GABE PLANS A TRIP
Lorna/Gabe/Gary/Josie/Blair/Officer Clark

Lorna visits Gabe in his office to say goodbye before he leaves for
Boston. They kiss, and she suggests maybe he doesn't need to go. It's
just for a couple of days, he reassures her, not noticing how upset she
is. As she exits, his phone rings. She observes through the office
window, but can't hear the female voice telling him she's so happy that
he'll soon be coming home. [see below]

Gary, dressing for work, can't find his shirt. Josie appears dressed
in the shirt - and nothing else. Come and get it, she teases. As they
mess around a little, he thanks her for sticking by him when the rest of
the squad snubbed him after reading the newspaper story fingering him as a
snitch on dirty cops. Outside, Blair starts to knock on their door, but
hesitates. When he's finally ready for work, he warns her to watch out
for Blair [funny, I'd have thought his first instinct would be to call her
Jackie - my mistake]. Josie maintains that she can take care of himself,
and she'll just be puttering around the house on her day off. Gary says
he'll call her later, and exits. She turns on the stereo and goes about
her business. Blair watches Gary leave, then cautiously approaches the
door. [see below]

Back at the station, Officer Clark comes to Gabe to request a
transfer, he needs to be able to trust his fellow cops and he doesn't
trust Sinclair. Sinclair is my most trustworthy officer, are you
questioning my judgment? asks Gabe - Request denied. Clark exits, running
into Gary in the doorway. Gabe shuts the door and tells Gary about
Clark's transfer request, then says he's leaving town for a few days and
he's putting Gary in charge [he must be joking! Who writes this stuff?].

Gary fills him in that Cobra isn't dead, she's here in Bay City, it's
Josie's ex-roomie Blair who works for Matt Cory at the paper. Gabe says
they were suspicious about Cobra's obituary [first I'd heard - why didn't
they CHECK IT OUT???], now we know how it got in the paper, and he advises
Gary to start wearing his vest. I'm more worried about Josie, Gary
answers.

Later, after Gabe has left, Gary tries to call Josie from the
captain's office, but no answer [see below]. He opens a desk drawer and
sees a bottle of Irish beer and a glass, which he places on the desk in
front of him. He looks up and spots Clark watching him through the
blinds. He gets up and closes the blinds, then returns and uncaps the
beer. He stares at it, then screws the cap back on and replaces bottle
and glass in the drawer. He tries the phone again...

SHARLENE'S MOVE
Felicia/John/Sharlene/Morgan/Courtney/Cass/Tom'as/Lorna

Felicia watches at John's bedside as Morgan checks on John's vital
signs. Sharlene enters, and Felicia thanks her for coming to get her when
he seemed to be improving. Sharlene is just sorry that it turned out to
be a false alarm. No change, Morgan confirms, and he exits. Sharlene
awkwardly takes her leave, and Felicia promises to keep her updated on any
progress. Felicia wearily returns to John's side.

At the nurse's station, Sharlene tells Morgan, I have to let go. She
exits, then later shows up at Carlino's to pick up lunch for Rita. While
she waits at the counter, a young couple comes up and asks Tony for rice.

He recites the menu; but Sharlene astutely notices the bouquet the girl is
carrying and guesses what they want is uncooked rice, to throw at a
wedding. We're headed for City Hall, they confirm, sharing a kiss.

Anything for love, Tony laughs; he goes off to find some rice, as Sharlene
muses.

Back at the hospital, Courtney tracks down Morgan to confirm their
dinner plans, but he says he has to work. He worries about her going home
alone. I'm fine now that Andrew's gone, she reassures him, you don't need
to be my white knight anymore. [Hey - RYAN's the White Knight, and don't
you forget it!] Lorna comes over to ask how they're doing. Better, says
Courtney; therapy is helping more than I expected, also knowing that
you're a rape survivor too, and Morgan is so supportive. He specializes
in being a white knight, Lorna smiles, and she exits. Courtney insists
they plan a barbecue for tomorrow, no matter what, and she also exits.

Morgan looks like there's something he's not saying.

Cass comes to the hospital to ask Morgan if he and Courtney will come
to dinner tonight, or as soon as they're available. Morgan says he's
working, really busy, and why the sudden interest. Cass wants to
reestablish family ties, also to make Maggie feel more included - it's
been an adjustment, he admits, probably hardest on Frankie. An ambulance
pulls up, and a female jogger is wheeled in on a stretcher. Tom'as, the
attending EMT, reports her condition to Morgan who starts treatment. A
female officer tells Morgan that the woman was jogging in the park when
she was assaulted and raped, this is the second victim this week, no
suspects.

