Here is the *romantic* update for Another World for Valentine's Day,
Friday, February 14, 1997:

* Cass is on the couch with Charlie, reading her a story. A cozy fire
burns in the fireplace. The front door opens, and Morgan comes in,
supporting a very weary-looking Frankie, he tells Cass he found Frankie at
last (hence his recent absence), she really needs you. Their eyes meet,
they're almost too stunned to move. Then she smiles, Cass leaps up and
Frankie stumbles into his arms. I don't understand, he stammers. I don't
remember much, she sobs, we have to figure this out - later. They cry,
and laugh, kiss and embrace, then Cass lifts Charlie to embrace her
mother. Their hearts full of joy, they settle on the couch to let it all
sink in. Happy Valentine's day, you guys, says Morgan with a grin - I'll
make some tea.*

NOW - here's what the WRITERS thought was a romantic episode...[!]

* Vicky's memory returns
* Carlinos celebrate Valentine's Day in their own "special" way
* John and Felicia discuss housing
* Gary and Josie almost (but not quite) remember they're cops
* Gabe gets the message, Grant gets nervous - and Cindy comes clean!

DANIEL'S CABIN - Vicky stirs and awakens, Bobby at her side. He
tells her she's been unconscious for a couple of days. She remembers him
giving her some nasty tea, and also that she'd packed some chocolate bars.
He's encouraged that she's hungry, and that she remembers the tea and the
candy. He pulls up a calendar on Daniel's computer - it's Valentine's
day, he informs her. When it sinks in how long they've been missing,
Vicky bolts out of bed, woozy but worried about her kids. She remembers
the truck blowing up, and realizes that, if she's presumed dead, Grant
won't lose any time going for custody of Kirk. Bobby makes her sit down
and tries to calm her by explaining that they have a plan, Daniel's gone
to call Carl, Carl will find us, but there's a blizzard, it could take a
while. He urges her to eat the soup he's made [sans cilantro]. There's a
stack of tortillas on the table, and she notes that the top one has been
cut in the shape of a valentine. Bobby looks sheepish. Gazing at the
tortilla triggers a memory for Vicky. Bobby notices her change of
expression, but she's not sure how to tell him about this. In the last
few days, I've changed, she says - not the amnesia, or the accident -
something important happened to me - Bobby, I saw Ryan! Bobby hints that
he's had some strange experiences lately, he's in no position to doubt her
word - maybe we see what we need to see at certain times, or maybe it was
a dream. No, she insists, and she tells him about her experience in
spiritland w/ Ryan, we settled some things that were left unfinished when
he died. She'd felt like a part of her was missing, but after being with
Ryan she now feels whole again, happier than she's been since his death.
I also made an important decision, she says; she tells him it was perfect
and beautiful there with Ryan, she didn't want to come back, but Ryan had
helped her see what the future would be like without her, and she decided
to come back to her kids - and to, er, some other things that were waiting
for me...

CARLINO HOUSE - From the bedroom, Paulina calls the hospital to check
on Jake's condition. Joe comes out of the shower and catches her,
confronting her about trying to help Jake escape, he'd seen through the
trick and transferred Jake to county jail. As Joe dresses, Paulina chews
him out for sending Jake to county, and he chews her out for aiding and
abetting, he knows that she knows Jake is allergic to cilantro. He's
angry that his own wife would try to subvert the justice system, and that
she showed him up in front of his officers, esp. the day before he had to
take the captain's ex--- - Omygosh, I'm late, he cries. He fumbles in his
desk drawer, pulls out an envelope and hands it to her, Happy Valentine's
Day, he snaps, and dashes out. Same to you - and good luck on the exam,
she shouts after him. She sits dejectedly on the bed, musing over the
envelope.
Joe gets to the station house, takes a seat with the other candidates
around a table. Two other men are present; one says he's from the
commissioner's office to set up interviews for anyone who passes the test
and wants to make captain; he exits as the other guy passes out the test
booklets and tells them to begin. As Joe works on the test, he keeps
stewing over Paulina trying to snow him about the gazpacho - she chose
Jake over me - how could you do that???

Matt stops by Carlino's kitchen, gives Sofia a gift and a red paper
airplane - read your airmail, I'll call you later, gotta go, he says,
dashing out. She opens the gift, it's a Statue of Liberty charm on a
ribbon. The writing on the airplane calls the Statue "the most incredible
lady from New York - until I met you." Having no taste, she's delighted.
Later, as Paulina and Sofia work in the restaurant, Paulina is
grousing over her disagreement with her stubborn husband. Joe's a cop,
Sofia reminds her, he can't afford to let personal feelings affect his job
duties [*HA - Since when?!?*]. She reassures Paulina that her parents
used to fight all the time and they had a wonderful marriage, just like
you and Joe, you'll work through this. Paulina feels better; then Sofia
(obviously thinking about Nick) asks about her feelings for Jake now that
she's married to Joe. I'll always love and care about Jake, says Paulina,
it's not the same as my feelings for Joe, they have nothing to do with
each other. In the kitchen, Sofia shows her the valentine-shaped cake she
baked for Matt. He'll love it, says Paulina, exiting; the phone rings,
Sofia answers, it's Matt. He has her stretch the phone cord out to the
bar and directs her to a certain wine glass on the shelf, where he's
hidden another gift [I couldn't tell what it was]. He says he's planned a
special dinner for them; what about dessert, she asks. Especially
dessert, he says. She hangs up and considers her now-redundant cake with
a sigh, then picks up the spatula to do some surgery.

