HERE'S TO BRIDGET
Vicky/Steven/Jake

At an undisclosed tropical location, Steven is taking pictures of
Vicky with an instant camera. He wonders why they have to save all their
photos and letters in a box to mail later, he wants to send his stuff to
Grandpa Michael now. He also decides to write to Bridget, and they talk
about how much they miss her. There's a knock at the door, it's Jake.

Steven leaps into his arms, but Vicky looks disturbed. She sends Steven
to his room to finish his picture and letter for Bridget, then rebuffs
Jake's attempts at small talk - you wouldn't be here unless it was
something bad, just tell me. First he reassures her that Gabe didn't
reveal her whereabouts, I found you on my own. Then he breaks the news of
Bridget's stroke. Vicky is hopeful that Bridget might recover like
Spencer did, but Jake tearfully explains it was a really bad stroke - she
spent the night on life support, and died without regaining consciousness,
I was with her all night and she didn't suffer. Vicky is devastated, and
Jake tries to comfort her that she'll be all right, Bridget made him
promise to take care of her and the kids. She blames herself for causing
Bridget so much stress and worry, but Jake observes that Bridget thrived
on caring for her and the boys. What do I tell Steven, she sniffles.

Tell him she's with Ryan, Jake suggests. What would you say to your
child, she wants to know. He touches her cheek, saying, I would tell her
that I loved her... She gives him a funny look; you got something against
girls? he teases, covering his emotions. He goes over and pours two
glasses of scotch, and they drink a toast to Bridget.

He tells her to hurry and pack to go back for the funeral, it's safe
now that Grant confessed and got locked up. No, she tells him with a
tear, I can't go home. She says she really likes living here for now, the
boys keep her so busy she doesn't have time to think about Ryan. Bay City
is too full of memories, she continues: good ones, like the park, the
Harbor Club; and bad ones, like the police station, the hospital, the
cemetery. You need a break, Jake agrees. More than that, Vicky explains,
I need to focus on the kids and not think about Ryan, at least until I'm
strong enough to remember him without falling apart. You can't run away
from it, he cautions her. I know, she answers - but I never loved anyone
else like I loved Ryan, he's a part of me, and it'll take time - but I
promise I'll be back. Do you ever get lonely? he asks with deceptive
simplicity. As they stare at each other, Steven rushes in after finishing
his lunch, to ask for ice cream for dessert. I have as many men in my
life as I can handle right now, she tells Jake with a sad chuckle. She
goes over to help Steven; while she's not looking, Jake eyes the instant
photos of Vicky on the coffee table, and slips one into his shirt pocket.

Later, as Vicky eats her ice cream from the carton, she thanks Jake
for coming down and asks him to say a word for her at Bridget's memorial,
and to get a spread of white roses and some heather from the boys. Sure
you won't come back? he tries again. Too many funerals, she answers. She
appreciates his understanding, and urges him not to worry about her, but
he says he has to keep his promise to Bridget, whether you like it or not.

They hug for a long time, then Vicky wants to know how he found her. I've
known you my whole life, give me a little credit, he answers. He calls
Steven in and holds him upside down to extract his promise to take care of
his mom, then tells Vicky to take care, and exits.

Vicky sends Steven to get his swimsuit on, then calls room service
for some devotional candles. Moments later, she has Steven answer the
knock at the door - it's Jake again, who motions to Steven to keep silent.

He enters the room, and tells her, "I can't do it, Vicky, I can't leave
without you."

MAGGIE IMPROVISES
Maggie/Cass/Cecile

Maggie eavesdrops from the Cory foyer as Cass and Cecile argue over
whether to tell Maggie that Cass is her biological father. Cass agrees
that Maggie's been through a lot lately, so he'll hold off telling her;

but he has rights now, and his first concern is for Maggie's welfare. You
just want to keep it a secret so you won't lose your access to her Cory
trust fund, claims Cass; but if I decide it would be in Maggie's best
interest, I intend to tell her the truth. He strides out of the house,
not noticing Maggie in her bright pink coat skulking in the corner; but
Cecile emerges from the living room and runs right into her. Maggie
glares at her; what's wrong? Cecile asks cautiously, not sure how much
Maggie might have heard. Maggie snaps that she's decided she wants to go
live with her father. Cecile tries to stop her from calling him, but
Maggie grabs the phone and dials Sandy (in California, wasn't it?).

Apparently Blaine answers, tells her Sandy's on an overseas call at the
moment, call back when it's more convenient. Hurt, Maggie slams down the
phone in frustration; Cecile tries to make excuses, but Maggie bolts out
of the house.

