Happy Groundhog Day - I think we've ALL had quite enough of Winter for

one season!

Here is the fresh-frozen update for Another World for Friday, February 2,

1996:

* Maggie plays for sympathy
* Felicia has a BAD day; John is stunned by Sharlene's decision
* Carl and Jake as Batman and Robin?
* Vicky marries Gun-boy, who reverts to familiar habits

YOU LIKED ME BETTER WHEN I WAS DEAD
Maggie/Nick/Sofia/Joe/Paulina

The usual crisis at Carlino's; Sofia enlists Nick to help her run the
restaurant. Nick suggests they should funnel some non-existent funds into
ads so they could get (ANY) customers, while Sofia wonders if Jake is a
bad influence on Nick. Maggie peeks in, sees them tete-a-tete, and
decides to break up the party. She musses her hair, dishevels her coat,
and lurches in out of breath like she just escaped. Nick and Sofia cry
out in appropriate disbelief at undead Maggie, who falls into Nick's arms,
hiding a sly smile. She lays it on thick about her terrible ordeal to
wring sympathy out of Nick, totally ignoring Sofia, who doesn't notice.

Maggie sends Sofia for a glass of water; alone with Nick, she tells him
how much she missed him. I know we had a big misunderstanding, she
claims, but it was thinking about you that got me through it all. He
squirms awkwardly and says something noncommittal. Joe and Paulina enter,
and greet them casually. Nick can't believe how nonchalant they are,
can't they see that formerly-dead Maggie is back among the living? They
laugh - sure, we went nuts, too - when she first came back, LAST NIGHT!

They exit to the kitchen. Nick notes that Maggie conveniently forgot to
mention that fact, and walks away in disgust.

Later, Maggie jealously eyes Sofia and Nick kidding around with
Paulina, while Joe is updating her on the progress (or lack) on finding
her abductor. She says she wants him to drop the whole thing so she can
put it behind her [I'll just bet she does], but Joe says until they catch
the guy he could kidnap some other rich kid -- oops, no offense. Maggie
says maybe she's blocking out some details, like Rachel did, maybe
Post-traumatic-stress-amnesia runs in her family [cheez!]. Joe suggests
they bring in a hypnotist like they did with Rachel. Wouldn't work, says
Maggie, I just have to remember at my own pace [zero mph], but I'll call
you if I think of anything. They rejoin the others. Paulina is being
mysterious about their honeymoon destination, but Joe lets slip that it's
at the Cory cabin. Cabin, Maggie blurts out, I was held captive at a
cabin in the woods - I just had a flashback when I heard the word!

Paulina comforts her over her trauma, then Sofia notices something burning
from the kitchen. She, Joe and Paulina rush off, and Maggie corners Nick
about why the cold shoulder. Because I can't trust you, he tells her,
like your trying to make us believe you'd just escaped. You must have
misunderstood, she claims. Whatever, he replies. But you said you were
sorry we never had the chance to make things right between us, she reminds
him. He's suspicious: I only said that at your memorial service - how
would you know? Um, er, uh, Cecile told me, Maggie covers; she told me
all about the wonderful things all my friends said at my memorial,
especially you. She continues, I'm going to need all my friends to help
me get over what happened. Maybe Sofia will buy your line, Nick answers,
I'd like to help, but I just have trouble trusting you - maybe you should
work on that if you want friends.

Paulina emerges from the kitchen with the others and announces that
it's time to plan a wedding. Joe suddenly remembers he has to inventory
the bar stock, and reluctantly accepts Nick's hasty offer to help.

Paulina invites Maggie and Sofia to be her bridesmaids - Sofia is so
reliable, she tells Maggie, giving Sofia a hug. Maggie rises to the
challenge: great, she chirps, Sofia and I can shop for dresses and shoes
together, I have the feeling we'll soon be best friends! [somebody warn
Sofia...]

PRIVATE LIVES, PUBLIC HOSPITAL
Felicia, Gregory, Sharlene, John, Rita

Felicia is in John's office watching Gregory (while Lorna is trying
to put the moves on Gabe), who confides to her about his parents' breakup.

