local news bulletin/press conference...

* Courtney honored in memorial service at hospital chapel

NICK SCORES POINTS
Sofia/Tony/Jake/Chris/Matt/Nick

Restaurant - Sofia remarks to Tony how slow business is - ever since
the Herald's recent stories about killings in the area, people are afraid
to come out. She notices he has a stack of bills, and insists on taking a
peek at the books. She's shocked to find the entry for $50,000 they owe
in back taxes on the building, which Jake had "generously" glommed off on
Joe.

Meanwhile, Jake and Chris are at the office confabbing on coverage of
the apparent crime spree. Jake assigns Chris to cover Courtney's memorial
service at the hospital chapel. Chris warns him, Matt will be there so
they won't be able to get away with any sensationalism. Matt's been
useless since the bimbo [Blair] died, Jake snorts. Matt enters and
overhears the insult - he's about to rake Jake over the coals, when Sofia
storms in and lays into Jake from the other side. Jake assumes it's
because of the racy photo of her on the front page a few days ago, but she
proceeds to ream him out for conning Joe into taking the debt-ridden
building. Nick, entering, overhears this - is this true? he demands.

Sofia suggests Jake did it out of jealousy and spite over Paulina. Jake,
tired of the abuse, reveals the nasty truth: Mr. Upstanding Joe won the
building in a poker game which he crashed, risking the family's restaurant
for a chance at some easy money - and speaking of Upstanding, what about
you posing in your birthday suit?! Nick explodes, That wasn't her fault!

Jake agrees, it probably wasn't - see, I'm giving you the benefit of the
doubt, which is something NO ONE ever gave me! Nick escorts Sofia out in
the hallway, and swears he knew nothing about the debt on the building.

But you work for the sleaze, she snarls accusingly, nearly in tears. Nick
storms back in and chews out Jake, It was stupid and petty to screw over
good people like the Carlinos, and you'll pay for it one way or another.

Sofia has hung around to eavesdrop, and smiles at Nick's gutsy defense of
her.

Later, Nick tracks Sofia down at the restaurant, peering in the back
door. She motions him to enter, confiding that Jake's headlines have
scared away all their customers, except for pizza delivery. Nick produces
a big present from outside the door, it's a pair of boxing gloves in honor
of her set-to with Jake. He again apologizes for Jake's innuendos and
dirty tricks, he only wishes he had the money to do more for their
situation than just chewing out his boss. Sofia admits she'd heard Nick
go to bat for her family against Jake, despite his feelings about Joe, and
it's enough that he's sacrificed his bike and risked his job to help her
out. She touches his cheek, to his amazement.

RACHEL PUTS HER FOOT DOWN
Carl/Rachel/Grant/Lucy/Steven/Kirkland/Jake

Grant hangs up from squealing to Rachel about Carl, and gazes at
Kirk's picture - it won't be long now, son, he tells it, cautiously
hopeful.

Carl bounds cheerily in from the terrace talking about flowers, but
Rachel greets him with stony silence. When he notices and stops babbling,
she tells him Grant just called her - is it true you've been keeping him
from seeing Kirkland, she demands. Carl thinks Jake has the right
attitude about keeping Grant out of Kirk's life in accordance with Vicky's
wishes, but Rachel thinks he's nuts to trust Jake with the welfare of
small children, particularly their grandson, and she intends to take
charge and arrange for Grant to visit with Kirk. I'd like your support,
she says - I won't ask again. Carl looks at her, but doesn't answer. She
turns icily and strides out, as he sips his drink.

Later, Jake arrives at his suite to greet Steven, Kirk, and "Anna"

(Lucy) - and finds Rachel holding court. She sends Lucy and the kids out
of the room, and tells Jake that she's arranged for Grant to come over and
visit Kirk, he'll be right over. Jake says no way, he's carrying out
Vicky's wishes; but Rachel reminds him he has no real rights here [thought
he had Vicky's power-of-attorney...], and denying Grant visitation could
lose Vicky custody. Cooperate, or I'll ship the kids back to the mansion
with me, she warns. Carl arrives and urges Jake to go along - trust me on
this. He confirms with Rachel that's she's arranged a visit from Grant,
and reminds her it's time to leave for Courtney's memorial service, Rafael
is waiting. Jake still objects to Grant's visit; keep an eye on him, Carl
advises, I'm counting on you. So am I, Rachel echoes. They exit, leaving
Jake wondering what hit him. The kids drag Lucy back in, and Steven shows
Jake a postcard he just got from Vicky - mailed from London, Jake notes.

She'll be home soon, he assures them. Grant arrives, Lucy answers the
door and gasps, as Jake puts a protective arm around Kirk. I'm here to
see my son, Grant announces.
Lucy pretends to try to keep Grant out, but he sidesteps her and
enters. Kirk runs to his arms, but Steven shoots him with a squirt gun,
to Jake's glee. [Gun-boy, missing the irony, is not amused.] Jake sends
Lucy to take the boys out for a walk, maybe something to eat, and they
exit. Rachel promised me a visit, Grant whines. You just had it, Jake
smirks. Grant insists he has every right to be with his son, why
shouldn't he? Oh, let's see, muses Jake, you're a lying, two-timing,
brother-murdering jailbird, and Vicky doesn't want you near him. When is
your cohort coming home, Grant jabs. How do you know she's coming home,
Jake wonders suspiciously. She'd better come home soon if she wants to
retain custody, Grant covers quickly. No judge would give you custody,
Jake retorts. And you thought I'd never get out of jail, either, Grant
snipes back - no one can keep me from my son: not Vicky, not Carl, and
certainly not you. He stalks out.

