Here is the update for Another World for Friday, February 28, 1997:

* Carl coaches Cindy before she faces the Josie-and-Gary Show
* Sharlene returns to work (at Grand Central Office)
* Vicky reunited with kids in Lassiter; Jake gets an eyeful

PRELUDE

Gary & Josie's flat - Josie wakes up to find Gary sitting on the bed,
poring over the suspicious letter before he goes to the hospital to grill
Cindy (part of his Get-Grant Task Force duties). Josie urges him not to
let work supersede their relationship, Lorna probably wished she and Gabe
had had more time for each other before he was killed. Gary is torn, but
the case draws him back. Later, as they are dressing for work, they plan
a good-cop/bad-cop strategy for interviewing Cindy. Gary exits, but Josie
stays behind to look for her keys. As she combs the room, she comes
across their unused wedding rings in a drawer. She gazes at them
thoughtfully [see below].

Cory mansion - Rachel leaves yet another phone message for Carl,
urging him to put aside his anger and talk to her. Matt enters and
informs her that, against her wishes, he'd gone to Carl and told him to
stay out of her life. He tries to talk her into keeping Carl away from
her and her baby, but Rachel insists she loves Carl and knows he'd be as
good a father to their baby as Mac was for Matt. Matt objects to the
comparison [well, he has a point...], and can't understand how Rachel
could love Carl so much [uh, can you say Blair/Cobra, Matt - HMMMM??].
Carl doesn't deserve to have you or your child, snarls Matt. But Rachel
replies that Carl deserved to know about her pregnancy, and she was wrong
to keep it from him and not trust their love - no wonder he doesn't trust
me. She tries calling Carl again, no answer. This time she rushes out,
over Matt's objections [see below].

HOSPITAL CHAPTER

Psych ward - An orderly brings Cindy her breakfast and morning paper
- only it's really Carl in disguise, to her alarm. He admits he
distracted her guard so he could sneak in for a private chat. He shows
her Grant's photo in the paper, which terrifies her, and predicts that
Grant is no doubt arranging it so that she takes the fall unless she helps
Carl nail him. She's suspicious, but Carl confides that Grant had killed
his son, and that he believes Cindy's account of her dealings with
Gun-Boy. She's sorry to say no one else believes her, but Carl advises
her how to increase her credibility with the cops: be consistent, clam up
if you get confused, and wrack your brain for any more details they can
confirm. She's afraid for her life if she helps build a case agains
Grant; Carl tells her she's not the only one putting her life on the line,
Grant's threatened him, too, and they both have good reason to get Grant
out of circulation. He gives her a gentle kiss on the forehead and exits,
and she looks distressed.

Sharlene's office - Tom'as wheels Sharlene through her office door,
where she's returning to work. The room is filled with "welcome back"
flowers, and she reads the attached cards. One is from Cass - "Break a
leg," it reads, which cracks her up. Another is from Michael. Nurse
Emily enters with a card from the nurses, and there's a huge over-sized
card from Gregory. Emily brings in a large flower arrangement from John -
"A real fighter, don't ever stop," she reads. The nurse exits; Tom'as
helps Sharlene wheel behind the desk; Rita's still on leave so Sharlene is
able to spread out over both offices, but Tom'as insists she only work 2
hours and then take a break. She grimaces when she sees the newspaper on
her desk, with the photo of Jake slugging Grant on the front page. She
scans her stack of messages, and Tom'as eyes her as she finds one from
Grant, which she crumples up and tosses in the trash [about time!]. Carl
drops by (after visiting Cindy), says he's visiting a "sick friend," and
thought he'd stop in and welcome her back to work. She's surprised he's
not giving her another warning about Grant. What good would it do, he
chuckles ironically, no one believes me, not even the cops. He informs
Sharlene and Tom'as that his doctor has ordered him to take some time off
in a warm climate, he's thinking bout a deserted island off the Florida
Keys, maybe I can forget about Grant for a while. He exits, leaving
Sharlene and Tom'as looking puzzled.
Tom'as helps Sharlene use her desk to boost herself up onto her feet.
She's optimistic about her recovery. Josie and Gary enter with flowers,
surprised and delighted to see her standing, even edging her way around
the desk. Tom'as has to go to class, and he gives Josie Sharlene's
crutches and exits. Josie helps Sharlene take hold of the crutches, then
Josie and Gary present her with a bouquet of flowers - the other bouquet
is for a "sick friend." Just like Carl, he was here earlier, Sharlene
notes. Gary and Josie exchange a look, then Gary offers to "give them
time alone," see you upstairs. He leaves, and Sharlene urges Josie to
think about rescheduling their wedding soon - don't wait forever, life's
too short, she reminds her. Josie agrees, even has a bride's magazine
under her arm. She gives her mom a kiss and exits. Outside the door she
runs into some nurse friends; one shows her a new engagement ring, the
wedding is next month. Josie looks thoughtful [see below].
Later, Sharlene is dictating a memo (about improving wheelchair
access to the old wing), when Rachel enters. Sick friend? Sharlene
guesses, but Rachel welcomes her back to work, then says she's looking for
Carl, Paulina suggested she try the hospital. Sharlene says Carl was here
an hour ago - he's not leaving today, is he? Rachel is baffled, and
Sharlene repeats Carl's info about taking a vacation, maybe to the Florida
Keys? Rachel thanks her and exits.