They both love you very much, she assures him. Sharlene enters to pick up
Greg, and is outraged to see him with Felicia. She sends him out to the
nurse's station to wait. It's not what it looks like, Felicia tries to
explain. Heard that before, retorts Sharlene: you stole my husband, but
I'll be damned if I let you steal my son! She accuses Felicia and John of
planning the whole thing, and proceeds to rip her to shreds, despite
Felicia's denial that she has any designs on Greg. John bursts in to see
what the fuss is. Keep your mistress away from my son, Sharlene snarls.

She accuses John and Felicia of planning to make off with Greg.

Absolutely not, insists John, I was called to surgery so I left Greg with
Lorna. And Lorna had a meeting, Felicia tries to say before Sharlene cuts
her off. Under the circumstances, John insists, I would never leave Greg
with Felicia - but if I ever did, I would have told you. You haven't
exactly been honest with me lately, Sharlene snaps, storming out. John
follows, as Rita happens by (busying herself at the nurse's station so she
can eavesdrop). John insists he's been completely honest with her, this
wasn't Felicia's fault. I hope you both go to hell for what you've done,
shouts Sharlene - then Gregory comes up, upset at the angry words. You
should do what you told me, he says, count to ten before you say anything.

Sharlene, embarrassed and ashamed, gives him a hug and tries to reassure
him. He's right, John advises, count to ten before you get behind the
wheel of a car. Greg asks if he can have some hot chocolate; Sharlene
agrees, John gives him a last hug, and they exit. John turns, sees Rita
glaring at him, and returns to Felicia in the office. He apologizes for
what just happened, but Felicia understands completely, feeling guilty
about coming between father and son.

Felicia leaves a message for Lorna at the desk and tries to leave,
but Rita stops her. She tells Felicia in no uncertain terms that she
heard the loud fight John and Sharlene just had in the lobby, everybody at
the hospital knows what's going on by now. Butt out, Felicia tells her.

John was reinstated here over my objections, Rita warns, I don't care if
he lets his personal life fall apart, but I refuse to let him or you drag
this hospital down with you!

Sharlene and Gregory sit outside to drink their hot chocolate.

Sharlene apologizes for losing her temper earlier. Greg asks if it was
his fault for wanting to visit his dad. Of course not, she reassures him,
it's just a big mess, I don't always understand it myself, but you're not
to blame. John emerges and hears the end of this, then they see him and
Greg runs to give him a hug. Greg sees a friend across the way and asks
to go over and talk to him. After he goes, Sharlene admits that she
didn't believe John was lying, she just went ballistic when she saw Greg
with Felicia. John is encouraged that they can work through conflicts
like this, which they'll have to do for Greg's sake. Sharlene isn't so
sure, deeply disturbed by how she'd reacted. I can't do this anymore, she
tells him, I'm having a hard time suppressing my anger and hurt, I need
some distance to get over losing you. We need help, she continues, we
need a lawyer to help sort this out. No, no lawyers, John protests,
that's not what I want [he should have thought of that before...]. But
it's what I need to get on with my life, she replies; I'll call you when I
find a lawyer I'm comfortable with. [I've always been comfortable with
Cass...oh, you meant, as a LAWYER!] She walks away to retrieve Greg,
leaving John stunned.

DO YOU TAKE THIS KILLER...
Jake/Carl/Grant/Vicky/Judge

After getting cold-cocked by Grant at Vicky's house, Jake shows up at
Carl's door to lambaste him for sending Vicky off with his exotic truth
serum to face Gun-boy - especially to marry the sicko! Carl signals him
to keep his voice down, then Jake demands sotto voce to know where Vicky
is right now.

Vicky welcomes Grant to their hotel suite with hugs and kisses, I
can't wait to be your wife. After his argument with Jake earlier, Grant
is somewhat suspicious: I'm obsessed with you, he admits, I want you, make
love to me right now or I'll know you've been lying to me all along! [But
no pressure...]
Carl offers Jake a brandy and advises him to stay out of it -
although the wedding plans were news to him, Vicky knows what she's doing,
it could be for Ryan's sake. This makes no sense to Jake, but Carl won't
explain. Jake reveals that he just left Grant, who showed him the
marriage license, the wedding is TONIGHT - I told him it was a crock, no
way would Vicky marry him. Carl is alarmed - you didn't tell Grant about
the truth serum, did you? No, answers Jake; but Carl is afraid that
Jake's argument could have made Grant suspicious enough to put her life in
danger.

