*DISCLAIMER - Throughout this episode, people kept referring to something
that sounded to me like "Operation Home Bread." This couldn't be right,
but I couldn't understand what they were saying, and this was as close as
I could get. Mea culpa, correction welcomed... - v*

Here is the update for Another World for Friday, March 8, 1996:

* Nick helps Sofia stage a party for Joe
* Gary and Gabe secretly gather the troops
* Andy buys the farm; Courtney confides in Lorna
* Jake smells a Snake (i.e., starts to catch on to Blair/Cobra)

THE SET-UP
Sofia/Nick/Joe/Paulina/Gabe/Cops/Lorna

It's about 1:30 p.m. From Carlino's, Sofia is on the phone with
Nick, who is at what looks like the Hudson barn. It's all decorated for
Joe's surprise bachelor party. She's fretting that she probably forgot
something, but he assures her every detail is in place. Joe and Paulina
enter the restaurant - Ready for Phase I, Sofia whispers to Nick, and
hangs up.

Meanwhile, at the precinct house, Gabe assembles all the [male] cops
for a last-minute pep talk on tonight's "special assignment" - very
important, top secret. He's totally deadpan, although the cops are
snickering among themselves, obviously something's up. Then he goes into
his office, and finds Lorna waiting. She assures him she wasn't snooping,
no need now that she knows he's not hiding anything from her - now, where
are you taking me tonight? Sorry, he says, change in plans - but he won't
tell her why. He admits it isn't police business, nor is it personal, but
he can't say anymore. He laughs at her attempts to wheedle his secret out
of him, and hands her an envelope with a big bow on it. This will explain
everything, he says, but you have to promise to wait until exactly 8:00
p.m. to open it - if you think you can wait that long. No problem, she
answers. She exits, holding the envelope up to the light to get a hint,
but no dice. Gabe gets a phone call: "Phase I, Operation Home Bread [or
whatever]," says Gary's voice. Roger and out, Gabe answers, then hangs up
with a trace of a smile.

CODE DEAD
Morgan/Courtney/John/Tomas

At the hospital, Morgan is on duty when an alarm goes off in ICU -
Andrew's room. Morgan is afraid Courtney's done something stupid, but
when he rushes in he sees that the life support system is still operating,
the alarm was triggered by a seizure. Morgan leads a team in trying to
revive Andy, but eventually Fax tells Morgan to give it up, he's history.

Courtney, who's been watching, looks dazed. Morgan leads her out of the
room, and she accuses him of suspecting that she'd pulled the plug. He
admits he had a brief flash, but he'd never really believed it. I didn't
want him to die, she says, I wanted him to stay alive and suffer. He
tries to reassure her that she didn't cause this: Andy just went off the
deep end last night, it's lucky you didn't get pulled off the roof with
him, and I'll be at your side to help you get over the trauma - however
long it takes. They watch as Andy's body is wheeled out, and Morgan tries
to comfort her, but she pulls away from him and rushes off.

John is welcoming Tom'as back to work as an EMT starting tomorrow:

all charges had been dropped, and he'd retaken and passed the exam - on
his own this time. Tom'as thanks him for smoothing things over with Rita.

Suddenly John winces in momentary pain, clutching his head [probably MASOF
Syndrome - Mysterious African Soap Opera Fever]. He claims it's just
stress, overwork and fatigue from the Andy episode. Tom'as advises him to
go home early. John agrees, and says see you tomorrow.

Later John is at his desk, still wincing from his headache, but he
welcomes in Morgan who has come to talk about Courtney - he's worried
about her, she's still traumatized. John predicts it will take a long
time for her to recover; when she's ready for counseling, he advises, you
should go with her. He's also arranged for Courtney and Morgan to have a
leave of absence so they can go away together and do some healing. He
warns, Courtney was abused for a lot of years, it may take just as long
for her to get over it. Morgan vows to make sure it doesn't take that
long, thanks John, and exits.

Later, at the apartment, Morgan sits on the couch with Courtney and
presents her with a vacation brochure for Mackinaw Island, encouraging her
to take up on John's offer and get away for a while. She's uncomfortable
with going anywhere, even when Morgan says he intends to come along. He
tries to snuggle up with her, promising he'll never let her be hurt again
- not seeming to notice that she's trying to squirm away from his touch.

They're interrupted when Lorna knocks on the door; he seems mildly
annoyed, but Courtney almost looks relieved. Lorna is hoping for a fresh
quote about the Andrew incident for the hospital p.r. release, but they're
not interested. Morgan's beeper goes off; while he's on the phone, Lorna
asks Courtney for the time - 5:15? Close enough. She open Gabe's
envelope. The note inside says "Trust me," and the tissue-wrapped object
is a watch - he thinks I can't tell time, Lorna explains sheepishly.