Later, Morgan emerges from the treatment room and tells the cop she
can question the victim now, but go easy, she's shaky [so is Morgan].

Cass, who's been waiting, notes that Frankie and Maggie were jogging in
the park just the other day, maybe the cops will catch the guy. They'll
probably arrest an innocent man, Morgan digs [for obvious reasons].

Courtney comes up and greets the brothers, and Cass tells her Morgan needs
a break, inviting them to dinner at their first opportunity. She accepts
with delight, but notices Morgan is more morose than usual. A patient in
the ER, he answers (with a meaningful glance at Cass) - she had an
accident, but she'll be all right. He kisses her on the forehead and
sends her off to do rounds. What's bothering you, Cass asks him with
concern. Gotta run, Morgan smiles, slapping him on the shoulder and
exiting.

LORNA ON THE CASE
Gabe/Lorna

Lorna finds Felicia at John's bedside, groggily reading aloud from
"Alice in Wonderland." She worries that Felicia hasn't been eating or
sleeping, John will come out of his coma and have to treat you for
exhaustion. I'm afraid to leave him, Felicia admits; maybe tonight I'll
try Carlino's, you can join me since Gabe will be out of town. She
doesn't like the look on Lorna's face - don't tell me you're still worried
he's seeing an ex-wife. Not for long, Lorna responds mysteriously, I'll
soon know if he's the man for me. To Felicia's dismay, she reveals that
she's planning to surprise Gabe by beating him to Boston and being there
to greet him. Bad idea, warns Felicia, it makes you look desperate, Gabe
won't appreciate your spying on him. Our relationship isn't casual
anymore, says Lorna, he'll be happy to see me waiting for him in Boston -
and it's not spying if he has nothing to hide, let's hope he doesn't.

After Sharlene returns to the hospital, she meets an elderly couple
and directs them to the nursery. They tell her proudly that they're here
to see their first great-grandchild. Congratulations, Sharlene whispers
as she watches them go.

She approaches John's room and sees Felicia sprawled across his
chest. She enters and asks Felicia to give her a moment alone with him.

Felicia exits, and Sharlene sits at the bedside. She recalls their first
wedding, how hopeful and naive they were, but forces were pulling them
apart from the beginning. She points to his history in Vietnam, her
childhood trauma, all the secrets they tried to suppress to protect their
love. She holds his face in her hands and assures him she doesn't regret
it, Gregory alone makes it worthwhile - but they aren't the same people
anymore, she finally has a chance to strike out on her own. She says she
needs to puruse her own life, she finally feels ready, and she wants to
put all the hatred and anger behind them and move on. I just wanted you
to know, I'm praying with all my heart for you to get better, she
concludes. She opens the door and motions Felicia to return. As Felicia
resumes her post, John stirs and awakens. Seeing Felicia, he manages to
say hi. Felicia is ecstatic; Sharlene, still in the doorway but hidden
from their view, smiles with relief. John makes a comment about "Alice in
Wonderland," confirming to Felicia's delight that he heard a lot of things
through his coma, also had a lot a weird dreams. Felicia tells him he's
been here for a week or so, she and Sharlene have been here the whole
time. I know, he answers; I don't know if it's true for all coma
patients, but I'm pretty sure I heard everything. Sharlene breathes a
sigh and lets the door shut. She runs into Cass, who asks her about John.

Calm but eager, she asks Cass if he would start her divorce proceedings as
soon as possible.

LORNA ON THE TRAIL
Gabe/Lorna

Boston - Gabe, suitcase in hand, approaches a house. He hesitates,
then rings the doorbell. The door opens, and he enters silently. Lorna
emerges from a nearby bush where she's been hiding, looking upset. She
goes up to the door and starts to ring the bell, then changes her mind and
heads back to the bushes. She turns and sees the silhouettes through the
window, Gabe is sharing a warm embrace with an unidentified woman - Lorna
looks devastated.

JAKE AS PUPPETEER
Matt/Chris/Jake/Donna

Matt enters the newsroom, drops a rose on Blair's desk, and heads for
the office. Chris approaches him with an update on the Cobra-Gary story.

I told you to drop it, snaps Matt. Chris refuses, but he's keeping Matt
in the loop as requested. He produces illicit copies of sealed court
records from Clearwater, insisting that Matt read at least the first page,
maybe Blair didn't tell you everything. BTW, he adds, I was never here,
and you don't know where these files came from. What files, Jake asks
upon his timely arrival. He grabs it away from Matt, there's a brief
struggle, and Matt accuses him of being willing to sell out anyone to sell
papers, no matter who it hurts. They get in another ethical argument, but
Chris tells them knock it off, not again. Jake shrugs and gives the file
back to Matt; as Matt opens it, Jake reads over his shoulder and cackles -
another headline, he gloats. If you print a word of this, I'll kill you,
snarls Matt. He shoves the file back at Jake and exits, as Jake smirks.

