Here is the update for Another World for Friday, March 14, 1997 (where
Cass still AWOL - maybe he's out looking for Frankie?):

* Rachel and Matt remember Mac [flashback!], as Matt says good-bye
* Jake's remarks rattle Bobby - trouble in Paradise?
* Sharlene agrees to bait the Grant-trap; "Justine," too?

CARLINOS - Vicky is looking at a take-out menu. Sofia sees she's
preoccupied, and leaves her alone to decide. Vicky is restless and
decides to leave, running into Bobby on his way in. He asks what time for
their date tonight. She says she's not sure they should go out tonight at
all, and Bobby guesses she's worried about Jake. She denies it, but
admits she went to see Jake in home-lockup, to talk strategy about proving
Jake innocent and nailing Grant, and that Jake had told her they shouldn't
see each other for a while. Bobby says that must have hurt, but he
understands, Jake's still in love with you. Nah, we've moved way past
that, claims Vicky, but Jake's probably right, we need to find our
separate ways. Then she decides she'd like to go out w/ Bobby after all,
what time? I'll call you, he says, I have something to do first. [Any
guesses?]
Later, Vicky has ordered a pizza to go, and tells Sofia it's for the
kids and the babysitter. She says the boys are still talking about their
adventure, and invites Sofia to stop by when she gets off. Sofia seems
interested, how late do they stay up? Vicky says Nick will probably let
them stay up late; Sofia suddenly remembers a previous engagement. Is my
brother hassling you? Vicky wonders. Oh, no, says Sofia, our adventure
made us realize we're good friends. Vicky muses that she's still trying
to figure out the friendship thing, you're a better woman than I am. She
exits w/ the food [see below].

VICKY'S HOMESTEAD - Nick is babysitting w/ Steven and Kirkland. He
suggests all sorts of activities; Steve says nice try, but it's not as
much fun w/o Sofia. Nick tries to amuse the boys w/ a card game, but no
luck. Steven hands him the phone to call Sofia to join them, but Nick
refuses. Steven explains to Kirk, Nick likes Sofia but can't tell her in
case she'd get mad, and Sofia likes Nick but she can't tell him because
she couldn't take it back later, so neither says anything so they'll both
be happy. It doesn't make sense to Kirk, but Nick can't deny it. Later
Vicky arrives home w/ the pizza, and sends the kids upstairs to wash up.
Nick notes that she looks psyched for her date, are you and Bobby together
now? Too soon to tell, she says, what about you? He says he's dating
Emily, nothing serious; but Vicky says she was talking about Sofia, who
looked like you two had some unfinished business when I mentioned your
name to her earlier. I cheated on her and broke her heart, says Nick,
she's made it clear she's with Matt now - but Vicky's not so sure...

CORY HACIENDA - Carl comes over w/ an armload of fancy stuffed
animals for the baby, also a first folio of "All's Well That Ends Well" to
introduce the unborn tyke to Shakespeare. Rachel discovers him, she's
overwhelmed but delighted. Matt enters and expresses his displeasure at
Carl's presence. Rachel tries to intercede; but Carl says it's time he
and Matt had a talk, tells her not to worry, and he and Matt exit to the
terrace. Rachel picks up a dress bag from a chair, looks around to see
if anyone's seen her, and carries it upstairs.
On the terrace, Carl tells Matt you've been behaving childishly, yet
you're tenacious and principled, and I respect you. Respect me enough to
leave my mother alone, says Matt. Carl says he can't, he and Rachel and
their baby belong together. Like it our not, he says, I'm the man of this
house, I'm not causing Rachel any unhappiness - can you say the same?
Carl returns to the living room, where he's met by Rachel. He tells her
it's all over, gotta go, and he exits. Matt returns - no one got hurt, he
quips wryly to Rachel.  He repeats that he doesn't want Carl hurting her;
she says she loves Carl, it's worth the risk - Carl's the right man for
her, love doesn't always make sense. Matt says it just feels wrong to
him, does she expect her family to just stand by and do nothing? Yes, she
urges, just trust and support me, as I would do for you. She kisses his
cheek and exits upstairs.
Later, in her bedroom, Rachel studies her own face in the mirror -
sometimes you can't just "stand by," she murmurs. She considers the dress
bag on the bed - is this really going to work? she sighs uneasily. Some
time later, there's a knock at her bedroom door. Matt enters, says he's
been thinking, and he doesn't want to make her more unhappy. You're the
one who's been unhappy, Rachel notes sadly. True, says Matt, and you know
why, it's because of Carl - so I've come to say good-bye. Rachel is
distressed, but Matt says he can't live with the situation, and he doesn't
want to cause her more pain. He says he can't respect her decision to be
w/ Carl, and wishes Mac were around to help figure things out - Mac also
knew when to cut his losses and move on, which is what I'm doing. He
admits he's leaving for a number of reasons (including Sofia), and he's
mostly sorry he can't be happy for the baby; Rachel can see it troubles
him. She admits that, when Matt was a baby, she didn't want him to grow
up because she knew he was her last. Matt wonders if she ever thinks
about Mac, like he does. All the time, she says, Mac loved you very much.
There's a great flashback here, of Mac consoling and comforting a troubled
young Matthew [I don't remember the situation, maybe finding out about
Mitch? Please advise...]. "Believe, Matthew," says Mac, "trust, and let
us love you." I know you love me, Matt tells Rachel, but I also know this
is the right thing for me to do, I'll let you know what I find. Tears
streaming down her face, she embraces him for the last time. I'll always
be here for you, he says, walking out the door [explain that, please!].
She watches him go, weeping softly. [Maybe he'll go find Mitch, and
they'll return together? Hope so...]

