Welcome, here's the update for Another World for Friday,
April 28, 1995:

* John has disturbing news for Clara; Mike returns
* Vicky builds up resentment against Mike
* Grant back to his old self again
* Justine goes snooping [what's her problem, anyway?]
* Spence looking more and more like dead meat

SHARLENE/GREGORY/JOHN

Sharlene and Gregory bring a surprise picnic lunch
and spread it out on the floor of John's office. John
enters grimly, can't even manage a half-smile for his
son. He quietly tells Sharlene that Clara's test results
don't look good. Her high blood pressure led them to
discover she's been having small stroke "episodes," no
permanent damage, but now I have to tell her she has to
totally change her active lifestyle and slow down. Rotsa
ruck, says Sharlene. John cancels his appointments, and
tells Gregory they'll reschedule the picnic.

RYAN/VICKY et al./CLARA/JOHN/SHARLENE/MICHAEL

Ryan and Vicky bring Steven and Kirk to visit with
Clara at her farm. Clara is very peppy, playing catch
with Steven and delighted to see granddaughter Vicky and
family. Vicky surprises Clara by giving her the complete
CD collection of Frank Sinatra (Clara doesn't have a CD
player, but Vicky's taken care of that, too, they'll
deliver it tomorrow). Clara excitedly remembers sitting
in the front row for a Sinatra concert when she was a
teen. It's a "girl thing," Ryan explains to Steven.
Clara makes Vicky hand Kirk to Ryan so she can show her
how to jitterbug. After a minute she gets winded and
sits down, but says she was sick of being in Florida with
all those old people, she's happy to be home with all the
kids around to keep her young. Vicky tells her she and
Ryan are engaged - hugs all around, then Clara says
Michael must be so proud. Michael doesn't know, admits
Vicky uncomfortably. Clara invites the gang to stay for
dinner, Vicky could be here when Mike calls tonight; but
Vicky says they have to go. Clara cheerily ushers them
out [see below], as John and Sharlene arrive.

Sharlene tries to look upbeat, but John still looks
grim. Spit it out, son, says Clara defiantly, is my
number up? As John finishes explaining her condition, he
gives her some pills for her blood pressure. Great, she
says, pocketing the pills, now I have to start dinner.
He drags her back to her seat and makes her listen, while
he and Sharlene stress the need to drastically reduce her
physical activities. No way, she says, I'm used to hard
work, that's why I came back to the farm...I know what
you're trying to do, she continues, you're trying to get
me to leave my farm - well, it's not going to work. John
says that as a doctor he strongly advises she leave farm
life behind; Sharlene says they just want to keep her
healthy, and she's welcome to come and live with them,
they'll cut back on asking her to babysit so often.
Clara is irate at the prospect, and says she wants to
discuss it with Mike when he calls tonight. Absolutely,
says John; tell him I said hi, and that BTW my phone's
still listed. They exit, leaving Clara looking
distressed.
Back at the farm, John describes how strong and
active his mother was when he and Mike were kids. He
decides to go back over to be there when Mike calls, in
case he has any questions; besides, he never calls me,
this might be my only chance to talk to him. Good idea,
says Sharlene, this is a family decision, the three of
you should discuss it together. Sorry I'll miss
Charlie's first birthday party, he says. Sharlene
observes that John had a lot to do with Charlie's
survival, he helped get the Winthrops through the darkest
time of their lives; and he'll do the same for Clara. He
leans over and kisses her tenderly - I never want to be
without you again, he says. Clara's lucky to have a
loving son like you, she remarks. I don't think she's
feeling too lucky today, he replies. He exits.
He arrives at Clara's and calls out to her, I'm here
for when Mike calls. He hears footsteps descending the
stairs, and turns to see - [ta-daa] Michael. I thought
I'd try and save myself a long-distance charge, he quips.
He laughs out loud at John's surprised expression, then
they embrace like...long lost brothers, maybe?

RYAN/VICKY

Back at home, Ryan questions Vicky about the
apparent rift between her and Michael. She changes the
subject by telling him about Gun-boy's [I *LOVE* that
name!] visit to try to see Kirk, and how he got Paulina
to offer to monitor his visits - I told them I'd think
about it, what do you think, step-father-to-be, she asks.
Ryan encourages her to find a way to deal with visitation
for Kirk's father. Vicky says she doesn't want that
slime to ruin her wonderful son, that's why she took the
kid and ran in the first place. Kirk will have us, says
Ryan; and he could resent you if you keep him from
knowing his father - and, speaking of fathers... what's
with you and Michael? Vicky works up a lather thinking
about how Michael manages to call Clara every week, but
couldn't be bothered to call his daughter throughout her
custody fight, her attempted murder trial, her struggle
for Kirk - he wasn't there when I needed him, she says.
Your dad's always been a wild card, admits Ryan, but I
know he loves you. Then where the hell is he, she
demands, he's a flake, he didn't raise his own kids; now
he has a chance to redeem himself by being a caring
grandfather, but it's probably too big a blow to his
youthful self-image...he'd rather play secret agent,
traipsing from port to port and bimbo to bimbo, would it
have hurt so much to call every few months, is his arm
broken? I'm not wasting any more time missing that
pathetic jerk, she adds. She remarks pensively how fast
Kirk is growing, he won't be a baby much longer,
Michael's missed it all, and it stinks; Steven doesn't
even ask about Grampa Mike anymore, why should I sweat to
keep his memory alive - Carl and Spence are all the
grampas my kids need. And what about you, Ryan asks
gently, he's your dad. Is he? Vicky replies.

MEANWHILE, ON A MORE BIZARRE FRONT...

