Here is the (somewhat baffling) update for Another World for Friday, April
11, 1997 - just when is this kinder, gentler, more uplifting AW supposed
to kick in, anyway??

* Nick and Sofia dance in the attic, as Mike and Sharlene go to dinner
* Josie guards Grant the Un-dead
* Vicky's trip to Texas yields more questions than answers; Bobby visits
mystery woman
* Paulina confronts Joe about his lies; Jake urges her to stand by her man
at induction ceremony

NIGHT OF THE UN-DEAD

Watts/Sinclair apartment - Gary objects strongly to going to Joe's
induction ceremony while Josie is left alone guarding Grant the Maniac,
who is cuffed to the bedpost. As they argue, there's a knock at the door.
It's Sharlene, who yells out for Josie to answer. Grant starts babbling
that he'd never hurt Sharlene, and Gary has to clap a hand over his mouth
to shut him up. He finally ties a gag around Grant's face, closes the
bedroom door, and goes to stall Sharlene with Josie. Sharlene explains
that Mike is parking the car, they're going out to dinner. Josie and Gary
are so busy trying to keep her out, she has to point out that she's
standing there without a cane! Josie gasps in delight; Sharlene retrieves
her cane from beside the doorway, but reports that she doesn't need it all
the time anymore. She invites herself in as they express how proud they
are of her, which was the reaction she came for. She invites them to
dinner with her and Mike, but they beg off because of Joe's induction.
Josie wonders if she's maybe here for some other reason? Sharlene admits
she's upset over Grant's suicide, wondering if she could have reached out
to him more and prevented it. She insists there was a kind, loving side
to Grant that no one would acknowledge. Mike enters in time to hear her
comments, and explodes at how she could defend the creep that ruined his
daughter's life. If he was such a loving father, Mike raves, why didn't
he consider how Kirkland would feel when someone had to tell him his
father killed himself?? Grant, listening from the bedroom, looks
chagrined. [see below]

DOUBLE HUDSON INTERRUPTUS

Hudson farmhouse [don'tcha miss the Frame farm, Sharlene's kitchen,
etc?! John's such a weasel, he'll probably rent it for himself and
Felicia now that he's caused Sharlene to lose it...but I digress...] - As
Sofia tries to leave the attic to call Emily, she and Nick discover that
the door is stuck. Mike has just left for dinner with Sharlene, and
Sofia's afraid she'll miss Joe's induction ceremony. At least we're not
stuck in the basement, says Nick. Sofia yells out the attic window, but
no one is within earshot. They discuss how to get out, but can't come up
with a workable plan. He reminds her they came to look for furniture for
her apartment, and he offers her a nice coffee table she can fix up. She's
pleased, and then she notices an old victrola by the wall. She remembers
how her parents used to dance to records all the time. Nick says the
victrola belonged to his grandmother; they crank it up and it seems to
work, so he finds some old records they can play. They expect sedate
waltzes, but it's a '40's swing band. Suddenly Sofia wants to "cut a
rug," and she persuades Nick to join her, which he does. They jitterbug
till they drop. It's getting dark, so they turn on a couple of lamps.
After a short breather, she wants to dance some more. Nick puts on
another record, which turns out to be the old love song, "A Kiss to Build
A Dream On." She's reluctant to slow-dance with him, but he talks her
into it, and they're soon swaying to the music in each other's arms. As
the song ends, Nick tells Sofia he's dreamed of holding her like this. He
asks her if she hasn't imagined the same thing. She says fantasies are
confusing, but he says fantasies are the heart telling the mind what it
really wants - what do you really want, Sofia? She hesitates, then admits
there's one fantasy she's been having a lot lately.
Mike and Sharlene come back to the farm after dinner [for some
unknown reason], and she remarks on all the stars in the clear sky - a
"telescope night" for Gregory. It reminds Mike of John's stargazing as a
kid, and of growing up with their feisty mom. He says it taught him to
appreciate women with strength, heart, sense of humor - and, in your case,
legs that just won't quit! Form, or function? she jokes. Both, he
answers, seriously. He sits on the porch steps, and Sharlene carefully
lowers herself to the steps beside him. They look at each other, start to
draw closer as if to kiss - then they both burst out laughing.
In the attic, nose-to-nose, Nick is about to kiss Sofia when she
hears the laughter from outside. The mood broken, she goes to the window
to call out and get Mike's attention.
Mike and Sharlene, no longer laughing, again draw together for a kiss
- but before their lips meet, they hear Sofia calling for help, and they
look up toward the sound.

