KIDNAPPING IS SUCH A CHORE...
Maggie/Rafael

Maggie has gotten Rafael's gun, and points it at him, ordering him to
get undressed (like she had to before). She grabs his clothes and starts
to make a run for the door, but he convinces her that the road is miles
from here, she'd freeze to death, and he's hidden the car keys. She
threatens to shoot him, but he calls her bluff: I know all about you,
Marguerite, he mocks her [now, where would he get "Marguerite," hmmmm?],
you're a spoiled rich girl who likes to mix it up with bad boys, but you'd
never shoot me. She wonders how he knows so much about her; he starts
walking toward her, and she pulls the trigger. He grabs his chest and
moans, then he flops on the bed laughing, the gun wasn't loaded. He grabs
the gun away from her, pulls out a baggie of bullets, and loads the gun.

Maggie sinks onto the couch, wailing in frustration - why does this always
happen, why does everyone hate me? [Huh?] He even starts to feel sorry for
her, but she pulls away. Cheer up, it'll all be over soon, your family
just got the note, he says soothingly. She gets suspicious: why are you
being nice to me, how did you know to buy all my favorite junk foods, how
did you know my exact size for all these clothes you gave me - what's
going on here? [Exactly.]

COPS ON THE JOB
Cecile/Cass/Gabe/Tom'as/Frankie/Joe

Cecile, who's dragged Cass down to the station to file a missing
person report on Maggie with Gabe, reads the ransom note that Tom'as has
brought from the Cory mansion. It says they want $1 million, and no cops
or the chick disappears, also there's a photo of her. Gabe sends the note
to forensics to dust for prints (after Cecile's manhandled it), and Tom'as
tries to describe the guy he saw at the mansion who dropped the letter at
the door and took off in a dark car.

Frankie arrives and agrees when Gabe asks her to stay and call around
to some of Maggie's friends, Tom'as provides her with a list he's been
jotting down. Cecile weeps all over Frankie, you're so generous to help
me when I've been so nasty to you, you're so good and I'm so bad, no
wonder Cass married you... Frankie hugs her comfortingly, but she and
Cass exchange puzzled expressions at this uncharacteristic behavior.

Tom'as remembers he still has Maggie's graduation picture in his wallet,
and hands it over to Gabe to be copied and distributed. Cecile remembers
that Tom'as and Maggie just broke up - and, hey, it was Tom'as who SAYS he
found the ransom note - but nobody really listens to her. YOU sent ME to
the mansion, Tom'as reminds her, besides, the break-up was my idea, it was
Maggie who was upset over it. Gabe asks Tom'as to hang around - not as a
suspect but as a witness - and see if there's anything else he can think
of. Cecile worries about involving the cops, it might tick off the
kidnappers, but Gabe assures her her chances are better with the cops than
without them, they'll be tapping the phone and watching the mansion. He
calls in Joe [see below], he wants his best detective to supervise the
operation. Now, where can you get the money? Gabe asks Cecile. She hems
and haws and avoids the obvious, until Cass finally has to be the one to
suggest Rachel - she'd do anything for Maggie. But she hates me, wails
Cecile, and what if something went wrong and she didn't get her money
back, I couldn't possibly ask her...oh, Cass, would you please ask her for
me, please-please-pleeeeeeeease?!

WE BELIEVE IN LOOOOOOONG ENGAGEMENTS...
Sofia/Nick/Joe/Paulina/Jake/Michael/Aunt Francesca

Nick, Sofia, Joe & Paulina are just about ready for Aunt Frannie to
arrive, for the phony engagement dinner they're staging so Sofia won't
have to go back to New York. At Nick's request, Jake arrives to bail him
out if needed; Nick nervously asks Jake to clue him in on how to "look
engaged." Jake gives him a few pointers, using Sofia as the subject,
finally just tells him concentrate on her beautiful eyes, it's all the
inspiration you'll need - and NEVER let another guy this close to her
again! What could go wrong? Nick is the first to notice: the "father of
the groom" (Michael) shows up with his date for dinner! Joe is livid to
see Jake there, but it's too late - Frannie has arrived.

