A PICTURE IS WORTH 1000 WORDS
Sharlene/Michael/Cass/Cecile

Hudson Farm - Sharlene shows up and gives Michael a big hug for all
the birthday presents he'd given Gregory, especially since she's so
strapped for cash this year and John hadn't been well enough to go
shopping. She asks about Gary; he'll be fine with Josie's help, says
Mike. I used to think her love would be enough, admits Sharlene, but now
I realize love and marriage are just a crapshoot, you can't predict. You
can if you marry the same woman over and over again, Mike quips. She
starts to ask about John - then she spots the photo of Greg sharing a
birthday hug with Felicia, and she goes ballistic. She's livid at how
Felicia is worming her way into Greg's life, confusing him and humiliating
her, especially since John knew she didn't want Felicia around her son.

Mike knew nothing about this, he wasn't around, but Sharlene suspects Greg
didn't tell her about Felicia's presence at John's request. He's a
sensitive kid, says Mike, he probably didn't want to upset you. Sharlene
recalls Greg's presents, and guesses the rollerblades came from Felicia.

She threatens to go upstairs and rake John over the coals, but Mike stops
her - John's still recuperating, he needs his rest. How convenient,
sneers Sharlene. She decides to go to the the source and confront
Felicia. Tell John I took the evidence, she snaps, grabbing the photo and
storming out.

Bookstore - Cass catches Cecile on yet another break, and chews her
out for loafing after he and Felicia had put aside their doubts and hired
her. He hands her a stack of books to shelve, and she sulks off.

Sharlene comes in looking for Felicia to give her a piece of her mind, but
Cass doesn't know Felicia's whereabouts. She assures him the divorce is
still on, this is about something else. Cass cautions her that a judge
would frown on it if she and Felicia had another public scene. Sharlene
is irate that Felicia took away her husband and now expects public
sympathy, why do I always have to be calm and understanding, I'm sick of
it. Cass urges her to take a break and pull herself together, maybe take
Greg to the zoo, didn't he just have a birthday? Sharlene gives an ironic
chuckle, then admits she's falling apart. Cass gives her a comforting
hug, which is interrupted by a crash from the stacks. Cecile! he moans,
going to investigate and repair the damage. Cecile emerges, sees
Sharlene, and claims she's not an employee, she's a, uh, uh, decorating
consultant for Felicia, yeah, that's it. Sharlene asks her where Felicia
is; I've had some experience as "the other woman," Cecile answers warily
- you don't have a gun, do you? She tells Sharlene she'll have to wait
for Felicia to get back from the Cory cabin... Sharlene dashes out. Cass
hears the door slam and worries whether Sharlene is all right. She's
fine, says Cecile cattily, it's Felicia you should worry about.

GET-WELL PRESENT
Cass/John

John is up in his room reading when he hears Cass's voice calling
from downstairs, and invites him up. He's glad for Cass's visit; Cass
asks how he's doing, but admits it's not a social call. He takes a seat
near John and pulls a brown envelope out of his inside jacket pocket -
It's your divorce papers, he says solemnly, handing John the packet, have
your lawyer call me.  John asks for the name of a good divorce lawyer;

Cass promises to give it some thought, call me later. He warns John that
this is just the beginning: the lawyers will go back forth, papers will go
back and forth, emotions will run the gamut - then one day you'll get the
final paper in the mail and it will all be over. Hang in there, and feel
better, Cass adds. As he's leaving, he has one more question for John: I
know it's not my place, but - Felicia's my best friend, I love Sharlene, I
care about you - when the divorce is final, are you going to marry
Felicia?

COP INTRIGUE
Josie/Gary/Tibbs/Cecile

Josie sees Gary coming up the walk to their place. She tries to
welcome him, but he plows past her, grabs his suitcase out of the bedroom
closet, and starts packing. I'm a drunk, he says, I screwed up, so I'm
letting you off the hook. She shoves the clothes back at him and assures
him he didn't screw up, they'll prove it together and get his job back.

This is our home, she tells him. He hugs her gratefully.

