Gary Gets Visitors
GARY/STAN/JEFFREY

Gary is home in his messy apartment, pumping iron,
when there's a knock at the door. It's Stan, the
bartender at Sassy's [thought cops' addresses were
unlisted?], with a bottle of "the good stuff" to thank
him for saving his life, his job, and "that girl Josie"
from the would-be robber. You really shouldn't have,
winces Gary, but thanks him and he leaves. As he gazes
at the bottle, there's another knock at the door. This
time it's a young (maybe 10 or 12? I'm lousy about ages)
kid named Jeffrey, the son of his former partner, Grace,
in Indianapolis. Apparently she was shot and killed in
the line of duty, and Gary was there. As he's putting
the bottle out of sight, he learns that Jeff left his dad
at home and just took off to see Gary. Dad doesn't care
about me or anything else anymore, he says, I want to
live with you. No way, says Gary, this place is a dump,
your mom would kill me if I let you stay here. She
thought you were the greatest partner in the world, says
Jeff, you were like family to us... But I'm not your
dad, says Gary, I know he's worried sick about you, your
mom would have both of our hides for this. He spends all
his time brooding in their room, whines Jeff. You both
miss her, says Gary, you need each other to fill in the
empty places and keep your home and family together,
Grace would have wanted it that way. Jeff asks to use
the phone to call his dad. You bet, says Gary, giving
him a hug. Jeff has a nice talk with his dad, tells him
he's coming back. Gary gets on the line and tells Randy
he's putting Jeff on the next plane. After the call,
Jeff grimaces that his dad wants to take him bowling.
Should be fun, says Gary, just go easy on him, you're a
real jock, your mom was proud of you. Then he tells a
story of how one time on patrol they were about to pull
over a little old lady for going 2 mph over the speed
limit, when Grace realized she'd be late for Jeff's
soccer game, so they put on the lights and sirens and she
got there in time. You and your dad were her priorities,
he finishes. Who's your partner now, Jeff asks bluntly.
Uneasily, Gary answers that I'm not on the streets here,
I'm teaching cadets, it'll take time before I'm ready for
a new partner. They head for the airport.
Later Gary returns home, and remembers Jeff's words
about being the best partner his mom ever had. He
agonizes as he flashes back in his mind to the sound of
the gunshot that killed her. He grabs for the bottle,
uncaps it, and takes a swig to drown out the echoes in
his mind, sinking to the floor and sobbing.

The Press Conference
AMANDA/MARSHALL/GRANT/LORNA/REPORTERS/HILDA

Amanda and Marshall are at Cory, preparing for the
press conference with Grant. They snidely comment on how
Grant will take advantage of the spotlight to worm his
way back into the public eye, and how he's dragging his
feet on signing the contract. Grant arrives with Lorna,
all chipper and raring to go. Got the contract? asks
Marshall. Oops, says Grant smugly, must have forgotten
it. Marshall faces him down: if you think you're gonna
jerk me around like you did Dana, he says firmly, you
picked the wrong guy. Grant orders Lorna to call Allen
Bell (his lawyer) about the contract. As long as we're
dealing in good faith, says Marshall, let's go ahead with
the press conference. Amanda opens the door to the group
of reporters. She starts by announcing Marshall's
promotion to Editor of Brava. He reveals their plans to
harken back to the days of Dickens and Alcott by
serializing a book in their magazine - they've picked a
modern true-life soap opera, with intrigue, love and
betrayal, the toppling of a powerful man - yes, it's
Grant Harrison's memoir, and here's Grant as a full
participant - any questions? Yep, lots:

