THE STATE v. NICK TERRY et al.
Joe/Paulina/Tony/John/Felicia/Lorna/Nick/Sofia/Josie/Gary/Mike

The morning after the wedding bash, Joe wakes up to find Paulina
already up and about. She returns with bad news: Sofia's missing. They
go to the restaurant to look for her, but all they find is Cousin Tony
with an ice pack, moaning about his hangover from the reception. Three
guesses where Sofia's gone, Joe growls. Paulina sticks up for Nick and
Sofia, the charges were just a misunderstanding, lighten up. Tony tries
to put his two cents in, but Joe tells him to butt out. He tells Paulina
she doesn't know the half of it, Nick is bad news and I have proof, trust
me. He starts out after them, but Paulina won't let him leave until he
tells her the whole story.

Meanwhile, John and Felicia are having their own morning-after
breakfast at Felicia's. She says she wants to take him shopping for a new
suit, and he agrees but only if he can buy her a new dress. She notices
that he doesn't look well, but he says it's just stress and fatigue from
surgery. There's a knock at the door; while Felicia answers it, John
makes a strategic withdrawal to the bedroom to get his coat. Lorna enters
[see also below], assumes correctly that John is here, and tells Felicia
that his nephew has been arrested. John overhears as he reenters, Lorna
tells him about the grand theft charges, and John leaves for the hospital
to change - when Mike calls, he says, tell him I'll meet him at the
station. He exits.

At the station house, Nick is pacing around his holding cell. Sofia
sneaks into the squad room, skulking around to hide from Josie - until
Gary comes along and pulls Josie into Gabe's office, locking the door and
closing the blinds. [Cheez - these are Gabe's "best" cops? Pretty
unprofessional, IMHO - how do they even keep their jobs?] While they're
busy making out, Sofia rushes over to Nick and gives him her St.

Christopher medal (a deathbed gift from her mother). Nick says he can't
accept it, and he begs her to stay out of this mess, he can handle it.

But she rails against Joe's unfair persecution of Nick over a simple
misunderstanding, and announces her decision: as soon as you're out on
bail, we should run away together. Bad idea, he tells her, she has too
much to lose - but she doesn't care. She's furious at Joe's attitude
toward Nick, he won't stop, he'll use any excuse to bring you down...as
long as I'm with you. Are you? Nick asks with amazement. As long as you
want me to be, she answers. Mike appears at her side: it's all over pal,
he says, I've bailed you out.

John arrives at the station house, and Mike tells him about the theft
charges, that Nick claims he was going to go back the next day to pay the
engraving fee for the rings, and that he'd had no idea the pin he swiped
for Sofia was worth $5000. Don't you believe him? John accuses. Sure I
do, Mike answers, but Nick's on probation, he knows he has to keep his
nose clean to stay out of prison, he should have known better. John chews
him out for being so self-righteous and judgmental, families should stick
together. Tell that to Sharlene, Mike snipes back. He presents the bail
paperwork to Gary, who unlocks Nick's cell. Don't leave town, Gary warns.

He won't even leave the farm, Mike assures him, but Nick says no way is he
going home with Mike. You've been released to my custody, Mike argues,
where else are you going to go? Nick shoots a glance at Sofia, sends her
off to retrieve his personal belongings, then he and Mike get in a real
shouting match. John steps in, tells Mike to shut up, and makes a deal
with Nick: Mike's a self-righteous loudmouth, but neither of us has
anyplace else to live at the moment, so we'll stick together and outnumber
him if he starts lecturing either one of us. Deal, says Nick. You're
welcome, quips Mike.

Joe calls the station looking for Sofia. Gary assures him she's
here, but tells him to chill out, this is a police station, nothing could
happen to her here. [Ha, tell that to Morgan...] Gary hangs up, then
quizzes a passing officer about Josie's whereabouts. You know she hates
it when you check up on her, the cop reminds him. Oh well, sighs Gary,
routine patrol, what could go wrong? [***FLW - Famous Last Words***] [see
below]
Later, back at the restaurant, Joe is musing over the stolen pin when
Paulina sees it and thinks it's a gift for her, it's beautiful. Sorry, he
says, I didn't want to tell you this, but - Nick also swiped this for
Sofia when he picked up the rings. When Sofia finds out, he adds, she and
Nick will be finished. He exits, as Paulina heaves a sigh of bleak
resignation.

Eventually [it's dark by now - how long did that paperwork take?]
Nick and Mike emerge from the station house. Sofia is waiting outside
with Nick's stuff. Nick says he has his bike, he'll meet Mike at the
farm. Mike exits, and Nick thanks Sofia for sticking by him despite the
charges. Always, she tells him; I know you're innocent, you wouldn't lie
to me - so, are we gonna do this, take off together? It suddenly strikes
him that she's dead serious. We don't have to tell anyone, she urges,
let's just go, right now.

SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP?
Lorna/Felicia/John

Felicia fusses over Lorna, who's apparently lost her voice. Too much
wedding celebration, Lorna croaks. She apologizes for interrupting John's
visit, but Felicia says no problem, I'm taking him shopping later on.