Psych ward (revisited) - Gary is grilling Cindy, insisting she come
clean and tell the truth. I already have, Cindy swears. He accuses her
of trying to blackmail Grant, waving his copy of the letter around. She's
dismayed at how easily Grant could shift the blame onto someone else and
everyone believes him. Gary continues to browbeat her, and Josie enters
and stops him. She takes him aside and confides (just barely loud enough
for Cindy to overhear) that she's sure Cindy's innocent of Gabe's murder,
she loved him, I saw her just after it happened and she was obviously
devastated. Gary hints he has proof right here, which Josie pretends is
news to her. She has Gary back off, while she tries to calm Cindy's
distress, "she needs a friend." Gary, a little calmer, resumes
questioning her about the letter, which Cindy flatly denies writing - but
she's upset to see it clearly has her signature, and even more terrified
to read the contents. Gary urges her don't be afraid, just tell us the
truth - but Cindy says she's sure Grant is watching her, she's scared to
talk. She knows Grant is behind the letter, just like he's behind
everything else - like framing Jake by making it look like Jake planted
the bomb under Bobby's truck. Gary reminds her she's already admitted to
helping Grant before; Cindy figures she wasn't the only one, but can't
point to any more of Grant's accomplices - and insists she never tried to
frame Grant, she was too scared, his people are everywhere. Josie again
asks Gary to back off, and then asks Cindy if she ever signed anything for
Grant? Just Foundation papers, she says - or so he said, but I never read
them. Gary remembers Grant was upset when she'd mentioned the word "mask"
at Gabe's funeral. Cindy, clueless, suddenly remembers that Randy, the
bartender at Sassy's, was working for Grant, he helped me steal Jake's
jacket - also William, Grant's maitre d' at the Harbor Club, was always
conspiring with him. She strains, but can't remember anything else. Gary
says he'll be back; Josie gives Cindy her business card, call me, home or
work, if you remember anything else or just want to talk. They exit.
In the corridor, they agree they believe her story, now they have to
check out Randy and William. They congratulate each other on their good
work, then Gary spots the bride's magazine. Josie asks why he seems so
ambivalent about getting married. This is a bad time right now, he
answers; but she wonders if he's changed his mind about marrying her. No
way, he assures her, but Grant ruined our first wedding, I want the slime
safely locked up before we try again, so we're sure he can't hurt us
anymore. Tibbs comes up and gives Gary the lab report on the letter, the
paper was from Mariano's Art Supply. Gary remembers, that was the name of
the store Bobby found on a piece of paper in Grant's apartment. Why was
Bobby in Grant's apartment? Josie wonders - Don't ask, Gary advises. He
uses the phone at the nurse's station to call the precinct, while Josie
thumbs through her magazine. When he's done, she tosses the magazine on
the counter, tells him she's going back to the precinct, and starts to
exit. He spots the discarded magazine, picks it up, and orders her front
and center. She returns, and he tells her he has a higher priority
assignment for her - back at the apartment, he whispers suggestively. She
grins, he grins, and they exit.

