* Vicky and Paulina scatter NotJake's ashes in Lassiter
* Sharlene confronts Bailey about their past; both take
action
* Lorna thinks she willed Grant to recover
* Grant tells Billy and Ryan he knows who shot him

The Trip to Lassiter

Vicky takes Paulina to the park where she and Jake used to
play as kids, and shows her Jake's swing. She leaves
Paulina to sit and swing and ruminate over the urn of
NotJake's ashes, while Vicky steps aside to call home and
check on Kirk. She is surprised when Ryan answers, he's
there spending time with his future stepson. Wouldn't it be
a hoot if he grew up to look like you? Vicky says. [Wouldn't
it just?] They talk about their future together, but Vicky
is worried that Ryan could go to prison for saying he shot
Grant. Ryan says don't worry, and that Vicky is safe as
long as Grant stays in a coma. [Famous last words...see
below.] Then Vicky joins Paulina on the swings, elated over
her phone call but trying to downplay it to respect
Paulina's grief. Paulina says it's o.k., be happy, Jake
would have wanted it - he always said you and Ryan were
meant for each other, just like me and him. Paulina asks
about Grant, and is more pleased than Vicky to hear he's
hanging on. She wonders why Ryan was arrested if he didn't
shoot Grant. He was covering for me, answers Vicky, the way
Jake would have covered for you; he's a cop, so he knows how
to make himself look guilty, now our problem is to
unconvince them - then we'll be married, and get my
temporary custody of Kirk made permanent, and then we can be
happy. Paulina gets emotional seeing Jake's old stomping
grounds. Vicky tells her about a time Jake got suspended
for pulling the fire alarm to get her out of a math test,
after keeping her out late watching a carnival pack up; all
I got was an A on the test, and Jake's mother wanted him to
stay away from me but he used to meet me at the swings after
school. Paulina is momentarily testy about Vicky's effect
on men, what she gets them to risk for her. You think it
was my fault Jake died, says Vicky (partially to herself); I
should never have gotten him involved in the baby switch,
but it wasn't supposed to go like this, he didn't want to
lie to you but I made him and now he's dead - you two should
have had a long and happy life with lots of kids. Paulina
reassures her, Jake was driving too fast, it had nothing to
do with you. She says she pictured Jake returning to
Lassiter in a stretch limo for his 20th reunion. Only with
you at his side, Vicky replies. Paulina: "I'm glad he had
you for a friend." Vicky: "I'm glad he had you for a wife."
Paulina offers her hand, and Vicky takes it, as they sit
side-by-side on the swings. Eventually they decide it's
time to scatter the ashes. They stand, and Paulina pours
half the ashes from the urn into Vicky's cupped hands, and
the rest into her free hand. She's grateful not to have to
do this alone, but to be with someone else who thought
highly of Jake; do you think he knew how much I loved him,
Paulina asks. He knew, Vicky answers. Jake's swing starts
to move and creak, and Paulina is so startled she drops the
ashes. Vicky gives her half of hers, but Paulina's real
problem is that she isn't ready to say goodbye to Jake.
This isn't goodbye, says Vicky, it's just something we're
doing for Jake, but you can say goodbye whenever and
wherever you're ready. Paulina accepts this idea, and they
toss the ashes into the air over the playground. Jake's
o.k., says Vicky, as they embrace and head home. In the
empty park, Jake's swing mysteriously starts to swing back
and forth on its own.