With Mike and Jake at nearby tables, the dinner starts: Frannie makes
a series of pointed digs aimed at Paulina's extramarital pregnancy, then
wants to know how Nick intends to support her niece. Jake leaps over -
he's working for me, I'm the publisher of the newspaper, Nick's a fine
lad, Sofia is a lucky girl.  Joe and Paulina smile through gritted teeth;
then Joe's beeper goes off, and as he goes to answer it, Jake slips into
his chair between Paulina and Aunt Frannie. Joe comes back with his coat
on and says he has to go to the station [see above], leaving with a
warning glare at Jake.

     Aunt Frannie is starting to soften up after a few glasses of chianti;
Jake starts to schmooze her about how beautiful she is (like-auntie,
like-niece), etc. Meanwhile, Mike has been watching this spectacle and
decides to pop over and see what gives, being suspicious of any
involvement Jake might have with Nick. Mike excuses himself from his
date, gets up and starts over to the Carlino table; Jake spots him and
heads off disaster by rising and having Mike join in a toast - to the
happy couple and their upcoming marriage! Mike is baffled, and he pulls
Nick and Sofia aside to get an explanation. Sofia goes to get more
chianti, and Jake sidles over to urge Mike to go easy on Nick, he's trying
to do a good thing, but Mike tells Jake to take a hike. Nick says he'll
explain at home later, but Mike says no, now. Back off, says Nick, I'm
helping out a friend. He goes back to the table, and Jake assures Mike
that Nick's job is legit, everything's on the up-and-up. Mike warns Jake
to stay away from Nick - Nick's been in trouble, he doesn't need Jake as a
role model.

Meanwhile, while everyone else has left the table, Frannie scoots
over next to Paulina. Where's the band, she asks hazily. She gets
Paulina to join her in humming Eddie's favorite aria from "La Traviata,"

to Paulina's confusion. Jake returns, and starts in again on Frannie:

anyone who has the heart to sing like that, wouldn't stand in the way of
true love - you've kept your promise and raised Sofia right, now it's time
for you to have some fun yourself - c'mon, baby, he winks, why not give
them your blessing, let me drive you to the airport, we'll pick you up
some amaretto bubble bath on the way so you can start living it up! Why
not? she announces suddenly - she even gives Paulina her blessing (name
the baby after me, and I'll change my will, she adds). As she has a final
word with Sofia and Nick, Paulina quietly congratulates Jake on his
impressive work. Jake notes that business seems to be slow, and suggests
that she stop by his paper and take out an ad. Why do you care? she asks
suspiciously. I care about everything you do, he answers, then he brings
Frannie her coat and they head out the door.

Sofia is ecstatic that they pulled it off. Now that we're officially
engaged, Nick suggests shyly, maybe we should go on a date?

GRANT'S NEW TRICK
Grant/Carl

Grant goes to Carl's (unattended) bedside, moves the nurse call
button out of Carl's reach, and injects him with the contents of a syringe
(Grant has looked up in his drug book and found a deadly substance that's
hard to detect if you're not looking for it). As Grant steals out, Carl
stirs and grasps for the call button.

Grant sneaks out of the hospital and buys a paper at a newsstand,
then conceals the syringe in the paper and stuffs it in a trash can.

Moments later, a city worker comes by and dumps the trash into a garbage
truck (lucky for Grant, who didn't even bother wearing gloves to handle
the syringe). Then he goes to meet Vicky for dinner [see below].

HOSPITAL INTRIGUE
Felicia/Rachel/Lorna/Sharlene/Gregory/John/Carl/Rita

Felicia comes to the hospital to meet Lorna for dinner. She runs
into Rachel, who has brought Carl in with pneumonia, and comforts her
distraught friend. Lorna rushes over to tell Rachel she's needed in
Carl's room. Rachel rushes off, and Lorna tells Felicia she'll be a
while; Felicia says she'll hang around to see about Rachel, and she goes
to a side area to wait.

Sharlene shows up at the hospital with Gregory, looking for John. A
nurse who knows them says nice to see you back now that John's back at
work; she volunteers to look after Greg while Sharlene tracks down John.

Felicia is coming around the corner, then ducks back out of sight when she
spots Sharlene at the front desk.