JAKE'S "LUXURY" APARTMENT AND JAIL-AWAY-FROM-JAIL - Sharlene has been
summoned over to Jake's place. As Jake paces, Josie (reluctantly) and Gary
ask if Sharlene would go out to dinner with Grant again to help them get
the goods on him for trying to kill Vicky and Bobby. Gary insists she'd
be safe, he'll be nearby, but Sharlene thinks Grant would be suspicious.
Josie quickly takes this as a refusal, too bad, plan's off. Gary takes
her aside to convince her to stop sandbagging before Sharlene has a chance
to decide. Jake takes the opportunity to make his own pitch to Sharlene -
Grant used you to gain respectability so he could get Kirk, he failed in
his attempt to leave the boys motherless but that doesn't mean he's given
up. Gary points out it was Grant who put Sharlene in that wheelchair,
Cody was working for him. Sharlene decides she's in, I'll do it for you,
Josie, and for myself. And Vicky, Jake adds quietly. Sharlene has an
idea of how to avoid Grant's suspicion.
There's a knock at the door. Josie wheels Sharlene out of sight and
Gary opens the door. It's Bobby, Jake says might as well let him in.
Jake expects Bobby to gloat, but Bobby says he's here to help. Jake
snickers at Bobby's efforts to get Jake off the hook with Gary (by
assuring Gary that he and Vicky both know Jake to be innocent, the
victims' take ought to count). Gary says they haven't ruled that out, but
there's too much evidence against Jake to let him go without proof. Jake
guesses this is about easing Vicky's conscience so she can let him go and
date Bobby guilt-free. It wouldn't hurt, Bobby admits. Gary's heard
enough, he exits to the bedroom to let them talk. Tell Vicky she can stop
worrying, shouts Jake, I can take care of myself, just like I always do!
He adds, take your best shot, Reno, it won't last; after the Grant crisis
is over it won't take her long to realize you can't give her what she
wants. You had your chance and you failed, Bobby retorts. You're a
drifter, Jake reminds him, with a lousy track record on commitment and
stability; and what about when she needs a surprise, like an impromptu
trip to Paris, say, or to take the kids to Disney World - or a sapphire to
match her eyes alongside her burger and fries? Don't mess with her head,
Bobby warns, exiting.
In the bedroom, Josie and Gary listen in while Sharlene calls Grant
to set up their dinner date. She tells Grant she had, indeed, overheard
his angry phone call about finding Cindy, it made her wonder if what Cindy
said about him might be true, and she wants to meet him for dinner to hear
his side of it - how about Carlinos? She hangs up - we're on, she tells
Josie and Gary.
When they're nearly ready, Gary hands Sharlene a small vial of
liquid, and they review the game plan: she's to dump it in Grant's drink,
when he starts to act drunk Gary will emerge and take it from there. A
knock at the door - Gary peeks out, and lets Carl enter (apparently he's
part of the plan). Carl greets them, and observes Sharlene stick the vial
in her purse. While Josie and Gary help Sharlene with her coat, Carl
secretly removes the vial and replaces it with one of his own. Josie is
still worried for Sharlene's safety. Jake emerges from the bedroom,
dressed as Hal's Fake Jake. Perfect, they tell him, and he strides out
the door, I'll meet you in the car. Josie, still worried, gives her mom a
hug and wishes her luck. Ready to go, Sharlene starts to wheel toward the
open door - Carl "helpfully" hands her her purse and wishes her well.
They all exit [see below] but Josie, who still looks concerned.

