The Harbor Club - Where the Action Is
JOE/RACHEL/PAULINA/AMANDA/MATT/GRANT

Amanda keeps trying to call Evan to find out why he
is so late, but his line is still busy. She tells
Paulina she's about to have the operator break in on the
line. Finally she gets it to ring on Evan's end [see
below], but she's miffed to get neither Evan nor his
machine. How rude, she comments to Paulina.
Joe and Rachel arrive for lunch at the Harbor Club,
so he can give her his report on the investigation of
Jake's death. Joe notices Paulina sitting with Amanda
(who is still waiting for Evan), strongly urges Rachel
that they should go somewhere else. Rachel notices he's
looking at Paulina, and guesses his report is bad news
about Jake, he wants to leave so he can avoid her. Too
late - Amanda sees Rachel, and she and Paulina swoop over
to join them. I'm so sorry about the bad news, Rachel
tells Paulina. What bad news, asks a puzzled Paulina.
As Amanda makes a pit stop, Joe explains he hasn't had a
chance to fill Rachel in yet. The report was good,
Paulina explains, Joe found a gas station attendant,
etc., etc. I see, says Rachel. Paulina is hurt by the
skepticism in her voice, so Rachel backs down and says
I'm so happy Joe told you the "truth," embracing her.
Joe's given me peace of mind, Paulina says happily. Matt
arrives and apologizes to Paulina for doubting Joe's
report.
While Joe and Rachel repair to the bar to talk, Matt
takes Paulina aside and talks her into starting over and
being friends again. A waiter comes over and gives
Paulina a letter that was delivered for Amanda. Paulina
takes it back to the table to wait for her, and Matt
joins Rach and Joe at the bar. I thought you and Joe
thought Jake was running out on Paulina, Rach persists.
I was wrong, says Joe. I don't buy it, says Rach. Joe
just stares straight ahead. Still dubious, she makes out
a check for Joe's services. No fee, he says without
explanation; just cover my expenses, you can pay me
double next time. [Maybe he'd have better luck tracking
Justine, or Evan's whereabouts?]
Meanwhile, Amanda has returned to the table and
Paulina gives her the letter. It's from Evan; the gist
is that he loves Amanda, but her family is out to destroy
him, it could be dangerous for both of them, so he's
doing her a favor and leaving town. Mom's behind this,
Amanda guesses. She scurries over to the bar - what did
you do to Evan, she demands of Rachel. Haven't talked to
him in days, Rach protests. I don't believe you, read
this, says Amanda. Rach skims Evan's letter - he's so
paranoid, she snorts, I'm not sorry he's gone, but it
wasn't my doing. Yeah, right, says Amanda, limping away
in a snit. She bumps into Grant who's just entered
[after visiting Spence - see below]. Are you o.k.? he
asks. Peachy, she snaps, brushing past him. Then he
encounters Rach - anything I should know about? he asks.
Probably, she says sarcastically, Evan just left town
without an explanation, know anything about it? News to
me, says Grant, but Evan's a weasel. He's paranoid and
manipulative, just like you, she says. Then maybe you
should thank me, he retorts. You're worse than he is,
she answers - and BTW your book deal's a crock, hope it
fails. She turns on her heel and walks back to rejoin
Joe. Let's reschedule, she says. Good idea, he says,
seeing Grant and Paulina talking easily together.
Grant tells Paulina he's just had run-ins with
Amanda and Rach. Well, Paulina teases, Matt's in the
restroom, if you want to make it three in a row. He
thanks her for helping him get to visit with Kirk, it's
his only bright spot, what with Spence's condition, etc.
He offers to take her to dinner soon as a thank-you; she
says she'll think about it, then they head for the bar to
sit and chat.
Joe's seen enough, and heads for the exit, but he
runs into Matt. Matt apologizes for questioning his
methods and results, thanks for telling Paulina what she
needed to hear. If I'd been right, he adds, your proof
would have killed her, the important thing is my sister's
happiness. Between the lines, it sounds like Matt knows
Joe faked his report, but he's happy to play along for
Paulina's sake. No problem, says Joe; he takes one more
morose glance at Paulina laughing with Grant, and exits.