Q: Do you plan to be honest with the public? (Grant
squirms.)
A: (Marshall) You know I wouldn't tolerate a whitewash.
Q: Any comment on the rumors of your divorce? (Grant is
still hesitant.)
A: (Amanda) Yes, it's true. (Grant chips in, hitting his
stride:) But obviously it's amicable - she's also my
editor, doing a great job.
Q: What about Lorna Devon, any plans to marry? (!!)
(Lorna looks humiliated.)
A: (Grant) Please, let's give the woman some privacy, she
doesn't deserve any more notoriety; she's still my
advisor, if we have anything to announce, we'll let you
know. (Cheez.)
Q: How sweet a deal did you make?
A: (Grant - to Marshall's dismay) It's not final, the
lawyers are still working out the details - but we're
sure not giving it away! (Marshall has some tricks of
his own, adding:) Thanks to Grant's legislation,
criminals can no longer profit from their crimes... (I
was never tried, let alone convicted, of any crime, Grant
seethes.) ...nevertheless, Marshall almost smirks, we'll
let you know as soon as we decide what charity will get
all the profits from Grant's book. [Ho-ho-ho!!!] (Grant
glares at him.)
Hilda arrives in the doorway, and motions for Amanda
to speak with her out in the hall. No, nothing's wrong
with Alli, Hilda reassures her, I came to say goodbye,
I'm leaving Bay City to care for my sister. Amanda is
stunned, then kicks herself for forgetting that Hilda's
sister has MS, sorry I haven't asked about her lately -
we'll really miss you, it won't seem like home without
you. You've had enough on your mind, says Hilda, and I'd
never have asked for time off at a time like this, but
Rachel insisted I take all the time I need; she's a
wonderful woman to put her servant's needs above her own.
She adds, I'm only sorry I saddled you with good-for-
nothing Candy, the worst mistake I ever made, I got her
the interview and now you're stuck with her! She says
she had time earlier and said goodbye to Alli, she'll
probably be gone for quite a while but she'll really miss
everyone. They embrace, and Hilda exits, leaving Amanda
distressed at the sudden upheaval. She reenters the
room, where Grant is holding forth in typical Grant
style. She whispers to Marshall that he can take it from
here, watching Grant's performance is making her skin
crawl, she has to get out of here. She exits [see
below], as Marshall hears Grant saying his book will be
"the whole truth and nothing but."
At the end, Grant ushers the reporters out the door.
Marshall closes the door and says, We're in private now,
you can cut the crap. I don't appreciate your tone,
Grant says indignantly. Listen and listen good, says
Marshall fiercely, we had a deal, you and your lawyers
shook on it, and if you think the deal isn't final you're
dead wrong - or else you're a welsher, and this business
doesn't take kindly to welshers. He goes on, You need us
more than we need you, your book is a pile of crap
without Amanda anyway, and one phone call to the other
publishers and I can promise you certain oblivion in your
resurrection attempt - so shape up! Well, Grant says
with slight bitterness, I won't make much profit since
you announced all my proceeds go to charity; Lorna just
called my lawyer, and - hey, where the hell is Lorna??
Make your own phone calls, says Marshall sharply, handing
him the phone.

Will the Real Rachel Cory Please Stand Up?
JUSTINE (aka notRachel)/RYAN/AMANDA

At the Cory mansion, Ryan is telling notRachel that
he thinks the intruder may have had inside help.
NotRachel protests, it couldn't have been one of our
faithful servants, this is scary, just drop the case,
will you? Seeing Ryan's surprise, she adds that yes, she
wants the guy caught; but she's talked with the staff,
even Candy, and they're all upset about the break-in and
assault, they weren't involved. Ryan says he intends to
quiz them again in more depth, maybe I'll see something
you missed, most people don't lie very well. (She gives
him a funny look.) She nearly smirks when he suggests it
could be an old enemy of Carl's who thinks he's too happy
nowadays. Ryan wants to start by talking to Hilda, who
had just let him in the door a few minutes ago. Sorry,
says notRachel, she was on her way out, she's left town
to care for a sick relative. Yeah, right, says Ryan,
that's the oldest excuse in the book, sounds pretty fishy
to me. You caught me, says notRachel (without much of a
fight), I was covering for Hilda, the break-in was her
fault! Ryan is dubious. You wouldn't understand, says
notRachel, you're a man. I'm told I'm pretty sensitive -
for a man, says Ryan, just tell me what happened.
NotRachel spins a yarn about how Hilda was lonely, she
got involved with a man who used her to get the Cory
security codes; when he broke in, Hilda realized she'd
been a fool, end of story. Amanda arrives home, and Ryan
asks her about this mysterious boyfriend of Hilda's.
Hilda doesn't have a boyfriend, Amanda replies, confused.
Surprise, says Ryan, Rachel just told me Hilda was
tricked into giving her boyfriend the security code, he
was the one who broke in. Amanda describes how Hilda
just came to say goodbye to her at Cory, in distress over
her sister, and had said that Rachel insisted she go; I
can't see Hilda as a thug's moll, she adds. Saying
goodbye was part of her cover story, says notRachel
[excuse me?], she was too humiliated to admit her part in
this mess. Ryan wants to track down Hilda to get a line
on the boyfriend. Please do, urges Amanda. Absolutely
not, insists notRachel, you can't get the boyfriend
without dragging in Hilda, and she's been hurt enough;
we're recovering nicely, the boyfriend is long gone, just
drop the case. Ryan [Mr. "Can't Ever Leave Well Enough
Alone"] reluctantly but inexplicably agrees, case closed
- but Amanda still looks disturbed over the whole thing.

