Here is the update for Another World for Friday, May 23, 1997 - full of
surprises (for the characters, at least):

* Grant and Cindy exchange "insurance," then Grant dreams of power
* Josie throws a surprise party for Gary's new business
* Amanda stumbles across Vicky and Bobby on the lam
* Jake makes a deal with Morris

DREAM ON

THE VIPER'S NEST (a.k.a., Grant's pad) - The honeymooners return,
sniping at each other about their exciting "mishaps," when each had had
nearly fatal "freak accidents" under suspicious circumstances. Grant
announces he doesn't intend to have any more "accidents" - smugly handing
Cindy a legal document. It's a codicil to his will, ordering that if
anything REMOTELY suspicious happens to him, the terms of the will change
and Cindy gets nothing. Cindy responds with a document of her own: a copy
of a blow-by-blow description of her involvement in Grant's plot to kill
Vicky and Bobby. If anything happens to me, the police will get a kick
out of the original, which is in a safe place, Cindy gloats. With their
respective "insurance policies" on the table, they decide to tear each
other's clothes off and amuse themselves making - er, lust, I guess, on
the sofa. When they finally come up for air, she tells him to stay put and
rest, she'll unpack. She wraps herself in the blanket, gives him a kiss
and says "sweet dreams," then exits to the bedroom.
Grant has this elaborate rose-colored dream: He and wife Cindy and
son Kirk are returning to the apartment after a successful campaign; John
bursts in and warmly congratulates him on his landslide victory, then
thanks him profusely for donating a new hospital wing [maybe THAT's where
Morgan got lost?]. Sharlene follows; she embraces Grant, says she always
believed in him, then gives him a huge kiss and pinches his butt - I
should never have let you go, she purrs seductively. Felicia comes next,
gushing over Cindy's designer suit, then begs her to be on the board of
the youth center - she's such a role model as a young mother, raising
Kirk! He just needed some structure and stability - FOR A CHANGE, she
digs, as she and Felicia cackle at Vicky's expense. Kirk asks, Do I have
to call you "Mayor Daddy" now? Yes! crows Grant, as everyone roars with
laughter.
Cindy passes by the couch and sees Grant smiling in his sleep - must
be some dream, she observes.
His rosy scenario continues: The room is filled with balloons, and
everyone is singing "For he's a jolly good fellow..." Then the visitors
parade out, and Kirk starts to follow. Grant: "Where are you going?"
Kirk: "Home." G: "This IS your home." K: "No, it isn't, this is just a
dream." He exits, closing the door behind him. No, it isn't a dream,
Grant cries.
It isn't a dream, son, he mumbles over and over in his sleep. Cindy
sees his turmoil and wakes him up, you were having a nightmare. He eyes
her slinky gown with irritation and orders her to get rid of it. She
protests - but he says it belongs in a bordello - you need to dress in
classic, tailored suits and act the part if we're to establish our
reputation as members of high society, and so you can appear to be a
worthy stepmother for Kirk. We can run this town, with the right image,
he claims - think Jack and Jackie! She scoffs, but he insists, if they
work at it, they can have it all. He gloats over the newspaper account
about Bobby being an escapee from death row - Vicky's playing right into
our hands, he chuckles.

PARTY PLANS

CARLINOS - The keys to Gary's new office [doesn't he know, B.C. cops
can't become successful P.I.s unless they partner with Frankie?] are
burning a hole in his pocket; he doesn't want to wait for Josie to get off
work, he wants to go check it out now. Josie says fine, she just wants
him to be happy, but she asks him to stick around while she talks to
Paulina. She takes Paulina aside and says she's planning a surprise,
don't tell Gary. She outlines her plan; Paulina says she'll stall Gary
with a piece of cheesecake. They exchange high fives, and Josie scurries
out, greeting John and Felicia on their way in [see below].

TOWN SQUARE - Chris catches Jake about to enter police headquarters,
and orders him to go home and recuperate from his surgery, but Jake's too
worried Vicky will get caught in the dragnet for Bobby. Chris suggests
they report her missing, but Jake doesn't want to tip off Morris, he just
wants to see how close they are to catching the guy. Chris offers to help
Jake find Vicky before Morris does, if she's with Bobby she could do hard
time for aiding and abetting. Jake says he's heading back over to Vicky's
house; Me too, says Morris, who's overheard Jake's last comment as he
emerges from the station house. Morris is suspicious that she doesn't
answer her phone, and doubts Jake's story that Vicky was going to bed
early. She'd better wake up, sneers Morris, I have more questions for
her. Toni bursts out and tells Morris they're about nab Bobby, he's very
close. Morris bolts back into the station house (with Jake & Chris at his
heels) and gets Joe to loan him his office to make a phone call. [see
below]
STATION HOUSE - Joe congratulates Toni, showing her an article in the
paper saluting her as Rookie of the Month for releasing Joe and helping
nail the corrupt Commish. Toni suspects Chris of writing the glowing
story. At first he denies it, but then admits it when she threatens to
ask Jake. He invites her for pizza at Carlinos, and she seems agreeable.
Josie enters, gets everyone's attention, and announces she's throwing
Gary a party at Carlinos to launch him in his new P.I. business, you'd all
better be there. Chris wonders if Gary will appreciate the surprise, but
Josie is sure he'll love it [see below].