Vicky sidesteps Grant's ardor by talking about when they were first
married - she'd been torn between Grant and Ryan, but she chose Grant, and
they'd shared some exciting plans for all they could accomplish in
Washington. Grant apologizes for messing things up with his lies and
conniving; Vicky tells him she never stopped loving him, but when Ryan
rescued her she felt like she owed him. After Ryan died, I realized I
still loved you - I have you now, and I'm never letting you go, she says
fervently. He embraces her gratefully, knocking her purse off the bed.

As she holds him, she notices with horror that the purse has fallen open
on the floor, and the gun is clearly visible. There's a knock at the
door; Vicky guesses it's the justice of the peace. While Grant answers
the door, she subtly shoves the purse under the bed with her foot. The
judge notes that they need witnesses, but produces a maid and a bellhop
he's had standing by just in case. They're happy to help out - ready?

Vicky takes a breath: Here comes the bride, she says with a trace of
nervousness in her smile [pre-ambush jitters?].

Jake and Carl agree, the important thing is to find Vicky before she
marries the scum. In a cute scene (great pairing!), Jake calls hotels,
and Carl calls judges, trying to locate the couple. Between calls, Carl
accuses Jake of endangering Vicky by shooting off his mouth; Jake blames
Carl and Vicky for keeping Jake in the dark. Jake finally announces, a
beautiful young blonde and an incredibly pompous groom (bad tipper) are
about to get married at the Bayside Hotel. Carl isn't crazy about teaming
up with Jake, but Jake refuses to stay behind. We'll take my car, says
Carl. Once she's safe, warns Jake, you two got some 'splainin' to do.

"We are gathered together," the judge is saying, "to join this man
and this woman in holy matrimony..." Jake and Carl burst in and demand
the wedding be stopped! Unfortunately, it's the wrong couple. They
apologize and make a hasty exit.

At the right wedding, Vicky rushes through the vows a step ahead of
the judge - I can't wait, she explains. Then it's Grant's turn. He
freezes - I can't say these vows, he says, to Vicky's dismay. Grant takes
her aside and poignantly tells her that the vows don't say enough, he
wants to express what's in his heart, that he feels like he was born
loving her. When Ryan was killed, he stammers, I realized that you and
Ryan were the only people who really knew me - I never valued the trust
Ryan always put in me as his big brother, and I don't know what I'd do if
I lost you again. "I, Grant, give you my life - if you love me, I'll
always live in joy, and if you fail to love me I'll perish...Until death
shall part us - until death," he adds. Vicky is speechless, and the judge
steps in and pronounces them husband and wife. This was destined, Grant
tells Vicky with a kiss.

Back in the car, Jake wants to head for the police station, but Carl
says no cops. Because of your past tangles with the law? Jake guesses.

No, because Captain Gabe is Grant's old buddy, says Carl, he'd never
believe Grant capable of hurting Vicky. I refuse to give up on Vicky,
Jake vows. I'd be honored to have you at my side, Carl says sincerely -
but we have to do this my way, on our own, no police.

After everyone leaves, Grant takes Vicky in his arms, anxious to
start the honeymoon. No, says Vicky, I want us to go slow, to make every
moment special - you open the champagne, while I slip into something
slinky for my husband. Vicky exits to the bathroom to change; Grant opens
the champagne and sits in a chair to untie his shoes - then he spots the
barrel of a revolver poking out from under the bed. He picks it up and
stares at it, and his hand starts to shake.

Jake and Carl drive around from hotel to hotel looking for Vicky, but
no luck. Carl recaps: we know Vicky took Grant to an out-of-the-way
location to seduce the truth out of him... The truth about what? Jake
demands. There's no time, Carl says [how long does it take to say "Grant
shot Ryan"?], we have to find Vicky - Grant is fully capable of killing
her to protect himself.

I'm ready, Vicky calls out from the bathroom. Gun-boy rises, his
hands raised like a freshly scrubbed surgeon. "So am I," he answers
shakily, cocking the pistol in his right hand, "ready and waiting for my
bride." FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