MORGAN GETS SPRUNG
Courtney/Morgan/Sharlene/Rita/Fax/Andy

Courtney visits Morgan in jail. He tells her his bail hearing will
be held within the hour, Cass told him there shouldn't be any problem
getting him released. Courtney gets beeped and has to get back to the
hospital. They kiss through the bars, then she scurries off.

At the hospital, Sharlene approaches Rita about the job as her
secretary. Rita is amazed, asks if she has any qualifications besides the
good sense to dump John. My marriage is none of your business, Sharlene
bristles; but Rita warns her that a hospital is a real gossip factory, and
wonders if she can handle the scrutiny. Not a problem, Sharlene assures
her.

They're interrupted by a cute young guy who introduces himself as the
new doctor, Fairfax (call me "Fax") Newman. Rita thanks him for getting
here so quickly to fill the sudden vacancy, and directs him to the on-call
room to stow his travel bag, tennis racket, etc. in a locker - we'll meet
later for your orientation. He exits, and Sharlene suggests they postpone
the interview. No, Rita decides, let's chat over lunch [see below].

Courtney is munching on a bagel in the on-call room when Fax enters,
introduces himself, and starts to toss his gear in a locker - Morgan's.

Courtney leaps up and slams the locker shut, telling him the locker is
taken, the doctor isn't here now but he'll be back. Oh, the guy that got
suspended, Fax guesses; I'm his replacement. She grabs his stuff and
tosses it in another locker, and he exits. She grabs a padlock out of the
desk drawer and snaps it on Morgan's locker, pacing around in a fury.

When she turns back toward the door, she finds Andrew standing right
behind her. He makes a crack about her and the new doc, then when she
tries to slip by him he grabs her arm and taunts her with the newspaper,
featuring Morgan's mug shot on the front page. As she struggles to
escape, Morgan shows up and threatens to clean Andy's clock if he doesn't
get lost. Andy makes a few more snide remarks and exits, and Courtney
falls into Morgan's arms with relief. As they embrace, Fax reenters, and
Courtney awkwardly introduces them. Fax tells Morgan glad to meet you, I
need you to update me on your former patients, I'm your replacement.

Morgan glares at him and walks out; then Courtney glares at him, and he
shrugs pleasantly.

FELICIA HOLDS COURT
Felicia/Marshall/Lorna/Matt/Nick/Rita/Sharlene/Rafael

A crowd of reporters is gathered outside the hospital, where Felicia
and Marshall#3 are holding a press conference. Nick, Matt, and Lorna
watch as Marshall announces the publication of Felicia's hot new novel,
which is set in a big city hospital. It comes out in a month, beams
Felicia, but Wallingford's has some advance copies. She's thrown,
however, when Matt tosses out a question about whether the book is based
on fact - are similarities just a coincidence, like she claims? Felicia
recovers and continues to finesse loaded questions (mostly from Matt),
explaining that she wanted to go contemporary rather than gothic with this
book, so she went to the source. Introducing Lorna, she continues that
Lorna and her dear friend and sponsor Judy provided enormous insight on
the inner workings of a major metropolitan hospital [major metropolitan?

Bay City? Oh, puh-leeze!] Lorna backs her up: the book and characters are
purely fictional, she assures the crowd.

Just then, Rita and Sharlene [see above] emerge on their way to
Carlino's, and Rita goes ballistic at the media circus. She confronts
ex-husband Marshall and chews him out; your PR director approved this, he
tells her, Lorna figured the hospital could use some good publicity for a
change. Rita just snorts, then barrels up to the podium and tells the
press the event is over, clear the area. Then she turns on Felicia,
laying into her for trying to profit off other people's pain by writing a
novel based on her affair with the Chief of Staff. These are fictional
characters, she tries to tell the leering reporters, but they smell a
scoop and dig for more dirt, as Rita and Sharlene exit in a snit [see
below].

Matt heads for the Journal to file the story; Nick spots Rafael, and
tells Matt he'll be along shortly. Nick catches up to Rafael, angry that
he's still in town. Finish up whatever business you still have with
Cecile, Nick warns, and then get lost. What happened to you, you used to
be so cool, Rafael jabs. Funny how people change, Nick retorts.

Back in Lorna's office, Felicia is distraight that the press assumes
the novel is based on her personal experience. Lorna is amused by her
naivete, and urges her to let the press think whatever they like, as long
as it helps sell books. Marshall bursts in and announces he's just
ordered a second printing, to Felicia's dismay. He's astonished when
Lorna explains that Felicia didn't realize the press would draw parallels
with Felicia's life. It's not based on fact, she protests, remember, I
gave you the outline long before John and I were involved! The more you
deny it, Marshall clues her in, the more they'll believe you're covering
up, so just don't even try. Felicia demands that he cancel the printing
and pull the books off the market; but Marshall refuses to sabotage this
book over nothing; it's a guaranteed best-seller for us, he predicts
gleefully. He's even delighted with ex-wife Rita for inadvertently
injecting intrigue into the press conference. Felicia is appalled, just
grateful that John wasn't around. Lorna tries to convince her that it
shouldn't have surprised Sharlene that a romance writer would write a
romance novel, John should be flattered if readers compare him to one of
her fictional heroes, and the rumors will only enhance interest in the
book. Felicia is finally reassured that things will work out, and
resolves to hold her head high and fight back if Rita attacks her again.