FUGITIVES

CARL'S ISLAND BUNGALOW - Vicky and Bobby are going at it hot and
heavy on the couch, talking about wanting to build a life together. As
they stretch out in a passionate embrace, Vicky looks up and spots a
shocked Amanda standing in the doorway. She stammers that she was looking
for Carl (neglecting to mention she expected to catch Carl cheating on
Rachel) - but this is a better story. She tries to make a phone call, but
Bobby pulls out the phone cord so she can't alert the authorities. She
bluffs that her pilot has orders to call the cops if she doesn't contact
him. Vicky and Bobby scurry around the grounds, eluding Amanda, He tries
to figure out how to get off the island, he can no longer wait for Carl's
boat. Vicky finds the keys to a motorboat they saw at the dock. He says
he's heading for the mainland, then the airport, then parts unknown. She
doesn't want to let him go. They embrace, then Amanda catches up to them.
Vicky whispers to Bobby to get the boat; he exits, then Vicky tries to
convince Amanda that Bobby had kidnapped her and forced her to help him.
Amanda doesn't buy it, but Vicky manages to catch her off guard and shove
her in a cabana and lock the door. Amanda pounds on the door and demands
to be released; Bobby returns, and Vicky explains she had to keep Amanda
from calling the cops before they could escape. Bobby wants Vicky to stay
behind, but she refuses. We'll make it work somehow, he finally agrees.
They flee, mischievously leaving Amanda behind, pounding and shouting.
Amanda realizes they've gone, and pulls out her cell phone. She calls
Jake (he's still at the station house), reporting she's on Carl's island
near Key West, Bobby and Vicky are making a break. Disregarding that
Amanda is locked in, Jake tells her he intends to cut Vicky off at the
airport, and hangs up on her. Morris stops Jake on his way to the door,
says he overheard the whole thing - give up Shane's location, or I'll slap
Vicky in jail for abetting a fugitive. Jake relents - I'll lead you to
Bobby, if you promise to keep Vicky out of it. [see below]

SURPRISES

CARLINOS - John and Felicia take a table, happily discussing their
wedding plans. Michael and Sharlene enter and spot the couple lip-to-lip.
Mike suggests they go elsewhere, but Sharlene says she's used to it by
now. They take a seat at the counter. Gary returns (from the bathroom,
maybe?) and spots Felicia with John. He grabs a nearby chair and informs
his sponsor that he quit the force and he's starting his own P.I. agency,
all he needs now are clients (missing persons or missing goldfish, I'll
take anything, he half-jokes). Felicia and John share a look and agree to
tell Gary THEIR news, their wedding date is set for July 14. Paulina
overhears as she approaches with the menu - and so do Mike and Sharlene
from the counter. Felicia expresses some regret that Josie and Gary
didn't beat them to the altar. Gary claims their wedding will be soon,
the pressure's off since they're no longer working together and bringing
office tensions home. Mike worries that Sharlene is upset by Felicia and
John's news. She admits it was a shock, but no big surprise, it will be a
relief to close that door and get on with her life.
John approaches Paulina and asks how her diet is coming along. She
says she's sticking to it, but she's frustrated she hasn't lost an ounce
yet, she wants to be thin for their wedding. It's a life change, he
counsels her, hang in there, I guarantee in six weeks you'll have more
energy and more control of your body, regardless of pounds. [What does he
know, he's a man.] She smiles politely, unconvinced.
Sharlene excuses herself from Mike, and goes over to congratulate
John and Felicia on their news. John apologizes for the way she'd found
out, he'd intended to tell her in person. She says she's fine with it,
but advises him to have a talk with Gregory [who's apparently off at
military school with Charlie] before he finds out through the grapevine.
I have plans with Mike tonight, she says, better wait until tomorrow to
stop by. He agrees, and she returns to the counter.
Gary impatiently tells Paulina to tell Josie he couldn't wait any
longer, he's too eager to check out his new office. Paulina insists he
can't leave - she needs his help on an urgent case. Case of what,
sparkling water? he jokes. She claims she had a big fancy chocolate cake,
now it's missing, she last saw it in the kitchen. They often hang out
there, he tells her with a straight face - it may sound crazy but I'm just
going to check. He exits to the kitchen; Paulina stays behind,
frantically waving her arms around. Gary spots a large box on the counter
in the deserted [where's the chef? the food? the activity? Is this any
way to run a restaurant?] kitchen. He takes a spatula and carefully tips
over the lid and finds - a chocolate cake. This was too easy, he mutters
cluelessly - you're coming with me, buddy. He lifts it out of the box and
carries it out to Paulina, chiding her for not seeing it in such an
obvious place. As he enters, the roomful of former colleagues joins Josie
in cheering him on his new venture. He grins with pleasure, totally
surprised [no wonder he's off the force], and gives Josie a thank-you
kiss.
Meanwhile, Amanda (still locked in the island cabana) has called the
local police, but they're taking too long, so she gets impatient and calls
Paulina, let me speak to Joe. He's appeared for Gary's party, and Paulina
hands him the phone. Josie listens to Joe's end, as Amanda tells him
Bobby and Vicky just left Carl's island, heading for the airport - and get
me out of here, the local cops probably thought I was kidding. As Joe
gets her location, Josie at his elbow, Paulina smiles sheepishly at Gary,
who looks distressed that once again Josie has let a case distract her,
leaving him out.
Later, Amanda is jiggling at the lock with a credit card, when a cop
opens the door, startling them both. She demands to be taken to the
airport immediately and stalks off. The cop follows.