Just Visiting
JOHN/SPENCER/NURSE JOAN/RYAN

John stops by Spence's room to check on him before
he heads home to his wedding. He sympathizes with
Spence's frustration at not being able to communicate,
and encourages him to try again. Spence again tries to
burble out "Justine," but John can't understand him.
Just what? he asks. Nurse Joan enters - that's his
favorite word, she tells John, but he probably thinks
he's saying something else. You're in good hands, John
tells Spence, she'll keep you hopping so you won't give
up. He reminds Joan that he's off-duty tonight, call if
Spence needs me. Hope it won't be necessary, she says,
have a great wedding. She exits. John tells Spence
you're doing much better, you can start therapy soon, and
you're tough and stubborn enough to make a full recovery.
BUT, he cautions, one word of serious advice: NO more
decongestants - with your high blood pressure, what we
found in your bloodstream the night of your stroke was
enough to kill you, and you might not be so lucky next
time. Spence flashes back to his visit with Justine that
night, and his face twists in terror to realize she had
deliberately given him decongestants and told him it was
aspirin. What's wrong? John asks with alarm. He
promises Spence things will improve, and gives him
something that should help: it's a metal slate with
magnetic letters, he can practice and learn to move the
letters and spell out messages. Eagerly, Spence tries to
move his erratic arm and nearly immobile hand toward the
slate, his finger aiming toward the "J."
Ryan stops by after coming from the Corys. John
explains about the letter board; it's hard for Spence,
but I think he wants to tell us something and he won't
give up. I'm confident of his recovery, he adds. Good
luck at the wedding, says Ryan, Vicky and I will be there
shortly. You guys are next, smiles John, and he exits.
Ryan sits by Spence as he struggles with the letters.
Keep trying, says Ryan, I miss hearing you chew me out.
He kisses him goodbye and exits. Spence takes another
jab at the letters, knocking the board off the bed. He
wails in frustration.

Ultimatum
LORNA/GRANT

Lorna arrives back at Grant's suite, upset after the
press grilling. A delivery man arrives with a box of dry
cleaning, my boss says he couldn't get all the smoke out.
Puzzled, Amanda signs for the deliver and opens the box
curiously. It's full of Alli's dolls and stuffed
animals. Of course, snorts Lorna, the fire; looks like
Grant's using both of us to suck up to Amanda, she sneers
to the teddy bear on top. Shortly after, Grant returns
home and finds the teddy bear on the floor where Lorna
threw it. Then he sees the box with the rest of the
toys. He calls Rachel to say he's had Alli's toys
cleaned and repaired, I'd drop them off myself but
Amanda's already upset after the press conference, could
you send someone over to pick them up? How sweet and
considerate of you, coos notRachel, you've gone to so
much trouble, the least I can do is drop by myself, see
you shortly. Grant hangs up, surprised. What a guy,
sneers Lorna, entering from the back room where she's
overheard this call. Where'd you go, says Grant, I felt
like a fool - why the scowl? You really don't know? asks
Lorna. No; I'm sorry I asked you to make that phone
call, but I was under stress, I still depend on you.
Sure, until you get Amanda back, she snarls; what a
stroke of genius, sucking up to her by cleaning up Alli's
toys. What's wrong with that? wonders Grant. At the
press conference, she snarls, you made me sound like your
private whore, I felt like an idiot, now I know where I
stand with you and I don't like it! Furious, she hurls
the box of toys across the room. Grant is still at a
loss, but apologizes if he hurt her. You're so damned
insensitive, snaps Lorna; or do you save your sensitive
side for your ex-wife - no, wait the divorce isn't final
yet, is it, and you're hoping it never will be. Please,
says Grant, what can I do to make you happy again? Hmmm,
muses Lorna, well, you could make me respectable again -
put your money where your mouth is, Grant - marry me.
Grant is stunned.

Just a Small Favor...
JUSTINE/AMANDA/CHRISTOPHE/RACHEL

NotRachel thanks Amanda for backing her up with
Ryan, pursuing poor Hilda would do no one any good. It's
a mystery, Amanda replies coolly, but maybe we can put
this behind us now and get back to normal. She gives
notRachel a peck on the cheek and exits the room. Alone,
Justine steals out to the terrace, pulls out her portable
phone, and calls Christophe in Europe - C'est moi, la
comtesse, she says, how is Rachel? Poor woman, answers
Chris, hasn't seen any of Switzerland, she's still
sedated - how are you doing there? Do me a small favor,
Justine coos, could you make sure Rachel never wakes up?
FREEZE FRAME.

As ever,

Vicky (vkorosei@midas.sinclair.edu)