Later, Sofia appears at the Cory mansion [while mama cat's away,
etc.]. The living room is all decorated with candles. Matt comes in and
gives her yet another gift, it's a gold chain necklace with an ice-skater
charm (in honor of the night he took her skating and she fell through the
ice - how sweet). One more present - he removes a red scarf from a large
object on the table, it's his sculpture of her hands (which they both
ignore), and he's draped a gold bracelet around one wrist of the
sculpture. He puts it on Sofia, and she apologizes for not having
anything for him (I did, but it was recruited for a needier cause, she
says). I have the best present I could get right here, he says; they kiss
[attempting to portray intimacy and passion, I guess - ah, for the days of
Cass/Frankie, Ryan/Vicky, Jake/Paulina...].

Meanwhile, Paulina finds Sofia's valentine cake on the counter, only
it's been redecorated - the card from Sofia says it's her gift to Paulina
and Joe. The cake reads P.C., J.C., T.L.F. (i.e., True Love Forever).
She remembers Joe's valentine and opens it, he's written how he sometimes
forgets to show her just how much he loves her. There's also a paper
scroll tied with a ribbon. She opens it, it's a pledge to take her
somewhere special each month for the rest of their lives. She dreamily
grasps it to her bosom - I love you so much, Joe, she sighs.
Joe, finishing his exam, picks up the study guide, and a pile of
valentines falls out. He reads one and smiles, it's "from Dante" - Oh,
Paulina, he sighs.

HOSPITAL - John is in his office when Felicia comes in, all spiffed
up in red, looking for a "heart doctor." They kiss and nuzzle, and she
gives him a present, a key ring with a key and a heart charm - now you
have my heart and the key, don't lose it, she smiles. He also has a
surprise for her, tells her he had all his stuff moved back to her place.
OUR place, she corrects him - you're really coming back, that's the best
Valentine's Day present you could give me.  They kiss again happily;
Felicia muses about how easily a relationship can get sidetracked by other
issues, and John agrees they were lucky, they came through it stronger
than ever. He suggests it's time for the next step, he wants them to
decide together what they want in a dream house, and then go out and find
or build it. [Isn't that what Mitch wanted, too??] She says she'd never
thought about moving [that's what she told Mitch] - and she thinks it's a
terribly romantic idea. While they're kissing...

"LORNA'S" HOSPITAL ROOM - Gary sits on the bed with Undercover Josie.
Gabe is stewing that they haven't found Cindy yet, even though he knows
she's here and wants to come forward. Maybe all the cops scared her off,
Josie suggests. Not the cops, says Gabe - it was Grant Harrison!
Cindy, wearing a surgical mask, comes down the hall - a nurse speaks
to her but doesn't recognize her. She takes a drink from the water
fountain as Grant walks by, not noticing her. When she finishes sipping,
she sees Grant's back walking away. She panics and ducks into the
visitors' lounge. It's empty, but there's a woman's hat and coat on a
chair. She put them on and warily returns to the hallway.
Gabe comes out of "Lorna's" room and makes a show of saying goodbye
to "Miss Devon." He runs into Grant, who asks about Lorna and claims he's
her on Foundation business. Gabe doesn't buy it, I think you're looking
for Cindy, he says. Why, yes, Grant vamps, I saw your TV plea, thought
maybe she could use a lawyer - heard from her? Gabe hints that he just
had a nice long chat w/ Cindy - she had LOTS to tell me - about YOU, "old
friend..." Grant tries to subtly pump him, but Gabe just says no longer
will Grant get away with trading on their past friendship to get out of a
tight spot - "I *know* - yeah, I *know,*" Gabe hisses [echoing Ryan's last
words on the trestle after Grant shot him]. Meanwhile, Carl has appeared
down the hallway and has been watching this exchange w/ interest [not sure
how much he could hear, probably not much]. Gabe walks away in disgust,
with Grant desperately calling after him - Wait, why are you doing this,
we're old friends, nothing's gonna change that - Gabe, please! [hee-hee!]

POLICE STATION - Grant skulks over to the police station, looking for
Cindy. The holding cell is empty, so is the interrogation room. An
officer catches him; he casually pours himself some coffee and claims he's
here in case any needy defendants need legal counsel (the cop calls him an
"ambulance chaser"! - hee-hee again). I, uh, saw Gabe's televised plea to
Cindy Brooke, do you know if she contacted him? he probes.