PIZZA "TO GO"?

As Bodyguard Josie, gun in hand, scans her mail in the living room,
Grant talks to her through the open bedroom door. He reminds her how
upset her brother Gregory was over his parents' divorce, and worries how
Kirk will take the news of his "suicide." Josie, unsympathetic, is sure
Vicky will find the right words. Grant says Sharlene was the only one who
really understood how much he and Kirk truly loved each other. Josie
hints maybe Sharlene just dated the town pariah to irritate John. Grant
thinks Josie's just trying to convince him he's lost everything; just be
glad you're not a corpse, says Josie, you still have a chance to see Kirk
again (if Joe and I can pull this off, she adds to herself). Suddenly
Josie and Grant are startled by a voice at the door - Pizza delivery, he
calls, some guy named Sinclair ordered it as a surprise. Take it back,
I'm not hungry, Josie calls back warily, wielding her gun and edging back
toward where Grant is tethered. She tells Grant it's a trick, Gary knows
she doesn't like pizza, then hurries to unlock his handcuff so she can get
him out of there.

TEXAS TWO-STEP

Town Square - Guests and dignitaries are gathering for Joe's
induction as captain. Jake and Amanda trade insults. Amanda is happy
Paulina married such a paragon as Joe, after the losers her family has
endured: she'd inflicted them with Grant, Matt had nearly stuck them with
Donna, Mom brought in Carl - and then there was Jake, courtesy of Paulina.
Neil comes over, and Amanda cozies up to him. After some small talk, Neil
exits, and Jake makes a snide remark; Amanda suddenly recalls how Jamie
had stuck them with Vicky, which finally gets Jake riled. His cell phone
rings; Amanda eavesdrops as Jake answers. It's Vicky, she's been calling
everyone in town but no one seems to answer. She's vague about her
location, but Jake informs her about Grant's suicide. Vicky's skeptical
(wonder why?!), but Jake tells her he heard from Tom'as that Spencer
identified the body. Her heart goes out to Spence; she won't tell Jake
where she is, but assures him she'll be home soon, she should be the one
to tell Kirkland. She hangs up [see below], and returns to the counter of
the restaurant, where the waitress gives her a phone message. Apparently
it's about some unsavory place where she can get more info on Bobby.
Some time later, we find Vicky waiting in a jailhouse interview room,
where a guard leads in an inmate who introduces himself as T.J. Reno. She
says she's here to talk to him about his son, Bobby, who doesn't know
she's here. Most gals want to wring his neck, T.J. observes wryly. He
looks dubious when Vicky describes how kind and generous Bobby has been to
her and her family. She admits she's been hearing some confusing things
about Bobby, that he has a reputation as a troublemaker and a womanizer;
T.J.'s laughter confirms that this sounds more like his son. She asks him
if he knows someone named Shane? Popular name around here, he observes.
Then she pulls a photo of Bobby out of her purse and shows it to him - is
this your son? she asks. T.J. says he's never seen the guy before. Vicky
realizes Bobby isn't who he said he was; she then pulls out the yearbook
photo she got from the waitress. T.J. grimly confirms it's his son, but
he refuses to answer any of Vicky's questions, what happened to Bobby, why
would this other guy take his identity? He gets so agitated that he calls
for the guard to take him back to his cell, leaving Vicky alone and
unsettled.
Meanwhile, a woman leads Bobby into a house where she's told him he
can find the person he's looking for. She makes him wait in the foyer
while she goes into an adjoining room. When she returns, she says, "You
can see her now, Shane - but remember, it's been a long time..." He
follows her into the room, and she leads him to the bedside, although we
don't see the occupant. She's more beautiful than I remembered, he says
emotionally.