Where's Evan?
CHRISTOPHE/AMANDA

Christophe warily arrives at Evan's apartment,
afraid that Justime may have done something rash. He
finds no trace of Evan or Justine. He sees the phone
receiver dangling on its cord, wipes off any finger
prints, and replaces it on the hook. What has she done,
he asks out loud. As he starts to leave, the phone rings
(Amanda). He's startled, but he lets it ring and exits.
Some time later, Amanda has gotten Evan's apartment
manager to let her in and look around to see if he's
really gone. Sure enough, he'd packed the bare
necessities and split. He paid his rent and said he'd
contact me later about where to send his things, the guy
tells her. No forwarding address, Amanda says with
concern, he must have been in big trouble.

The Reunion
DONNA/MICHAEL

Donna, in her cute little riding togs, is surprised
to see Michael enter the stables. Hi, Blackie, he says
[blast from the past]. You must be the new stable boy,
she manages to say as she gets over her shock. And you
must be the rich girl who lives in the big house up on
the hill, he answers. They talk, she quizzes him on why
he suddenly dropped out of sight, phone disconnected,
etc. Mike is vague, I've been moving around a lot, then
I decided to move back here and help look after Mom. So
that's why my invitation was sent back, says Donna.
Obviously just a courtesy invite, I'm sure you didn't
really expect me to attend your little party, says Mike,
but now that I'm here, I accept. You might want to
reconsider, cautions Donna, it's my engagement party, I'm
getting married. I'm happy for you, Mike manages to
stammer, do I know him? Yes you do, Donna says, easing
into the big news, he's an amazing *young* man...
Younger than you? Mike asks with some amusement.
Everyone's younger than us, Donna observes; then she
finally blurts out, It's Matthew Cory. Mike erupts in
hysterical laughter at the coincidence, two guys with the
same name. No, Donna sets him straight, there's only
one, Rachel's son, and I'm going to marry him. Little
Matthew? are you nuts? Mike shouts incredulously. You
should talk, retorts Donna, what about your little cab
driver bimbette? I just slept with her, I didn't marry
her, protests Mike, you oughta try it, "Mrs. Robinson."
Donna tries to slap him, but he grabs her wrist. You
haven't changed a bit, he accuses. She calms down: yes,
I've changed, she answers, because you can't get to me
anymore. He sees she's serious, but he can't resist
another disbelieving "Matthew Cory?!?!?" With that
attitude, I'm glad you didn't get the invitation, says
Donna, you think my life is a joke. Your life is...none
of my business, Mike admits, I'm glad you're happy,
please let me come to your party - will Victoria be
there? She's throwing it, says Donna; she's in Bermuda
recuperating with the kids, you have no clue what she's
been through lately, she really needed you and it hurt
her that you didn't seem to care. I've been in a period
of transition, answers Mike. You can't just be a father
when it's convenient, she answers, please see her before
the party - but I'd better come along, she's really
steamed at you. Maybe it'll help if I tell her it won't
happen again, says Mike - I'm back in Bay City for good.
Stunned but covering nicely, Donna says Vicky will
probably get over her grudge eventually - she's stubborn
like us, they agree. There's been a lot going on in my
life, he hints, I'm glad to be home. But your mother
plans to sell it, she remarks. Not to worry, he replies,
I'm buying it - from business mogul to farm mogul. He
invites her back to the house for something to eat, which
reminds them of the old days; long gone, they agree.
Donna says no thanks, she's meeting Matt. Mike stifles
another crack, then says he'll never mention it again, he
was just caught off guard. The surprise was seeing you,
she admits. As she leaves, we see her mouth a silent
"Oh, my God..." Mike watches her go; "Take care," he
whispers a little sadly.
Later, as he putters around the stable, he flashes
back to the last time he saw Donna, when they agreed
they'd grown apart, ended their marriage, and he walked
out of her life.
Meanwhile Donna returns home to find Matt waiting.
She's delighted at his news that he's reconciled with
Paulina. Now, he queries, what have you been up to that
made you late? She takes a sip of water and considers
her answer.