Later, after they've made love, he wants her to stay and cuddle, but
she notes the time and says she's on second shift at the cop shop. As she
dresses, she confides that Gabe is considering her for the vice squad. I
loved Ryan, she says, but he was overprotective, I've gotten more respect
since the citation but you guys are still too overprotective of us female
officers. He glumly reminds her he's no longer on the force. She repeats
that it's only temporary, until they can prove Blair's involvement in the
set-up. He's grateful, but worries about her being on vice, it's too
dangerous. It's what I've always wanted, she reminds him, and I'm a good
cop. She snuggles with him on the bed to distract him [which isn't
difficult]. When we're like this, he tells her, I forget we're cops. She
embraces him, but she looks disturbed.

He walks her to the station house, and she says she wants them to go
to an open AA meeting when she gets off. She tells him she needs to
understand that part of his life and what makes him tick, for the sake of
their marriage and their kids someday. He smiles at the thought and
agrees, and she again assures him they'll figure out what Blair did to get
him drunk in the barn, he'll soon be back on the job. He watches with a
sigh as she enters the station house, kidding around with Tibbs on the way
in. He ends up at the bookstore to hang out at the coffee bar. Cecile
serves him a cup, then recognizes him and notes he looks like he could use
something stronger. She offers to close the shop and let him take her out
for a drink, to make him feel better. Call me Cecile, she coos. Coffee's
fine, he replies morosely.

At the station house, Josie crows to Tibbs that she just got an
undercover assignment. He hands her the lab report she'd been waiting for
on the glove Nick's dog had found in the barn. Traces of chloroform on
the glove, Josie reads with satisfaction - and several fingerprints. The
Cobra left her mark, she tells Tibbs.

POKER GAME
Joe/Jake/players

Town Square - On an impulse, Joe buys a lottery ticket at the
newsstand, and wins an instant $500. As he collects the money, he's
delighted but admits it's just a drop in the bucket compared to his debts.

The sympathetic merchant gives him a hot tip on how he can make some
serious money fast - there's a high stakes poker game he can get in on.

Meanwhile, there's a knock at the door of a fancy hotel suite.

Welcome, gentlemen, let the games begin, grins the host - it's Jake! Jake
and the two high rollers mill around waiting for more players, a lot of
guys have had to cancel tonight. They're relieved when there's another
knock at the door, but Jake is nervous when he opens the door and sees
Joe. Afraid it's a police bust, he tries to play innocent and hustle Joe
out, but Joe walks in and announces he's here as a player, deal me in. As
they set up to play, Jake draws Joe aside and advises him to leave, this
is a high stakes game, as your landlord I happen to know you have no
money, I'm sure your pregnant wife doesn't know you're here. Joe flashes
the $500 he just won and claims he's here to clean them out. Jake offers
to pay off Joe's debts if he'll leave, which offer Joe of course rejects.

They return to the table, and Jake deals the first hand. As the foursome
puff on big ugly cigars, Joe wins the first hand. Pretty lucky, says one
player, why haven't we seen you here before? Because I'm a cop, Joe
states. Jake starts laughing like it's a joke, and the others join in.

Joe has a hot streak and rakes in a pile of chips. The others are about
to cut their losses and go home, when Jake's latest hand finally tops
Joe's, and Joe has to give back some of his haul. Joe nearly chokes on
his cigar, and the others decide to hang around a little longer.

Later, with Jake now sitting on most of the chips, he proposes one
last hand: five-card showdown cutthroat. If you don't fold, and you lose,
he explains to Joe, you have to match the pot. He again advises Joe to
sit out this hand, but Joe says he's in. Jake deals out the cards face
up. One guy folds, then the other, leaving Joe with 3 9's and Jake
showing the 4, 5, 7, and 8 of Clubs. Jake bumps the pot $1000, but Joe
thinks he's crazy and won't fold. Jake deals the final cards: garbage to
Joe, and the 6 of Clubs to himself, winning with the inside straight. You
now owe me $2,300, Jake smirks, what do you want to do? He escorts the
other players out, then offers Joe one last wager to clear the debt: one
cut of the cards, high card wins - if I win, the restaurant is mine; if
you win, you get the building, I won't be your landlord anymore. Joe
accepts, but insists on using a new deck. Jake skillfully shuffles, and
Joe motions for Jake to cut first. He turns up the Queen of Hearts - top
that, lover-boy, he taunts. Joe takes his cut and looks at it, then at
Jake.