HOSPITAL - Meanwhile, Carl catches up w/ Gabe and confronts him about
sending the innocent Jake to county lock-up (Standard procedure, Gabe says
curtly) while guilty Bomb-Boy runs around free. He accuses Gabe of
letting his childhood friendship w/ Grant blind him to what the slime has
become, believing his lies like Othello believed Iago. If you want to be
captain, they're giving the exam across the street right now, Gabe retorts
[good one, Babe!].
Gary and Josie are busy groping each other on the bed [Bay City's
finest, "on duty" again...]. Gary suddenly remembers something he has to
do and tears himself away, despite Josie's efforts to drag him back to
bed. He emerges to the hallway in time to hear the end of Carl's argument
w/ Gabe. Carl is further accusing Gabe of having a blind spot about Cindy
[true], she and Grant have been in cahoots all along. You need help,
growls Gabe. So did my son, shouts Carl, you're a hypocrite, I won't let
you stand in the way of justice anymore!  Is that a threat? Gabe accuses;
Carl just glares at him and storms off.

CARLINOS - Carl goes over to Carlinos, where Paulina welcomes him
with a warm hug. He asks for information - I know Rachel's out of town,
would you tell me where she's gone? Later, we see him on the cell phone -
"I want it sent out immediately," he's saying, "it's imperative that it
arrive today...yes, New York City - the place where it all began..."

HOSPITAL - After Carl leaves, Gabe is patrolling the hallway, passing
the visitors' lounge, when he hears a woman shouting that someone stole
her coat and hat. Gabe dashes in and gets a description of the items,
starting to put 2 and 2 together. He asks around, and finds a cop who saw
a woman wearing those items heading for the chapel. Go get Adams and
follow me, he says, I'm pretty sure it was Cindy Brooke. He exits.
Cindy enters the deserted chapel, sitting in front and removing her
hat, waiting nervously. Gabe enters silently and approaches her. When
she sees him she leaps up and begs him to leave, he's in danger - not from
me, from Grant - he said he'd kill you like he killed Vicky and Bobby, if
I told you what he made me do! No more killing, says Gabe, I'm wearing a
bulletproof vest, there are cops all around, Grant can't get to us, I
promise. She begs him to believe, she never meant to hurt anyone, the
fire that hurt Lorna was an accident, will she be o.k.? She adds that she
tried to come to him, she didn't know what Grant was up to, didn't know
that he intended to kill Vicky - he made me do things to Jake I didn't
understand - I had to steal his jacket, I had to buy things and get Jake's
fingerprints on the receipts...Grant said, if I didn't do what he said,
that he'd tell you I killed Sara and Sam! Gabe is aghast, but Cindy,
nearly hysterical, swears she didn't start the fire - but she was there,
she watched it spread, frozen, unable to call for help; then, when the
fire trucks finally arrived, she ran scared. She still believes fate
meant for her and Gabe to be together - that's why Sara died, that's why
Lorna was injured - once you realize it, too, no one else will be hurt,
she begs. He bites his tongue, determined not to scare her off until he
gets to the truth.

Meanwhile, Josie [exhausted after 10 straight minutes lying in bed
pretending to be Lorna] is interrupted when Gary returns with a present
for her - call it "art therapy," he says. She opens the box and finds a
little paintbrush and a jar of brown paint, which turns out to be her
favorite chocolate sauce. Care to "redecorate"? he leers at her
suggestively, as she leers back, their work assignment totally forgotten.
Later, she's busy painting chocolate valentines on Gary's face and licking
them off, then Gary demands his turn, and they roll around on the bed.
Cindy comes in and sets the room on fire, then Grant bursts in and shoots
all three of them; Gabe hears the fuss, comes in and finally fires them,
just before Grant shoots him, too, but they're too busy to notice [Just
kidding about the Cindy/Grant/Gabe part].

Back in the chapel - Cindy wants this to be over, but it's too late,
those two little boys have already lost their mother, and Grant could
still hurt you, I'm very scared. Gabe tells her he needs her help to stop
Grant, it's all over, I promise to protect you - I want you to come with
me, I won't let anything happen to you. He walks over to the door and
holds out his hand, and Cindy cautiously takes it, letting him lead her
out. Camera point-of-view alternates between bystander and
Cindy-eye-angle (very cool). He walks her to the elevator and they get
on; he radios his officers to clear the streets, he's bringing Cindy in.
She nearly loses it, and he tells her to hold onto him, it'll be all
right. He leads her out, down the long hallway to the exit, motioning to
the cops to keep behind him. She sees people along the corridors looking
at her as they walk by, but Gabe keeps reassuring her. A wall of cops
greets them outside the door, and parts like the Red Sea on Gabe's signal.
Cindy sees the police station looming ahead of her - then sees Grant
coming out the door and down the steps. He sees the strange procession
approaching him and freezes, with a horrified (deer-caught-in-the-
headlights) stare. Cindy panics again, and Gabe calms her again, as she
locks eyes with Grant, terrified. FREEZE FRAME.
