WE NEWSPAPERMEN ALWAYS GET TO THE TRUTH
Jake/Vicky/Gary/Nick/Steven

Jake stops by Vicky's house, where Nick is babysitting (Bridget is at
her karate lesson, as a result of being waylaid by Justine). Jake pumps
Nick for info on why Vicky's been avoiding him, she won't talk about
what's going on with her, but Nick has no clue. While Nick goes to check
on Kirk [see Quote of the Day, below], Jake tries to cozy up to his old
pal Steven, but Steven pushes him away - I like Grant better, he
announces, Grant's taking us to Orlando, he promised Mom would agree if I
ask her nice enough. Jake isn't pleased.

Meanwhile, Vicky has let herself into Gabe's office (she still has
the key Ryan gave her, Gabe hasn't changed the lock yet), and she goes
through the case files on Ryan's shooting looking for evidence of Grant's
involvement. When Gary catches her, she says she has the captain's
permission - Captain Ryan Harrison. She accuses Gary and the rest of the
department of lying to her about the investigation. She shows him the
crime scene photo of the extra set of tire tracks, why wasn't I told?

Gary says they checked everyone's tires - including Vicky's - and, yes,
Grant's, no match. He says they have no reason to suspect anyone but
Justine, unless Vicky has hard evidence of someone else. Not yet, she
says, but I'll find it - Ryan's killer won't get away with it. Gary
thinks she's buying into Carl's paranoid accusations of Grant, Grant's an
easy target. No, says Vicky, Justine's the easy target, but Ryan taught
me to go beyond the obvious. Gary accuses her of pursuing this to hold
onto Ryan [well, whatever works!], and letting her emotions cloud her
judgment. Vicky leaves in disgust, and runs into Jake outside the office.

She tries to sidestep him, but he won't take no for an answer. He insists
on buying her dinner, they have a lot of catching up to do. He buys her a
hot dog at the stand outside the hospital (I thought about the Harbor
Club, he says, but I hear it's under new management!), and tries to get
her to confide in him. You can tell me anything, he reminds her, I've
been in your corner ever since we were kids, but I feel like you've been
shutting me out lately. She assures him they're still best friends, and
claims she's just worried about Carl and Maggie, but he doesn't buy it and
vows to get the truth out of her. I have to get home, she insists. Jake
confronts her about having dinner with Grant, and Grant's plans to take
them to Florida, Steven told him all about it - Grant is trying to take
Ryan's place, warns Jake. No one will ever take Ryan's place, she
exclaims, especially not Grant, not after... She stops, and Jake can't
get her to finish the thought. She gives him a big hug, and exits [see
below].

Jake returns to the station and tries to grill Gary about what he and
Vicky were arguing about. He guesses it's about Ryan, but Gary says he's
aware of Jake's snaky reputation, and won't tell him a thing, threatening
to escort him out. I don't care what garbage Carlino's been spreading
about me, Jake reports, I only want to help Vicky - I have a team of
reporters working for me, I'll find out what's going on, with or without
your help. He exits.

Bridget is back home, and Nick is about to leave Vicky's house, but
Jake stops him at the door and pushes him back inside for a confab. Jake
warns Nick that Vicky's in trouble with Grant. Nick again suggests that
Jake's just jealous, Grant's not that bad, he saved her life. Grant's out
for himself, Jake insists, recounting how Grant locked Vicky up in a Swiss
clinic, shot himself and accused Vicky to get custody of Kirk, etc. If
you care about your sister, says Jake, keep her away from Grant. Nobody
can tell Vicky what to do, Nick points out; besides, Vicky's safe -
Bridget knows karate! He exits, as Jake scowls.

NO NEED TO BOTHER THOSE PESKY POLICE
Rachel/Carl/Vicky/Grant

At the hospital, Carl is still unconscious. Rachel sits by his bed,
holding his hand and begging him not to die. Grant enters and offers to
sit with Carl so Rachel can take a break. Carl awakens and pulls Rachel's
hand to his chest, terrified. Rachel insists that Grant leave the room.

She tells Carl she's going to get the doctor now that Carl's conscious,
but Carl begs her not to leave him alone - Grant tried to kill me, he
gasps. Rachel pleads him to drop this obsession with Grant, but she stays
by his side until the coast is clear. She calls in the doctor to report
on Carl's brief period of consciousness. She's optimistic, but the doctor
is more guarded. She exits and runs into Grant. The doctor's with Carl,
I'm sure he'll recover, she tells him, now I have to call the police
(Grant: "Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump...") - to check on Maggie.

Vicky goes to the hospital and finds Rachel. No word yet on Maggie,
she says, but also no word on Grant - he never told the cops he was on the
trestle that night, he lied to you so you'd stop trying to jog your
memory. Rachel wants to ask Gabe about it, but Vicky isn't sure they
should trust Grant's old friend to do the right thing. Vicky says she
found out about the extra set of tire tracks - they don't match Grant, but
I know it was his car, she says: I know he shot Ryan, Justine's last words
fell short of a full confession; he'd kill me or you or Carl if he thought
we could prove it. She asks about Carl - he regained consciousness
briefly, Rachel says, and he claimed - that Grant tried to kill him!

Vicky is appalled, informs Rachel that she found Grant alone in the room
with Carl when she came to visit Carl earlier. Rachel wants to call in
the police, but Vicky still insists the cops won't lift a finger on the
word of paranoid Carl or grief-stricken Vicky without hard evidence - we
have to do this ourselves.