Lorna guesses it's for the Romance Writer of the Year banquet. Felicia
wonders if she should go, still smarting from the group snub she got at
Paulina's wedding. Even embarrassing publicity is good publicity, says
Lorna; besides, you have nothing to be ashamed of, and romance writers are
your people, you'll be fine. Felicia doesn't want to go alone, John may
still be tied up with Nick, but Lorna urges her to go anyway and have a
good time.

Later, Felicia encounters a fan outside the mall and autographs a
copy of her book which the fan just happens to be carrying. She stops
long enough to greet John, who's just joined her, and to ask about Nick.

She returns the autographed book, and she and John head to the clothing
store. He models a number of natty European designer suits, joking about
shocking Rita with a ponytail and a pierced earring. He finally settles
on an acceptable dark suit, and Felicia picks out a flowing red gown with
matching wrap. He tells her she'll be a real hit at the banquet, and they
share a kiss before they exit. As they leave the mall, Felicia notices
that John's forehead is covered in sweat, and his face is warm. It's just
M.I.M. - "Men-In-Mall" syndrome, he says, I hate shopping - but it's gonna
be a great night. They smile at each other and head for home.

CECILE ON THE LAM
Cecile/Cass/Frankie/Maggie/Charlie/Josie/Ari

Cecile, towing her luggage cart, shows up at Cass's door. When he
answers, she pleads desperately to hide here from the hitman who's been
following her, trying to get the money she owes but doesn't have. Cass is
skeptical of her claim and tries to keep her out. Please, she begs, it's
just until I can get out of town. She forces her way past him, only to
find "the Winthrops at home" - Frankie, Charlie [looking amazingly like
Alli, after her Soap Opera Aging Hormones - by summer she'll be working
the cash register at Daddy's bookstore and dating Jake], and Maggie. As
Cecile surveys the cozy domestic scene, Frankie asks with weary
exasperation what's Cecile's latest crisis. Oh, just a hitman trying to
kill me, she answers sarcastically. They think she's being her usual
melodramatic self, until they hear a suspicious noise outside; Cass takes
Charlie and Maggie upstairs, while Frankie gets her gun from the high
cabinet. You had better not have brought low-lifes to my house, she
snarls at Cecile, who is cowering in a corner. Cass returns; as he
watches warily from the doorway, Frankie creeps outside and looks around,
but no one is there. She returns and [STUPIDLY] sets the gun on the
planter. Cass urges Cecile to go to the cops, but of course, in view of
all her recent highly illegal activities, she refuses. I won't tolerate
your bringing hitmen around to threaten Charlie and Maggie, Frankie snaps.

Cecile indignantly accuses Cass and Frankie of using her situation to take
away her daughter. Frankie orders Cecile to leave, but Cass draws Frankie
aside to discuss the matter. As they talk, Cecile [predictably] makes a
quiet beeline for the gun, sneaks it into her purse, and slips out the
door. This is exactly why I didn't want Maggie here, Frankie tells Cass,
I knew Cecile would bring trouble, we have to think about our daughter. I
have two daughters to think about, says Cass, but he promises to get ride
of Cecile, we'll talk later about what to do about Maggie. When they look
up, Cecile is gone.

Cass goes out to look for her, but no luck, so he returns. She'll be
back for her bags, Frankie predicts. Meanwhile, they discuss Maggie, who
eavesdrops from the other room. Frankie points out that Maggie still has
Rachel and Carl; it's not the same, says Cass, now that she knows I'm her
father. You want her to move in with us? asks Frankie. If that's what
she wants, Cass answers. [Gee, wouldn't Rachel be a tad curious?] Frankie
worries about the effect on Charlie; Charlie and Maggie get along great,
Cass observes. Frankie: "You really want this, don't you?" Cass: "Yes, I
guess I do - but I'll understand if it's too much for you to handle."

She's family, sighs Frankie, and I've always liked Maggie, but her
mother...no way will I let Cecile move in with us. Cass agrees
whole-heartedly, then he kisses her and embraces her gratefully, as Maggie
silently cheers from her hiding place. Suddenly [FINALLY] Frankie
remembers to put away her gun [anyone remember when Frankie used to have
a
near-genius I.Q.? Not lately...] - but it's gone. Cecile, they realize
with disgust.

Cecile is skulking around town, trying to maintain (for her) a low
profile, when she reaches the town square and sees Ari the Hitman coming
toward her. In a panic, she turns and crashes right into Josie. Please
help me, begs Cecile, that man behind me is a hitman, he's trying to kill
me. But Ari has disappeared. Josie tries to take her into the hospital
(psych ward?), or at least let her call Rachel. Forget it, says Cecile,
don't believe me - but something terrible is going to happen, don't say I
didn't warn you. She runs away, leaving Josie dumbfounded.

