Subject: AW: Friday Update, 4/7/95 - THE TRIAL!

Here is the update for Another World for Friday, April 7,
1995:

* Josie and Ian reach an impasse - bye-bye, Ian...
* Rachel and Carl clash over Justine; Annie gives a warning
* The Trial of the Century - and the verdict we've all been
waiting for!

IAN/JOSIE

Ian has finally finished things up at the Harbor Club
and comes to collect Josie for their migration to Australia.
He's psyched, but she's obviously ambivalent. Finally she
tells him, I can't go with you. He's really hurt by this,
and reacts with some nasty references to how little she
regards him. She tries to explain, it's not you, it's that
it's taken me a whole year to finally get my life back
together - coming back from my disaster in L.A., Bonnie's
blackmail, helping nab the stalker on the docks, my mother
coming back from the dead, and now wanting to be a cop. We
love each other, she continues, but we want different
things; you can't stay, and I can't leave. They go back and
forth for a while, but realize there's no way to resolve
their differences. He could never stay and worry about her
being a cop, and she could never leave her world behind to
sit alone while he works on his estuary project. It's only
for a year, she says hopefully - unless you decide to stay.
A year is a long time, he answers pessimistically. He gives
her his temporary address, and promises to call when he gets
a permanent place. She wants to visit, but they realize
it's too far to just drop in. She's so obviously torn up,
he offers to stay, but she says no, she wants him to be
happy. They embrace, then it's time for him to leave for
the airport. They share a last kiss, a final goodbye and I
love you, then she watches as he walks through the door and
down the walk.

CARL/RACHEL/FELICIA/ANNIE (a.k.a. ANNA MARIE)

Rachel demands from Carl whether she really looks like
a dead ringer for Justine, and if that's why he married her.
He says it's absurd; then why didn't you mention the
resemblance, like a normal person, she asks. That was 25
years ago, how should I remember, he responds; but she
reminds him that he tormented her family for years before
they got together. He had held her hostage years ago, he'd
tried to kill Mac, etc. - was it because you were obsessed
with Justine? He tries to reassure her: remember, we became
close because I needed your help to clean up my image so
Ryan would accept me as his father; when we fell in love, I
started to believe I could actually live up to the new
image, all because of you. What if you had to choose
between me and Justine, asks Rachel - they think Justine is
still alive. Carl is stunned. Rachel tells him what
Felicia told her: that Annie is Justine's sister, she says
Justine didn't die giving birth to Ryan, but instead made a
deal with Spencer to leave her children and disappear - she
must have needed the money; no one knows where she is now.
Felicia believes her, says Rachel. So do you, says Carl, I
feel like you're accusing me of something but I don't know
what. He tries to tell her he has no desire to track down
Justine, Rachel is all he needs. She backs away from him,
saying she needs time alone to think. You still don't trust
me, says Carl. Should I? answers Rachel. She exits; he
grabs his coat and leaves purposefully.
Carl arrives at Felicia's, and chews her out for
dumping this Justine thing on Rachel without telling him
first. Felicia says she wanted to protect her friend, and
she won't apologize for telling her the truth. Do you know
for a fact that Justine is alive, he demands. Annie comes
out of the bedroom and joins the conversation: I do, she
says. She introduces herself as Anna Marie, Justine's
sister. Carl remembers that Justine had a sister, but she
confirms that they never met - she hadn't approved of
Justine's affair; but I know she loved you, she adds, you're
probably the only one she ever loved besides herself. He
asks again if she's sure Justine is still alive. Why do you
care, asks Felicia, if you really love Rachel? Because now
that you've dropped it in her lap, I have to resolve it,
don't I? Carl responds with exasperation. But you left her,
Annie challenges him. Strictly speaking, no I didn't, he
corrects her; but do you know where she is? Don't know,
don't care, hope she's dead, answers Sis. I tend to agree
with you there, answers Carl. Felicia is shocked, but Sis
insists that Justine is evil, and blames Carl and Spence for
all her troubles. Carl is at a loss about what kind of
mother would turn her back on her children and pretend to be
dead for 25 years without even trying to contact him; I
didn't even know she was pregnant, he tells Sis, it might
have made a difference back then, but now that I know how
she ran out on Ryan and Grant, any love I might have felt is
gone. Rachel is secure, he adds to Felicia, but I have to
find Justine and settle things. Be careful, Sis warns. He
exits.
Carl returns home, stands outside Rachel's closed
bedroom door and says they have to talk now that he's been
to see Apple Annie, a.k.a. Anna Marie. He gets no answer,
so he enters - but the room is empty.

THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY!!!

Courtroom

Donna rushes into the courtroom to check on Vicky - a
reporter just told me you collapsed. As Morgan takes her
blood pressure for show, Vicky explains it's a fake to stall
for time. Donna says she saw Cass and Ryan in the hall
talking to Grant. Vicky is anxious to rush out there to see
what's going on, but Morgan reminds her to cool it or the
judge will figure out the subterfuge.

Corridor

Lorna stands behind Grant's wheelchair as he snidely
predicts to Cass and Ryan that he's all but won, Vicky is
toast. Wrong, says Ryan, we know you're lying, we have a
new witness to prove Vicky didn't shoot you. Grant thinks
they're bluffing; as Dana peeks in to tell them the judge is
coming back, Billy arrives with [ta-daaa!] Alistair! I'm
sorry, Al tells Grant nervously. Grant looks worried, Ryan
looks smug. Ryan and Cass go back in, and Lorna asks Grant
what's going on. He unconvincingly says it's just hot air,
but then he begs her to show her devotion by getting to Al
in the witness room, to see what lies Ryan has conned him
into testifying to. She looks confused, but agrees.

Witness Room

Billy has just delivered Alistair. John is there
waiting to testify. He asks Dana if she can speed things
up, the hospital is in a crisis over the Bailey Thompson
fiasco. She offers to see if Cass will interrupt his cross-
examination of Grant so John can go right away; then she
exits. Billy tells John he's heard Bailey is about to
plead. Great, says John, then Sharlene won't have to
testify. As they walk away, Lorna peeks in and gestures to
a bewildered-looking Al that she wants to talk to him.

Courtroom

Back in session, Dana asks the judge if John can
testify now. Cass and Ryan whisper to each other that it
could help rattle Grant even more, especially with what John
has to say. Fine with me, Cass tells the judge.
Under direct, John testifies that it's common for coma
victims to take a while before their memory returns fully
(like the shooting). Under cross, Cass asks John to comment
on the medical report; John testifies that both Grant's
hands had minor burns, but Grant couldn't remember how it
happened. Then he reports that Grant's first words coming
out of the coma were "I made it" - no explanation of what he
meant. Finally, Cass asks about the angle of the bullet
wound. Very interesting question, John responds; he
confirms that it wasn't straight from the front, where Grant
claimed Vicky was standing, but at an angle. There are
three posible scenarios, John continues: 1) the shooter was
left-handed; 2) Grant turned to the left as he was shot; or
3) the shooter came up from behind, reached around his right
side and fired back at him. But 1) Vicky is right-handed,
Cass points out; 2) Grant never mentioned turning as he was
shot; so 3) it must have been the third scenario. A real
possibility, John agrees; then he's dismissed. As he
leaves, Dana stops him and whispers whether he's sure about
the angle. Oh, yes, John confirms. He exits, and Dana
looks troubled.
Then Grant is recalled to finish his cross. Cass
starts to lay the groundwork for the final assault: After
the last witness, he says, would you like to change your
testimony about how you were shot? Grant hedges about the
sequence of events - I'd been punched in the face twice, I
was drinking, Vicky was walking around holding the gun on me
- oh, yes, now I remember, she came around from behind and
shot me, yeah, that's the ticket! What about the burns on
your hands, Cass presses, the fireman's report says you
knocked over a candelabra *on your way out* the door,
starting the fire, so you didn't get your burns there. I
don't recall, Grant insists sarcastically, I must have
picked up something hot, mustn't I? Then he freezes as he
sees Lorna enter the courtroom at the back (after talking
with Al). She just shakes her head. As Cass produces the
famous handkerchief, Grant drifts away, remembering Ryan's
words about a new witness, you didn't think you'd get away
with it, did you, etc. Cass brings him back to reality, and
Grant admits the Irish linen hanky is his. Then Cass has
him read out loud the lab report on the hanky, saying it was
covered with gunpowder residue. Grant can't explain it.
Cass moves in for the kill: Let me refresh your memory, he
says. Vicky did come in with a loaded gun, she aimed it at
you - but she lost her nerve, dropped it, and ran out. You
saw your chance to get your son away from her forever, you
wrapped your hanky around the gun to preserve her prints and
you fired the gun into your own body, leaving residue on the
hanky and powder burns on your hands. You shot yourself,
and tried to frame your ex-wife, didn't you, he shouts into
Grant's face. Stunned reactions from Dana, Lorna, Amanda,
Evan, Vicky, Donna, Marshall; Morgan looks almost amused,
and Ryan holds his breath waiting for Grant's response. The
courtroom is in an uproar. The judge restores order, then
calls a sidebar. She starts to chew Cass out for his wild
accusations, but Cass assures her he can prove it all, we
can wrap this up today if we can get Grant to confess. Dana
asks for a recess to talk with Grant. The judge agrees to a
5-minute break, and exits.
Evan and Amanda discuss how twisted Grant is, she's
well rid of him. Lorna doesn't believe it, but Morgan
assures her it's true, the medical reports bear it out. As
Grant is wheeled out, Vicky confronts him about his smug
belief that he'll still win; Ryan tries to subdue her, pulls
her aside (barely within Grant's earshot), and tells her
don't worry, we have a witness, Alistair came back
unexpectedly that night and saw the whole thing through the
window. He didn't want to testify, out of loyalty to
Spencer, says Ryan; but I convinced him you could be wrongly
sent to prison if he didn't. They exit.
Then Dana pounces on Grant for using her to further his
vendetta against Vicky. Grant asks if she can get a
mistrial. No way, she snarls, the judge wants answers and
so do I. I'll plead the Fifth, he suggests. If you do,
I'll charge you with contempt, obstruction - better yet,
I'll give the story to the press, you'll not only lose this
case, you'll also lose your career and your son. I'm
ashamed to have to remind you, "Senator," she continues,
that you swore to tell the truth, the whole truth, and
nothing but the truth - now do it, or I'll make you wish
you'd killed yourself when you pulled that trigger. [Oooh,
go ahead, Dana girl!]

