It's finally here - the one we've been waiting for: Grant outsmarts himself!

Here is the update for Another World for Friday, February 9, 1996:

* John and Morgan operate on Rita's son
* Yuppies go Japanese; Blair/Jackie/Cobra gets more than sushi
* Nick zeroes in on Cecile's secret
* Vicky turns to Gabe for help (great Vicky/Jake scenes)

E.R. IN THE O.R.
John, Rita, Morgan, Courtney, Lorna, Andrew

John, Morgan, Courtney, and the rest of the surgical team are working
on repairing the damage to Rita's son's aorta from his car crash. Rita
tries to horn in, obviously scared for her son, and second-guesses John's
procedures. He reminds her it's unethical for her to be here and orders
her to leave, but she refuses, asking John to guarantee Chris will be all
right. The surgery continues, and Rita continues to challenge John's
choices. John repeats, please leave, or at least be quiet so we can work.

He compliments Morgan on diagnosing the problem in time to save Chris's
life. There's a tense moment as things go wrong, and Rita gets
hysterical. John orders Cora to get her out of here; watching from
outside, Rita tells Lorna this is the most important surgery I've ever
seen. The crisis is averted, the patient stabilized, and the surgery
completed successfully.

Back in the doctors' lounge, Courtney and John shower Morgan with
praise for saving Chris Madison's life. A little embarrassed, he returns
the compliments, then John tells them to go check on Chris in recovery.

They head for the door, as Andrew (who was lurking by the door) scurries
out of sight. [Gee wouldn't it be funny if Chris was the next
plug-pulling victim?] Rita, suddenly human, stops them to express her
gratitude for their skill, professionalism, and good work. BTW, she adds
as they walk away, I've changed the rotation, you both have the next shift
off, you've earned it. She enters the lounge as they give each other a
delighted high-five.

Rita apologizes to John for questioning his surgical skill. John
graciously sympathizes, he'd have a hard time watching another surgeon
operate on his son, too. She says despite their differences, she was glad
he was the one treating Chris - as doctors, we think we're so powerful, we
can fix anything, but then something happens to a loved one, and... We
realize we're human, John finishes. My son's life is what's important,
she says; maybe we can find a way to fix the rest - uh, budget meeting
tomorrow morning... Go see your son, he smiles. She exits, he takes a
deep breath and sighs.

Around the hospital - Rita visits her son in recovery, he's
surrounded by medical staff and hooked up to machines. John calls
Sharlene and asks if he can drop by to see Gregory. Morgan has one more
patient to check on before he and Courtney can leave; she says she's too
wired to go straight home, and offers to buy him dinner at the Harbor
Club, meet me at the ER door in 15 minutes. Meanwhile - Andy sneaks into
the doctors' changing room, and slips a book into Morgan's locker: "The
Right to Die," in support of assisted suicide.

SILHOUETTES ON THE SHADE
Josie, Gary, Matt, Nick, Blair/Jackie/Cobra, Nick

Josie and Gary go out to dinner at a Japanese restaurant, and get one
of those private rooms with paper walls where you sit on the floor. As
she ceremonially pours his tea, Josie expresses surprise that he was so
willing to be seen together in public. He shows her today's paper, with
the article on Cobra's suicide (based on the phony wire service story
planted by BJC). He says he's not surprised Jackie got blown away, only
that she'd done it herself.

At the paper, Matt congratulates Blair on helping crank out today's
edition, even though Jake and the new reporter were no-shows. She accepts
his invitation to have dinner at Carlino's to celebrate. Nick is working
at a computer, and tells Matt he's pulling together story info for the new
reporter under Jake's orders, but Jake is still missing, said he had
something important to take care of. Matt fumes a little, then he and
Blair exit - how about something different, he suggests, do you like
Japanese food? [Yes, we see this one driving up Main Street...]

Josie is showing Gary how to eat Japanese food, as Blair and Matt
arrive at the restaurant and ask for a private room. They are led to the
room next to Gary and Josie [naturally], whose shadows are visible through
the wall. As Matt discusses what to order, Blair recognizes Gary's laugh
next door and freezes. Gary gets beeped by the station, and exits to ask
for a pay phone. Blair sits transfixed by his voice. Matt brings her
back to reality, and she covers. Gary returns to Josie and reports that
they're needed at the station [see below], and they agree to pick up the
celebration later. They kiss, and Blair again zones out at their
intertwined "silhouettes on the shade."