The party crowd showers Gary with gag gifts in honor of his becoming
a P.I. - a Sherlock Holmes hat, pipe, and magnifying glass; a shoe with a
wad of gum stuck to the sole (gumshoe, get it?); and a framed photo of
Bogart as Sam Spade. Sharlene raises a toast to the success of her future
son-in-law - and while you're looking for clues, maybe you could look for
a wedding date? Speaking of weddings, she adds, here's to John and
Felicia's impending nuptials. Mike observes that it was a generous thing
for her to do, and offers to take her home later. She agrees.
Josie thanks Paulina for helping throw this party together, it's
great - and so is this cake, have a bite. I'm on a diet, Paulina replies
uncomfortably. Josie stammers an apology and slinks away, as Paulina's
mood darkens again.
Joe, who's been back and forth to the station all day, returns
talking on his cell phone. He finishes the call, then tells Josie that
Jake and Morris are heading for Florida on a tip. Catching Bobby would be
bad news for Vicky, notes Josie, but good news for Grant, which would
drive Gary nuts - er, where is Gary, anyway?

Gary has ducked out and sneaked over to his new office, still
sporting Holmes hat and pipe. He sets the Bogart picture on his desk,
slipping a photo of Josie over top of it. He tries the phone and gets a
dial tone. Then he sits back, waiting for clients to start calling.

MANHUNT

Jake and Morris take plane to Florida, sitting in adjoining seats.
Jake again demands Morris' word that Vicky will go free if Shane is
caught. By the way, he asks, what if Shane is innocent? I don't care,
says Morris (a la Tommy Lee Jones in "The Fugitive"), my job is to bring
him in. But what if, Jake continues, Shane has evidence of someone else's
guilt, but he's sitting on it to protect someone? If there's new
evidence, says Morris skeptically, it had better surface fast - Shane was
days away from execution when he escaped, and when he's recaptured, he'll
be executed withing a week.

Vicky and Bobby arrive at the airport. She says she's scared to
death for him; he wishes they were back safe at her house, snuggling by
the fire. The pilot enters, draping his coat and hat over a chair by the
counter. Vicky signals Bobby to keep quiet, then she approaches the
pilot, bares a shoulder and starts chatting him up, as Bobby eyes the
pilot suit.
Later, she pretends to be on the phone, waiting for Bobby to emerge
from the men's room wearing the pilot's hat and coat [what's an extra
theft charge, to a guy on death row, eh?]. They find a quiet corner for a
goodbye embrace, and he promises to send for her when he finds a place
they can live in peace. He notices she still wears his ring around her
neck. She sits and digs through her purse for something to give him to
remember her by - all she can come up with is a chocolate bar, but it
brings back memories of their times together. They hold each other,
neither wanting to let go. She sees the passengers boarding, and sends
Bobby to join them. After a final embrace, kiss, and I love yous, he
disappears through the gate. She wipes away her tears and turns - running
smack into a grim-faced Jake [how'd he get here so fast - did Scotty beam
him down?].
Bobby takes a seat by the window. He pulls out the candy bar and
muses over it, then replaces it in his coat pocket. As he gazes out the
window, a man sits in the adjoining seat. Long time no see, Roberts, he
says. Bobby looks up and sees Morris sitting beside him. FADE TO BLACK.