SPECIAL DELIVERY
Rachel/Felicia/Paulina/Sharlene

Cory Cabin - Paulina, an emotional basket case after her fight with
Joe, shows up at the Cory cabin and catches Rachel and Felicia decorating
for a party. They decide to come clean - you're a day early, this was
supposed to be a surprise baby shower for you. She bursts into
uncontrollable sobs, and they rush to comfort her, alarmed. They get her
to the couch and promise to cancel the party if it upsets her so much.

Through her tears she tells them Joe hates her now, they fight all the
time, all he cares about is keeping Sofia away from Nick. She's worried
that Joe was brought up believing Father Always Knows Best, and she and
their kids are in for a life of yelling and domineering. Sofia calls him
Fred Flintstone, she wails, and I just don't want to be Wilma! They try
to reassure her, she and Joe will have a great marriage. She reminds them
of her money problems, he won't accept help or even a loan from her family
or friends, and she's trying to respect his wishes, even as they sink
deeper in debt. Then she bemoans the culture clash between Corys and
Carlinos. Rachel admits family dynamics can be a real challenge,
sometimes it feels like you're the only one giving 100%, but in the long
run the rewards are worth it. Felicia regrets not raising Lorna, and
admits her joy at being Charlie's godmother and watching her grow, and
it'll be even better for Paulina and her own baby.

Paulina, her crying jag largely over, is inspired and eager to rush
back to Joe's arms. As they help her rise, she winces at a sudden pang
and they brace her through what she assumes is another false labor pain.

The crisis past, Felicia eggs Paulina into opening a gift before she
leaves. It's from Felicia, a summer baby romper and a gift certificate
for a year's worth of diapers. Paulina is thrilled. They're interrupted
by a knock at the door, which baffles them all. Rachel opens the door to
Sharlene, who apologizes when she sees they're having a party. She starts
to back away, then she changes her mind and bursts in. No, dammit, she
snarls at a stunned Felicia, I'm not sorry, you should be the one
apologizing to me! She ignores Rachel's attempts to intervene, and
lambastes Felicia for cozying up to her son at his birthday party,
flashing the photo as proof. *I* will love and protect and care for
Gregory, she shouts, ME, not some rich whore who can't leave a happy
fam... Felicia slaps her across the face. Sharlene pauses, then comes
back blazing that she refuses to be meek and accepting while Felicia tries
to buy her son with expensive gifts that his mother can't afford. I had
to rearrange my whole schedule to give John a chance to celebrate with his
son, she yells, and why? Not because I smashed our family to pieces, but
because you did, you and John - and if I complain, I'm a bitch - well, I'm
not the bitch, YOU are, and I don't ever want you near my son again,
understand??? Felicia claims Sharlene has misunderstood her intentions,
I'm sorry you feel you've been hurt. You're not gonna have all the fun,
while I work my butt off just to give my son the mere basics, Sharlene
growls back - and you're getting the skates back. Felicia defiantly
retorts that she's sick of apologizing to Sharlene, and she tries to
leave, but Sharlene pulls her back by the arm and demands she stay and
finish this. Felicia pleads with her to save it for a more private
setting, not embarrass both of them in front of their friends, but
Sharlene won't let her off the hook. Rachel again intervenes, urging
Sharlene to go home and cool off. Suddenly, Paulina lets out a wail. The
pains are coming every 10 minutes, she cries in a panic.

Later, Sharlene is sitting at Paulina's side encouraging and
preparing her for the imminent childbirth, the pains are now 7 minutes
apart. Felicia keeps trying to reach Joe by phone, but no luck. She
confides to Rachel that a recording says the phone lines are down due to a
broken water main, and BTW the bridge is washed out and they can't get
back to town! They stew, as Paulina wails and Sharlene gets her to focus
and breathe. Eventually the pains are 2 minutes apart. Paulina moans
that Joe should be here helping me walk off the pain like we practiced.

Rachel announces that we can't wait any longer, we're going to deliver
this baby. NO! shrieks Paulina, as they try to keep her from collapsing
in hysterics. FREEZE FRAME.

That's it -
