John regretfully informs Rachel that he's found a
tumor on the wall of her uterus. As a horrified Carl
and his wife reel from the news, John explains that
they will have to terminate the pregnancy to remove
the growth before it endangers Rachel's life. As
Shane returns to Vicky's house, Jake leaves a
message on the machine warning his old friend that
"Bobby" is a killer on the run. Emily and Tomas
enjoy a romantic dinner for two at the apartment.
The fun fizzles, however, when Tomas receives word
that his scholarship application missed the deadline
by one day. Wary of being named as an accomplice,
Vicky asks Shane to leave before Detective Morris
comes back. Though a weeping Carl begs Rachel to
think of herself first, she vows to protect her
unborn child's life no matter what the consequences
may be. Emily gives her escort a pep talk, assuring
Tomas he'll find a way to stay in med school despite
his dire financial straits. Jake shows up on Vicky's
doorstep and urges her to cut all ties to Shane
Roberts before she and her boys find themselves once
again in the path of danger. When Rachel presses him
to discuss all their options, John admits there is a
slight chance she and her unborn son could both
survive an early C-section. Terrified of losing her
mother, Amanda shares a rare moment of tenderness
with Carl. Vicky secretly trails Shane to St.
Claire's as he heads back to visit with Lila.

Greed is good. Nothing great was ever accomplished by a strong desire to be
on welfare.