COP GAMES

Joe's office - Joe confesses to Paulina that he paid for the repairs
to the restaurant with bribe money, sorry that he's disappointed her. She
retorts that she's only disappointed at his lies, she knows him better
than to believe he'd ever take a bribe, why won't he level with her? He
insists Grease Snyder paid him off to look the other way on his car theft
ring, regrets not being able to live up to her superhuman image of him -
but now he has to get ready for his induction. She admits bitterly that
she's been lying to him as well - she never wanted him to be captain! She
storms out in distress, passing Neil as she goes. Neil sees Joe, and
raises an eyebrow.
Later, Grease Snyder has magically appeared in Joe's office, where
Joe is roughing him up to get him to arrange a meeting with Mr. Big
tonight - Joe wants to see the source of his bribe money, face-to-face.
[It's probably the Commish...] Then Joe tosses Grease out of his office
(through that pesky, unguarded back door where everyone always
eavesdrops).

Town Square - Remember Vicky's phone call to Jake? After he hangs
up, Amanda asks if Vicky's returning soon; Jake bristles at her vulture
instincts, but he's surprised by her sincere assurance that she'd never
drag her former stepson Kirkland into her expose'. They see Paulina storm
through the plaza toward Carlinos, and fall all over each other trying to
be the one to comfort her. They tail her to the closed restaurant, where
they find her sulking in a booth. Amanda urges Paulina to open up to her,
but Paulina insists she came here to be alone, please leave. Jake pushes
past Amanda and sits next to Paulina in the booth. She doesn't object, so
Amanda concedes defeat and exits. Paulina confides that Joe's been lying
to her; mistrust is why she finally divorced Jake, but she thought Joe was
different. Jake reminds her how much Joe loves her and Dante, and that he
just lost his best friend and became captain in one day, she should give
him a break. Besides, he adds, I used to screw up every other day, and
you always forgave me because we loved each other; surely you could manage
the same thing for a winner like Joe (don't tell him I said so). Paulina
admits she told Joe she didn't want him to be captain - but she's also
proud of him, everyone depends on him. And who does Joe depend on? Jake
asks her rhetorically. Me, she beams through her tears, as Jake gives her
a hug.
With the cops apparently instructed not to discuss Grant's death,
Chris tries to get a quote from Toni, but she totally blows him off. He
then spots Joe arriving for the ceremony and starts to approach, but Jake
intercepts him and gets him to back off while Jake has a word with Joe
alone. Jake calls Joe aside and berates him for what he's doing to
Paulina - I gave up Paulina to you because I was convinced you could make
her happy, but now you turn out to be on the take, PLEASE take the money
from me instead and get out of this mess! Joe cryptically tells him
everything will be fixed soon, back off so you don't blow it. "Lick me,
I'm a sucker," says Jake, the light dawning - you fed me a "crooked cop"
act, and I bought it! He senses Joe's into something dangerous, and begs
him to let him get Paulina and Dante out of town until it's over. I can
protect my family without your help! Joe whispers emphatically, leaving to
rejoin the brass. Neil tells Joe it's about time to start. Joe looks
around anxiously for Paulina, not sure if she'll show up after their
fight, and he's relieved to see her arrive carrying Dante. She sends Jake
a grateful smile, then tells Joe she'll support him, even if he can't tell
her what's going on. The Commish takes the podium, welcomes everyone, and
introduces Joe. Neil tells Joe he'll look after Paulina and Dante, and
Joe heads for the podium as the others take their seats. Joe reminisces
about returning to Bay City where he grew up, and meeting and marrying
Paulina. He then credits his career success to his predecessors: Ryan
Harrison, who inspired him to return to police work; and Gabe McNamara, a
role model and good friend. He then makes a big deal of announcing the
McNamara murder case is closed, Grant's suicide note confessed to killing
both Ryan and Gabe. The Commish congratulates him, then removes Joe's
badge and replaces it with a captain's shield. As everyone applauds, the
Commish whispers to Joe, If you need anything, you can come to me. In the
confusion afterwards, Grease sidles up to Joe and says the meeting is set,
be in the alley in 5 minutes. He exits.
A short time after, we see Neil telling Paulina that Joe asked him to
drive her and Dante home. She reluctantly agrees, but excuses herself to
get the car seat from the restaurant first. After she exits, Neil makes a
call on his cell phone. I've got them, he reports.
Joe arrives at the alley to find - not Mr. Big, but Dante's silver
cup sitting on the ground in the middle of the alley, with a mini tape
player stuck in it. He picks up the objects and listens to the tape.
"Don't make your family pay for your mistakes, Joe," warns the altered
voice. Joe looks around, worried. FADE TO BLACK.

Hope some of this starts to make sense soon.