BACK TO THE MANSION - Carl returns to the Cory HQ with a small gold
talisman nestled on a folded square of fine cloth. This once belonged to
Ryan, he says, kissing it and placing it in the crib with the other gifts
- and now it's yours. Rachel calls out from the foyer, who is it? Carl
calls back to her, joking about spoiling the baby before it's born. He
darts toward the foyer, stopping short as Rachel appears before him
dressed in a nun's habit and looking like Justine reincarnated! No! he
gasps, appalled.

BACK TO THE COTTAGE - After his talk w/ Jake, Bobby arrives at
Vicky's with a gift in a paper sack - it's two bags of potting soil, for
her seedlings. She's baffled and then bemused, but then she gets it and
appreciates the gesture. She remembers Etta Mae had found some clay pots,
and they repair to the kitchen to repot the seedlings. She gets a whiff
of the soil, and waxes nostalgic about Bridget's garden. Suddenly she
remembers she has a present for him, too; she produces a large elegant box,
he warily opens it and finds a fancy top-of-the-line socket set. She
senses that he's disappointed; he says it's very nice, the problem is what
it says. He points out the discrepancy in their gifts: an expensive tool
set versus dirt [well, when you put it THAT way...]. We're from two
different worlds, he observes: I drive a second-hand pickup, you fly first
class; you're surrounded by family and friends, I'm just me - the problem
isn't tools, the problem is US!

BACK TO THE RESTAURANT - Outside Carlinos, Gary has to restrain Jake
with a choke-hold to prevent him from pressing his nose against the glass
and blowing everything - I'm in charge, says Gary, lay low until I tell
you it's time!
Inside, Grant and Sharlene are seated at a table. He says he was
pleased but surprised when she called, wondering whether Michael and
others hadn't turned her against him. She says she makes up her own mind,
wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Matt enters, greets them in
passing, and approaches Sofia. I need to talk to you, it won't take long,
he tells her. She excuses herself to hand menus to Sharlene and Grant,
then returns to Matt...
Grant insists Cindy's a raving lunatic, you can't believe anything
she says. He warily asks her why she keeps checking her watch ["Sometimes
people really ARE out to get you..."], and he suggests that if she's
uncomfortable here they can always go someplace else, how about my place?
No, she says (a little too quickly). Why not? he presses. As Gary
observes through the window, and Jake waves at him from below, Sharlene
explains that it's a real effort to relocate with the wheelchair once she
gets settled, it's too tiring. He seems to understand, but says she still
looks so uncomfortable. I *am* uncomfortable, what with all the rumors,
she vamps, but I want to be fair, considering our history.
After taking care of a small crisis, Sofia returns to Matt. She
looks so sweet and friendly he can't help smiling, but then he says he has
some things to take care of regarding his family, he just wanted to say
good-bye before he left town. What about *us*? she asks, stunned. I
really like you, he says, but our timing has been off, right from the
start - you have unfinished business with Nick, and I may not be ready for
a relationship right now, either. He promises to return, this is his
home, but for now he has to split. You're the best person I've ever met,
she says, heartsick and trembling. When I come back, you can remind me
about that, he smiles. He kisses her gently, they promise to remember
each other, and he exits. She takes a moment to collect herself after the
shock, then she picks up a tray with 2 drinks on it and serves them to
Grant and Sharlene.
After Sofia leaves, they remark on her strange demeanor, then Grant
offers a toast. Sharlene hesitates, then agrees. Cheers, he says, and
they clink glasses and sip. Outside, Gary is still trying to keep Jake
under wraps. Grant asks Sharlene what she's heard that worried her. It's
not you, she lies, it's my own insecurity... As she babbles along, Gary
signals to Jake, who walks by the window, fiddling with his Buster-neck
collar as if adjusting a mask. Grant, looking horrified, stares at him
through the window, pushes his chair back and stands, then he's drawn to
the window where Jake (as Hal) faces him through the glass, only inches
apart, and mouths something unintelligible to him. While Grant is at the
window, Sharlene nervously retrieves the vial from her purse and dumps the
contents into Grant's drink. Jake sneers at Grant. Still fiddling around
his collar and behind his ears, Jake turns and saunters away. Grant pulls
the slats apart to get a better look, still in shock, then steps backward,
bumping into Sharlene as she's putting the empty vial into her purse. She
gasps, afraid he's seen her, but he has his own problems. He resumes his
seat, shaken, and she asks innocently if he's all right. He picks up his
drink and raises it to his lips, but hesitates as she seems to be staring
at him - or is it the glass? She tries to look neutral. Fade to black...

The tension builds!
