DOUBLE DATE - OR TRIPLE?
Sofia/Joe/Maggie/Charlie/Frankie/Paulina/Nick/Tom'as

     Outside Carlino's, Nick gives a reluctant Tom'as a last-minute pep
talk about how this fake double-date will work great. Just bring Sofia to
Sassy's, he says, I'll go pick up Maggie and meet you there - but don't
forget, he adds as an afterthought, this is just a ruse to get around Joe,
Sofia's still MY girl. I'll write myself a note, Tom'as digs.

Inside, Sofia sits at a table, impatiently waiting for Tom'as to pick
her up. Joe's surprised she's not more dressed up, but she's still so
hostile that he drops it. He expresses his approval of her choice of
Tom'as, a responsible guy with a future (unlike Nick). She makes it clear
she still resents his orders not to see Nick. Joe reminds her that Nick
agreed to the deal: stop seeing her, or he goes back to jail. You have
plenty of faults yourself, Sofia points out, and Nick isn't the demon you
claim he is. You're not dating someone with a police record, Joe insists,
I have to look out for you - you'll soon meet someone nice, maybe even
Tom'as. Tom'as arrives with flowers; Joe welcomes him with open arms, but
Sofia is still surly as they leave - they're vague when Joe asks where
they're going tonight. Outside, Tom'as gives Sofia a chance to back out,
but Sofia snarls that Joe's given her no choice if she wants to see Nick.

They exit.

Winthrop house - Maggie has the living room in a shambles getting
ready for her "date" with Nick. With music playing full blast, Charlie
wants to join in the grown-up fun, and Maggie's adorned her with makeup,
jewelry, and Frankie's too-big shoes. Frankie storms in to cut the
volume, protesting this abuse of her good shoes. The doorbell rings, and
Charlie (expecting Nick) clomps over to get it nearly before Frankie can
stop her. Never answer the door alone, always wait for me or Daddy,
reprimands Frankie, catching her at the door. They open it, it's Paulina.

Maggie's dating Nick, Charlie announces. While Frankie gently lectures
Charlie about not answering the door by herself, Paulina gleefully
inspects the sack of Charlie's baby clothes that Frankie is giving her.

She predicts Joe will hit the roof, but Frankie assures her she won't be
needing them any time soon - with the addition of Maggie, her family has
gotten big enough for now. Maggie flounces in and drowns out their
conversation with her blow dryer. Frankie unplugs the dryer to get some
peace, but Charlie knocks over the sack of clothes on her way to turn the
music back on and starts dancing around. Frankie's at her wits' end, but
Paulina steps in, clicks off the music, and restores quiet. In the
confusion, Nick walks in, and Maggie shrugs when Frankie chews her out for
leaving the door unlocked. Maggie makes a big show of kissing Nick hello,
and drags him out the door. Charlie tells Frankie she wants to date Nick,
too - Frankie tells her she looks beautiful, but it's time to wipe off the
makeup. Charlie exits, and Paulina tells Frankie I hope I'm half as good
a mother as you are. Maggie won't listen to me, Frankie points out with a
sigh; she only listens to Nick, Paulina observes. They share a grimace.

Outside, Nick warns Maggie not to overdo the kissy stuff, con or no
con; come on, Sofia's waiting. He dashes off; let her wait, Maggie sneers
to herself, and she follows him.

Back at Carlino's - Joe is agonizing over bills when Paulina returns
with her sack of baby duds. When he sees her he pretends everything is
hunky-dory, but she doesn't buy it and she pleads with him to let her
help. No way, he insists, I'll worry about bills, you worry about baby -
what's in the bag? She shows him the clothes she got from Frankie. He
refuses to take charity or let his kid wear hand-me-downs, and suggests
she donate them to the church. Paulina puts her foot down, and Joe
finally relents. She says she thinks they need some fun, and offers to
use her KBAY severance check to treat them to a night out dancing while
they still can - you pick the place. He agrees.

Sassy's - Sofia sits at a table with Tom'as, impatiently waiting for
Nick. He and Maggie arrive, and Sofia makes a beeline for him. As they
kiss, Maggie insists they all join Tom'as, we have to make this look like
a real double-date. Sofia starts to follow her, but Nick stops her - I
want to be alone with you, let's get out of here, he urges, kissing her
nick. This time it's Tom'as who darts over - no way are you leaving me
alone with Maggie, he protests. Sofia feels guilty about sticking Tom'as
with Maggie, and talks Nick into staying put.