Grant comes up, gives Vicky a peck on the cheek, and asks how Carl is
doing. He's stable, says Rachel warily. Do they know what caused his
seizures? Needle-Boy probes. Not yet, says Vicky defiantly, but you can
be sure they'll figure it out. Grant notes that the doctors have been in
with Carl for quite a while, isn't he getting better? No! say Vicky and
Rachel together; he may never recover, Vicky adds. She loses her temper
at Grant, then chalks it up to stress. Grant starts to leave. Let me
know if there's anything I can do, he tells Rachel. I think you've done
quite enough, she answers pleasantly. Grant heads toward the exit. Vicky
tells Rachel to stay with Carl, she's going after Grant. Rachel is afraid
for her if she's right about Grant, and again urges they bring in the
police. Vicky repeats that she doesn't trust the cops, she'll be fine.

She catches up with Grant, says she's changed her mind, she and the boys
would love to go to Orlando with him.

LET ME TAKE THAT FILTHY CASH OFF YOUR HANDS
Cecile/Rafael/Maggie/Gabe/Joe/Cass/Frankie/Paulina

Maggie has escaped from the cabin, and overhears Cecile and Rafael
arguing outside about her kidnapping. Rafael says he's taken all the
risks and expects to be paid. Cecile tries to convince him that it's too
dangerous, the cops are on the trail and the money is marked and
booby-trapped with a dye-bomb, it's time to cut their losses and release
Maggie before they get caught. Maggie is devastated. Rafael threatens to
make trouble for Cecile - if he gets caught, he'll bring Cecile down with
him, he's sure Maggie would believe him. Please don't tell her, Cecile
begs.

Paulina arrives at the mansion; Joe and Gabe tell her they're ready
to make the ransom drop for Maggie, but Cecile has disappeared. Cass and
Frankie report they can't find her either. Gabe is afraid she's gone off
to rescue Maggie on her own. He calls Gary at the station, tells him to
have patrol cars standing by for a possible APB on Cecile if she doesn't
show up soon. Cass still figures she just went out for a walk, but Gabe
checks with his men, they've searched the grounds, no sign of her. Joe
reports that Carl's car is missing. They wonder if Cecile would have gone
to confront the kidnapper without the money, Frankie admits Cecile is
crafty enough to elude a police roadblock [plenty of experience, no
doubt]. Could be a deadly mistake, Gabe warns. Frankie tells Cass and
Paulina she's had a funny feeling about this, but it's probably nothing,
just a result of the tension.

As the cops prepare to issue an APB for Cecile, Paulina gets woozy
and Joe helps her to the couch. She says she's worried about Maggie, they
were starting to become close, she was just asking for my advice on
choosing between two guys - I told her not to pick either one, to just be
on her own for a while. Cass sees Frankie staring at the phone - I
already called home to check on Charlie, he tells her. Suddenly Cecile
walks in - Where the hell were you, Cass demands, and Gabe echoes the
question. Cecile claims she just went for a walk. When they confront her
about Carl's car, she "confesses" that she considered going to find the
kidnapper, but thought better of it and changed her mind. Gabe orders his
men into position around the drop site while they wait for the criminal to
call back. Paulina sits Cecile down and gives her a drink of water.

Frankie sends Cass over to sit with her; Cass assures Cecile, Maggie will
be found, and whoever is responsible will be sent away for a long, long
time. Hearing this, Cecile passes out and slips off her chair onto the
floor. They revive her, and Gabe says they're ready for the drop. Cecile
states that Maggie is just fine. Gabe agrees, she's safe until the
kidnapper gets his payoff. They're usually in it for the money, Joe adds,
their greed always trips them up. What will happen to the marked money
when it's over? Cecile wonders. We'll handle that at the station, Gabe
answers. He assures her that Maggie will be back with them soon, but
justice will be swift and severe for the kidnapper. They all watch the
clock, but the kidnapper doesn't call back. Maybe he gave up and left
town, Cecile suggests. Don't worry, I've set up roadblocks if he tries to
get away, says Gabe. Now, aren't you glad we involved the police? Cass
asks Cecile, we'll get Maggie back and nail the kidnappers, one way or
another.

MUST BE GENETIC
Maggie/Rafael

After his argument with Cecile, Rafael returns to the cabin, but
Maggie's gone. After a quick search, he curses in disgust and makes his
exit. He returns to his apartment in town, and starts packing up to skip
out. There's a knock at the door - he opens it, expecting Cecile, but
it's Maggie. She enters and tosses him his wallet - I can snoop, too,
"Rafael," she tells him. He tells her to get out, but she says she has a
few things to settle first. She grabs his gun off the bed, empties out
the bullets, and gives it back to him. I know you're not going to kill
me, it wasn't part of your plan - you're working with my mother, she
shrieks, starting to pound on him in a fury. He wards off her blows, and
denies her accusation, but she says she overheard them talking in the
woods. It's over, just go home, he tells her. She laughs ironically - To
my loving mother? He defends Cecile, she made sure nothing bad would
happen to you. I was terrified of being raped and murdered, that's pretty
bad, she points out. They hear sirens outside, and Rafael panics. Now
you're the one who's trapped, Maggie gloats. Rafael isn't about to hang
around to get arrested, and he starts to duck out the window, then sees
the police cars pass by and continue on their way. Having you arrested
would be too easy, says Maggie - you and my mother aren't getting off that
easily, Mother's about to go through the same hell I just did, and you're
going to help me! FREEZE FRAME.

* Quote of the Day: NICK (hearing Kirkland crying): "I was sure Kirkland

was asleep - I figured three shots of tequila would put the kid down."