LASSITER CHAPTER

Motel - In the honeymoon suite (which her sons have recently
vacated), Vicky and Bobby start their day after playing poker all night
(she admits she'd learned it as a teen, Jake taught her). She tries to
pick up vibes from Nick and the kids, wondering if she'd even guessed
right that they'd come to Lassiter. The maid rolls her cleaning cart in,
and Bobby spots Kirk's teddy bear on the cart. They grill her about the
owners. She suspects they're here to find the Senator's kid and get the
reward money like it said in the paper, and describes Nick and Sofia.
She'd called the cops, but the couple with the kids had split by then.
Vicky writes down her phone number in case they return for the bear; the
maid hesitates, until Bobby slips her a large bill. She exits, and Vicky
assures Bobby that her kids are still in Lassiter. They head out to
resume the search.

Park - Jake wanders around Lassiter, ending up at the park. As he
sits on the swing set and tries to figure out where Vicky is hiding, he
flashes back to his recent trip here with Vicky, when they'd sat on the
swings and he'd declared his love. Then he'd taken her back home at her
request, teasing her about missing her chance for the vibrating bed at the
motel. A light bulb flashes in his brain - "Vibrating beds!" - and he
dashes off to check the honeymoon suite.
Motel - Jake gets the maid to let him into the suite, and she remarks
on yet another inquiry about the Senator's kid. Jake describes Vicky and
Bobby, and after he peels a few large bills off a roll of cash, she
confirms they were here, stayed the night, left this morning when they saw
the teddy bear. Jake grills her with agitation about the couple; she
admits the bed wasn't messed up too much, I think they played cards all
night. Jake is so elated, he picks her up in his arms and swoops her out
of the room.
Outside, he calls his old schoolmate Jimbo, the Lassiter cop, from a
pay phone - after apologizing for the Christmas tree scam, he asks Jim if
he's been contacted by Vicky and the "con-man cowboy," but no luck.

Park - Vicky and Bobby find their way to the park, no sign of Nick
and the kids yet. Bobby suggests they wander around downtown, maybe
they'll see us, but Vicky wants to stay put, as Bridget had taught her.
He agrees she should stay and rest, and he'll head downtown. She stops
him to thank him for his help and apologizes for dragging him into this
mess. Forget it, he tells her, I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
A couple walks through the park with 2 little girls; Vicky gives them a
second look, then shrugs it off - until she hears the kids begging the
couple for ice cream and recognizes their voices. "Steven? Kirkland?!!"
she cries, staring in disbelief. They run to her arms, we knew you
weren't dead, and they all laugh over their disguises and their adventure
with Nick and Sofia. Nick gives Sofia a friendly squeeze, then backs off.
Sofia tells him she had a good time, and he thanks her for all she did for
them. Bobby produces the teddy bear for Kirk, and Vicky gratefully
embraces Nick and Sofia for keeping her kids safe from Grant. As Sofia
helps Nick peel off his phony beard and mustache, they describe their
adventures - eluding the cop at the motel, setting off the sprinklers in
the warehouse, then resorting to these disguises. Nick gives Sofia credit
for keeping the group together, and Vicky thanks them again for stepping
in to help. She suggests it's time for her "girls" to become boys again,
we'd better go shopping. Nick catches Sofia giving him a funny look, and
she admits she was pleasantly surprised to see him doing something nice
without an ulterior motive.
Bobby frowns as Vicky proposes a whole new wardrobe for her kids, as
well as a duffel bag to keep the stuff in - we have to talk, he tells her.
She tries to stall him, but he's adamant. She sends the kids to catch the
ice cream truck with Nick and Sofia, and Bobby corners her. You can't do
it, he tells her firmly - he could tell by her proposed shopping trip that
she's planning to take the kids on the run again. Why should I go back
while Grant's on the loose, she protests, he could come after Kirk, come
after all of us! Bobby insists Grant has no right to drive her from her
home, to make her and her kids fugitives, force her to leave family and
friends behind... He obviously wants to say more, but hesitates.
Puzzled, she presses him to finish the thought. You need...he continues -
someone to take care of you, to protect you, to be there for you...
Suddenly he takes her face between his gloved hands, and plants a big kiss
on her mouth, wrapping his arms around her in a huge embrace. Always the
master of impeccable timing, Jake arrives at that moment and stops dead in
his tracks at the scene. FREEZE FRAME.

Well, that's the news for another Friday - until next time...