Sharlene Confronts Bailey

In the hospital linen room, Bailey greets Sharlene like a
long lost friend, calling her Sharly. He acts delighted to
suddenly remember their childhood friendship in Oklahoma,
and tries to act very convivial, like old home week,
reaching out to touch her arm. Sharlene recoils in anger,
don't ever touch me, she snarls. He ignores her rage and
asks about his old friend, her brother Jason. He's dead,
she snaps. Bailey expresses sympathy, and wonders why she
didn't mention she recognized him - was it because of John's
promotion, I assure you his job is secure. He even suggests
that they and their spouses get together for dinner or
drinks or tennis, he's anxious to see the kind of woman
she's become, despite her long struggle with mental illness.
At this, she angrily confronts him: my illness was all
because of you and Jason, you repeatedly raped me, then you
tried to drown me until I swore not to tell, and I've spent
my whole life trying to recover from that - I refuse to be
silent anymore. Bailey acts innocent, and tries to convince
Sharlene that she's remembered it all wrong, there was no
assault, he'd never hurt her or any other child. At one
point he gets too close; Sharlene scrambles to get away and
he drops his cane. She picks it up and holds it up in front
of her as a shield. She's furious that he's not the least
bit remorseful for what he did to her, but he insists it
never happened, even though she really believes it. She
says she intends to go public with his sordid past, and she
starts to leave, but he grabs the cane back and blocks the
door - I can't let you do that, he insists. He threatens to
sue her for slander, cases like yours are practically
impossible to prove, they get dismissed all the time. You
seem awfully familiar with cases like mine, for a car
salesman, she retorts. [Did we know he was a car salesman?]
He spouts his credits - church goer, community leader,
contributor to dozens of charities - who'd believe the word
of a woman with your history of mental problems over mine,
I'd never hurt a child. They were right, says Sharlene
(Who's "they"? asks Bailey), you're still doing it; you were
sick as a child, you never admitted it to yourself or anyone
else, and over the years you've created this image as a
paragon of virtue but it's all a lie, and I won't let you
harm any more children - how could you stop me, hold my head
under water again? Then Bailey threatens to take away
John's job if she spreads these lies, he could do it with
one phone call. I was wondering when we'd get to that,
Sharlene answers, calm but defiant. It's up to you, says
Bailey. She gives him one last glare, then she exits the
room. In the lobby, she collapses on the arm of a chair to
collect herself. Felicia sees her and tries to help, but
Sharlene is too overwrought to speak. She scurries out of
the lobby; as Felicia stands watching her go, she sees
Bailey brush by her and take off in the same direction.
Later, Bailey arrives at the Harbor Club and finds his
wife at a table guzzling martinis. She greets him with
contempt; he tells her to go home, but she says no, she has
a date with a handsome, dark-haired young tennis pro.
You're not the only one who likes them young, she sneers;
but she's referring to her suspicion that he's fooling
around with his secretary or a new female sales associate at
the dealership. Bailey guesses who her date is with, and
asks if his name is Joe Carlino - he's an investigator after
dirt on me, he tells her, he'd never be interested in an old
lush like you. Unfazed, Madeline guesses Joe may have been
hired to track Bailey by a jealous husband. Bailey warns
her not to tell him anything, or ever see him again, or I'll
cut you off without a cent - then you'll be an old lush
who's also poor, and no one will want you. Now go home, he
demands, and he stalks away.
Meanwhile, Sharlene arrives at the farmhouse; she calls
Andrea [whoever that is] to confirm that Gregory is being
picked up at school. She hangs up, then continues stewing
over her encounter with Bailey. Damn you for denying it,
she says in quiet rage.