Chatting over Jake's desk, Jake congratulates Chris on his good work
digging up the Cobra file. Chris is surprised when Jake doesn't want to
publish the hot story - sex, drugs, money, big-city scandal, what's wrong
with it? Maybe I'm a nicer guy than you think, says Jake - then they both
burst out laughing. Seriously, Jake admits, I like to keep an ace up my
sleeve - and I wouldn't mind Matt owing me one.

Matt goes to Carlino's, takes a table and orders a beer. Donna
swoops over and joins him, concerned about how awful he looks. He tells
her to take a hike, her visits don't exactly lift his spirits. She wants
to know what's wrong, but he repeats, get lost. She advises him to get a
grip, I'm trying to be your friend as we agreed. I don't want you to be
my friend, I already have enough friends, he snarls. Suddenly getting the
picture, Donna warns Matt to be careful of getting involved with Blair
while he's still so vulnerable after their break-up. I wish you and
everyone else would stay the h*** out of my life, he shouts angrily, and
he storms out. He ends up at the docks, pacing around, slamming boxes
around and kicking pilings. He stops and gazes at the water, deeply
troubled.

Back at the paper, Chris tells Jake he's off to City Hall to check
out a rumor about an elected official; while he's there, he'll keep an ear
out for info on the serial rapist. He runs into Donna in the doorway,
coming to talk to Jake. One of the perks of your job, Chris remarks to
Jake, and he exits. He's very rude, Donna observes. He's my star
reporter, and I think he likes your legs, Jake teases. Donna tells Jake
she's worried about Matt, he's falling apart and he won't tell me what's
wrong. At first, Jake asks what do you care, you just got a divorce -
oops, I mean, annulment; but then he gets very solemn. He closes the door
and confides that she's right to worry, if things keep heating up with
Blair, Matt could end up broke and/or dead.  He shows her the Cobra file;
as she reads with horror, Jake hides a trace of a satisfied smile. Donna
is appalled by the report on Blair. She begs Jake to help her get Matt to
quit the newspaper business and escape Blair's dangerous clutches. Don't
worry, says Jake (his nose growing imperceptibly), we'll work together to
do whatever it takes to save poor Matt. [And she bought this?]

AMBUSH!
Blair/Josie/Gary

Blair uses her old apartment key and lets herself in, but Josie is
nowhere to be found. She takes off her coat, unplugs the phone, and
starts snooping around. She pokes around in the bedroom, lingering over
Gary's shirt. Then she checks out the dresser drawers and finds a gun,
which she swipes. She hides in the living room when she hears Josie
coming out of the bathroom. As Josie stands at the mirror brushing her
hair, Blair appears behind her: Hey, roomie, it's been a while, Blair says
tentatively. Josie turns livid and coldly asks for her key back, as she
subtly gropes in the drawer for the gun that isn't there. She blasts
Blair for what she put them through, causing them to break up and nearly
driving Gary back to the bottle. Blair tries to reason with her, but
Josie ignores her and walks out into the living room. When she won't stop
and listen, Blair pulls the gun - Freeze, she shouts, police-style.

[Frankly, at times like this, I kinda miss Bunny Eberhardt...] Go ahead
and shoot, Josie says defiantly. Blair, distraught, puts the gun down - I
didn't come here to hurt you, I came to apologize, to explain, she says.

You came to Bay City to get revenge on my boyfriend, Josie points out, you
moved in with me, how sick is that? Prison messed up my mind, Blair
explains, I wasn't thinking straight when I first got out; it's hard for
me to see you and Gary together, but I just want to get on with my life.

Gary turned you in so you want to ruin his life - what's wrong with you?

sneers Josie. He had a choice, Blair pleads, he could have warned me...

He wouldn't give you a the chance to skip the country, Josie retorts, he's
loyal to his police oath, obviously you weren't. You don't know, Blair
gasps with disbelief, Gary didn't tell you! Tell me what, demands Josie.

Then Josie decides she doesn't want to listen to any more garbage, and she
picks up the phone to call Gary. She sees that it's been unplugged, which
makes her even more furious at Blair's phony apology. She tries to kick
Blair out, even threatens to pick up the gun and shoot her in
"self-defense." But Blair won't leave yet: there's something you should
know, she shouts - Gary and I weren't just co-workers, we were sleeping
together - Gary was in love with me! A worried Gary bursts through the
door, and Blair turns on him in a fury: "You coward," she yells, "why
didn't you tell her we were lovers?!" FREEZE FRAME.

As ever,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