Insanity Among Us
JUSTINE/SPENCE/GRANT/NURSE LOUISE/CHRIS

Justine, disguised as Rachel, stands over the
paralyzed Spence in his hospital bed. She holds a pillow
over his nose and mouth, taunting him about his inability
to fight back or cry for help. You silenced me for 30
years, she snarls, now it's my turn. Spence gurgles
helplessly.
Grant approaches Spence's room and tries to enter,
but snarky Nurse Louise stands in the doorway and gives
him a hard time. He tries bullying her, saying John said
it was o.k. to visit briefly and Spence is mentally
alert, so get out of my way. He gets nowhere until he
gets emotional about how much he owes his father, no
one's gonna stand in my way. Five minutes, she agrees.
As Justine torments Spence, he mentally cries out
that she's a lunatic, and for Grant to come to his
rescue, your mother is here, she's trying to kill me. As
Grant starts to enter, Justine ducks into the bathroom to
hide and listen. Grant replaces the breathing tube that
Justine removed from Spence's nostrils. He notes
Spence's agitation. Spence manages to gurgle "mother,"
but Grant thinks he is delusional and asking for his own
mother. Grandmother died before I was born, he explains
as if to a child; you've had a stroke, but you're going
to be fine. Spence struggles to communicate, as Justine
listens with glee. You'll soon recover your speech,
Grant continues, I'll get you the best therapists [isn't
that what he told Amanda?]; we'll have each other, just
like always. Justine looks more somber. Spence
continues to burble, finally making a "J" sound. Grant
thinks he wants juice, and pours him a cup of water, but
Spence is still in distress. I'll get the nurse and be
right back, Grant tries to reassure him. He exits.
Alone again, Justine reemerges and again taunts
Spence - after all the years I was in hospital thanks to
you, she says, picking up the cup of water, it's a real
kick to see the tables turned, I haven't had so much fun
since...Carl! At that, Spence flails his arm and hits
Justine's hand, sending the cup of water flying. What a
mess, we'll have to talk about your behavior later, she
snarls - a bientot, mon petit chou [trans.: "Later,
sweetie."] She exits.
Moments later, Grant returns with the nurse - see
how upset he is, he spilled his water glass, can we get
him some juice? Gurgle, gurgle, says Spence. Maybe he
wants to go home, suggests Grant. Settle down, Mr.
Harrison, says Nurse Louise, or I'll have to sedate you.
Spence immediately gets quiet. You need your rest, Grant
urges, then I can get you out of here, I'm never leaving
you again. Weeping, he kisses Spence's forehead; Spence
still looks distressed [for some unknown reason...!].

Justine has apparently had Scotty beam her instantly
to the hotel, where Chris is waiting. What did you do to
Evan, he demands. Nothing, I was at the hospital
visiting the old fool, she replies. I was just at
Evan's, says Chris, and he's vanished without a trace.
Ha! says Justine with delight, I brought him to his
knees, I'm really getting good at this Rachel act - it's
a big step toward our future. I see my future - with a
chain gang, predicts Chris, only half-kidding. Rachel's
life is really extraordinary, everyone knows and respects
her, it could be quite useful for us, she remarks - Grant
will soon have his Amanda back. I doubt Amanda will
agree to that, Chris cautions, be careful. I'm sick of
being so careful, she blasts, I'm going to do something
practical to take control of my life again. Chris is
alarmed - You're sounding like you did just before the
Count's "accident." Justine glares spookily - I'm taking
charge, getting rid of my son's enemies as well as my own
- or would you rather be in the slammer, and me in a
padded cell? If you don't go along, she continues, you
can be replaced. No I can't, he corrects her, neither of
us can ever replace the other, I'm with you always.
Justine comments on her productive day, then goes to take
a pampering bath. Chris takes the opportunity to make an
overseas call to a Dr. Dansonville or something - I'm
concerned about the comtesse...no, they're getting
worse...yes, you must do something soon, very soon...

Reality Check
SPENCE

Spence suddenly finds he can speak and walk; he gets
out of bed and urgently tells Grant that Justine's alive,
she's back and she's trying to kill me - but Grant just
stands in stony silence. Spence turns and sees himself
in the bed, two nurses are pulling the sheet over his
face - one of the nurses turns around, and it's Justine,
smiling wickedly. He wails with the realization that he
must be dead, no one can see or hear him. He suddenly
awakens to find it was just a nightmare - but the real
nightmare is that he still lies helpless in bed,
paralyzed, whimpering in terror, unable to speak. FREEZE
FRAME.