Turns out that Lucy takes the kids to Carlino's [when you work for
Grant, apparently a recent crime spree doesn't seem so scary...]. Sofia
greets them, and takes the kids back to the kitchen to see the boxing
gloves [see above]. As Lucy waits at the counter, Grant enters. He joins
her and congratulates her on her performance in fooling Jake. She urges
him to leave so the kids won't see them together, but he says he has to
find a way to see his son. Suddenly Jake enters and sees them
tete-a-tete. What the hell's going on here, he demands.

CASE CLOSED - NOT!!!
Josie/Gary/Tibbs/Gabe/Morgan/Lorna

Josie, in uniform but using a cane, hobbles into Carlino's and meets
Tibbs on the way in. Gary emerges carrying a dishtub, surprised to see
her. She gives him a gift in honor of his new job, a pin in the shape of
a fork.

Meanwhile, at the station house, Gabe isn't satisfied that Courtney's
death was an accident. He's posted a list of recent crime victims, along
with possible suspects, and doodles Blair's and Courtney's names on a
legal tablet with lines drawn to speculate on a possible connection -
Murderer? Who? He hides the tablet when Morgan stops by on his way to
the memorial service to demand action on solving Courtney's murder. Lorna
tenderly comforts him, reminding him what a beautiful couple they were,
how much his love and caring had meant to Courtney after her history with
Andrew. Hold on to the love, not the anger, she urges him, and she tells
him to go to the memorial service and be strong for Courtney's friends and
colleagues, she'd want it that way. Gabe promises not to give up until
the killer is caught. Morgan exits, John is waiting outside to take him
to the chapel. Gabe is touched by this compassionate side of Lorna he's
just witnessed. I couldn't always do that, she tells him, but I've
changed lately, and it's all because of you, because I love you so much.

I hurt you, I almost lost you, don't ever leave me, he says. He gives her
a kiss on the forehead, and she heads out for the memorial service,
running into Josie in the doorway. Josie hobbles in, glad to be back at
work but frustrated at being confined to desk duty. Gabe asks her to join
the other officers at the memorial service, as a symbol that the
department is still on the case. He tells her that the old guy who
attacked her in the hospital has been eliminated as a suspect in Blair's
shooting; also, a recent witness statement suggests that Courtney's death
was no accident. Could there be a connection? No evidence of that so
far, and Gabe advises Josie to save her conclusions until they see where
the evidence takes them. They agree that Jake's paper is doing real
damage with its half-baked speculation. Josie leaves for the service, as
Gabe pulls out the legal pad and stares at the names he's scrawled.

"LET ME COUNT THE WAYS..."
John/Tom'as/Cass/Frankie/Morgan/Rita/Gary/Josie/Gannon/Matt/Donna/Fax/G
abe/
Lorna/Chris/Rachel/Carl

Memorial Service (hospital chapel) - John arrives, sees Tom'as enter
and consoles him. Cass and Frankie console Morgan, and Cass offers to
speak on Morgan's behalf if he doesn't feel up to it. Morgan says he's
o.k.  Rita offers Morgan her support.  Gary shows up just before Josie;

as they greet, Gannon enters and teases Gary about his restaurant job, but
Josie reassures him that it doesn't bother her, and he'll be reinstated
soon. He wants to sit with her, but she says she has to sit the the other
cops. Gannon offers her a seat next to him, but she snorts at him and
finds another seat. Matt enters solemnly; Donna follows and begs him to
talk with her, but he growls that this isn't the time, bug off.

Distraught, she retreats to the back in tears, fantasizing that she and
Matt were alone in the chapel, she begged him to forgive her but he
rejected her, then disappeared, leaving her alone. She starts babbling
his name over and over, until Fax arrives at the service and notices her
distress, offering to help.

Carl, Rachel and Rafael arrive, also Gabe and Lorna; when everyone is
there, John delivers a eulogy, praising Courtney's skill as a doctor, her
compassion with patients, and how much her friends and colleagues will
miss her. Morgan goes up next, with Cass's encouragement. He reads a
poem which had been a favorite of her grandparents, Elizabeth Barrett
Browning's "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." As he reads, his
voice choked with grief, we see various people in the congregation quoting
parts of the familiar poem with him, quietly from their seats. Gabe
recites a line or two along with him, gazing at Lorna tenderly. Then Carl
recites a few lines referring to Rachel. Donna recites the line about
lost love. Morgan finishes the verse, "...I shall but love thee better
after death." He promises Courtney that he'll never stop lovine her or
looking for her killer. The camera pans over Matt, Carl, and Rachel.

Lorna goes up and attests to Courtney's honesty, compassion, and
friendship. The minister thanks everyone for coming and concludes the
service. Lorna offers Morgan words of comfort, then Gabe comforts Lorna.

Matt assigns Chris to get busy on writing the story - don't sensationalize
it, no matter what Jake says. Chris sees Rita and tries to ask her a
question. Rita turns and tracks down Lorna to help her handle "the
press." Back to work, Gabe and Lorna sigh. As Lorna walks off, Gabe
approaches Matt. I need to speak to you in an official capacity, says
Gabe. You want to make a statement for the Herald? Matt asks skeptically.

No, I need a statement from you for the record, back at the station, Gabe
answers. Rachel wonders if that's necessary, but it's Donna who really
comes unglued. She pushes her way through the crowd, yelling No, you
can't! As everyone watches in amazement, she steps between Matt and Gabe,
pleading hysterically: He didn't do it, don't take him, please don't take
him, not Matthew, you can't take Matthew! FREEZE FRAME.