CHRISTOPHE/JUSTINE

Chris returns to the suite to find Justine gazing at
Kirk's photo [see below]. Chris assures her she'll soon
have more than a photo. You're right, she says, he won't
be deprived like Grant was. Soon, she coos to the photo,
you'll have me! [Oh, joy.] Chris remarks that he found
a cafe where the Cory servants hang out; Candy, the maid
doesn't like Rachel much. Chris told her he was doing a
story for a French TV tabloid, and Candy revealed that
the house is empty today - the servants are off
[especially Candy, eh?], Carl and Rachel took Alli to
Chicago, Amanda's at work, Maggie's in Europe (where we
should be, Chris notes). Justine suggests an
unauthorized "historic tour" of the Cory mansion - but
what about security? Chris smugly observes that their
sophisticated system mysteriously stopped functioning, it
will take days to repair. Justine is delighted; as she
goes to get ready for their "tour," Chris takes a pair of
wire cutters from his inside pocket, smirks, and returns
them to the pocket. Shortly Justine appears in a black
skulking outfit, as Chris puts on his black leather
gloves. She spritzes on some "Indiscretion" perfume; "He
won't be there, you know," Chris reminds her. She looks
miffed, but they exit.
Later, we see them snooping through the Cory
bedroom, making snide comments - it's dreary, more like a
living room than a boudoir; the silver items are good
quality, the kind Chris used to steal; fancy lingerie -
American women buy books and magazines to learn how to be
attractive; etc. Chris cautiously wants them to leave,
but Justine has wandered into the closet and emerges with
Carl's dressing gown - I can still smell his cologne, she
sighs, everytime I've smelled it over the years I've felt
compelled to find Carl again. Chris pries open her
fingers and takes the robe away, returning it to the
closet and again urging that they leave. She studies a
photo of Carl and Rachel - It's almost time to reveal
myself, she says, there's just one more detail to take
care of. What detail, Chris asks with concern, tell me
so I can help - you're obsessed with this, I'm concerned
for your health [Hmmmmmm...]. As he ushers her out, he
tries to get her to leave the photo behind, like a
kleptomaniac child - but she goes back for it, taking
care to wickedly knock over the vase with the rose on
Rachel's dressing table. They exit.

GRANT/SPENCE/CHRIS/JUSTINE

Gun-boy is frantically scouring every nook and
cranny of the Harrison suite. When Spence enters, Grant
snarls that he can't find his only photo of Kirk - who
the hell would steal it, he growls. [Why, dear sneaky
old Mom, of course - see above.] Spence helps him comb
the suite, but no luck. Grant is livid; Spence tries to
calm him down, we'll question the hotel staff, or maybe
Lorna's seen it. Lorna's history, Gun-boy replies
grimly. Spence: "I think that's wise, son." Grant: "No
kidding." Spence says that's rough, but Lorna was a
liability. Not to worry, says Gun-boy, perking up - I
took your advice, I'm starting my comeback by writing a
book about my misunderstood misadvantures: Cory has
already agreed to publish it, and best of all [ta-
daaaa!], Amanda's my editor - one step closer to getting
back my career and my marriage, he chortles arrogantly.
Spence is flabbergasted, but skeptical that he can win
Amanda back so easily. She's a woman, smirks Gun-boy,
they seldom know how they really feel, it's up to us to
tell them. [Do you believe this pond-scum??] That may
work with voters, observes Spence, but don't try it on
Amanda - why not focus on getting visitation with
Kirkland? It's a done deal, responds Grant (very pleased
with himself) - I got Paulina to plead my case with
Vicky, I'm confident she'll relent. Amanda thinks she's
acting in the best interests of her company, he
continues, Vicky thinks she's acting in the best
interests of her son, and I win on both counts. Careful,
Spence warns, you've made amazing progress, but one more
scandal and I guarantee you're finished for good.
Later, as they dine in, even Mr. I'm-the-Center-of-
the-Universe notices that Spence doesn't look too good,
all tense and distracted. I really have everything under
control, says Gun-boy, "trust that for once." (Even
Grant realizes, that's what he said the LAST time...) He
insists that people will forget his mistakes, they always
do; I'll get everything back, and Vicky better not cross
me - I grew up without a mother, I don't want Kirk
growing up without me. Spence grimaces, holding his head
like he's got a migraine, as Grant describes his idea of
a future with Kirk, taking him fishing (like Spence never
did with him), etc. Just don't push it, counsels Spence,
with Amanda or with Kirk. I know what I'm doing, Gun-boy
repeats. Spence stares at him - You remind me of Justine
when you talk like that, he says, and lately I've felt
like she was nearby. I barely remember her, answers
Grant, I'd give anything to have had a few more years
with her - but, what's past is past. I lost my mother,
but I won't lose Amanda - I think I'll give her a call
about my book, and please "see that I'm not disturbed."
[Note: 1) Too late!; 2) Who else is living there??] He
exits, as Spence mops his brow with his napkin. Shortly
after, as he's massaging his neck and shoulders and
pulling at his necktie, Gun-boy emerges and announces
success, he's off to see Amanda. The phone rings, Grant
notes that it's Spence's line, and exits. Spence answers
- the caller doesn't give his name, but we see it's
Chris, inviting Spence down to Suite 302 of the same
hotel: "An old acquaintance wishes to buy you a glass of
Straga [have we established what that is yet?]." Justine
gleefully hangs up Chris's phone. No, Spence moans with
dread to the dead line.
Spence arrives at Suite 302 and knocks on the door.
Justine opens it and leans against the door, enjoying
Spence's distress. Well, she purrs with smug contempt,
it's been a long time, hasn't it, "Johnny?" Spence just
stares at her. FREEZE FRAME.
