FAREWELL, "SWEET" MAGGIE
Maggie/Rafael/Cecile/Rachel/Matt/Michael/Paulina/Joe/Cass/Frankie/
Nick/Tomas/Sofia

Maggie still has Rafael bound and gagged in his apartment. She paces
around getting ready for her own funeral, predicting how it's going to go:
grieving friends and family, especially Cecile. Cecile will be so shocked
when I suddenly appear, and spill the beans about how she engineered the
whole kidnapping - it'll be perfect, she burbles. She puts on a black
cloak and scarf, ready to go, but Rafael fusses and struggles, so Maggie
removes the gag. He begs her to let him go, she doesn't need him anymore,
and he wants to be long gone when Cecile points the finger at him (her
word against mine, and she's a Cory). No, I need you to back up my
version, she says - I'll send someone back to release you, eventually.

She replaces the gag, puts on her black sunglasses, and exits.

Everyone gathers for Maggie's funeral. Rachel says she hasn't been
able to reach Sandy and Blaine, who are traveling in Europe, and she's
kept the news from Carl until he's stronger. As they prepare to start the
service, Cass notes that Cecile is missing. Rachel goes to look for her.

She finds her in Maggie's room at the Cory mansion, sitting on the floor
and tearfully going through some of Maggie's possessions. Cecile tells
Rachel she's trying to find something personal to put on the altar next to
Maggie's picture, but she has no idea what any of this stuff meant to
Maggie - I really didn't know her, I missed her whole life, she wails,
bursting into tears. Rachel sits on the floor beside her, cradling and
comforting her.

Mike shows up at the chapel and runs into Matt, who is still hostile.

Mike denies he broke up Matt and Donna's marriage, that was Matt's choice.

Donna used to think I was too young for her, growls Matt, but it's you and
Donna that are being children if you think a simple "I'm sorry" will fix
it.

Nick joins Tom'as at the altar display with Maggie's picture on it.

Nick notes that Maggie was pretty but hard to get close to - although she
and Tom'as had made a good go at it until - until she got recast. [joke]
...until things got messed up, says Tom'as; I keep thinking there was
something else we could have done. We did all we could, Nick tells him.

Sofia joins them, here to honor Maggie and to support Nick. They take a
seat together, leaving Tom'as kneeling at the altar.

Rachel and Cecile show up at the chapel, and Cecile goes to the altar
and places a book to one side. Tom'as recognizes it - the graduation give
she gave him but he gave back to her, Catcher in the Rye, her favorite
book. Cecile greets some of Maggie's friends, who express their sympathy.

She asks which one is Debbie, the girl who called about the service, but
they have no idea who Debbie is.

Maggie arrives and peeks through the window in the chapel door. She
waits in the vestibule, anticipating her grand entrance. The minister
starts the service by saying a few words; he didn't know Maggie, Paulina
tells Joe ruefully. Maggie is about to burst in, when the minister asks
if anyone wants to say anything. I do, says Rachel, going to the front of
the chapel. Maggie stops to listen [wouldn't you?]. Rachel speaks
lovingly about how much Maggie meant to her after Mac died, what a joy it
was to have her living with them lately, and how close Maggie and Carl
were - we'll miss you, she concludes, as Maggie eavesdrops and Cecile
sniffles. Tom'as speaks next, describes how Maggie had helped him get
custody of Luisa and kept him from giving up during the hard times with
Angela. Luisa really loved her, he says; we loved each other, despite how
it ended, and I feel like I let her down when she needed me most. (Then
he says some prayer in Spanish, which I don't understand - translation,
anyone?)
Frankie goes up next, remembers Maggie's spirit and personality, I'll
miss her. She produces a telegram from her cousin Dean Frame, and
announces that Dean is establishing a fund for a competition for promising
vocalists with a cash award to the winner, called The Maggie. Sharlene is
home watching all our kids, she continues, but she wanted me to express
her love for Maggie, and gratitude for all Maggie's help and support in
Sharlene's recovery. Then Nick speaks - she was my only friend for a long
time when I first moved here, he says; when things go wrong between
friends, you always think there'll be plenty of time to fix it, but there
never is - I'm sorry for that, I'll miss her. Maggie is feeling so bad
she starts to leave, but then she hears Cecile start to speak: I have a
confession to make, she says.

Cecile thanks Rachel for giving Maggie a real home, and thanks all
the mourners for being Maggie's friends and for caring about her the way
Cecile never did. I was a lousy mother, she says, I never put her first
as a mother should, I put myself first, and it cost me my daughter; the
only thing she could count on was that I'd let her down, I'd give anything
to have her back so I could change that, I miss her so much... She's
overcome with tears. Maggie is so upset she starts to sneak away, but
accidentally bumps the door. What was that? Cass asks Frankie as everyone
turns toward the noise [I didn't think it was all that loud, but,
IOAS...]. Maggie freezes in her tracks.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE, I'VE CHANGED?
Courtney/Morgan/Andrew

Morgan is giving Courtney instructions for checking on various
patients. As she finishes taking notes, he checks to see that the coast
is clear, then gives her a rose he's been hiding under his lab coat. She
blushes appropriately, and he heads off down the hall.