SHOWDOWN AT CARLINO CORRAL
Cass/Morgan/Courtney/Rita/Sharlene

Cass and Morgan arrive at Carlino's; Cass chews him out for going
back to the hospital after his release from jail, you need to stay away
from there until you're cleared. Morgan reports that's he's already been
replaced - by a doctor named Fax (His middle name is probably "E-Mail,"

he quips); he has all my files, all my patients, probably has my locker by
now. No he doesn't, Courtney announces as she arrives; she shows them the
padlock key, then slides it under her bra strap under her sweater. She
sits with them to discuss what happens next.

Rita and Sharlene enter [see above], carping about Felicia's gall.

As they sit to order, Rita reveals that she knows how Sharlene feels,
she's been there herself.  Fortunately I met someone else, she continues;

I'm widowed now, but Lionel restored my belief in love and fidelity.

Morgan spots Rita, and neither Cass nor Courtney can stop him from
rushing over to confront her for her lack of support and for assuming he
was guilty. You did the same thing to John and Tom'as, Morgan snarls,
because your reputation is more important to you than your patients. Rita
answers that she can't discuss this without the hospital attorney present.

Cass zips over, trying to stifle Morgan and apologize to Rita; as
Morgan's [retired] attorney, I formally request that you reconsider your
decision to suspend Morgan, he says. Fine, she replies, he's no longer
suspended - he's fired. Morgan and Cass protest that she has no legal
grounds to fire him; wrong, says Rita, it's a private hospital, and the
Board has given me full authority to hire and fire as I see fit. Morgan
grabs his coat and storms out, with Courtney close behind. You'll be
hearing from me, Cass warns Rita, then he exits. Well, Rita asks Sharlene
ironically, how do you like this job so far?

Rita wonders if Sharlene believes the rumors that she's a heartless
robot. No, Sharlene answers, if you've been through what I have the past
few months, I understand. Your wounds will heal, in time, Rita promises.

Sharlene says she can't predict what will happen when John gets back from
Africa, but right now I just need to support myself. Your resume looks
fine, says Rita - the job is yours, if you're sure you want it.

AW CHARACTERS REDISCOVER SASSY'S
Maggie/Fax/Rafael/Tom'as/Cass/Courtney

Maggie sashays into Sassy's and orders a beer at the bar. The
bartender cards her, spots the I.D. as a phony, and refuses to serve her.

She eyes Fax reading (medical books) at the other end of the bar, oozes
over, and tries to hit on him to buy her a drink. Sure, says Fax -
Bartender, bourbon and ginger...and hold the bourbon. Maggie scowls as
the bartender pours her the soda but won't let Fax pay for it, and he
exits. Rafael is there watching all this, and starts to approach; but
Tom'as has also seen the mini-drama, and he gets to Maggie first. What do
you think you're doing? he demands, as she defiantly takes a sip of her
drink. He insists on taking her out of here before she gets in real
trouble. She reassures him the drink was just soda; then she sees Cass
enter with Courtney, and gets snarky: I'm just fine, she claims, I'm rich,
I'm beautiful, but this place just isn't happening. Rafael watches with
interest as she swoops out, with Tom'as at her heels.

Cass and Courtney come to Sassy's looking for Morgan, but no luck.

They take a table; Cass zones out for a moment at seeing Maggie, then asks
Courtney to go over with him all her statements that she made at the
hospital board inquiry, as well as the board's response, to help him
prepare Morgan's appeal. Morgan's fine, he reassures her, he just went
somewhere to cool off.

TWO CAN PLAY THIS GAME
Andrew/Morgan

Andrew arrives home to his apartment (after a hard day of killing
terminal patients, framing innocent doctors and terrorizing ex-fiancees);

he takes off his coat, then freezes as he senses he's not alone.

Suddenly, Morgan appears behind him, whips a wire around his throat, and
starts to choke him. FREEZE FRAME.

[Question: why is Bay City a "major metropolis" when it comes to the
hospital (which is so busy it can't post a watch on patients on
life-support after 4 deaths), but its police station is so small it can't
manage to keep one officer in the squad room to protect a prisoner from a
psycho like Andrew (or even keep its two "best officers" out of bed
together, even while on duty)? Inquiring minds want to know...]

Back off my "soapbox" (no pun intended) now,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
