Here is the update for Another World for Friday, June 16,
1995 - the engagement party had a lot of comings and
goings, so I hope it's not too confusing as I try to
trace the threads:

* Justine's party falls apart
* Donna and Matt party privately
* Vicky tries to unravel Ryan's secret
* Fun in the pool, or, three's a crowd?
* Joe calls it quits

Outside the Front Door
VICKY/RYAN/JUSTINE

As Vicky watches curiously, notRachel demands that
Ryan explain Carl's abrupt disappearance. Vicky guesses
it's about Cory business; notRachel tries to cover up her
surprise to learn that Vicky is a major Cory stockholder.
While trying to keep Vicky quiet, Ryan says Carl is out
to contact some of his shady former associates [true],
because the mansion's security system has been breached
again [also true]. Ryan tells them Carl had just
discovered a small Degas painting had been stolen from
the library [cover story], and Carl went to see if he
could buy it back on the black market, leaving Ryan to
investigate the staff and making him promise to look
after "Rachel." Vicky thinks it's fishy that Ryan has to
move into the mansion to do so, but "if he's staying, so
am I."

Meanwhile, Back at the Party...
CANDY/ALLI/AMANDA/DONNA/MATT/JOE/PAULINA

Candy catches Alli trying to swipe another tray of
hors d'oeuvres; foiled, Alli asks Amanda if she can go
swimming. Fine, as long as there's an adult present, she
tells her. As Allie exits [see below], Amanda apologizes
to Donna for "Rachel's" sudden strange behavior toward
her, and they agree something weird is going on.
Meanwhile, Matt and Joe are in a huddle. Matt
assures Joe he'll back up Joe's story about Paulina's
necklace "from Jake," while Joe still maintains it's the
truth. Paulina interrupts them to thank Joe again for
finding and buying the necklace, and to thank Matt for
coming around to Jake's side. No problem, says Matt,
people had doubts about me and Donna, too. He excuses
himself to check on Donna, who tells him it may not be
good manners, but she'd like to leave. With all these
weird vibes, she says, maybe we should just elope and be
done with it. They soon slip away unnoticed [see below].
Later, Amanda reports to Joe and Paulina that she's
located Alli at the pool with Maggie and Tom'as, but
everyone else seems to have disappeared. They laugh
about the strange way the party has fallen apart,
agreeing it doesn't really matter.

The Private Party
MATT/DONNA

Matt and Donna have retreated home to bed, making
love and feeding each other Chinese food. Matt again
apologizes for the strange party, commenting on the un-
Rachel-like menu. Donna is particularly disturbed by
Rachel's serving scallops, despite Matt's deadly allergy
to them. Matt laughs it off, but Donna remarks that no
good mother would have dreamed of doing such a thing.
Matt reassures her he's fine, nothing's going to happen
to him, they're going to be together for the rest of
their lives. Later, as they loll in bed, Matt realizes
they haven't opened their fortune cookies. Donna doesn't
want to tempt fate by reading her fortune, but Matt
teases her about "messages planted by aliens" until she
laughingly agrees. "It doesn't matter how old you are,
it matters how much you love," she reads. This is your
handwriting, she accuses. Wow, those aliens are getting
pretty clever, he kids. She then reads the fortune in
the other cookie: "You are about to make love." Seems
like they're both winners, observes Matt. They laugh and
kiss and cuddle, and talk about how happy they are and
how happy their future together will be.

Fun in the Pool
MAGGIE/TOM'AS/ALLI, JOE/PAULINA

Things start to heat up between Maggie and Tom'as
during their moonlight swim in the Cory pool. Maggie
tells him she wants them to make love, right now. Alli,
wearing snorkel and flippers, interrupts them; she feels
awkward at being around while they're kissing, and skins
her knee trying to leave. Tom'as assures her she's
welcome, he and Maggie can kiss later, and he gets her to
stay and splash around with them in the pool.
Eventually, they make Alli close her eyes so they can
kiss again; then she tells them she wants to be an
underwater archeologist and hunt for buried treasure.
She drags them to the pool house to show them a bracelet
she found once on a beach in Florida.
While they're in the pool house, Joe and Paulina
arrive at the deserted pool at the end of their "tour" of
the mansion. Joe confides that the last time he was in a
mansion this size (on security duty), he'd realized he'd
never have this kind of wealth, and that he had no desire
for the lifestyle that went with it, he liked the simple
life he has now. Paulina thanks him for dragging her out
of her isolation and reconnecting her with her family.
The party seems to be over, she says, and she asks him to
take her home. They exit [see below].
Later, after Alli's left, Maggie and Tom'as have
changed back into their party clothes. Maggie is
obviously miffed at Alli's interruption. Tom'as assures
her they'll be together when the time is right, but
Maggie's afraid there's no such time. She grudgingly
admits she admired the way he made Alli feel important,
and suggests (with some resignation) that he bring Luisa
over to swim tomorrow. Can't, he says, John got me an
interview to be an orderly at the hospital - it could be
a step toward the kind of life I want for the three of
us. Everything's going to work out, she says sincerely,
I have complete faith in you.