Court reconvenes. As Grant sees Alistair enter at the
back of the courtroom, Cass resumes where he left off: Did
you shoot yourself, Senator? Grant starts pleading that
he'd lost everything, his wife, his child...[his mistress?
his self-respect? his sense of decency? his father - by
choice? his marbles?] Then Vicky came in with that gun,
her eyes full of hate - but she dropped it and ran out.
[DingDingDing - Acquittal time...] He flashes back to the
scene as he relives the moment - he was livid about the baby
switch, then he imagined what would have happened if she had
shot him and he survived, then she'd lose custody - "You
don't deserve him" after you switched the babies and stole
my son. Then I saw the gun, covered with your prints, and I
realized all I had to do was screw up my courage and just do
it. He positioned the gun, prayed "Please let me live,
please let me live" - and fired. Yes, I did it, he cries, I
pulled the trigger and I blamed you - I'm sorry, I'm so
sorry... He breaks down in tears (glancing up periodically
to check audience reaction). Cass looks unsympathetic as he
resumes his seat, the courtroom again in an uproar. Even
Vicky is shocked and disgusted by the display; Lorna is in
shock.
The judge calls another sidebar; then she announces
that the charges are dropped and the case against Vicky is
dismissed. She's ecstatic, hugs first Ryan and then Cass.
Cass says this was the most fun he's ever had in court, and
now he's heading right over to family court to get custody
of Kirk restored to her. On his way out, Donna also hugs
him gratefully and says she didn't buy Grant's self-serving
apology at the end, either. Donna hugs Vicky, and tells her
she's rushing over to tell Bridget the news, and then to
make sure KBAY has the scoop. She exits. Then Vicky asks
Ryan how he got Grant to confess. Ryan can hardly keep from
giggling - you're gonna love this story, he beams, leading
Vicky out into the corridor. Meanwhile Morgan, who has been
sitting behind Lorna, leans forward and puts his arms around
her in support and consolation, as Grant sits pouting in the
witness box.

Corridor

Outside the courtroom, Ryan finishes telling a
delighted Vicky how they outsmarted Grant. She can't
believe how he's learning be as scheming as she is. They
kiss and talk about their rosy future as a family with
Steven and Kirk. He exits to go to the station and wrap
things up with Billy. Vicky starts to leave, when the
paramedic wheels Grant out of the courtroom, Dana at his
heels. Dana says park him in the witness room, I have to
see the judge about your perjury charges.

Witness Room

Once Grant is alone in the room, Vicky enters and can't
resist rubbing his nose in it. What a schmuck, she says -
not only did you shoot yourself, a real bonehead move in
itself; but after all your years of crap, in the end you
fell for the oldest trick in the book! Grant is beside
himself as Vicky says, "Alistair didn't see a thing - Ryan
scammed you into confessing, AND YOU FELL FOR IT!" FREEZE
FRAME.