John and Rachel arrive at Carl's room, he's just had a seizure but
he's stabilized. Felicia follows a moment later, and John asks both of
them to wait outside. Rachel worries to Felicia that Carl's been obsessed
because Rachel can't yet remember the details of Ryan's shooting on the
trestle. Rachel wonders if her memory is blocked, not because of what the
memory would do to her, but because of what Carl would do if he knew the
truth. John comes out and says Carl is stable, but his seizure was a
mystery, he's ordered a battery of tests.

Rachel goes to be with Carl. As she sits by his side, he murmers her
name, but tosses restlessly in his bed. She tries to calm him down.

Felicia tells John she just saw Sharlene, how's it going? Rita
interrupts them, demanding to see John ASAP in her office about the latest
mysterious patient death "incident." As Rita stomps away, John remarks to
Felicia that Rita is on a power trip, he has to be careful not to make a
false move and give her ammunition. This time, it's Sharlene who comes
around the corner, and ducks back out of sight when she she spots John and
Felicia tete-a-tete. Lorna comes up and says she's ready to go, invites
John to join them for dinner. John [wisely] declines, he has to meet with
Rita and also keep tabs on Carl. They exit.

After seeing Rita, John returns to his office to find Sharlene
waiting. She says she was about to ask him to move back in, but she just
saw him talking with Felicia - it may have been innocent, but as long as
she feels so betrayed and keeps imagining the worst, she couldn't possibly
live with him. He suggests counseling, but she says she needs more time.

They discuss what they should tell Gregory, who is waiting to say
goodnight to his daddy. They bring him into the office with them and
explain how daddy won't be moving into their new place with them -
sometimes grown-ups who don't get along have to live apart until they can
learn to understand each other again. Will I ever see you again, Gregory
asks him. Of course, John reassures him, when I get a new place to live,
you can visit anytime, and you can always talk to me or your mother
anytime you have questions about what's going on or how you feel, we both
love you very much. Sharlene and Gregory leave, and John goes to his
doorway and watches them walk away.

HARBOR CLUB GETS SOME CUSTOMERS BACK
Vicky/Grant/Lorna/Felicia

Vicky shows up for dinner with Grant at the Harbor Club, but he's
busy poisoning Carl so he's not here yet. The maitre d' says Grant called
to say he'd be late; Vicky decides she's through waiting for Grant, she'll
go ahead and order for both of them. He shows up shortly; when she goes
to call home and check on Donna and the boys, she returns to find dinner
plates with lids have arrived at their places. The waiter removes the lid
of the plate in front of Vicky, and she sees not food but an envelope.

It's four first-class, round-trip tickts to Orlando, Disney cruise and
park passes, scheduled for 2 weeks from now. That's just when Ryan and I
had planned to go, notes Vicky; Steven was so upset when the plans
changed. She thanks Grant for the thought, but declines; I can't handle
the kids on my own, and neither Bridget nor Donna is really up for a trip
like that right now. But the vacation would be good for you all, says
Grant - hey, I got an idea - why don't *I* come with y'all [twist my
arm...]?! Thanks, but no thanks, says Vicky [through the red flags and
alarm bells]. Just think it over, he tells her.

Felicia and Lorna show up; Grant greets them warmly and directs
Andre' to seat them at Table 4. Felicia whispers to Lorna, if Grant's
being nice to us we should probably be worried. As they study their
menus, Lorna tells Felicia that John is now living in his office, good
news for you. Felicia is chagrined at being a homewrecker, she never
wanted that; but Lorna thinks, if he's left Sharlene, Felicia and John
should stop denying their feelings and go for it.

Grant reveals to Vicky that Spence has just given him the restaurant,
probably can't stand to see me out of work. You're full of surprises,
Vicky notes; but I still can't accept these tickets. Take your time, he
says, we have all the time in the world. That's what Ryan and I thought,
Vicky answers. She continues, but he doesn't hear her - "Ryan, again,"

he thinks, "I'm so sick of hearing about Ryan, he's gone and he's not
coming back, but I'm here and I'm not going anywhere!" [Oh, joy.]

POISON - THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
Rachel/Carl

As Rachel watches Carl sleeping fitfully, he suddenly has another
seizure. Rachel screams out the door for help, and John rushes in.

Rachel watches in mortal fear as John quickly examines Carl, calls a Code
Blue and starts pounding on his chest. FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