Morgan tells the caller he's on for "Operation Home Bread [or whatever],"
then tells Courtney he'll be back as soon as he can, and they'll lock the
door and shut out the world together.  He gives her a kiss and exits;
Courtney breathes a sigh of relief and tells Lorna she's having trouble
with Morgan's hovering. Lorna sees Courtney wince with pain, and notices
bruises on her wrists. Courtney says she got them trying to escape Andy's
clutches. Lorna understands that Andy was a big part of her life, it'll
take a long time to recover; but she regrets shutting people out after her
rape, and says Courtney is lucky to have Morgan by her side. No, I don't,
not anymore, Courtney says sadly. She confides that Morgan wants them to
go away together, but she's not ready to give him what he wants. Lorna
urges her to tell Morgan how she feels, he'll understand; or maybe talk
about it with the battered-women counselor she's been seeing. Courtney is
dubious - how could Morgan understand this? She opens her blouse to
reveal severe bruises on her chest. Lorna is appalled: what did Andrew do
to you last night? she gasps.

YOU MUST BE IMAGINING THINGS!
Josie/Gary/Jake/Matt/Blair/Chris

Josie is on the phone with Blair as she and Gary are getting dressed
for work. She hangs up and says Blair said it would be o.k. if I brought
her notebook by the newspaper office on our way to the station; Gary says
he'll go with her. They discuss their plans to move in together, agreeing
that they're both nervous but excited. As they kiss, Gary's beeper goes
off. Phase I, he says, checking the pager, but he won't tell Josie what
it's about. They leave for Blair's office.

Blair is at her desk, looking at a photo of Gary. She tucks it away,
just as Matt sneaks up behind her with a rose. She worries that he's
being too obvious about their relationship, but thanks him for not firing
her after she revealed her prison record. Trust me, he tells her. He
asks her out to dinner, just as Jake walks up. Matt chews him out for
never being around, but Jake points to the sales figures to prove his
sleazy techniques are selling papers. Blair watches with amusement as
they bicker back and forth, finally pulling Chris into the squabble to
settle whether they should give readers what they want, or what they need?

Chris has to shout to shut them up: You're both right, he says, and you're
both wrong, but mostly you're both nuts. Why did you hire this guy? they
ask each other accusingly. Chris has one more bone to pick: he'd called
in an exclusive last night on Andrew Miller's demise, but no one was
around to approve it for the late edition, so it ran this morning like all
their competitors. I've worked for some top papers, he adds; if this rag
is going to succeed, there have to be some real changes. After some
discussion, he announces that he'll report to Matt for editorial matters,
and to Jake for business matters. They grudgingly agree to the new [yet
inevitable, n'est-ce pas?] set-up. Jake and Chris go off to discuss
Chris's expense account; Jake asks him why such a hot-shot reporter wants
to work for this little paper. I have my reasons, he answers.

Matt returns to Blair and confides that he's glad she doesn't have a
journalism background, or she'd have left long ago. Maybe you'd be better
off, she suggests. He makes her promise to stick around, and she agrees
"for now." She spots Josie and Gary at the newsroom door; as Matt goes to
greet them, she slips away unnoticed - except by Jake.

They go into Matt's office. Josie says they're here to return
Blair's notebook. She's right here, says Matt - but she's gone. Josie
says they're late for work, she'll just leave the notebook. Gary says
mysteriously that he needs a moment with Matt, and tells her to go on
ahead, he'll explain later. With Josie out of earshot, Gary tells Matt
it's time, "Operation Home Bread [or whatever]." Just come along quietly,
he tells Matt, snapping a pair of handcuffs on him and openly ushering him
through the newsroom and out the door.

Josie has run into Jake, and considers leaving the notebook with him,
but then he points out that Blair has returned. He watches as Josie
returns the notebook and offers to introduce her to Gary - now where did
he go? Aw, too bad, must have just missed him, Blair says innocently.

She tells Josie she's been scanning the classified ads for an apartment.

Josie suggests she take Gary's old place, but Blair quickly says she needs
a roommate to share expenses. Josie observes slyly that she's sure Matt
would be happy to raise her salary, then suggests that the four of them
double date sometime. Blair reminds her they're trying to keep their
relationship quiet because of working together. Josie exits, and Jake
comes over to confront Blair, but a phone call interrupts them. It's a
call for Jake about selling Vicky's house, and he chews out the realtor
for not moving fast enough. Then, talking to Chris, they realize that
Matt has disappeared.

