Here's the doings in Bay City for 4/16/96.....

MICHAEL/NICK

At the hospital, Nick corners his father and says he'd like to join the
same
Businessmen's Associatin that Michael is in; not only that, but the
first

thing Nick will do once he's in is attempt to get Jake named as
Businessman
of the Year. Michael is skeptical, to say the least. Jake eavesdrops

nearby..

PAULINA AND ENTOURAGE

A beaming Paulina is wheeled into the hospital with her new baby in her
arms.
Trailing after her are Joe, Rachel, Felicia, Sharlene and Tomas. Jake
catches
sight of the procession and stands there looking alone and lost.
Michael and
Sharlene meet up in the hallway and talk about how bizarre it was for
Sharlene
and Felicia to be stuck delivering a baby together, especially since
Paulina
went into labor right after Sharlene tore into Felicia about Gregory.
Joe is
happy as a clam passing out cigars to everyone, including passerby on
the

street. Nick and Sophia snatch a moment to be together; Sophia says
she knows
just the place where they can go to celebrate...

MORGAN/COURTNEY/JOHN/RITA/MICHAEL

Morgan and Courtney share angry words over a story in the Herald about
Kelly
Nichols, victim of the Bayside Park rapist. Without using her name,
Morgan
gave Chris Madison all the details about the rape so he could write the
story.
Courtney demands to know how Morgan could violate doctor-patient

confidentiality like that, and he replies that the more information
everyone
has, the quicker the rapist can be caught. Courtney is unimpressed and
stalks
off. John comes walking into the hospital, and Rita demands to know
what he
thinks he is doing there, it's too soon for him to be back at work.
John says
he's just there to catch up on some paperwork. Morgan is supportive of
John
coming back to work sooner. Rita says it's futile to argue, and beats
a hasty
retreat. Later, Michael comes by to pick up John's medication, and
John is
there to intercept it himself. Michael expresses concern that John is
pushing
himself too hard.

NICK/SOPHIA/MAGGIE/TOMAS

Nick and Sophia go up to the hospital roof. Sophia is thrilled at
becoming an
aunt. Nick tells her that he's moving on up in the world: Jake is
making him
assistant editor, contingent upon Nick's doing one small favor for him.
Sophia
is wary at first, but Nick assures her that it's legal. Nick tells
Sophia that
he wants to become more responsible, and Sophia tells him not to move
so fast,
they have their whole lives ahead of them, and as a matter of fact, she
likes
it that he's not so rooted and conventional. Nick tells her that her
brother
may have a point after all. Sophia tells Nick that he's everything
she's ever
wanted, no matter what anyone else thinks. Maggie catches sight of
them on
the roof, spys on them for a while, and then spitefully locks the door.
When
they try to go back downstairs, they find it locked and resume kissing,
only
to be interrupted by Tomas, who comes and "rescues" them after he
overhears
Maggie let it slip to Joe that Nick and Sophia are up there. Later,
Tomas
confronts Maggie about locking the door, but she airily denies doing
so.

RACHEL/FELICIA/SHARLENE

Two cops from the precinct come by the hospital and insist on taking a
picture
of the three women together, much to Felicia and Sharlene's discomfort.

Rachel insists that they all go out to celebrate; it takes some doing,
but she
finally convinces them to go to Carlino's. Tony serves them, and Joe
comes
in crowing about his new son. Sharlene snips at Felicia about the
birthday
party for Gregory; Felicia acts the aggrieved victim. Rachel gets a
phone
call from Carl wanting to know about his new grandchild, and she leaves
the
table to go take it. Sharlene confronts Felicia again about her
worming her
way into Gregory's life. John comes into the restaurant and demands of

Sharlene that she take it up with him. Sharlene tells him that she's
going
to file for sole custody of Gregory, so his father won't have a chance
to

expose their son to his new lifestyle with his mistress....

MICHAEL/NICK

Nick resumes pleading with Michael to get Jake named Businessman of the
Year.
Michael comments that Sophia must mean an awful lot to him, if Nick is
willing
to go to all this trouble just to become respectable and impress her
brother.
Nick says that he never imagined it was possible to care about someone
so much.
Michael says okay, he'll do his best to talk Jake up to his business
cronies..

GABE/LORNA

Lorna tearfully pleads with Gabe to tell her the whole truth, not just
the part
of it that he's shared so far. She says she's is truly heartbroken
over his

loss of his wife and son, but she still has to know who was the woman
in

Boston. Gabe is still angry with Lorna, and at first refuses to talk
to her,
saying his past is no longer a secret, it's an open wound that she
won't let

alone. Lorna says that she deserves to know everything. Gabe finally
says
that the woman in Boston was Cindy, Sarah's sister and his
sister-in-law.
They became close after the tragedy, but she's certainly not his
girlfriend
or lover. Gabe tells Lorna that he went to Boston for a Jewish
ceremony

called the unveiling, in which sometime in the year after a death,
there is

a graveside service in which the rabbi lifts a cloth from the
gravestone and
says a few words. This would be the one year anniversary of Sarah and
Sam's
deaths. Very distraught at the memories, Gabe goes on to tell Lorna
that
there is a Jewish prayer called the Kaddish that you say every day for
eleven
months after a person close to you has died. He recites part of it to
Lorna.
Lorna realizes that the eleven-month mark would have fallen on the same
day
she and Gabe first made love. Gabe says that's right, that was the
first night
in eleven months that he didn't lie in bed and pray; it came as a
revelation
to him, something lifted and opened up inside him that night. Lorna
says that
she knows what she did was sneaky and underhanded; she asks Gabe if he
can
possibly forgive her. Gabe says he does forgive her; Lorna is
overjoyed, but
then Gabe tells her that he can never see her again. Lorna is
bewildered and
hurt all over again. Gabe tells her that as long as he kept his
feelings for
her in the safe part of his heart, separate from the painful memories,

everything was all right, but now that she's meddled into his past, he
can no
longer keep his past and his relationship with her separate, and it's
made him
realize that he's not in fact ready for this relationship at all.
Lorna tries
to make him reconsider, but his mind is made up. Outside Gabe's
office, as
a still-celebrating Joe and the rest of the cops start boisterously
singing
"Take me out to the ballgame", a bereft Lorna and Gabe stare at each
other

wordlessly. Gabe briefly takes her face in his hands, and then
abruptly leaves
the office. Lorna looks after him, still crying....

JOE/PAULINA/SOPHIA

Later, Joe heads back to the hospital to visit Paulina. He tells her
that

their financial situation is much better today than yesterday, since he
now
owns the building Carlino's is in. Paulina is thrilled. The subject
of Nick
comes up; Joe is somewhat surprised that Paulina doesn't immediately
lecture
him about not harassing Nick and Sophia. Paulina tells Joe that she's
starting
to think that Nick may not be the right guy for Sophia after all.
Outside in
the hall, Sophia overhears. After Joe leaves, Sophia comes into
Paulina's room
and says Paulina used to be so supportive of her and Nick; what has
changed?
Paulina is initially reluctant to say, but Sophia says she has a right
to know
what's going on, and Paulina agrees. Then Paulina bites the bullet and
tells
Sophia that all the time Nick has been dating her, he's also been
sleeping with
another girl. Sophia's expression is shocked and uncomprehending.....
