a nice dinner. The doorbell rings; Joe answers,
expecting Paulina [to ring her own doorbell?], but
instead Eddie bursts in with homemade treats to celebrate
the happy couple. She's not even home yet, Joe moans, I
decided to cook while I wait, it must be genetic. Eddie
is pleased at the pot-luck menu, but appalled that
there's no red roasted peppers. He insists Joe grab his
jacket so they can dash home to get some peppers to
insure the success of the evening, shoving him out the
door. Moments later they return, with Eddie insisting
Joe leave a note for Paulina (Tell her, hope you're
hungry, get ready for the time of your life, he
suggests.)
     Paulina, however, has arrived at the antique store;
the owner recognizes the necklace and remembers Joe
buying it. As he looks up the price, Paulina comments
how Jake had seen it four months ago, lucky it was still
here three months later when Joe came back. No, says the
owner, it wasn't here four months ago, it came in just a
few days before Joe bought it; he'd said "What kind of a
necklace would a guy risk his life to buy for the woman
he loved?" Then Jake was never here, mumbles Paulina
[how does she figure that?], and Joe lied [true].
Shaken, she rushes out.

Granny Wars
JUSTINE/VICKY/DONNA/MATT

Justine, posing as Rachel, visits Vicky - ostensibly
to see Steven (Rachel's grandchild), but she keeps
worming her way closer to Kirkland. Clueless Vicky
indulges her, bewildered but pleased at her change in
attitude. This isn't like you, Vicky observes with
amusement. As she lets notRachel hold Kirk, the phone
rings. Maybe it's Daddy, Vicky tells the boys. Grant?
asks notRachel, perking up. No, Ryan, Vicky replies
firmly, he's the only Daddy my kids need. As Vicky
answers the phone [they don't say who it is, but it's
probably Donna confirming lunch plans], Justine whispers
to Kirk, Grant is your father, don't ever forget it, you
belong together.
Later, as notRachel sits with Kirk on her lap, Vicky
shocks her when she casually mentions that her sudden
disappearance caused Ryan to put out an APB on her -
Vicky figured they were afraid some unsavory character
from Carl's past might have returned to threaten his
family. That makes sense, notRachel decides (seeing that
Vicky doesn't know her true identity). She asks to spend
more time with Vicky and the boys, they'll all be one
family once Vicky and Ryan are married. She seems
unprepared when Vicky laughs at how Jamie would react to
that statement. I'd love to babysit, keep me on your
list, notRachel urges. Donna enters, surprised to see
Rachel here. NotRachel thanks Vicky for the visit, hands
Kirk back to her, and ignores Donna as she exits quickly
[see below]. Donna sniffs at the blatant snub, and rags
on Vicky for cozying up to Grandma Rachel while being
nasty to Grandpa Michael. Can it, says Vicky, Bridget
will watch the boys while you and I go out for a nice,
relaxing lunch with no talk of you-know-who.
Donna and Vicky arrive for lunch at the Harbor Club,
still arguing over Michael. Vicky feels like Michael is
cozying up to prodigal son Nick at the expense of the
rest of the family, he hasn't even called once since the
engagement party, he doesn't deserve to have us in his
life. Donna refuses to let her trash Michael; after
finding him "crying in the chapel" [you should excuse the
expression], she's sure something's wrong, he's obviously
in pain. She's indignant when Vicky says she should
concentrate more on her wedding to Matt and less on Mr.
Unreliable, maybe she could get her life in order. How
dare you, exclaims Donna. In the middle of this, Matt
arrives at the Harbor Club; when he hears his name
mentioned, he conceals himself in time to hear Vicky
suggest that Donna's falling for Michael's act all over
again - or are you falling for Michael himself?

Closing In On Justine? (w/ Still No Sign of Rachel)
CARL/RYAN/JUSTINE

Carl returns to the mansion carrying a package, to
find Ryan waiting for him. After they embrace, Carl
thanks Ryan for the package, then Ryan tells him Justine
still isn't home yet after her mysterious trip, but she's
due back shortly. Carl reports with dismay that no one
in Montreal knew anything about the passengers from
Rachel's plane that night, everyone involved had
disappeared! Ryan encourages him to keep hoping for the
best - thanks to Spence, they now know Justine had an
accomplice named Christopher or some such, who could be
holding Rachel hostage. He tells an amazed Carl that
Spence has regained his powers of speech, and revealed it
was Justine who fed him the decongestants that nearly
killed him. Carl is more distraught than ever - we have
no clue who or where this Christopher is, and Rachel may
already be dead - maybe even since the night she
disappeared! Ryan says he's sure Rachel is still alive -
she's Justine's only bargaining chip if she's discovered.
But, he adds, while Spence was half-sedated, he heard
Justine vow to destroy Rachel and take over her life. Do
you think Justine went to see Rachel? Carl wonders. No,
says Ryan, she went AS Rachel - my contacts say she
checked into a New York clinic under Rachel's name. What
is this creature up to, Carl wails, I can't play this
charade any longer. You have to, says Ryan, keeping
Justine in the dark is our only hope of getting Rachel
back. [Maybe they can find her cellular phone and trace
the calls?] The front door opens and closes - and
Justine enters, playing Rachel.
She greets Carl and asks about his trip. Carl grits
his teeth and snaps into character, voicing his concern
about her mysterious disappearance. Anything serious?
prods Ryan. She senses that they're both looking at her
funny and asks warily (yet innocently), what's wrong,
should I be afraid? Nothing's wrong, says Carl, good
news - look. He unwraps the parcel to reveal the
"stolen" Degas. I tracked this down with Ryan's help,
says Carl; now, where did you rush off to without so much
as a word? I didn't want to worry you, she says, I went
to a plastic surgeon in New York to have a mole removed -
the biopsy was negative, everything's fine. She pulls
him into a long, slow kiss. As her hands slide up his
shoulders, Ryan observes with alarm a gauze bandage taped
to each wrist. [He should have mentioned it, to see what
she'd say.] The kiss ends, and notRachel says she's
going up to take a bath, inviting Carl to come up and
visit [!].
As soon as she's gone, Carl grabs a handkerchief and
frantically wipes off his mouth, then pours a snifter of
brandy to wash away the taste of her. There was no mole,
he whispers urgently to Ryan, you saw her bandages, she
had her wrist scars removed - the last trace of evidence
that she's a phony. Now Justine is Rachel's exact
double, says Ryan. How can I go on living in the same
house, begs Carl - sharing a bed, without wanting to
smother her with a pillow! Please, God, he adds with a
terrified glance toward heaven, where's Rachel? FREEZE
FRAME.

Yours as ever,

Vicky (vkorosei@midas.sinclair.edu)