Meanwhile, Rafael, who's been watching with amusement, takes the
opportunity to invite himself to sit with Maggie. Maggie scowls. He
needles her about Tom'as being not interested and Nick being hung up on
Sofia - you need a date, and I nominate me. Maggie snottily tells him to
take a hike, but he stays.  Nick, Sofia and Tom'as return to the table;

Nick greets Rafael cordially, but Rafael makes a snide comment to Tom'as
about ratting him out to the police sketch artist, causing him to be
hassled for Maggie's abduction. He returns to the bar; Maggie, Tom'as and
Sofia bad-mouth him, but Nick sticks up for his old friend. The four of
them sit in awkward silence for a minute, then Maggie drags Tom'as to the
dance floor. They start a decent lambada, then Rafael jerks Tom'as away
and takes his place. Maggie gives a girlish shriek as they nearly come to
blows. Nick steps in and demands they cool it, the whole idea was to give
me some time with Sofia, so back off. Maggie returns to Sofia at the
table. Sofia apologizes for the whole mess, it would be easier if I just
tell Joe the truth. You can't, Maggie cries, he'll put Nick in jail.

Tom'as and Nick return, and Nick asks Sofia to dance. Tom'as and Maggie
decide they might as well dance, too - but as they rise from the table,
Maggie notes with dismay that Joe and Paulina have just walked in! She
quickly cuts in on Nick and Sofia and does a quick partner switch. Nick
and Maggie try to look like a couple, as do Tom'as and Sofia, but Joe
spots them and gets suspicious. Paulina can't stop him; he demands an
explanation from Sofia.

ANGST ON THE FARM
Felicia/John/Sharlene/Josie/Gregory/Michael

Hudson farmhouse - Sharlene is milling around outside when Josie
arrives with Gregory. She gives him a hug and he scurries out to the barn
to see Clementine [horse? pig? rabbit?]. Left alone, Josie remarks on
seeing Felicia's car. Sharlene admits she feels odd about the
arrangement; but she insists she's delighted at the prospect of discussing
Josie's wedding plans tonight. Josie's concerned that Gary isn't here
yet. Also, she doesn't want Felicia around to hear her wedding plans, it
might show up in her next novel. I'm sure she'll be gone by then, says
Sharlene; she brings up the scandalous stories she's been reading about
Josie in the Herald - is Cobra still after Gary? I hope not, Josie
answers. She admits she's nervous about the idea of marriage; Greg
barrels through on his way from the barn to the house to tell Mike about
Clementine, then they continue their talk. Don't worry, says Sharlene,
you'll make mistakes like everyone else, and you'll work through them, no
reason you can't have a long, happy marriage. Josie tells her about
asking John to give her away; Sharlene looks uneasy, then tells her about
filing for divorce, if it makes any difference, because it doesn't to me.

Are you sure you want to do this? Josie wonders. It's not what I wanted,
Sharlene admits, but I really had no choice, for Gregory's sake. She
assures Josie she's fine - it hurts now, but I have a feeling I have an
interesting life ahead of me.

Inside, Felicia fusses around John, bringing him a glass of water and
a cushion for his back. She crouches by his chair when he says he needs
to tell her something - Sharlene is divorcing me. He admits it threw him
to hear the words, but considering all the vows he'd broken, it wasn't
exactly a surprise. He regrets all the pain he caused, but not loving
Felicia. My marriage worked for a long time, he says, but now it's over.

They're interrupted when Mike enters toting Greg, who runs to John's lap.

As Felicia backs away, Josie and Sharlene enter. Josie greets Felicia
coolly, then asks Mike to set an extra place - for Gary, coming to discuss
wedding plans. Mike offers the use of the farm; as Mike, Sharlene and
Josie chatter away, they totally ignore Felicia. John catches her eye and
silently urges her to stay, but she's obviously uncomfortable.

Later, while Josie and Sharlene go out for a walk, John walks Felicia
to the door, concerned about how uncomfortable this has been for her. She
has to admit he's thriving out here at the farm, better than he would have
at her place [especially if Cecile is still there!], and at least she can
visit while he recuperates. They share a long farewell kiss.

Outside, Josie tells Sharlene she'd always hoped to get married at
the Frame farm, but the Hudson farm will be great. Mike comes over, and
Josie remarks that Gary is still a no-show. She goes to the house to try
calling him. You're turning into a nice guy, Sharlene tells Mike. I
always was, he quips, exiting. Yes, you were, she says to herself.