Later, they are discussing the symptoms of a pregnant woman -
Courtney listens, asks questions, and finally correctly figures out it's
probably appendicitis. Morgan says he'll arrange for her to assist the
surgeon who will perform the appendectomy, then he covertly produces
another rose for her [florist shop in his coat, apparently]. They happily
go off in opposite directions, as Andrew appears carrying a leather
satchel. He glares in Morgan's direction.

Eventually Morgan and Courtney end up working with a patient, whom
they order taken for x-rays. After he's gone, they discuss his treatment,
then Morgan leaves - see you in surgery, he says. Courtney stays to make
some notes on the patient's chart, and hears someone enter. More roses?
she teases - but it's not Morgan, it's Andrew. She cringes in fear, but
he says he just brought some stuff she left behind when she moved out. He
tells her Morgan seems like a nice guy; but she says she didn't leave
because of Morgan, she left because he hit her. Andrew apologizes, he's
in therapy now, he wants to clear the slate, and for her to at least admit
that their relationship wasn't all bad, maybe only 5% of the time. I
wasn't just afraid of you 5% of the time, I was afraid of you all the
time, she corrects him. She tries to leave, I have to get to surgery, but
he begs her to stay and hear him out. I don't expect you to come back to
me, he says, just to remember the good times - it hurt so much to lose
you, knowing it was my fault I'm alone, and sometimes I feel like I can't
face another day without you. He claims he just wants to show her the
stuff he brought - her mug, their photo album, a memento from high school
when he pinned her and named a star after her - they swore their love
would last forever. Courtney's eyes well up with tears. I swear we can
make it work, he says gently, come home with me... She looks at him
sadly, then shakes her head.

Meanwhile Morgan notices that Courtney is missing, but he gets called
to Oncology. Looking concerned, he exits reluctantly.

JUST SPEAK INTO THIS VASE...
Vicky/Grant/Jake/Donna

At the Cory cabin, Vicky turns on the heat to try to get Grant to
confess on tape to shooting Ryan. She checks her hidden tape recorder on
the mantle, while he's getting a corkscrew for the wine. When he returns,
she urges him to get his terrible burden off his chest so they can be
truly happy together. He seems close to telling all, then insists he has
to be sure she really loves him first - make love with me, then I'll tell
you everything, he pants. She tries to change his mind, you'll feel
better once you say the words, then there won't be any secrets between us
[obviously more important to her than to him]. Suddenly Grant gets
suspicious - what's really going on here? She eases his suspicion, says
she could tell something was bothering him and thought he'd feel better if
he confessed. I don't need a therapy session, he says, I felt fine until
you started rehashing that terrible night. You're right, she says,
regrouping - it's just me, I needed to feel closer to you, to know you
trusted me enough to share everything. Later, after we make love, he
promises. They start to kiss passionately, then Jake and Donna burst in,
appalled at the sight. I warned you to stay away from her, Jake shouts,
giving Grant a wallop across the face that knocks him down, and tries to
throttle Grant on the couch. Donna and Vicky pull them apart.

When things quiet down, Donna and Jake insist on taking Vicky home,
but she tells them to take a hike, she and Grant came here for some
privacy. Jake won't budge, and Vicky excuses herself and drags him
outside for a chat. Donna suggests to Grant that he must have drugged the
wine to get Vicky to agree to this tryst. It was her idea, Grant answers
smugly, we've gotten much closer since Ryan's death. Be real, says Donna,
she's still in mourning, there's no reason on earth that she'd turn to you
at a time like this. Grant looks disturbed, as if realizing she's making
sense.

Outside, Jake says he promised at Ryan's graveside that he'd look out
for Vicky. She says she appreciates the sentiment, but she really wants
to be here, she and Grant have gotten much closer since he saved her life,
now leave us alone. No way, says Jake, not until you make me understand
why you're cozying up to your worst enemy. Are you jealous? Vicky
wonders. It's not jealousy, says Jake, it's that this thing with Grant
makes no sense, just look me in the eye and tell me you love him. I never
said that, she hints, I have my own agenda, and it doesn't involve you.

If you have a plan, you can't do it all alone, Jake tries to convince her.

Fine, says Vicky, if I get in trouble, I'll give you a call, and you and
Donna can rush to my rescue in your matching outfits and little capes...

As she's about to go back inside, Donna comes out - you can't be
serious about Grant, she says. As they start to argue, they hear a noise
inside. They rush in to find that Grant has taken a powder out the back
door. Dammit, I was so close, now it's ruined, mutters Vicky, retrieving
the hidden tape recorder from the mantle. She tells Jake it's mood music,
but Donna [she would know] recognizes it as a spy device. You've ruined
my last chance for any...peace, Vicky snaps, stay out of it! She storms
out. Donna and Jake sit and discuss the situation. Donna wonders if it's
possible Vicky really has changed her mind so drastically about Grant.

He's the guy who tried to take her kids away, not a chance! Jake points
out. They figure Vicky must be after something pretty important if she's
willing to sleep with the slime to get it - Jake shudders at the idea, and
vows to find out what's going on.

Vicky tracks down Grant buying coffee from a street vendor in the
town square. She apologizes for the interruption, and suggests they find
someplace private, maybe his apartment, and pick up where they left off.

Grant begs off, says they're going too fast, they should slow down and
make sure they're not just drifting together out of shared grief or
something. I won't change my mind - I'm gonna get you, she says
playfully. He smiles - but as he turns to leave, both their facial
expressions turn serious. FREEZE FRAME.

That's it,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