BUT I *WANT* TO BE A GOOD MOTHER...
Cecile, Maggie, Rachel, Rafael, Nick

Rafael drops in on Nick at the paper, to ask if he's had any luck
getting him an interview. Sorry, says Nick warily, they stopped hiring
entry-level staff last week. Rafael shows interest in Nick's work,
Maggie's abduction story. You don't really know her - or do you? Nick
asks, fishing. Rafael laughs it off - then Nick comments on Maggie's
inconsistent description of her kidnapper: a short, tall, fat, thin, young
older guy with light and dark skin. Weird, Rafael agrees. The only
consistent detail is the accomplice, Nick continues: a woman with a shrill
voice...

Cecile shrieks through the Cory mansion looking for Maggie, who meets
her in the living room. Cecile suggests dinner together, and notices the
house seems empty. Rachel's in her room, and Carl moved out, Maggie tells
her. Cecile of course wants to hear all the dirt, and makes some catty
remarks about the mismatch between criminal Carl and goody-two-shoes
Rachel [she obviously didn't know Rachel in the OLD days before Mac!], it
was bound to fail. Maggie blasts Cecile for taking pleasure in other
people's troubles just because she has no life of her own, and sticks up
for Rachel and Carl. I'm your mother, Cecile protests. What kind of
mother does what you did to me, retorts Maggie. Cecile spots Rachel
entering at the noise and quickly covers, then expresses phony sympathy at
Rachel's plight. It's none of your business, says Rachel, now pipe down.

She stalks out. Carl will come back, Maggie assures a smug Cecile.

Cecile again urges Maggie to have dinner with her, so she can start making
up for being such a lousy mother. Maggie calls her clueless. Cecile
claims she's changed since she thought her daughter was dead, and realized
she didn't know anything about her - your favorite color, favorite food,
best friend, I want to get to know you. Maggie almost gets sucked in,
until the phone rings. Cecile answers, it's Rafael. We have to meet,
right now, the alley behind Carlino's, he demands, then hangs up.

Something important just came up, how about a late dinner as soon as I get
back, she says nervously over her shoulder as she bolts for the door [why
didn't she just tell Maggie it was Rafael?]. Disgusted, Maggie walks over
to the liquor cart and pours herself a stiff drink. I like pizza, Mother,
she tells the empty room, and she chugs the booze in one gulp. Then she
pours herself another...

Cecile meets with Rafael, who chews her out for panicking and blowing
the deal. You sit up there in that mansion like a queen, he says (being a
queen isn't all it's cracked up to be, she observes wryly), while I'm here
on the streets, and rumor has it that Maggie's story is full of holes.

She'd never rat me out, Cecile assures him. You don't get it, growls
Rafael, I need money, like we agreed, or I'll blow the whole scam out of
the water. I don't have any money, she wails, why do you think I planned
the scam in the first place? They don't notice, as they argue, that Nick
has come out to use the pay phone, and listens with interest.

HEY GRANT - SURPRISE!
Vicky, Gabe, Steven, Kirk, Jake, Carl, Rachel, Grant, Josie, Gary

As Gabe arrives at the station, he hears the dispatcher report a
drunk-and-disorderly. He sends O'Leary to pick the guy up, then enters
his dark office. He turns on the light to find someone waiting for him -
no, not Lorna - it's Vicky and the kids! You've gotta help us, Gabe, she
pleads. She tells him Grant is trying to kill her, and begs him not to
make her regret her decision to come to him. Gabe seems receptive, tell
me everything from the beginning. Together, Vicky and Steven spill it
all. Steven reveals the phony wedding, and Vicky describes being forced
to pick up the kids in secret and drive away at gunpoint. He said we'd
never come back, says Steven, but he was acting strange, pretending to be
nice but yelling at Mommy. We stopped to eat, they continue, then we
locked Grant in the restroom and escaped. Vicky takes Gabe aside - Grant
asked me to be his best man at your wedding, says Gabe. I pretended to
marry him, hoping to get him to confess, Vicky explains: Grant shot Ryan!

Any proof? Gabe asks. Talk to Carl, he knows everything, she tells him,
but right now I need protection. There's a commotion out in the squad
room, and they hear Jake demanding to see Gabe. Vicky looks nervous - is
Jake in on it? Gabe asks. No, he's not involved, says Vicky, he just
tends to tip off Grant. Vicky and the kids lay low in the office, while
Gabe goes out to handle Jake in the squad room. Jake wants to report a
missing person: Vicky Hudson.

Meanwhile, at Vicky's empty house, the phone rings. As the answering
machine message plays with Vicky's and Steven's voices, we see the caller
scowling at a pay phone: it's Grant.