Josie enters the house, catches John and Felicia kissing, and
scurries through quickly to find a phone. Felicia sighs, and tells John
she needs to go check on Lorna. I love you, he whispers, nibbling her
ear, never forget that. She exits, and runs into Sharlene on the porch.

As they pass, Felicia stops and asks Sharlene for a moment of her time.

She thanks Sharlene for getting Mike to let her visit John here, I just
hope you've been able to, uh, make peace with all this. Sharlene looks
floored, but just cautions her, whatever you decide to do, don't forget
that Gregory is just a little boy. I'd never hurt Gregory, Felicia
protests. You already have, Sharlene reminds her, you may not have
planned it, but the original plan was that John should stay married. She
continues: John was a married man with a family, and you knew that - the
bottom line is, it just didn't matter to you. [Amen, Shar!] Felicia exits,
chastened.

Inside, Mike asks John if ditching Sharlene is what he really wants.

John admits he'll always love Sharlene, but he has a rapport with Felicia
that he never had with Sharlene. Mike wonders if he's ever really taken
time to consider how he actually feels about either Sharlene or Felicia -
you were into it with Felicia before you were out of it with Sharlene, you
probably could use some perspective before you make a decision. Josie
joins them - still no word from Gary.

Later, alone, Sharlene tells John it's time they tell Gregory about
the divorce. He thinks it's too soon, but Sharlene says Cass has already
put it in motion. She calls Greg in, and John has no choice. Greg
wonders when John is coming home; John reassures him they'll see each
other all the time, but I don't live with you anymore. You're getting
divorced, Greg figures out. He mopes over to play with his ball and
glove; John motions to Sharlene to let him handle this, and Sharlene
leaves them alone to bond. You'll always be a part of me, he says, you're
the reason I came out of my coma. Then COME HOME, Greg demands. John
tries again: I don't live with you anymore, but now you have two homes.

Greg asks a series of questions about Felicia: does she live here? (no) Is
she your girlfriend? (yes) Do you love her? (yes) More than Mom?
(differently) Greg says Felicia smells good; John agrees, and says she
likes you, you should ask her to tell you some of her stories, she has
great stories.

Sharlene eavesdrops to make sure Greg's o.k., then joins Josie out on
the porch. They enjoy the country night sky, but Josie's starting to
worry about Gary.

GARY'S SECRET MACHO MISSION
Blair/Gary/Felicia

At the docks, Blair confronts Gary about following her, she knows
it's not an official police tail. He says he has no intention of letting
her pose a threat to himself or Josie. She reminds him that she never
laid a finger on Josie, and she refuses to give up her new life because of
his paranoia. They accuse each other of planting the snake in Blair's
hotel room, and both deny it. Blair insists she'd never have endangered
Matt, I love him - I'm asking you to give me a chance, I told Matt the
whole truth and he doesn't care! Gary doesn't buy the new improved Cobra,
calls her naive about Matt, says she's incapable of love and he wants her
out of town. She refuses, and warns him to just go about his life with
Josie and leave her alone, or it's Matt and Josie who'll get hurt. Gary
chooses to take that as a threat; I don't do deals with snakes, he growls,
storming off.

He returns to the precinct house, asks a cop if Josie's called
(nope), and heads for Gabe's office. He tries calling the farm but gets a
busy signal. Frustrated, he pulls out Gabe's bottle of Irish booze again,
uncaps it, and stares at it. He raises the bottle to his lips, takes a
sniff, then replaces the cap with a sigh. He recites one of his 12 Steps
about "admitting we are powerless," and puts the bottle back in the
drawer. He exits, telling the cop he's on his way to the farm if Josie
calls. Back in a dark corner we see that Blair has sneaked in and heard
this [so much for the BCPD Security System].

Back at the Hudson farm, Felicia is wandering around out back,
stewing over Sharlene's [accurate] words, trying to calm down before she
drives home. Gary arrives; he asks about John, she congratulates him on
his engagement, and she sympathizes over the recent stories about him in
the Herald. He sees she's upset, assures her she can count on him, and
they resolve to go to an AA meeting together and talk over their problems
afterward. Felicia exits; then Gary is startled by the bang of the barn
door slamming shut behind him. He goes inside to check it out, but not a
creature is stirring (not even Clementine). He calls out: Michael?

(silence) Josie? (silence) Suddenly, Blair grabs him from behind and claps
a handkerchief over his mouth. FREEZE FRAME.

As ever,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