Lorna's Obsession

Hovering over Grant, Lorna sees his eyes flutter and start
to open. John is there, and he makes Lorna leave the room.
She reluctantly exits, and runs into Felicia. My love for
him brought him back to life, she says excitedly. Welcome
back, John tells Grant. I made it, Grant manages to say
weakly. John says things are starting to look better, but
you're not out of the woods yet; to be safe, I'm going to
limit your visitors. Outside, Lorna tells Felicia that
she's sure Grant is recovering because of his love for her,
and now that Amanda has left him, they can be together.
Felicia tries to get her to go home for food and rest, but
she refuses to leave - Grant will want to see me, she says.
She returns to Grant's doorway, in time to hear Grant tell
John that he wants his first visitor to be Amanda. Felicia
tries to comfort Lorna, but Lorna is sure Grant probably
just thinks Amanda still has Kirk, and he may need me for
damage control after Amanda's visit. But he fired you,
Felicia tries to remind her. There's no reason anymore, she
answers, now that Amanda's left him; besides, I read him all
my press releases and all the news clippings while he was in
a coma, and he didn't say anything[!], so he obviously
approves of what I'm doing. [Oh, puhleez!] She insists on
going off to write another press release about Grant's
recovery; if I get positive coverage, he'll love me for it,
she claims.
Later, she returns with the press release she's working
on, but she's not happy with it, and she crumples it up and
tosses it. Felicia says she's irritable from lack of sleep
and food, she's only staying in hopes that Grant will ask
for her; don't give up your power like this, for this
destructive obsession. Just leave me alone, snaps Lorna,
stomping away.
Inside, John calls Amanda but she's not home. I left a
message with Maggie, he tells Grant. Then he warns Grant to
expect a visit from the cops investigating his shooting.
That will be all right, I'll be fine with the police - but I
want to see Ryan first, says Grant. O.k., says John, but
don't overdo it. He exits.

The Search for Sharlene

After John leaves Grant's room, he runs into Joe in the
lobby. Joe introduces himself, and fills him in on the
investigation - his conversations with Bailey's unhappy
wife, and how Bailey could be involved in more child abuse
as a volunteer at Crossroads House - Frankie got some weird
vibes from a girl there. He also says they just told
Sharlene, she seemed o.k., and determined to confront
Bailey, but she went to find you first. John asks Joe to
help him track her down, she's probably in my office. They
each scour the hospital, call around, and again run into
each other in the lobby. They discuss Sharlene's
whereabouts, no trace of her anywhere. Felicia, who has
been sitting waiting for Lorna, approaches and interrupts
them. John introduces her to Joe, then Felicia asks what's
up with Sharlene, she just dashed through here a few minutes
ago, followed by an older man with a cane. John covers his
concern, saying he and Sharlene must have gotten their wires
crossed, don't worry about it, but thanks for the info.
Then John and Joe exit to try to track her down. They end
up at the farmhouse, but there's no sign of Sharlene. Joe
tries to reassure him: creeps like Bailey go after kids for
a reason - they're small and defenseless; but Sharlene is a
grown woman, he might upset her but what's the worst he
could do to her?

Grant Tells His Story

Ryan and Billy enter Grant's room; Ryan tries to get Billy
to leave, Grant wanted to see me first, but Billy won't go.
Grant stirs, and Ryan says welcome back, and don't believe
what anyone says, you're still my brother and I'm glad
you're o.k. Grant asks Billy to leave them alone, but Billy
says he can't - Ryan's been arrested and suspended for
shooting you. That's not possible, gasps Grant. Do you
remember what happened, asks Billy. Grant says no; Ryan
insists to Billy that Grant was drunk as a skunk the night
he was shot, he was in a coma for days, his memory just
might be a little shaky. Billy says he doesn't want Ryan
influencing Grant's account of the events; I just want equal
time, says Ryan, the news media will be telling Grant I'm
guilty. Besides, he adds, you've already arrested me and
suspended me, what else can you do, shoot me? He tells
Grant about the gun with his prints; but it was a mistake,
he says, I swear I'll prove I didn't do it. It wasn't Ryan,
Grant tells Billy. Then who did? Billy asks, as he and Ryan
strain to hear his answer. Billy keeps badgering Grant for
an answer. Ryan tries to get Billy to back off until
tomorrow, give Grant time to rest. Billy says no way, I
don't want to give you time alone with him to get your
stories straight. No one tells Grant what to say, Ryan
reminds Billy. He's right, Grant murmurs; Billy insists on
knowing who the shooter was. It was Victoria, Victoria shot
me, croaks Grant. Ryan looks stunned (but not surprised).