Where'd Everybody Go?
VICKY/RYAN/JUSTINE/CANDY/JOE/PAULINA

NotRachel, Ryan and Vicky return to the living room
to find Candy alone, munching hors d'oeuvres. She tells
them no one knew where Rachel had gone, apparently they
all had things to do, places to go, people to see - so
they all split. NotRachel is miffed at first, but
realizes she's to blame for neglecting the guests.
Despite her assurances she'll be fine here alone (with
Amanda, Alli, the servants - Candy?!?), Ryan insists
he'll just take Vicky home (over her protests) and be
right back [see below].
After they exit, Justine drops the phony voice and
lays into Candy for stealing the Degas. Joe and Paulina,
on their way out, enter with alarm from the terrace and
ask is everything all right? Nearly caught, Justine
covers quickly: Carl had to leave suddenly, she says, but
I'll be fine. Paulina offers to stay if she wants, but
notRachel says it's o.k., you've done enough by helping
Grant see his son [?!]. She apologizes for the strange
evening and her absenteeism; but they assure her
everything was beautiful and the guests of honor (Matt
and Donna) had a good time [especially after they left,
eh?]. They exit [see below].

End of the Line (or Is It?)
JOE/PAULINA

Joe drops Paulina at her front door, and she thanks
him for seeing her through the evening. She invites him
in, but he declines - then, he tells her she's back on
her feet now, doesn't need a P.I. anymore, it's time he
moved on. She's a little floored, tells him she doesn't
want to hurt Eddie's feelings by deserting him, but Joe
says he'll smooth things over with his dad. You'll have
a great life, he tells her, I wish you only the best, you
deserve it. You, too, she says; she goes inside and
closes the door. He stands outside for a moment, sighing
sadly, then leaves. Inside, looking a little lost,
Paulina settles on the couch in the dark and turns on a
late movie on TV, taking a few seconds to gaze at the
door where she just left Joe. She falls asleep in front
of the TV, and dreams she's pouring two glasses of wine.
Honey, the wine's ready, she calls; a man comes
downstairs, but it turns out to be Joe. Where did you
come from, she asks with astonishment as he smiles down
at her. She awakes with a start, looks around for Joe
and realizes she was dreaming. She clicks off the TV and
sits in confusion.

Vicky Discovers a Plot
VICKY/RYAN

Back at Vicky's house, while she's in the other
room, Ryan calls Carl to tell him the "art theft" plan is
going fine, Justine's miffed but she's agreed. Just find
Rachel and bring her home, he says. When he hears Vicky
enter, he pretends he's checking in with Billy [why? he's
not the captain anymore!] and hangs up. She again begs
to come along, but he insists she stay home with her
sons. As she helps him pack his duffel bag, she finds
the missing Degas. What's going on, she demands, and she
refuses to let him leave without an explanation. He
comes up with a lame story about how Carl was called away
suddenly, he didn't want Rachel left alone but knew she
wouldn't ask for help, so they cooked up the theft as an
excuse for Ryan to stay in the mansion. Vicky says
that's a crock - if Rachel is upset after the last break-
in, why try to "protect" her by inventing another break-
in? Ryan finally has to admit he's hiding something, but
begs her just to trust him, she's more precious to him
than he can say. Why are you talking like you're never
going to see me again? she asks uneasily. Ryan assures
her he'll just miss her, that's all; but despite her
pleading, he can't tell her any more. You already know
too much, he says, promise you won't tell anyone, NO ONE,
about the painting. You're scaring me, she says. Good,
he answers, this is serious, promise me. She agrees,
then guesses it's about Carl. He still refuses to
provide any more info, but asks for one more promise:
don't leave the house until I tell you it's o.k., no
matter how long it takes. Fine, I promise, she says
reluctantly - but her fingers are crossed behind her
back. He kisses her goodbye, says I love you, and exits
with his overnight bag. I love you, she says after he's
gone. Her brow furrows as she considers her next move.

Candy on the Grill, Part II
JUSTINE/CANDY

After Joe and Paulina leave, Justine returns
immediately to grilling Candy. She swears she's
innocent, but wonders if it might not be that French TV
producer (Christophe) who's been skulking around.
Justine rakes her over the coals for letting him in
without her permission, and threatens that she could be
arrested as an accessory. Do as I say, and I'll make
sure you stay out of prison, Justine promises: first, not
a word about this to "Captain Harrison" [she pronounces
the name with a sneer]; now, go make up the room next to
the service entrance for him. Candy starts to protest,
no one ever uses that room - but one glare from Justine,
and she fearfully agrees. She exits, and Justine pulls
out her private phone, flips it open, and dials.
Christophe answers the phone from Rachel's bedside
in Switzerland. Justine accuses him of swiping the
Degas from her library while he was in town. "Your"
library?? he asks her pointedly; but he assures her he
wouldn't have taken that kind of risk in the middle of
their plan, maybe it was Candy. No, she says, they knew
what they were after; now "Carl's son" is standing guard
over me and the household. He's your son, too, Chris
reminds her.  We mean nothing to each other, she snarls;
how's the woman? No problem, says Chris, I convinced the
doctor to keep her sedated, I'd suggest we keep her here
indefinitely. At whose expense, asks Justine, no, we
have to get rid of her. Chris protests, and Justine
accuses him of turning against her. Don't worry, I'm
still on your side, he tells her, just waiting for your
go-ahead. No time like the present, she says.
Just then, Maggie bounces in. NotRachel says she's
on the phone with a friend from New York. Loretta?
Maggie guesses, let me talk to her. Yes, it's Loretta,
notRachel lies, but we're in the middle of something.
Fine, tell her I said hi, I'm going to bed, says Maggie,
bouncing out. Returning to her call, Chris suggests they
cut their losses, switch back, and get out while they
still can. I have no intention of getting out, says
Justine, I just want to eliminate all incriminating
evidence - including Rachel...that's right, kill her -
quickly. She snaps the phone shut, as Chris looks back
grimly over his shoulder at the sedated Rachel. FREEZE
FRAME.

As ever,

Vicky (vkorosei@midas.sinclair.edu)