Later, Blair is about to leave for the night when Jake stops her. I
saw you go into hiding when Josie and Gary came in, he says, but then you
came out when it was just Josie, so why are you avoiding Gary? Blair
laughs casually, tells him he has a vivid imagination, then exits. Jake
eyes her carefully.

PHASE I, PHASE II
Gary/Gabe/Matt/Cass/Josie/Tibbs/Morgan/John/Tomas/Chris

Gary leads Matt to the back of a paddy wagon, which he opens to
reveal Cass and a bunch (a "cell"?) of police officers. They welcome Matt
in with a cheer, then Gary locks the door and reports to the driver (Gabe)
that it's time for Phase II: The Hospital.

Josie arrives at the station house to relieve Tibbs on duty. Tibbs
tells her Gary's not here, he's on special assignment, and so is Gabe;

sorry, can't talk, gotta go. He dashes out, leaving Josie miffed at not
knowing what's going on.

Gary raids the hospital and returns with Morgan, John, and Tomas, and
herds them into the van along with Tibbs. Chris comes up with his
notebook and demands to know what's going on with all these prominent
citizens (inquiring minds want to know). I don't have time for this, Gary
says, and he opens the van and shoves Chris in with the rest. On to Phase
III: The Ringleader, Gary tells Gabe. They exit the van.

PHASE III
Joe/Paulina/Sofia/Nick

Joe and Paulina are arguing over each other's hideous suggestions for
baby names. In the fray, Sofia tries to creep out unnoticed, but Joe
tells her to freeze. She says that since it's so quiet around here (Don't
remind me, Joe grumbles), she thought she'd duck out a little early. Joe
rags on her for running to meet Nick, and Paulina sticks up for her.

Paulina urges Joe to go home and rest up after last night's Andy episode,
she and Sofia can cover. He refuses (to Sofia's relief); over his
protests, she offers to make him a bowl of minestrone, and bolts for the
kitchen.

Joe and Paulina go back to arguing about names. He rejects the name
Mackenzie Carlino [although Mackenzie McKinnon has a nice ring, eh?]; and
she's appalled by Rocco Carlino (sounds like a wiseguy in a Scorcese move,
she says). On to girls' names - Ashley, says Paulina. Joe hates the
sound of Ashley Francesca - we promised to name a girl after Aunt Franny,
besides she's going to be the godmother. Paulina explodes, I wanted to
ask Rachel! She storms out to the kitchen to join Sofia, as Joe turns to
the bills: "Third and final notice," he reads, now we won't have any heat.

Paulina rushes back in and reports that Sofia's gone. Joe rants about how
she'd lied to him, and Paulina rants about how demanding he is on his
sister. As they continue to yell at each other, Paulina wails that now
they're fighting all the time, like it used to be with Jake. Now I'm like
Jake?!? Joe accuses her. That's it, I've had it! she shouts back. Are
you saying you don't want to marry me? he yells. She's so mad, she
doesn't answer, just storms out.

Meanwhile, Sofia meets Nick at the barn and flips over how great it
looks after all his hard work - I just hope it's not all for nothing, she
moans, the way Joe and Paulina were fighting, and he'll kill me when he
finds out I'm gone! Don't be silly, Nick tells her, you're about to
change his life, Joe will love all you've done for him, how could he not
love a wonderful sister like you? She blushes, then asks him to help her
move a big box - but it's so heavy it won't budge. It's a cake, she tells
him mysteriously, a big surprise, no peeking. She helps him add some
finishing touches, then makes him promise to take pictures since she won't
be able to see Joe's face. If the party's any good, Nick jokes, you might
not want to see the pictures. Just make sure he can walk down the aisle
tomorrow, she warns. He will - we might have to carry him, says Nick.

She reminds him about the rings and tuxes, and thanks him for all his
help. She impulsively kisses him, then exits for Phase III.

Darkness has fallen. Paulina returns to Joe in the restaurant,
miffed that he didn't come looking for her. He says he figured she and
Sofia were off somewhere trashing him. She says she talked with the baby,
who told her she should go ahead with the wedding, and also that he wanted
to be named Huckleberry. Joe reminds her how perfect their first wedding
was before Jake's return ruined it, he wants that for her again. Sofia
peeks through the window to see them kissing and making up, then she trips
the circuit breaker outside. Joe grumbles when the lights go out, and
goes outside to the circuit box - when suddenly he's ambused from behind
and a cover is thrown over his head. FREEZE FRAME.

Hmmmm - I smell - SPECIAL EPISODE?