Jake is frantic about the disappearance of Vicky and the kids, he's
afraid Grant is involved. Gabe tries to calm him down by coolly asking
for more info, walking past him so Jake will turn and not see Steven
peeking through the office blinds - but Kirk starts babbling loudly and
the jig is up. Jake passionately begs to see Vicky, to see for himself
that she's all right - I've known her since we were kids, she's my best
friend, she means more to me than... He stops as Vicky emerges and,
relieved, he grabs her in a bear hug. Vicky asks Gabe to give them a
moment together, and they join the kids in the office. Jake hugs Steven,
who apologizes for being mean to him lately. Vicky is amazed by his
emotional tirade earlier. I meant every word, he tells her.

O'Leary returns with the drunk man - it's Carl, staggering and
singing an old Irish drinking song. He's ushered to a cell, and O'Leary
tells Gabe he found him near the cemetery.

Vicky tells Jake she has everything arranged with Gabe, she has to
get away - not just from Grant, but from the pressures, and the memories
of Ryan's death, and trying to be strong. My judgment was clouded, she
says, otherwise I would never have risked my life and my kids by letting
Grant into our lives - I know, you tried to warn me. Jake begs to help,
offers to go with her, but she says what she needs most for him to do is
watch over Bridget while she's away. Between Justine's attack, and Steven
turning bratty, and losing Ryan and almost losing me, Bridget's not as
strong as she lets on, says Vicky, you're the perfect man for the job.

Wiping back his tears, he reluctantly agrees. Gabe enters long enough to
tell her everything is ready, then he exits again. Jake wonders if she
can really trust Gabe. Yes, Vicky says confidently, he's finally seen the
truth about Grant. What do I tell Michael and Donna, Jake asks
emotionally. That I miss them, I'll be back as soon as I can, she says.

Call, write, drop me an e-mail, he suggests, trying to lighten the
melancholy mood. [Great scene - those guys are so good!]
Gabe pulls O'Leary off of nursemaid duty for Carl - drop everything,
put out an APB on Grant Harrison, he orders, as Carl listens with
surprise. Gabe assigns Josie and Gary, "two of my best officers" [yeah,
right, when they can stay out of broom closets, beds, and bathtubs], to
guard Vicky and the kids while she packs for the getaway - this is for
Ryan, he says. He has Carl brought to the interrogation room, and asks
him what he knows about Grant's involvement in Ryan's death. Carl is
leery of Gabe's sudden change of heart. Something's just confirmed my
suspicions, Gabe reveals, but I still need proof. You've talked with
Vicky, Carl realizes hopefully. She and the boys are all safe, Gabe tells
him, now what evidence? Relieved, Carl answers: "Tires." But Grant's
tires didn't match the extra set of tracks at the scene, we checked, Gabe
reminds him. Check out Dale's Tires, Carl advises, Grant paid double, in
cash, for a rush job to replace all five new tires on his luxury import
sedan with a used set, right after the shooting.

Rachel arrives in response to a call from the station. Carl's being
questioned, says the cop. Carl is telling Gabe that Rachel is a witness
to Grant's presence at the trestle, she now remembers it all. Rachel
enters, and Gabe asks if she would testify that Grant was there.

Surprised, Rachel says yes; she has a brief flashback, and confirms that
Grant was standing behind Ryan, but I didn't see if he had a gun - Justine
pushed me off the trestle, I was unconscious at the time of the shooting.

Gabe thanks her and exits. Bailing you out is wearing thin, Rachel says
to Carl. Is that so, Carl slurs, bad for the Cory image? She carps at
him, he sasses back, then the officer asks for her signature so she can
take him home. You'd better keep him, she answers with a sigh, and walks
out.

Lorna visits Gabe in his office, he'd lost track of time again. She
brings him dinner - matzoh ball soup, good for what ails you. Then I need
a large bowl, he sighs. It might help to talk about it, she suggests.

It's Grant, he admits, I'm not sure I know him at all anymore - do you
think he's capable of murder? She's thrown for a loop by the question,
and thinks it through aloud; do I think he has Justine's killer instinct?

Well, under the right circumstances, I'd have to say yes, she guesses.

Grant, lurking in the bushes outside Vicky's house, spies through the
window as Vicky scurries around gathering stuff together, grabbing her
passport from the desk. He slips into the house and sneaks up on her from
behind. Going somewhere? he sneers. She turns and cries "Freeze,"

pulling her gun - it's not Vicky, it's Josie in a wig and Vicky coat.

Gary rushes in and twists Grant's arm behind his back: you're under arrest
for the murder of Ryan Harrison...[YESSSSSS!!!] FREEZE FRAME.

Any questions?