WILL THE REAL JACKIE/BLAIR/COBRA PLEASE STAND UP?
Jake/Chris/Matt/Blair

Jake sits at his desk, reading the latest edition of his paper and
brooding over Paulina and Joe's wedding story. Chris bursts into his
office triumphantly and presents him with a folder: Meet Blair Baker,
a.k.a. Jackie Warner, "The Cobra," he announces. He says he traced Gary's
employment record and found that Jackie was one of the crooked cops Gary
had nabbed in that big sting at his last posting, and Blair showed up in
Bay City about the time Cobra was released.. But we ran a story that
Cobra was dead, Jake points out. Gee, answers Chris, which Herald
employee could have planted that? He's about to call the station house to
warn Gary, but Jake stops him. But she's dangerous, look at her rap
sheet, Chris argues. If she'd wanted to kill Gary she'd have done it by
now, says Jake, and if you blow her cover, she'll just split, and there
goes our big expose' - I want to find out what's really going on with her.

Hope you know what you're doing, Chris warns. It's Blair Baker that
should be worried, Jake answers, his wheels turning.

Matt has followed Blair/Jackie down to the docks. He talks about his
childhood memories around here, but she's less enthusiastic about
revisiting her past. She asks if he's remembering anyone special, then
apologizes for bringing up a sore subject so soon after his divorce. They
both agree that after being lied to and hurt, neither of them is ready for
a relationship yet, just friendship. Matt wonders if her former love was
involved in her going to prison, and urges her to have faith, she'll be
able to trust again someday. You made a mistake, he says, but you paid
for it, you've changed, you're not a bad person. My former associates
wouldn't agree, she answers wryly, and they haven't forgotten.

They return to the press room. Matt goes into the office, gripes
that Jake isn't around, and tosses his coat across the desk - covering up
the Cobra file. He exits, then (as Jake watches from the side window),
Blair enters the office, sees Matt's coat on the desk, and takes it to
hang it up. Then she spots the file on the desk, with her old photo
clipped to the front. Horrified, she picks up the photo. Gotcha! says
Jake, suddenly appearing behind her. He closes the door and confronts her
about her secret identities - just a coincidence she ended up in the same
town as Gary? And does his girlfriend know the truth about her roommate?

No reason to tell her, says Blair - have you told Gary? No, says Jake, I
wanted to find out waht's going on first, why haven't you gone after Gary?

I've served my time, she says, I came here to start over - but feel free
to call the cops, only I haven't violated my parole, there's nothing they
can do. No, no cops yet, Jake decides, but I want the truth, or I'll tell
Matt - what a chump, we should really check employee references a little
better. Matt already knows about my past, claims Blair. All except the
Gary connection, Jake guesses. She finally admits she came to get even
with Gary, but since then she's changed her mind. You suddenly find the
church? or a cat? Jake brainstorms, or - AHA! I've figured it out -
Matt's a millionaire, the bribes you used to take must seem like chump
change next to the Cory fortune! It's not like that with Matt, I'm not
after his money, she claims. He's way over your head, Jake goads her.

She gets mad and storms from the office and out through the newsroom,
ignoring Matt as she exits [see below]. Matt bursts into the office and
confronts Jake - what did you do to her, he demands.

DID YOU SAY BAY CITY - OR DODGE CITY BY THE BAY? (Finale)
Blair/Josie/Cecile/Ari/Matt

Blair returns to the docks and pulls out a gun, apparently
considering suicide. Then she bursts into tears and drops the gun - I
can't, she sobs. Josie on Patrol spots her and tries to help, but Blair
sees her and runs off. Josie is about to follow, when she hears a crash
behind her. She goes to investigate, as a gloved hand appears at the
corner of a dockside building, then vanishes. Josie finds a homeless man
who's just tripped over something and injured his leg, and she insists on
taking him to the hospital to get stitched up, promising to return for his
knapsack.

After they leave, Cecile arrives, looking around furtively; she hears
a noise and pulls out Frankie's gun - then (naturally) backs right into
Ari, who easily wrests the gun away from her and points it at her. Your
time's up, he sneers, and the murder weapon can't even be traced back to
me! Cecile begs for her life, for more time to get the money, but Ari's
out of patience. He's about to fire when Josie reappears behind him,
pulls her gun and orders him to freeze. Instead he grabs Cecile, points
his (i.e., Frankie's) gun at her head, and orders Josie to drop her gun.

Josie sets her gun on the dock, shoves it away, then spots Matt behind the
duo as she arises. Calling out to Matt as a diversion, she grabs Ari and
Matt pulls Cecile out of the way. Josie and Ari wrestle over the gun, and
it discharges between them. FREEZE FRAME.

Later,

[FOOTNOTE: The closing credits rolled for at least 3 whole minutes, with
probably 2 of them accompanied by the annoying sound track to a bunch of
NBC prime-time promos (I'm not making this up) - was it just local? Any
one ever hear 2 minutes of AW promos over prime time credits? Didn't
think so... (Wonder if they do the same thing to DOOL?) BUT - no
bitterness here! (Yikes!)]
